Four new-construction, Canadian-builtminesweepers of the Royal Canadian Navynow fly the French Tricolour, followingtheir presentation to the French Navy atHalifax on April 7 under the NATO MutualAid agreement. The names under whichthey sailed as units of the First CanadianMinsweeping Squadron will not be forgot­ten, however, as each ship's bell bears theoriginal Canadian name as well as the newone aHotted by the French.

The period immediately preceding thetransfer.brought Canadian crews into closecontact with their French successors asthey explained the operatiqn of unfamiliarequipment to the new ships' companies.

The presentation was. made by DefenceMinister Brooke Claxton and the four shipswere accepted by His Excellency HubertGuerin, French Ambassador to Canada.

Helicopter BringsPatients Ash_ore

Landing on a space on board- shipnot much bigger than her landing gear,an RCN helicopter on March 24 broughtthree men from the United States Mili­tary Sea Transportation Service Ship,General II. F. Hodges, ,65 miles off Hali­fax, to the RCN hbSpital at Stadaconafor medical treatment. Of the threemen, one was described as being in"critical condition".

The General Hodges was en route toCasablanca when the three men werestricken and the ship diverted to Hali­fax to land them. It was decided, how­ever, that it would be faster to fly themen off by helicopter and a Sikorsky,piloted by Lt.-Cdr. Jack H. Beeman, ofMontreal and Dartmouth, N.S., took off.Also on board were a doctor, SurgeonLieut. Robert E. Stewa1't, of Toronto'the navigator, CPO William Shorten',of Calgary and Dartmouth, and crew-

man AB Sydney Seymour, of Hamiltonand Dartmouth.

With barely room' for her whirlingblades, the helicopter' was set down onthe forward gun platform of the Gen­eral Hodges 50 minutes after take-offand 15 minutes later she was airbornecarrying the patients. Within 50 min­utes Lt.-Cdr. Beeman set his "whirly­bird" down on the parade ground, atStadacona, not five feet away from thewaiting ambulances. Ten minutes laterthe patients were being examined atthe RCN Hospital.

The total elapsed time of the mercyflight from take-off at Shearwater toarrival with the patients at Stadaconawas two hours and five minutes.

Far East ShipsIn AIS Exercises

The Canadian destroyers Cayuga(Cdr. W. P. Hayes) and Crusader (Lt.­Cdr. W. H. Willson) joined the U.S.aircraft carrier Rendova and sevenAmerican destroyers in a series oflarge-scale anti-submarine exercises inFar East waters.

Sweeping southward from Japan'sHonshu Island to Okinawa, the fast"hunter-killer" unit carried 'out a sus­tained five-day attack on "enemy" sub­marines operating in the area.,

The Canadian destroyers did well.The Crusader carried out nearly 40 at­tacks on the underseas craft, and theCayuga was a submariner's nightmare­she was credited with holding her sub'­marine contacts longer than any otherdestroyer in the unit.

The main "hunter-killer" operationfollowed three days of primary anti­submarine exercises off a United

Nations naval base in Japan, in whichthe crews of destroyers, submarinesand aircraft "worked up" to top fight­ing form.

During the main exercise, anti-sub...marine aircraft and helicopters fromthe Rendova teamed up with the des...troyers to search -out and attack theenemy subs that attempted to torpedothe carrier and nullify the unit's effec-tiveness. '

The Cayuga and Crusader formedpart of the destroyer screen protectingthe carrier, took their t\ll"ns operatingin v&rious positions on the screen andacted as plane guard for the carrierduring several of the Rendova's day andnight flying operations, They were alsomembers of numerous surface attackunits detached t~ Hdestroy" submarineslocated by the carrier's aircraft, and onseveral occasions commanded the at-tacking force, .

The destroyers 'and aircraft carriedout continuous day and night ~ttacks

on the submarines and, simulatingl·war­time conditions, all ships were dark... ·ened during night operations. Midwaythrough the exercises the destroyersfuelled from the carrier.

It was' the largest, but not the first,anti-submarine exercise for both theCayuga and Crusader since they begantheir current tours of duty in the FarEast. Between regular patrols toKorean waters, Canadian destroyershave been carr;ying out almost continu­ous exercises with other units of theUnited Nations fleet.

Gratitude for the assistance ren..dered by melnbers of the Canadanarmed forces during his flight aroundthe world was the subject of a letterwritten by Prime Minister Louis St.Laurent to Defence Minister BrookeClaxton.

His itinerary included visits to HMC,Dockyard, Esquimalt, the naval air fa-

Admiral Mainguy attended drill nightsat Malahat, the Victoria naval division,and Discovery, the Vancouver division.

.During his return trip to ottawa, hevisited Winnipeg where he presentedthree Sea Cadet corps with new coloursat a p~rade at Chi1Jpawa, the Winnipegnaval division. HMCS 'Huron returned home on St.Patrick's Day, after nearly eight monthsin Korean waters and 11 .months awayfrom Halifax, to be greeted by hundredsof relatives~ friends and well-wishers.

Rough seas dominated most of the re­turn trip, which was by way of theSuez Canal and Gibraltar, and delayedthe veteran destroyer by more than 12hours. Fron1 the Azores the ship bucked.gales almost continually.

"In fact," said the commanding of­ficer, CommanderT. C. Pullen, of Oak­ville, Ontario1 "the weather was ·sobad that one day when we' passed closeastern of the world's largest ship, RMSQueen E.lizabeth. we noticed that shewas taking green water aboard at times."

The Huron is under refit and duringthis time the officers and men haveproceeded on leave or are undergoingcourses.

. Reservists toAttend Jubilee

Captain R. 1. I-Iendy, RCN(R), com­manding officer of York, the Torontonaval division, will be senior RCN (R)representative at the Jubilee Review byHer Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of theRoyal Navy Volunteer Reserve in Lon­don on June 12.

The RCN (R) will be represented inthe parade by 29 melubers of the Re­serve under the command of Lieut.Frederick Wallis White, RCN (R), ofCarleton, the Ottawa n~val division.

The two Wren officers and thre'eWrens in the contingent will travel toand from the United Kingdom by RCAFtransport flights. The remaind'er willsail from Halifax in 'HMCS Micmac onMay 31, arriving at Portsmouth onJune 9.

The RNVR was 50 years old in June1953, but observance of the jubilee waspostponed for a·' year in order not tocOhflict with Coronation ceremonies.

Four';' Ships for NATO

Officiating at the ceremony for the transfer to France of four Canadian-built" new-constructionminesweepers at Halifax April 7, Defence Minister Brooke Claxton met captains of the four ships,both RCN retiring and French relieving. The speeches over, the ships' com­panies, Canadian and French, marchedto" the jetty and formed up abreast theirships. To the playing of an orchestratedarrangement of. "Sunset", the Navy'sevening hymn, the Canadian colourswere hauled down, and the strains of"La Marseillaise" marked the raising ofthe French colours.

