FROM YOUR PRESIDENT DEANNA STEARNSPlant America: Give and Grow with GCO

The following message was presented by incoming GCO President Deanna Stearns upon her installation at the recent GCO Convention.

This is a humbling experience to stand before all of you. All of the countless Garden Club of Ohio volunteers and garden club members are the strong backbone of this non-profit organiza-tion. Our mission statement tells us that we “support endeavors in every aspect of gardening through educational programs, hor-ticulture and floriculture. We will show by means of example a responsible stewardship of our land”. Through common interest and goals, we can create memories which will endure through-out the years to come.

We continue to sponsor Flower Show School and Landscape Design School, as well as Environmental and Garden Study Schools. We encourage Ohio college students to apply for our scholarships. Our Scholarship Committee under the direction of Chairman Aggie Goss, takes this challenge seriously. We have a wonderful and hardworking Awards Committee. Cleo Lehman and Barbara Snyder are always available to help you with any question on how to apply for an award. As always, we continue to encourage our clubs to apply for awards to recognize all the hard work.

Your GCO Board for the 2017-19 term is excited and involved in their particular chair-manship. The new team will be offering life enriching experiences for current and future generations by providing opportunities for education and appreciation of nature.

There is much business to accomplish as we look forward to establishing the Garden Club of Ohio charitable foundation. The Budget & Finance Committee under the direction of Barbara Okleson is always available to answer financial questions and to watch over all of our funds.

My project for this term will be to feed Ohio. Poverty and hunger is high throughout the state and in every community. There are approximately 202 “Feeding America” Food Banks in the country along with other organizations. All of those Food Banks are desper-ately needed, but more needs to be done. Usually one in four children and one in seven adults are hungry. It is my understanding that in the local Canton area approximately 5,000 people are served each day. A recent USDA report found 16.9% of Ohioans now live in food insecure households ranking our state sixth nationally for the highest rate of food insecurity ranking behind Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Texas. Inci-dentally, 16.9% represents 1,852,870 individuals. Garden Club of Ohio and our member clubs can do something to help.

Pat Rupiper has agreed to become the “Feed Ohio” Chairman. I am asking our garden clubs to support this project. How about building a root cellar? How about your club filling food boxes around the third week of the month when the average $133 food al-lotment has been redeemed? And just a note, that is about the time food pantries are empty. I am sure your club would be able to fill backpacks for children to have food over

New GCO President Deanna Stearns

the weekends. How about teaching kids of all ages to plant a garden and harvest it? It has been brought to my attention that many individuals who use the food pantries do not know how to prepare fresh food. Maybe helping out with cooking would be a fun experience for you and those you help. I know many of you have ideas about how to help. Many clubs participate with Habitat for Humanity landscaping. Maybe planting a vegetable garden would be helpful.

This project does go hand in hand with our National President’s theme of “Plant Amer-ica”. So let’s do just that and help those in need here in Ohio. Let us plant, harvest and feed Ohio. We can be an example for the rest of the United States.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson tells us “to laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condi-tion; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded”. As active garden club members we can epitomize the ideals expressed by Emerson by leaving the world a more beautiful place for others to enjoy. We are provided a unique opportunity to set high standards for the coming years. May our actions bring peace and preserve our planet for those who come after us. Together we can proudly rec-ognize the value of our past accomplishments while shaping a bold new future.

Now on a personal note, several years ago I was the President of Canton Garden Center, in fact that year was 2000. That was the year I attended my first Garden Club of Ohio Con-vention right here in the Toledo district at this very same venue. Little did I know I would be in front of all of you 17 years later accepting the honor of President of this prestigious organization. Wow! I can say, “What is a girl like me doing in a place like this?” Garden club work is so rewarding. I joined to learn and experience new activities and that is just what happened. I have grown personally on several fronts. I encourage all of you and your friends to take up the torch (or rake and hoe) and grow like your garden can grow. We will have fun these next few years and we will learn and we will serve others.

Before I close, it is with the deepest gratitude that I say to all previous and existing volun-teers a heartfelt thank you. These are the members who have led our organization since it was founded 90 years ago. Through common interest and goals we can create memo-ries which will endure throughout all time.

As I said before, it is an honor to serve as your President. Please join me and the mem-bers who have taken the challenge to lead the various standing and special committees along with our School Chairman as we continue to dedicate our efforts to bring con-servation, horticulture, beautification, education and charitable works to each of our communities. It is my wish that all members will have the opportunity to both enjoy and participate in the wonderful programs, trips, and activities which have been planned in the coming two years.

