AAbolitionist- a person who strongly favors doing away with slavery. Article- a part of a document,

such as the Constitution ,that deals with a single subject

Alien- an immigrant living in a country in which he or she is not a citizen

Boycott- to refuse to buy item from a particular country Burgesses- Elected representatives

to an assembly

Bond-a note issued by the government which promises to pay off a loan with interses

CCabinet- a group of advisers to the president. Capital- money for investment

Ceded- to give up by treaty

DDaft- the selection of persons for required military service. Drought- a long period of time with

little rainfall

Desert- to leave without permission

EEmancipate- to free from slavery

Embargo- an order prohibiting trade with another county.

Emigrant-a person who leaves a country or region

FFederal debt- the amount of money owned by the government. Furgitive- runaway or trying to

Judicial review- the right of the supreme court to determine if a law violates the constitution.

Joint Occupation- the possession and setting of an area shared by two or more countries

Turnpike- a road that one must pay to use, the money is used to pay sort the road

Tidewater- region of flat, low- lying plains along the seacoast