With the French Tricolours hoisted,the massed band played "God Save theQueen" and "0 Canada", in a stirringfinal tribute to the ships. The guard,band, and the Canadian ships' compan­ies marched off, marking the end of theceremony.

As a final act on his part, Mr. Clax­ton boarded La Dunkerquoise, seniorship of the group, to visit Capitaine decorvette Pierre G. F. Top, Toulons,France, in charge of the French con­tingent. La Dunkerquoise, formerly theFundy, is named after the famous with­drawal of the British army from Dun­kirk.

However, the minesweepers will neverlose their Canadian identity entirely,since every time the man on the watchstrikes the ship's bell in one of them,he will strike the bell that carries theformer Canadian name on the reverseside.

In his address, Mr. Claxton said:Sunday, April 4, marked the fifth an­

niversary of the North Atlantic Treaty.In the fourteen NATO nations the daywas marked by suitable ceremonies andspeeches ...

Six years ago, in February, 1948, thatgallant and tragic country, Czechoslo­vakia, was the latest of a large numberof nations to be taken behind the IronCurtain by Communist aggression. Byone means or another Russia was stead­ily expanding Communist territory and

fact that the Minister had once servedin the army, he seemed to have a greatdeal of feeling for the Navy and a greatdeal of understanding of naval affairs.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Claxtonsaid that his experience in the army asa sergeant.:.major had given him enoughappreciation of the effort made by themen taking part to realize what awonderful turn-out they had made.It was, he said, the finest naval paradehe had seen "in this or any othercountry". As a gesture of thanks he re­quested that the men of the two naviesinvolved in the turn-over be given a"make-and-mend".

He went on to enlarge on the purposeof NATO, and to express gratitude tothe French nation for their part in thealliance. He also stressed Canada'sdetermination to make "the organizationa successful one. In closing, Mr. Clax­ton turned and, indicating the four shipsnestled against the jetty, presented themto Mr. Guerin.

Mr. Guerin made a short speech ofacceptance, in which he thanked theCanadian nation for its part in the pastin affairs affecting France, and acceptedthe ships on the part of the Governmentof France.

Brooke Claxton,presented four new-construction, Can­adian-b,-\ilt, 152-foot minesweepers toHis Excellency Hubert Guerin, FrenchAmbassador to Canada.

The presentation ceremony took placein HMC Dockyard at Hatifax on April 7with a guard, a massed band fromHMC Ships Stadacona and CornwaLLisand the retiring and relieving crews ofthe two navies parading before the re­viewing stand. Hundreds of spectatorscrowded into the area to watch thepresentation and listen to the stirringmusic of the 66-piece band.

Rear-Admiral R. E. S. Bidwell,FlagOfficer Atlantic Coast, addressed the as­sembly, from a specially built standfilled with civilian and military digni­taries, including His Honour the Hon­ourable Alistair Fraser, LieutenantGovernor of Nova Scotia. In his addressAdmiral Bidwell introduced Mr. Clax­ton, and remarked that, in spite of the

Western union was then formed asa bulwark of freedom for the West.

The idea of expanding this in a NorthAtlantic Alliance was first suggested in.September, 19407, in a speech at theAssembly of the United Nations in NewYork by our own Prime Minister, RightHonourable Louis 'St. Laurent.

The free democracies of the Westernworld saw that if they did not standtogether they might fall separately.They declared in the preamble of theNorth Atlantic Treaty:

"Tney are determined to safe­guard the freedom, common heri­tage and civilization of their peoples,founded on the principles of dem­ocracy, individual liberty, and therule of law; they seek to promotestability and weli-being in the NorthAtlantic area; they are resolved tounite their efforts for collective de­fence and for the preservation ofpeace and security."Those were the words that were

,spoken and written down five years,ago. Those,'words have been translatedinto action and today the North Atlan­tic Treaty Organization is a reality.

What each country does to build upits strength is not only a contributionto the collective strength of NATO, but,also contributes to its own defence."Canada has made notable contributionsto the strength of NATO and those con­tributions have been supported by vir­tually all Canadians, irrespective ofpolitical party, racial origin or geo-

. graphical location. We all recognizethat not only is this being done forthe defence of Canada but also it isbeing done for the preservation ofpeace itself.

The developrilent of new weapons ofgigantic destructive power makes it ourparamount taska~d' duty to ,do what­ever must be done to preserve peace.

That is the object of the North At­lantic Treaty Organization.

Building up the strength of NATOhas beyond question or doubt been oneof the factors that has purchased forus five years without a major war. Thepolicy has succeeded. In another field,the United Nations standing together inKorea stopped aggression there and pre­vented its spreading elsewhere. Inbuilding up the strength of the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization we haveprovided a deterrent to aggression. Thegreat expenditures that have had to beborne have been the price of ensuringpeace. A prudent man insures his home

It is the same with NATO and atth~ meeting of the North Atlantic Coun­cil at Paris in December, the fourteennations reaffirmed their determinationto proceed with the policy and the pro­gram to which they had set. their hands.

At Paris the Council"reaffirmed its conviction that peaceand security must be the paramountaim of the North Atlantic TreatyOrganization. It recognized that tlwincreasing strength and unity of theNorth Atlantic powers, which mustbe steadily reinforced, nad provedto be decisive factors in maintain­ing peace and preventing aggres­sion. Nevertheless, the threat tothe Western world remai11s andmember count1'ies must be ready toface a continuance of this threatover a long period. The Atlanticcommunity must therefore be pre­pared to keep in being over a periodof years forces and weapons whicnwill be a major factor in deterringaggression and in contributing tothe effective security of the NATOarea."

'Canada has taken a proper share inthe work of NATO and in contributingto its strength.

This participation has taken manyforms:

1. From the Prime Minister's firstsuggestion in September, 1947, untilthe present date, Canada has takenan active and constructive partin working ,Qut the, terms of theTreaty and 'in setting up the or­'ganization.

2. We have worked with others tobring about the, standardization ofprocedures, communications, charts,maps, weather reporting and wea­pons.

3. We have met every commitmentby making available the forces wehave agreed to provide at or be­fore the planned target date. Theseforces now include 36 ships of theRoyal Canadian Navy committed toNATO for the defence of our coastalwaters and the protection of con­voys across the North Atlantic; the.First Canadian Infantry Brigadeequipped, trained and ready in Ger­many and an Air Division of twelvesquadrons of Sabre fighters whichare I believe second to none in theair defences of Wes~ern Europe.

4. We have established a great planof air training which has providednine different North Atlantic coun­tries with a total of 2,700 trainedaircrew with another 900 under­going training today.

His Excellency Hubert Guerin, French Ambas­sador to Canada, expresses the thanks of theFrench people for Canada's NATO gift of fourminesweepers. (HS-30095)

5. We have also provided mutual aidin the last four years for a total

. of more than $850 million (includ­ing the cost of aircrew training).