Plant America: Give and Grow with GCO

Thank you all,

Deanna Stearns

The Andersons, Inc.

Seventy years ago, The Andersons, Inc. was established in Maumee, Ohio. From its first year in business, The Andersons, Inc. and the Anderson family have generously shared their time, talents and financial resources in support of worthwhile community endeavors.

The Andersons, Inc. is an agribusiness that strives to enhance the quality of life in communities where it has business operations. Through their collective action, they are able to greatly magnify the impact of their individual efforts to provide extraordi-nary service to customers, help each other improve and support local communities.

They support organizations that promote agriculture education, advancement of sound agricultural practices and keeping land and waterways clean. Many other organizations benefit from The Anderson’s generosity in the Arts, Health, Education, and Social areas.

A few examples of organizations supported by The Andersons are: 4-H Clubs, Local Garden Clubs, Agriculture Future of America, Black Swamp Conservancy, Metro Parks and Toledo Botanical Garden.

The Andersons’ spirit of giving back to our communities is as alive today as it was when the company was founded 70 years ago.

Toledo Botanical Garden• Is a center for horticulture and the arts • Is a unique and valuable community resource• Has 60 acres of display gardens and plant collections• Is home to an urban agriculture center that supports 125 community gardens• Is open daily to the public at no charge (excluding some special events)• Is visited by more than 120,000 people annually

Their work on protection of the environment is evident in their recent Crosby Lake restoration project. They are currently in the process of establishing a Children’s educational path through the garden.

The Garden Club Forum House is located at the entrance of the Garden and is home to local garden clubs, the Lucas County Extension Service and the local master gardener program, TOLEDO GROWS.

Garden Club of Ohio and the Toledo District recognize Toledo Botanical Garden for their continued support of horticulture, protec-tion of the environment and education of the public. The Toledo Botanical Garden as one of the great treasures of the Toledo area!

By Gail Chuck, 2016 Buckingham Award Winner

The Mildred Heter Buckingham Award was first given in 1952 in memory of Mrs. Buckingham who served as First Vice-President of Garden Club of Ohio. Since that time, each year at the GCO Board Meeting prior to the Annual Convention, Board Members vote for the person whom they consider has given Outstanding Service to Garden Club of Ohio.

Last year, when my name was given as the recipient of the Buckingham Award, I could not believe it. As Betty Cookendorfer read the nominating informa-tion, to my amazement, I realized that she was talking about me. This year, I had the pleasure of presenting the background of the well-deserving 2017 winner, Barbara Okleson.

Barbara has been a diligent and dedicated worker for GCO over many years. She was introduced to Ridgewood Garden Club by her Aunt Julie and has worked on many of its committees and also served as club president.

Barbara has a multitude of talents. Floral design ranks high on the list. She completed Flower Show School and now serves as a Master-level Judge. She rarely misses a Flower Show Sympo-sium, GCO Board Meeting or State Convention. In February, she also would head to Florida to attend Bob Thomas’ school for floral design. For numerous years, she has been the floral designer for her church, providing designs for all of the holidays as well as weekly mass. As a creative de-signer, Barbara became a member of Cleveland Flower Arrangers in 1987. She has served as the Ohio Judges Council President and also presided over the Central Atlantic Region Convention when it was in Ohio in 2012.

In addition to floral design, Barbara loves figures and finance. Both have been a huge part of her professional career as well as her responsibilities with GCO. She served as Budget and Finance Chairman and is wrapping up 10 years as GCO’s Executive Secretary.

Something you may not know about this year’s award winner? Barbara and her husband of more than 50 years, Ronnie, were fantastic Polish dancers! Ronnie was delighted to hear that Barbara has been recognized with this award. They have two wonderful sons, Joe and Johnny. Barbara also has two sisters, Pat Marquardt and Elaine Pasut, who live out of state, but we were fortunate to have Pat join us at the Banquet to celebrate Barbara’s achievement along with members of Ridgewood Garden Club and Cleveland Flower Arrangers.

Congratulations to such a deserving winner who has dedicated her life to family, friends, church and GCO activities.

GCO Scholarship Fund DonationsShirley Basista, Scholarship Contribution ChairmanCongratulations! We are right on track for another big year. Our GCO Garden Clubs are doing great—thank you very much. In the 6 months since the letter went out in October 2016 we have 42% of our clubs represented. There is still time for clubs to

send in an Annual Appeal donation for this very important educational project. With $6,785 depos-ited, we are well on our way to another record year and reaching our $15,000 goal. It is possible if every club will contribute something, we welcome every donation regardless of the size. A contribution to the Scholarship Fund is also a wonderful way to say ‘Thank You’ to a member who has given a program or contributed to the garden club in some way as an Honorarium. Giving a Memorial donation in memory of our garden club friends who pass away is another way to honor someone by helping another person fulfill their dream. Please keep all these possibilities in mind and remind your Garden Club when the occasion arises.I look forward to hearing from every GCO Garden Club in the next 6 months. Each Garden Club is important and we are all part of a TEAM and SPECIAL!

