Intercollegiate Philosophy The annual Intercollegiate sporting competition aims to forge friendships and camaraderie between Saint Ignatius’ and Mercedes Colleges. Both schools are co-educational and provide a wide range of co-curricular activities for their students. Senior students compete for a total of 20 shields across the following activities: Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Netball, Hockey, Debating & Chess. While middle school students don’t compete for a shield, they do compete on the day, therefore involving all year levels within both Colleges. Students from both Colleges are expected to present and conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. They are to be ‘humble in victory and gracious in defeat.’ At the conclusion of a senior match, students, parents and coaches are asked to stay for an official presentation of the winners shield. A brief speech is expected from the winning captain, acknowledging the efforts and sportsmanship of both teams. The overall ‘Ignatius-Mercedes’ shield is presented at the conclusion of the day (after 1st XVIII Football).
Intercollegiate rules of competition
In general, selection should mirror the sport policy relevant to the respective school. However, when discrepancies appear (a level playing field is deemed to be desirable) the following should apply: 1. Usual team compositions should be fielded unless injury, illness or some other issue causes
player shortages. 2. The spirit of the day suggests that players should not be promoted on the day to provide an
artificial team standard. If there is a good player who has played Yr 8, 9 or 10 all year then they should continue to play for their respective Yr 8, 9 or 10 team.
3. Specifically where a school does not enter a regular Saturday Open A competition, the guideline for selection should revert to that school’s best possible team being fielded in order of playing merit. For example, their Open Knockout team.
4. Teams should not be “stacked” on the day. The spirit of the day suggests that the team playing is the same as that which has represented the school from week to week or in the KO competition. This preserves the opportunities afforded to players who have made a commitment to be involved in the same team during the Intercollegiate.
5. A player may play in more than one sport (e.g. AFL, soccer and basketball) but cannot play in two teams of the same sport (e.g. Open B and Open C basketball).