The latest additional contributions ofMutual Aid is the reason for our meet­ing here today.

Some four years ago we decided todesign an entirely new type of mine­sweeper and when the designs .weresufficiently advanced, we placed ordersfor fourteen of these in various Cana­dian yards.

Six minesweepers have now beencompleted and four of these you seebefore you.

They are:HMCS Cnignecto, built by Marine In­

dustries Limited, Sorel, P.Q.;HMCS Cowichan, built by Davie Ship­

building and Repair Co., Lauzon, P.Q.;HMCS Fundy, built by Saint John

Drydock Co. Ltd., Saint John, N.B.;HMCS Thunder, built by Canadian

Vickers Ltd., Montreal, P.Q.We decided to make these available

as part of the Mutual Aid Program inorder to meet a shortage in other NATOcountries of this important type of craft.Following this decision six more mine­sweepers of an even newer design wereordered from Canadian shipyards:

Shipbuilding is an important and his­toric industry in the Province of- NovaScotia and in the City of Halifax. De­fence is one of the biggest operationscarried on in Nova Scotia. Throughoutits existence as a great maritime cityHalifax has been identified 'with the

The four Canadian minesweepers turned over to the French Navy under the NATO Mutual AidAgreement still bear their RCN names on the reverse side of their ships' bells. Herbert Lowe,machinist and engraver at the Naval Armament Depot, Dartmouth, inscribes the name La Dunker­quoise on the bell from HMCS Fundy. sea and with the armed forces. In theHalifax are'a today th.e total number ofservice personnel and civilians engageddirectly on defence matters totals over13,000, and with their wives and child­ren make up a total of about 30,000.

These minesweepers are of entirelynew design, with the major design andengineering effort being done in Can­ada. Since the end of the Second'World War the RCN has done an extra­6r-dinary job to design five new war­ships and many new types of smaller

. "Vessels, all of which are now underconstruction in Canadian shipyards. Ithas been a great credit to the RoyalCanadian Navy and to the shipbuildingindustry and supporting industries.

Altogether contracts have been placedfor the construction of 8,7 ships andauxiliary craft and for the completemodernization of forty-two other ships.That is a big program involving an ex­penditure of something like $300 million.

So far 18 new ships have been de­livered while the modernization of 24ships has now been completed. Withthe ships now in commission, togetherwith those in reserve and otherwiseavailable to the Royal Canadian Navyin the event of war, the Navy can nowmake ready for war service, within ashort time after mobilization, over 100ships, not including civilian-mannedauxiliary vessels.

We offered these four minesweepersto NATO and the Standing Group re­commended that they should be allo­cated to France.

For us it was a particularly happychoice. Canada has always had an es­pecially close relation with France asthe country of origin of those hardypioneers who crossed the seas 300 yearsago to push back the wilderness andbring their culture and civilization tothis new land and where first settle­ment in the new world was in thisprovince.

To do this the French had to begreat sailors and we think still ofJacques Cartier and Pierre LeMoyneD'Iberville.

I am particularly happy that partici­pating in this ceremony today is a dis-

tinguished representative of his greatcountry, His Excellency Hubert Guerin,who in addition to being a representa­tive of a friendly country is himselfa great friend of Canada and if I maysay so, someone whom I regard withgreat. affection and respect.

It happens that we have a personalinterest in one of these ships, HMCSChignecto, in that my wHe had thehonour of sponsoring this ship when shewas launched at Sorel, P.Q. in June1952.

There she used the time-honouredformula "I christen thee HMCS Chig­necto. God bless this ship and all whosail in her."

Little did she know that she wouldbe here today passing this ship on toa great friend.

Twenty-fi.ve cadets of the RoyalCanadian Navy and RCN (Reserve) willtake part in an annual amphibious as~ .sault exercise with midshipmen of, theUnited States Naval Academy on June19 at a U.S. naval amphibious trainingbase in Virginia.

The landing, near Camp Pendleton,"vill be made by 2,000 U'nited StatesMarines and 586 Midshipmen while14,000 men in 35 ships offshore providethe landing craft and furnish logisticaland gun-fire support.

The landing exercise, which termina­tes "Operation Tramid '54", is primarilyfor the benefit 'of 775 'midshipmen fromthe Naval Academy at Annapolis, Mary­land, and for the Canadian naval cadetswho will train with them. "Tramid" isthe military abbreviation for "trainingof midshipmen". About 500 cadets fromthe U.S. Military Academy at WestPoint will be among the observers.

The midshipmen and cadets will "hitthe beaches." with seasoned U.S.Marines, under the protection of aircraftsimulating ·the strafing 'and bombing orbeaches. Paratroopers will re-ipforcethem."

As Mr. St. Laurent arrived, his carescorted by a U.S. Army motorcyclecorps, he was met by Captain Charles,who introduced the Prime Minister toCdr. Hayes and Lt.-Cdr. Willson. Heinspected the· guard of honour, walkedpast the ships' companies and was con­du'cted to a flag-bedecked dais wherehe spoke briefly to the sailqrs in Englishand French.

The Prime Minister told the sailorsthat the Canadian Navy had achievedan enviable record of service in Ko­rean waters. He said that during' hisaround-the-world trip he had manytimes cause to be proud of Canada~ butat no time was he more proud; thanwhen he visited Canadian sailors, sol­diers and airmen. Following the 'PrimeMinister's address Captain Charles ledthe ships' companies in three cheers forMr. St. Laurent, who in turn led inthree cheers "for Canada".

The Prime Minister was then con­ducted to Captain Charles' cab~n onboard the Haida, where he signed the'guest book and' chatted informally withthe three commanding officers. Shortlyafterward, he was taken to the Haida'swardroom where he met the officersof the three ships, and signed the Cay...uga's and Crusader's guest books.

As he left the Haida he obliginglyposed for picture-taking sailors on thedeck, and paused to shake hands withmany of the men.

Before the ships sailed' later in theday, the commanding officers and offi­cers attended a luncheon in honour ofthe Prime Minister, sponsored by theCanada-Japan Society, at which Mr.St. Laurent 'was the guest speaker, andthe commanding officers and executiveofficers .were guests at a reception givenby the Prime MinIster at the CanadianEmbassy.

Both officers and men took advantageof the visit to see the sights in Tokyo.A favourite spot for the men was theMaple Leaf Club, operated by the Can­adian Red Cross. Parties were also or­ganized for the men at Ebisu Camp, andmany took advantage of the sightseeingtours available to them.

All agreed that the Tokyo visit wasboth a thrill-climaxed by the PrimeMinister's inspection-and a welcomerelief from patrols and exercises.

The Prime Minister'sto HMC Ships In

The destroyers Haida, Cayuga andCrusader highlighted their current toursof duty in the Far East by a four ..dayinformal visit to Tokyo early in March,during which time they welcomed thePrime Minister, then on a three-daystate visit to Japan.