Ohio Land TrustAthena Thaler, Ohio Land Trust ChairmanWe have just completed the campaign year from April 1, 2016 to April 1, 2017 and the amount collected was $4,111. This is a big improvement in donations!

Reasons for the improvement? Maybe GCO clubs are including The Nature Conservancy of Ohio in their garden club’s annual budget. The promotion of receiving 6 Nature Con-servancy magazines and 2 Ohio Newsletters when donations are $50 or more is an added incentive to donate. To support efforts in conservation, initiatives to preserve Ohio’s land, air and water are very important for the future of our state. We are heading in the right direction! Ohio needs the support of all the clubs in GCO.Your support is greatly appreciated. Donations since our last issue are listed below. A big THANK YOU to all the GCO garden clubs and individuals who contributed. Now, we start another campaign year. Remember, any size donation is appreciated!Visit the GCO website under Civic Development for more information about the Nature Conservancy or to access the printable donation form.

DABBLING IN DESIGNJudy Monnot, Floral Design Chairman

The Rules & ToolsAll art forms recognize the part that the Elements and Principles of Design play in creating a work of art. They are basically the Rules {Principles} by which we plan and construct our floral designs and the Tools {Elements} which we use to build our designs. Architects start with a blueprint or the “rules” of their project to guide the construction team. The construction workers in turn use their “tools” - hammers, nails, shingles, etc. to actually complete the project.

In floral design we use our imagination and creativity to fashion a plan for a design. We then turn to the “rules” to guide us through the process of selecting the “tools” to execute our plan. So then, the rules are standards such as Balance, Dominance, Contrast, Rhythm, Proportion and Scale which are used to guide and evaluate our work.

I think the terms “Rules” and “Tools” are easier to understand for many designers. In order to be successful at playing a game, you must first comprehend the rules of play. It is difficult to embrace an idea and try to share it with others if you do not play by the rules. Be aware of the rules of design so you can use them to your benefit as you plan and work through your design.

On the other hand, the “tools” are the physical characteristics which contribute to a floral design: Line, Form, Color, Texture, Pattern, Size, Space and Light. A good carpenter understands the capability of each of his tools and strives to use the correct tool for each job. For example, an interesting branch of winged euonymus would be a wonderful line “tool” to begin your design. I have found in my own design work that the more time I spend assembling my “tools”, the less time it takes to construct my design. Discover the spirit of your plant materials and other components to more exactly communicate your ideas through your design. So get busy and “hammer” it out.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP PERMANENT FUND FOR SCHOLARSHIPSDarlene Kaczmarek, Life Membership Chairman

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Life Membership Scholarship Fund. Please consider honoring a fellow club member through the Life Membership Scholarship Program. You can recognize an individual for service to your club, make a memorial donation, or as an individual become a life member. Most important about the Life Membership Scholarship Fund, the principal is never touched and the interest is used to provide a scholarship to a college student with studies related to gardening.

Westerville Garden Club Celebrates 70th AnniversaryWesterville Garden Club, Columbus District, recently received a Proclamation from the city in recognition of the club’s 70th year. The first meeting was held in October 1947 with ten people present, and now there are over 70 members.

Special projects in honor of their anniversary include sponsoring a Small Standard Flower Show, printing a cookbook, raising funds for the GCO Seeds of Friendship program and installing a Blue Star Memorial Marker in Hanby Park.

Update on Seeds of Friendship: By April, the club had exceeded their $700 goal to reach $806.35. In addition, 16 pairs of garden gloves and 52 seed packets were donated. Each member was given a collection box in

the Fall of 2016 and in March, their first meeting of 2017, members had already turned in over $612.

The club will continue their ongoing projects as well: maintain the Kitchen Garden at the Historical Hanby House, hold an annual Plant Sale, sponsor the WesterFlora Garden Tour, observe National Gar-den Week, provide garden therapy at a local elderly care facility, work on local school garden projects and hold monthly Community Education Outreach programs.

