Conference Overview

Conference Objectives

Jagannath International Management School (JIMS), Kalkaji, New Delhi is organising an International Conference on “Rethinking

Human Resources in a VUCA World” on Friday, 8 February 2014 at the Lakshmipat Singhania Auditorium, PHD House,

New Delhi-110016.

In a rapidly changing VUCA world characterised by head winds of

globalisation, technology, legislation, talent management, workforce

diversity etc, HR Departments of organisations across the globe are

seeking to derive competitive advantage from a set of intangible assets

that are referred to as people excellence. People excellence which gets

aggregated as knowledge, skills, expertise and abilities manifests itself in

the way an organisation’s human resource gears itself to deliver superior

performance through sustained and differentiated value improvements to

business.

In the last decade or so the HR function has elicited contradictory views

with regard to its current and future roles and the value that it provides to

an organisation. A recent study by international consulting major, KPMG to

examine this aspect has revealed that the HR function today is not “well respected” at many organisations as there remains a “vast

gulf between its perceived importance and its perceived effectiveness”. Robert Bolton, KPMG, HR Transformation Centre of

Excellence averred that “HR functions have tried for the past 15 years to transform themselves into strategic players but have had

limited success because they focused on rolling out generic HR models and universal best practice rather than customized solutions

that support the value drivers of the business.”

The leaders of the HR function therefore need to pause, re-think and engage in serious introspection with regard to their future

direction. As the shifting challenges of globalisation and virtualisation combine with the new technological tools available to enable a

reshaping of the HR function, leaders will need to take a number of steps to improve the function’s contribution and image. They will

need to develop business insights, predict changes and make informed decisions at the operational and strategic levels. Verily in

order to resurrect they will need to successfully navigate their organisations through the turbulent uncharted waters of the VUCA

world and deliver people excellence.

The Conference is expected to achieve the following objectives.

• Promote a platform for national and international thought leaders and opinion makers to interact and share perspectives

on the entire spectrum of HR issues relating to the Conference theme.

• Provide an opportunity for HR industry leaders, academicians and research scholars to share their experiences and

research results with a view to devising new strategic roles and responsibilities for HR in a changing world environment

• Create awareness and understanding amongst HR practitioners of the metrics that define success in HR today and how

these are expected to change due to global challenges of workforce analytics, talent wars and technological progress.