The Haida, which had just completedher second Korean patrol in the YellowSea, rendezvoused in Tokyo Bay withthe Cayuga and Crusader, both freshfrom exercises with other units of theUN fleet, and all three entered Tokyoon the morning of Monday, March 8.

As the ships came alongside theirberths' at Shibaura Dock, they weregreeted by a U.S. Army· band andscores of spectators. Brigadier R. E.A. Morton, Commander Canadian Mili­tary Mission Far East, and Capt. M. N.Tufnell, RN, British Naval Attache,were the first on board the Haida towelcome the ships to Tokyo.. Shortly after their arrival, the com­

manding officers of the three ships,A/Captain John A. Charles (Cancom­desfe and CO of Haida) , Cdr. WilliamP. Hayes (Cayuga) and Lt.-Cdr. Wi!...liam H. On Tuesday afternoon the ships' com­panies were hosts to about 120 officersof the Japanese Coastal Safety Forceand the Maritime Safety Board. Thevisiting officers, many of whom wereformer members of the Imperial Jap­anese Navy, were conducted on a tourof all three shil?~'

The commanding offic,ers and officersof the ships were guests at a receptionin their honour by Brigadier Morton;were hosts at a reception for 120 diplo­matic and military officials, and wereguests at a reception and dance at Ebisu ..Camp, the Commonwealth 'leave centre. '

On Friday morning Prime MinisterSt. Laurent paid an hour-long visit tothe ships. All three -destroyers, freshlypainted and ship-shape, were dressedoverall for the occasion. A 60-manhonour guard,- composed ,of men fromall three ships and commanded by Lieut.

mous. Practically everyone realizes this,"and ,radar has become almost a house­hold word. However,. in the· first fineflush of enthusiasm the pendulumswung too far; those ¥(hohad once said,

\ necessary- to think. In the Services ittook only a few:unfortunate mistakes tobring home the falsity of such a conclu­sion, and· a great deal of effort has beenput into training people to understandthe, real capabilities and limitations of

The first is that a radio wavetravels at the speed of light, 162,000nautical miles a second. The second isthat if it hits something as it goestrundling out into space, some of itsenergy is reflected and will come backto the starting point, just as sound orlight will.

There is one natural limitation to use­ful range which man's ingenuity is un­likely to get round. Like light, radarbeams travel in straight lines (unlessyou bring the Theory of Relativity intoit). The Earth, on the other hand, hasbeen fairly conclusively proven to beroundish, shaped more like an orangethan anything. As a result the radarbeam only travels for a short distimcealong the surface of the earth, then goesshooting off into space (see diagram 3).So, as long as aircraft continue to flyfairly low or ships to remain on the sur­face of the sea, we will never extendthe range of surface radar very much.The answer seems to be to put the setinto an aircraft and fly it well up. Asyou 'can imagine, this is technically'difficult and incredibly expensive, butit has been done.

Let's go back to the business of beamwidth. We said that we cannot havethe beam too wide OJ; we lose range, andwe cann9t have the beam too narrowor' it will not .strike anything except byluck. So we settle on a compromis~width (remembering that beam widthmeans the width in the vertical as wellas the horizontal plane). At this stagewe run into the problem of bearing dis-'crimination's (see diagram' 4). This ismuch the same as one of the problemsof human sight. If two widely seplj,ra-"ted objects of the' same colour areslowly brought together there comes atime when the eye can no longer dis­tinguish them apart. in fact, they look'like one large solid object. If they arefar away, this may happen before ~hey

aCtually touch one another at all.Exactly this happens' in the case ofradar, and the distance apart of theobjects at which this occurs depends,directly on the beam width. If thebeam width of the set is, say, sixdegrees of arc, the~ any two objectswithin that beam and at same rangewill appear to be a single object.

At much of a range the actual ,meas-'ured distance between the two targetscould be quite considerable; at fifteenmiles, for instance, they could be as

Finally, we can increase the sensi­tivity of the receiver by careful design"so that it will pick up very weak signals,such as might be reflected by a distanttarget, hit· by a weak beam. This is apromising line because an increase ofsensitivity by this means does not im-:­pose limitations on power supplies;transmitters or aerials, nor does it makethe receiver a thing of iaptastic size.However, it does make a receiver highlycomplex, thus increasing material andmaintenance problems.

As a matter of fact, we need quite alot more. And the sort of things wewant are a good deal more difficult toget than were the original range andbearing. So difficult, some of them, thatin spite of the fact that radar has beenactively developed since 1937, we arenot nearly satisfied, Compromises havehad to be made. I shall try to explaina few of them.

Obviously, the first thing that wewant from a warning radar is maximumrange. However, this must be balancedagainst the necessity of being absolutelysure that an object will be detected at ,a useful range. In other words, possible .detection at a great range must beweighed against certain detection at alesser range. This problem arisesbecause of the nature of a radar beam,which obeys the same laws as light. Theintensity of the beam varies inverselyas the square of the distance from thetransmitter, so that if one object is twiceas far from the transmitter as .anotherit will only be struck by a quarter asmuch energy. This imposes a limit t'othe useful range, since to extend it muchwould require enormous masses of gen­erating equipment and so on, in orderto increase the power.

Then again, the range can be in­creased by making the beam narrower.As you will realize, it is difficult to con­fine a thing like a beam to narrowlimits, something like putting yourfinger over a tap and try'ing to clean theother end of the sink with the spray:The early radar sets, because of theiraerial design, had wide beams and sotheir range was limited. It has beenfound that, roughly speaking, if thebeam width is halved the range isdoubled, when the power and the fre­quency remain the same. This is fine,except .that the physical proportions ofaerials designed to do this become colos-

The last major difficulty we meet isin ensuring range accuracy. This isdifficult to obtain for two reasons. Thefirst lies in the fact that the pulse hasto be generated, built up and sent outthrough a mass of circuits and compon­ents, so that a time lag is built up whichdiffers for each set. The second, andlarger, lag occurs because it has beenfound extremely difficult to ensure that

. the display side of the set, which showsthe actual picture to the eye, com­mences to operate at exactly the sametime as the pulse leaves the aerial. Thecombined effect of these two errors is tomake the set show a range which is toosmall. It can be corrected for all prac­tical purposes by shifting the scale offwhich the range is read by an equalamount.