Greater Columbus Council of Garden Clubs Celebrates Sixty YearsIn late March, sixty wonderful years of friend-ship, projects and memories were celebrated over High Tea by sixty Columbus District members at Worthington Hills Country Club. Members donned festive hats and gloves honor-ing the tradition of times past. As members mingled, a historical slide show compiled by Cor-responding Secretary Barbara Snyder highlighted 60 years of projects, flower shows, newspaper articles and pictures. Tables were elegantly adorned with flowered doilies and tussie-mussie style favors containing an organic tea bag and chocolate mint. The centerpieces were beautiful floral arrangements in a variety of tea pots created by Karen Ciula, Recording Secretary.

Debra Knapke, renowned gardener, author and teacher, presented the morning program, “Tea & Tranquility”. Attendees were treated to 3 different tea tastings followed by a high tea luncheon. GCO President Lynn Fronk presented the afternoon design program. Members selected a tea cup and saucer and cut flowers. Lynn guided the group in preparing a lovely design to take home.

During the Annual Business Meeting, President Barbara Hilyard noted how our lives and times had changed over the past 60 years and after searching for over a year, no volunteers had stepped forward to serve on the Council’s Executive Board. Therefore a “Motion to Dissolve” was presented and unani-mously passed. Any remaining funds in the treasury will go to the GCO Scholarship Fund.

The Council should be commended for always supporting the Columbus District Director. Over the years, the Council’s projects have included planting the gardens for Creative Living Organizations and Harrison House in Franklinton, helped save Stages pond in Circleville, hosted many flower and holiday shows, trips, tours, youth projects and classes about floral design.

The Cincinnati Zoo’s entire grounds are a beautiful wildlife garden! The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is the second oldest zoo in the United States. It opened its doors in 1875. The zoo’s original collection of animals was very small and was founded on 65 acres in the middle of the city. Even in those early years the zoo was very successful at

breeding and over the years the research conducted here has made the Cincinnati Zoo an international leader in protection and propagation of animals and plants around the world.

Every Spring, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden transforms into a magnificent explo-sion of color! The Zoo offers one of the largest tulip displays in the Midwest and when in full bloom what could be more beautiful than 100,000 tulip bulbs? Dubbed “Tulip Mania,” Zoo Blooms also features more than one million daffodils, hyacinths, shrubs, flowering trees and other spring bulbs that are exploding with color.

After more than 25 years of tracking plants, the hor-ticulturists know which plants grow and look best in our southern Ohio region. A list of plants that benefit the pollinators and also a Zoo-branded line of plants which gardeners find easy to grow are beautiful and pollinator-friendly plants which can be found in local garden centers. Throughout the year educational programs including gardening classes and a sustain-able landscape symposium are offered to the public. The Zoo staff horticulturists tackle a community project yearly to design and plant garden spaces in local neighborhoods. Last year they planted 25 trees to provide shade for the newly created playground.

Visiting the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens can be a family affair. Grandparents bring their grandchil-dren and reminisce about their own zoo experiences

in decades past so come visit Cin-cinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens this summer and bring your grand-children. There is so much to see and as a garden club member you will be amazed at all you will see and enjoy. Explore the Zoo’s website and I am certain you will want to visit!

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE... OR NOTJudy Lanning, Sustainability Chairman

Each year since 1993, March 22nd has been designated as ‘World Water Day’ by the United Nations General Assembly. The theme for this year is, “Why Waste Water?” It encourages all to reduce our use of water and to reuse water. As Americans we have rarely, if ever, not had enough clean water

to sustain us. We turn on a tap and out flows clean drinking, useable water. There are exceptions. The lead crisis in Flint, Michigan that is still creating problems for the citizens there and the recent drought in California come to mind. However, water is something almost all Americans take for granted, but not so for the rest of the world.Statistics show that 1.8 billion people drink water that is not clean. Dirty water is the cause of many illnesses throughout the world. In addition to healthier citizens, clean wa-ter would help in the elimination of poverty. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.3 requires us “by 2030 to improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminat-ing dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated waste water and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally”. This is a huge goal, but one that must be met.As gardeners, we know the value of water and how necessary it is in sustaining life, ours and that of the planet. We employ practices that reduce our waste of water such as rain barrels, watering plants and not the drive, utilizing gray water, and turning off the faucet while brushing our teeth. Here is another suggestion: If you use a liquid soap while wash-ing your hands, lather your hands before turning on the water. Approximately 1¾ cups of water goes down the drain while we are soaping our hands. Multiply that amount by the number of times you wash your hands each day by the number of “handwashers” in Ohio alone, and there would be a valuable amount of water saved. Admittedly, this is less than a scientific study, but it does help to remind us of the need to sustain clean water around the world and how blessed we are to have a ready source of that clean water.
