To Get A 4

0Find a different medium or event with the same beliefs as your project- song, movie, novel, art (I love this one!), historical event, news story, etc.

0Your task is to deconstruct the two different mediums to show how they are connected by the same perspective.

0Deconstruct: to take apart in great detail in order to reveal the individual parts

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspective0One perspective after the Civil War was the South’s.

They lost. But just because they lost, does not mean they liked it. Even after the war, racism still existed, and ex-slaves still were not considered equal Americans.

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspective0 In the movie Serenity, even after the war ended, the

losers kept their same attitudes. Even though in the movie they are not racist, they still kept their strong feelings about “the way things ought to be.”

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspective0One example of this in the South today is the Southern

flag- the “Stars and Bars” or “the Cross.” People today still fly this flag to show their pride in their history, even though others say they lost the war.

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspective0 In Serenity, captain Mal Reynolds still wears his

officer medals. They remind him of who he is and what he believes is important. As he says in the movie, “We may have lost the war. That doesn’t mean we were on the wrong side.”

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspectiveAnother aspect that comes across in both he movie and Southern views is the idea that “We were fighting for freedom.” The South believed they were fighting for states’ rights, as in the 10th Amendment. In Serenity, the rebels were fighting to be free of governmentinterference.

Page 9: A 14 th WAY OF LOOKING AT THE CIVIL WAR By Rob Marsh

The movie Serenity and the Southern perspectiveAnother perspective from the South is how poor the losers were. The South was destroyed by the Civil War. Sherman destroyed much food on his march to the sea. In Serenity, the losers were also poor blah blah blah blah blah…