Sometimes is· is important that the setbe able to detect objects which are v~ryclose, as for instance in the case of aharbour defence set looking for midgetsubmarines to poke their noses up. Hereagain the pulse length is most important,because you naturally cannot expect thereceiver to pick up an echo while thetransmitter is swamping it with power.In fact, the set is arranged so that the

at a speed of 162,000 miles a second,which is equivalent to 324 yards in amillionth of a second. This length oftime, a millionth of a second, or musec,is the yardstick for radar work. Sup­pose, then, that our pulse of energy isbeing pushed out by the transmitter forone musec; it will occupy 324 yards ofspace, so that two targets which are thatdistance or less apart and on the samebearing will both be reflecting energyat the same time. You would think thatif that were the case they would both 'arrive back at the r,eceiver at the sametime, and so appear as one echo. That isnot quite so. In actual fact, the targetsneed only be half the pulse length apart,162 yards in this case, to be distinguish­able. This is, of course, because theenergy must travel back as far as itwent out, which means that the pulsepassing one target and striking another,say, 165 yards further on will havetravelled 330 yards farther' than thepulse reflected from the first target.Since this distance is greater than thepulse length, 324 yards, the two pulseswill return to the receiver and appearon the screen as separate echoes. Theonly way to reduce the discriminationdistance is to shorten the pulse lengthand this is done in sets such as are usedfor accurate navigation at sea, wherediscrimination is of great importance.But if the pulse length is shortened itmeans that not as much energy is re­flected from the individual target, and

,sort'of error is obviously not acceptablewhere great accuracy is' required, suchas in gunnery fire control systems, andin , such, ..cases a very narrow beamwidth is used and other principles areemployed as well.

The next difficulty we met is that ofobtaIning bearing accuracy. Taking ourhypothetical set again, a single targetwould appear on a display as an echo12 degrees wide. As that would meana target three miles long at 15 ·milesaway, which' is v,ery. unlikely, someerror has crept in .;(see diagram' 5). Onewould think that the solution would beto divide the echo and use the centre ofit as,the correct bearing. This is donein ·practice, but it is unfortunate thatyou 'cannot depend an one side of a

.radar beam being reflected as stronglyas the other. Since this is the case, thebearing can,. be, and often is, in errorto quite a great enough· extent to be tooiria.ccurate for gunnery purposes.

Having balanced the bearing businessas well as possible we are confrontedby the matter of range discrimination(see diagram 6). How close together

.can two targets on the' same bearing beand still be recognized as separateechoes? Well, it depends on the lengthof that pulse of energy which is thebasis of the whole idea of radar. As wehave said, electro-magnetic waves move

receiver does not operate while thetransmitter is pushing out the pulse.This being SO,' the ''trfi'nimum rangeobtainable is at least one pulse length,since the receiver is shut off for thatlength of time, In our example, then,the minimum range is at least 324 yards.In addition to this, however, it has beenfound that enough power leaks into thereceiver through various channels toswamp it while the transmitter is oper­ating. Like anything else, the receiverhas to clear its head and gather its witsabout it once the surge of power hasstopped, and this additional delay,known as receiver recovery time, maybe as much as half the pulse length. Infact, with a high-powered set having apulse length of one musec (324 yards)

I hope I have been able to show yousomething of the principles and difficul-·ties involved in planning a radar set,The principles are fairly simple, butthe technical work involved in produ­cing a good set is very great, Duringthe Second World War the British werefaced with the alternative of eitherdeveloping radar or pursuing researchon the atomic bomb; in all that greatindustrial country there was neither thescientific nor industrial capacity to doboth,

Known as the AN/SPS-12, it is anair search radar operating at ultra highfrequencies and capable of detectingaircraft at ranges in excess of 100 miles.Sets will be installed in certain newconstruction ships of the RCN.

On March 18, a demonstration of theSPS-12 was attended, by officers of the

RCN and representatives of the Depart­ment of Defence Production, Amongthose present were Commodore H. N:Lay, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff(Warfare), Commodore (L) W, H. G.Roger, Electrical Engineer-in-Chief, andCommodoreW. L. M. Brown, AssistantCliief of the Naval Staff (Air).

Connected to the operating AN/SPS­12 were three different types of planposition indicator (PPI) displayingrange and bearing data supplied bythe main set. These were the AN/SPA­4A, a lightweight unit designed to servechiefly as a high definition surface warn­ing display (manufacturer, RCA Vic­tor) ; the VK-5, standard RCN air warn­ing display (Canadian WestinghouseCompany) and the VK-3, an air warn­ing display (Canadian General ElectricCompany).

SIX NATIONSAID IN SALVAGE

It didn't look like a major salvage jobwhen a U.S. landing craft sank, bottomup, off the island of Paeng-yong-do onthe west coast of Korea, but before itwas completed ships and personnel ofsix nations were involved.

The operation was complicated lJYrough seas, cold weather and lack ofsalvage gear. The landing craft washauled ashore on the third day of thesalvage attempt. In the meantime, thefollowing had taken part:

A U.S. tug, which provided a diver;a Japanese-manned America~ LST,which carried men and equipment;' anAustralian frigate, which contributed awire to raise the craft; a South Koreangun-boat, which towed the wreck toshallow water; a U.S. Marine Corpsamphibious craft, which hauled thelanding craft ashore; the Canadian des­troyer Haida, which provided men andequipment for ship-to-shore communi­cations, and a British naval officer, whoconducted effective liaison between theassorted ships and personnel.

The de-activation of the squadron re­duced to one the number of squadronsat the Naval Air Facility. Remaining is880 Squadron Q~ ,Avenger ,aircraft,which spent April in' Bermuda on exer­cises. The squadron' 'was to return toSummerside early in May.

ONE OF THE most drama-packed. incidents of the Athabaskan's long

service in the Korean war theatre oc­curred after the shooting had stopped,and it built up the Canadian destroyer'scredit with the United States Navy andMarine Corps to the extent of 700pounds of ice cream.

The incident was the rescue of threeU.S. Marine Corps airmen last August.Eight months earlier the Athabaskanhad re~cued a jet pilot from the carrierPhilippine Sea after his plane hadcrashed near the destroyer. The ex­change rate was then set at a quantityof ice cream equal to the weight ofthe flyer-in that instance 185 pounds:The Athabaskan had to leave before.she could collect.

The triple rescue came while theAt/J,abaskan was serving as plane guardfor ,the USS Point Cruz. A Corsair air­craft of the famous United StatesMarine Corps Polka Dot Squadroncrashed on take-off and both the Atha­baskan and the carrier's helicopter spedto the scene. Cameras were busy click­ing on board the Athabaskan and inher sea boat which was lowered almostto the water as the "chopper" beganthe rescue attempt.

Marining a wide assortment of cam­eras were CPO Douglas Laurie, PORichard W. Dickson, PO George Tattonand PO Douglas Alderson. They laterpooled their private negatives to pro­duce the accompanying sequence ofphotographs.

The first picture shows the Corsairpilot being raised from the sea, afterthe crewman had gone down into thewater to put the injured pilot into thehoisting sling.

Discussion, as the term is understoodin the service, is the very antithesis qfnattering and is anything but a one-wayconversation.. Qu:ite simply it IS anexercise in the good 'manners of con-versation. ' .

The helicopter hits the water witha monumental crash and chunks of.debris fly through the air. As the ma­chine remains momentarily afloat, thehelicopter crew scrambles out and hur­ries to release the Corsair' pilot fromthe rescue ·harness. Seconds later the

Discussion is an exercise. in self-dis­. cipline. We learn to control the impulseto dictate to others, to refrain 'frommonopolizing the conversation.

The development of democracy andthe development of primary and second­ary education have gone hand-in-handin the last hundred years because werecognize that democracy without. aneducational system to train citizens tounderstand what democracy is all aboutis valueless.

The discussion hour is a school ofresponsibility. In Western society weadmit that we differ amongst ourselves.Irrespo~sible people can, and sometimesdo, exploit these differences. But in or­ganized discussion hours everything as­sumes its proper perspective and irre­sponsibility finds no place there.

Above all, for the services the discus~

sion hour is a school for developingleadership. The officer who leads his

His superiors coulddraw upon his vast fund of knowledgewithout embarrassment, sinceStripeywas a man of infinite tact and diplom­acy, with a way of telling people thingsin a manner that made them think theywere telling him. He knew he was in­valuable, but he never presumed uponthat knowledge, was never guilty of abreach of respect.

On the inessdeck, he performed bytradition many of. the duties which to­day fall to the Divisional Officer. Men

brought their' problems to him. Theysought his advice in their private affairs,arid laid bare their grievances to him.He was seldom at a loss. No matterwheth~r it was trouble with a girlfriendd'r 'a bad caSe of sea-sickness,Stripe:0 couid be consulted in confidenceand always came up with a wise andeffective solution. . "

He had an immense and infectiouspride in his mess and in his ship. Theywere ,never quite so good as his pre­vious;,mess and his previous ship, andhe had a sorrowful conviction that theNavy was going to the dogs. N.ever­theless he did his best to check the rot,and' he saw to it that his mess-trapssparkled just that vital little bit morethan .anybody else's; he shouted andthreatened and implored until his whal­er's'crew was the best in the fleet; andif his, gun was not first on the targetthere was the devil to pay. Ridiculewas his weapon, and such was the ex­tent of his prestige thabhis quiet ironiesand sarcasms could achieve more in theway of correction than a lifetime of"jankers".

He influenced also by example. Hiskit was immaculate and correct to thelast stitch. He knew re,gulations androutines like the palm ·of his hornyhand, and his' punctuality was some­times uncanny. No, matter what time,of day "fire stations" was piped, it some­how never caught Stripey in the shower:yet he showered more often than any­one else in the mess, and was swift inretribution upon those of unclean habits.He must have 'slept with one eye andone ear open, for he never missed any­thing that went on, and he was neverheard to plead the lame excuse that he"didn't hear the pipe".

Stripey's darning, dhobeying and sew­ing would put the modern housewifeto shame. He washed his whites in abucket with pusser's soap, and theycame out whiter than if they had beenbleached. He mended his own boots,he m~de rugs and model ships, he madeup his own and other people's periquetobacco (collecting a tot of rum fromeach "to flavour the tobacco") ,andsomehow still found time to tell inter­minable salty stories that were listenedto with wondering admiration.

And yet, with all these innate virtuesand acquired perfections, Stripey some­how never quite made the grade ofpromotion. His service certificate boreirrefutable testimony to the fact thathis c'onduct had been ever beyond re­proach, and his performance of his

duties was always eminently satisfac­tory. Such sins as he committed werenever discovered, or if discovered, wereexplained out of existence. His com­manding offlcers spoke highly of him,and he left the Service at last with aset of papers that would have gainedhim admittance at the Pearly. Gates.And yet ...

The truth was that Stripey had noambition. His way in the service wasone of fatalistic contentment, and hetrod it with good will and good humour,guiding the feet of others on the firstdifficult rungs of the climb to Ambi­tion's heights but never envying or de­siring to emulate their success. For.after all he enjoyed the respect andallegiance . (and not infrequently therum) of his messmates, without the ul­timate responsibility.

If Stripey survives at all today, itis in the pensioned seclusion of thechicken farm that was h~s conceptionof Paradise. One can only hope, withsomething of reverence in the wish, thatStripey's hens are laying well, and thatthe reality of poultry farming is asidyllic as the dream ...

But such is the perversity of human. nature that it is fairly safe to assumethat Stripey, as he gathers the eggs,pauses now and then to indulge in fer­vent dreams of the messdecks he willtread no more.-H.R.P.

ENTERTAINMENTCENTRE OPENED

AT NADENAn organization which' will co-ordi­

nate naval recreational facilities, bothservice and civilian-sponsored, with~n

the Pacific Command area has beenestablished with headquarters in HMCSNaden.

The purpose of the organization,which has been named the Naval En­tertainment Centre, is to act as a centralagency through which civilian groupsand individuals may direct offers ofentertainment or recreational facilities.to naval personnel; to co-ordinate andpromote recreational and entertainmentactivities within the service, and toinform naval personnel of availablefacili ties.

The plan is not new, but is a con­tinuation of past policy along more uni­form and standardized lines. It ishoped that the concentration within oneagency of the several groups formerlyconcerned with this phase of personnelwelfare will result in increasedeffici­ency in liaison between the Royal Cana­dian Navy. and local citizens.·

Evidence that the plan is workingwell may ·be found in the fact that dur­ing the Christmas and New Year holi­day period· 267 naval men accepted in­'vitations to be guests in the homes ofcitizens of Victoria and surroundingdistrict.

In addition to arranging for the ac­ceptance of the traditional hospitalityof the people of Greater Victoria, theCentre has arranged theatre parties,skii,ng trips, dancing and fencing classesand other forms of entertainment andrecreation. The Odeon Theatre has a

standing weekly invitation to out-pa­tients of the Naval Hospital at Naden,and the Totem Theatre;. producers oflegitimate stage shows, invited morethan 800 men to various productions ina period of two months. Local trans­portation and sightseeing companies areco-operating and arranging. low-faretrips to other cities and points of inter-est in the Pacific Northwest. '

The Centre publishes regularly abulletin which carries notices of forth­coming activities, suggestions for spend­ing leisure time, and other items.

PACIFIC COMMAND

HMCS Sioux

Since the turn of the year, the Siouxhas been kept busy working up hership's company. On January 12 sheleft Esquimalt, following a week of anti,.submarine exercises, to rendezvous withthe Ontario the following day and escorther on the first leg of her Australasiancruise, as far as Pearl Harbour. Thisproved to be quite a busy time, gettingthe ship tiddly for her stay in theHawaiian Islands, and at the same time

:carrying out evolutions with the Ontario.

On arrival in Pearl Harbour, bothships were greeted by hula dancers,complete with grass skirts and floweredleis, and then all hands settled down toenjoying the sunny tropical climate. TheHaidahad arrived the previous week onher way to Korean waters.. Everyonehad a most enjoyable stay in the is­lands, and having sped both the Ontarioand Haida <:in their separate ways, theSioux reluctilptly set course for whatwas then a coldand very wet Esquimalt.

The ship arrived in her home port inthe rain on Sunday morning, January31.

A ship's company dance, the firstsince the refit period, was held the Fri­day following return at the famousClub Sirocco in Victoria. With almosta hundred per cent attendance (dutywatch excepted) the dl,mce proved tobe a great success.

The following week was occupiedwith anti-submarine exercises in com­pany with HMCS Sault Ste. Marie andthe U.S. submarine Greenfish. The shipsailed on March 1 for Port Alberni.This began a cruise in summer-likeweather around one of. the most scenicplaces in Canada, Vancouver Island.

On leaving Port Alberni, the shipsteamed up the West Coast of the islandinto Nootka Sound for a brief lookaround (to the benefit of all camerafans on board) and then on to PortAlice. Here part of the ship's companywas taken on' a tour of the AlaskaPine and Cellulose plant in the after­noon, and that eveqing all who wishedto attend were entertained at a bridgeand euchre party by the townspeople.

Several valuable prizes were in evi­dence on sailing the following day forAlert Bay.

The people of Alert Bay proved everybit as hospitable as the previous hostshad been, and in honour -of the visit adance was held in the recreation centre.

From Alert Bay the ship moved toVancouver where· she spent the week­end, and those with homes in this west­coast metropolis made the most of it.HMCS Discovery opened the doors ofall messes to the ship, and many of thecity's high .spots were paid visits.

Leaving Vancouver astern, the Siouxthen entered Nanoose Bay, to carry outgunnery exercises and general drills fora week, on completion of which shereturned to Esquimalt on Friday,March 12.

Members of the radio station staff.and their wives trod the boards onFebruary 23 and 24 in the village ofMasset when they presented a varietyshow. A can-can number by the wives,under the direction of Ldg. Sea. WilliamJackson, was undouptedly the programitem meriting top billing.

Hitherto unrevealed talents as vocal­ists were disclosed by Mrs. W. E.Butchart and Mrs. L. C. Laurie. Atumbling act, vocal quartette and a pan­tomine were other items on the pro­gram.

Members of the Masset· branch of theCanadian Legion presented a highlyrealistic portrayal of "The Shooting ofDan McGrew".

HMCS ElkThe Elk, formerly ML 124, has main­

tained a fairly activ·e pace during thepast few months. Highlight of her ac­tivities during the past month' was acruise to the northern waters of B.C.and the coast inlets.

The little ship left Esquimalt onMarch 5 and made her first stop atComox. The next day the Elk departedfor Duncan Bay, on the southern shore

of Seymour Narrows. March 7 saw herat Port Hardy, on the northern tip ofVancouver Island, where warm sun­shine was enjoyed.

Crossing Queen Charlotte Sound tothe mainland, the ship stopped atKlemtu, an Indian village. Here thecrew received an invitation to partici­pate in a basketball game with the localinhabitants but had to decline when theship's company failed to yield sufficientbasketball players.

The next stop was at Kitimat, site ofthe huge aluminum plant, where theship continued to enjoy balmy weatherthat had followed her from Victoria.Two days were spent at Kitimat, duringwhich tours were arranged of thealuminum company's development.

Leaving Kitimat, the EUc sailed forKemano, where the power is generatedto supply the mills at Kitimat. TheElk's crewmen were greatly impressedwith the development at Kemano., Thepower plant itself is built inside amountain. The water fall which sup­plies energy to generate the power istwice as high as Niagara and the tun­nel through which the water flows tothe massive power plant is 11 mileslong.

Homebound, the ship stopped againat Klemtu then on to Port Hardy, meet­ing unsettled weather all the way, rain,snow, hail and sunshine. Sailing viaPlumper Bay and Seymour Narrows theship reached Comox, where she stayedovernight due to a heavy snow storm.The Elk departed for Esquimalt onMarch 16.

Dis'turbed by the unfamiliar sound of women'sand children's voices in a man's world and bythe added fact 1hat he had to get into histiddley uniform, Swampy, Mark II, neverthelessaccepted the hubbub of the Huron's homecom­ing from the Far East with a certain amountof savoir faire. He is shown being reassuredby PO Raymond Bromley, of Toronto, that thingsare not always 1hus in the new, strange landof Canada.

With a crew numbering 12 men,HMCS Elk enjoys the distinction ofbeing the only one of HMC ships com­manded by other than a commissionedofficer, Her captain is CPO SydneyDobing, a member of the quartermasterbranch.

Aldergrove Radio StationThe biggest thing that has happened

at Aldergrove Radio Station in a longtime has happened. If personnel (andtheir families) have a peculiar, stiff­necked look about them, it's because­they have all qualified as sidewalksuperintendents, Trade Group IV.

This results from the personal atten­tion they have given the erection of thestation's new recreation building, fromthe moment the sewer trenches weredug. They saw the foundations welland truly laid and then watched theseven laminated wooden arches raisedskyward, and braced and bolted intoposition. That's when the cricks in thenecks developed.

The arches arrived wrapped in paperstrips, which became scuffed in han­dling. Aldergrove now boasts more"Irish pendants" than any other ship orestablishment in the Royal CanadianNavy.

Work is being done on the station'ssoftball diamond, but delays occasionedby an unusually wet spring make itunlikely the diamond will be in usebefore late May.

Married quarters has noted with con­cern the numerous "new entry" listingsfor Albro Lake Radio Station in a re­cent issue of "The Crowsnest", Whilethis has caused temporary worry, it isregarded as by no means a permanentstate of affairs.

ATLANTIC COMMAND

Shannon Park'One Sunday morning early in Janu­

ary, following the service at the Inter­denominational Church, the residents ofthe Shannon Park married quartersbade a final farewell to a popular padre.

Chaplain (P) T. L. Jackson, who formore than two years had served thespiritual needs of this naval commu­nity, was to take up a new appointmentand his parishioners were gathered to­gether to present him with a souvenir ofhis stay at Shannon Park. as a token of affection from the mem­bers of the Sunday School class.

It was just before Easter, 1952, thatPadre Jackson came to Shannon Parkto see what could be done for the navalpersonnel and their families. He hadnot been officially appointed as Chaplainof the community, but what had beenintended originally as a visit turned intoa two-year tour of duty. In those twoyears he spent so much of his time andeffort for the good of everyone living inthe naval married quarters at bothShannon Park and Harbourview, thatthe residents took it for granted that 'Chaplain Jackson was their padre.

Help, advice and encouragement werereadily given, and the Padre was nevertoo busy to see anyone in need of as­sistance. Many who now reside in Shan­non Park are there solely through hisefforts. The Sunday School, which grewfrom a small gathering to a throng ofyoungsters approximately 300 strongduring this period, is but one church or­ganization that will miss Padre Jackson.

He has been succeeded at ShannonPark by Chaplain (P) A. G. Faraday.

it has been announced by CommodoreKenneth F. Adams, Commanding OfficerNaval Divisions.

York and Nonsuch in Edmonton willtrain writers' and storesmen for theSupply Branch while the other threeestablishments, Donnacona in Montreal,Discovery in Vancouver and Chippawain Winnipeg, will provide training forwriters, storesmen, cooks and stewards.

This new training program brings upto three the number of categories inwhich training is available at the To­ronto division.

VC 920, Toronto's own reserve navalair squadron, is on the lookout for youngmen to train as radio and radar oper­ators to man anti-submarine aircraft.

The reserve squadron believes thebiggest response will come from highschool students, as at least one full sum­mer will have to be devoted to flyingtraining. First chance will go to GradeXI students who will be able to startthis summer by taking at least twoweek's basic naval training. Flyingtraining will occupy the following sum­mer (1955) and wings will be awardedto those who pass the course prior totheir entering Grade XIII.

'The training syllabus will include in­struction on the operation and servic­ing of aircraft radio and radar sets,radio communications procedure andmorse code. The ground training willbe concentrated during the period be­tween September and May on a part­time basis at HMCS York and Downs­view Airport. The flying training willfollow this after school exam,S, at the

RCN's Air Station at Dartmouth, NovaScotia.

Those who win their "wings" will beable to stay in the Reserve and flywith VC 920 as regular members ofthe squadron the following year. Thesquadron is aiming for sufficient trainedpilots, observers and observer's matesto form complete aircrew teams to manGrumman Avenger anti-submarine air­craft. Training flights by squadron air­craft will take place during week-endsin the Toronto area. Flights to the EastCoast for exercises with the fleet areplanned for the future.

HMCS CabotOfficers and men of Cabot had im­

portant roles to play in Exercise TradeWind III, an exercise in naval, controlas it is put into effect over merchantshipping in wartime.

Officers participating were Lt.-Cdr.F. C. Anderson, Cabot's executive offi­cer, and Lieut. (SB) F. H. Bragg, ,Per­sonnel from Cabot' manned HC 268 forthe purposes of the exercise.

HMCS DonnaconaMore than 70 present and former

officers of the Montreal naval divisionattended a mess dinner on January 29in observance of the 30th anniversaryof the establishment of the RCNVR inMontreal.

The Montreal Half Company of theRoyal Canadian Naval Volunteer'Re­serve was established in 1923 and hadits first home in shabby quarters overa Chinese laundry-a far cry from thepresent quarters of HMCS Donnaconaon Drummond Street and a circum­stance that led the original quarters tobe dubbed in jest "HMCS Hong Kong".

The honoured guests at the mess din­ner included Commodore K. F. Adams,Commanding Officer Naval Divisions;Cdr. Guy St. A. Mongenais, command­ing officer, and former commandingofficers of th~ division. They wereCommodore Paul Earl, now NavalOfficer in Charge, Montreal; CaptainR. B. Warwick, Cdr. A. R. Webster,Cdr. D. J. A library, containing what is prob­ably the finest collection of militaryliterature in existence, a lecture theatrefor the discussion of professional sub­jects, a military museum and a qUl;lr­terly journal are the facilities offeredto members by the Royal United Ser­vice Institution, Whitehall, London,England.

A brochure has been received fromthe Institution drawing attention to thefact that membership is open, withoutformality, to all commissioned officersof the active and retired lists withinthe British Commonwealth. Naval, mili­tary and air force cadets are eligible onthe recommendation of their command­ing officers.

Officers, on payment of the annualsubscription of £ 1 lOs, are entitled tothe full benefits of membership, includ­ing the four quarterly journals and uSeof the lending library.

The Royal United Service Institutionwas founded in 1831 and was originallycalled "The Naval and Military Libraryand Museum"'. The Royal Charter ofIncorporation, granted in 1860, laiddown the purposes of the institutionas "the promotion and advancement ofnaval and military science and litera­ture".' The scope of the Institution hassince been broadened to include theRoyal Air Force.

The library contains books by all thebest known writers and specialists onevery aspect of Commonwealth defenceand the conduct· of war, ranging fromthe latest publications to many rareold editions long since ol!t of print.

A large proportion of these booksform a lending library from whichmembers can borrow four volumes ata time. The purpose "of this to makeavailable to officers works of value forthe study of their profession.

Themuseum has been called "a veritabletemple of irreplaceable treasures ­symbols of the services' greatest achieve­ments and traditions".

Another section of the museum dis­plays modern exhibits, including modelsof wars.hips, armoured fighting vehicles,aircraft and weapons. Here also isshown a series of dioramas, depictingfamous episodes of military history,beginning with the landing of JuliusCaesar in Britain and including epic

Sailing enthusiasts of HMCS Ontarioagain won the coveted Costello Shieldin a regatta with the Royal Suva YachtClub when the cruiser called there atthe end of March en route to Esqui­malt to close a three-month Australiancruise.

Canadian sailors first captured thetrophy when the Ontario visited theFijis early in 1951 in the early stagesof her first voyage to the Antipodes.

The shield, a highly polished tortoiseshell, is offered for competition eachtime one of HM Ships makes a peace­time visit to the capital of the islands.The Ontario has been the only visitingship to win. Particulars of each com­petition are inscribed on separate silvershields mounted on the shell and re­tained in the Suva clubhouse. The On­tario will get a replica for permanentpossession.

There is the record of the Jervis Bayand the day Captain E. S. Fogarty FE;!genwon the Victoria Cross. The story istold by Captain P. J. Davis who had' anawesome ringside seat aboard one of themerchant ships "in that floating city, theconvoy, under Captain Fegen's mayor­alty".The fight the Jervis Bay put upagainst a pocket battleship has beentold many times" but Captain Davispaints a glorioUs picture of her as hewatched her turn to engage. "I lookedaround for the Jervis Bay, and ... felta surge of pride when at last I pickedher out, steaming boldly ahead of theconvoy, her stern gripping deeper intothe water and ,smoke belching out ofher funnel. . She was heading desper­ately towards the raider to close therange of her smaller guns. At the sightof her steaming in to sure slaughterto save the rest of the convoy I felt,

OF THE HEROES of the SecondWorld War, the merchant seamen

were probably the least publicized. Yetthrough months of war they bravedmines, raiders, U-boats, wind and wavewith a quiet, dogged courage which be­came an inspiration to all men who godown to the, sea in ships. "Touchingthe Adventures . . ." tells us somethingof the life and exploits of these seamen,and the ships they served.

This book consists of 20 sketcheswritten by merchant seamen andblended into a whole by the editorialhand 6f J. Lennox Kerr. In simple

'but exciting narrative, these stories re­veal:'the fibre of the merchantmen. "WeWho Came Back" tells of a "dugout"seaman who, answering the call of na­tional duty after years of the beach,

, finds himself pacing a ship's bridge oncemore. This was not an easy thing todo, for as the author says:
