2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 9
99 Ways to Have Fun On &Around LBI
1. Here’s an earful idea. Either buy or burn a CD of dolphin and whale sounds. A super source is a CD called The
Underwater World of Dolphins and Whales. Then seat yourself on the beach, look seaward and listen to the sounds going on beneath the water. Considering the astounding showing of both dolphins and whales here in recent years, it’s a certainty that such subaquatic sounds are a-play right off Island beaches. Note: The sounds of nearby marine mammals can actually be heard by the human ears by going underwater and listening carefully.
2. Sand castles are for everyone; sand sculpting is a tad more advanced. The Island’s sugar sands are ideal
for either. Make sure to get some photos of the fi nished product, replete with artists. Nothing last forever – and sand castles even more so.
3. Take in a freebie concert. Virtually every town on LBI offers county and municipal live-music programs,
including an occasional big-name attraction. Many are no-frills, so bring chairs, blankets, drinks (no booze, please) and a bit of insect repellent.
4. Do a real-time check on other beaches of the world. Some clever texting and you can hook up with folks who are
lying around on distant sands, especially in the similarly time-zoned Caribbean.
5. Get reading. It remains an ultimate fun thing. This year there are a number of new novels based on the
Jersey Shore. In the nonfi ction realm, there is always something utterly enlightening about historic reads that reference the very spot you’re visiting. See the Down The Shore Publishing line of locally based books.

6. The fi shing is better than ever. OK, so maybe it’s simply better than it has been in decades. Get angling on
headboats or charters. If surfcasting is your cup of fi shing tea, local tackle shops can fi ll you up with the gear.
7. CLASSIC: Rent a boat – no, not a rowboat. Become captain for a day, piloting the troops to crabbing, fi shing
and nature-watching locales in the bay. Just don’t get overly cocky about visiting unmarked waters. Channel markers are there for a good reason.
2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 11
8. Have a ‘yak attack. Renting a kayak is among the funnest ways to take in the bay. Even kids can
catch on to paddling almost immediately. Trick is to not get too far afi eld, so to speak – you have to paddle back at day’s end.
9. Attend events run by Alliance for a Living Ocean. It’s great fun and a way to support this famed
ocean-watch group. More info at www.livingocean.org.
10. For some serious fun, sign up for one of the many programs and classes run by
the Loveladies Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, www.lbifoundation.org.
11. ODD FUN: Name those boomers. While noting looming cumulonimbus cloud formations
over the mainland, align them to Doppler radar signals, as seen on laptop computer or even cell phone. It’s both a fun thing and a safety thing. The same thing can be done at night, by getting radar reads on those distant pulses of lightening.
12. Have a Hawaiian luau. Why have just a barbecue when, with some creative cooking
and preplanning, you can go Sandwich Isles? Admittedly, a whole roasted pig might be a tad much, though a number of New Jersey companies can supply them. More practical: Better butchers can get you cuts of pigs. Finding poi (an ethnic essential) can be tough – but a number of Internet sites carry this taro product (almost always eaten with loads of sugar). Lomi-lomi salmon is a breeze to make; recipes galore. Deep-green seaweed salad is now being carried at many fi sh markets and such. Fresh pineapple and mango lend themselves to salad chunking – or cooking over a BBQ. Mai tais – and related Shirley Temple “mocktail” drinks – are a snap. Finding little umbrellas or plastic fl ower leis is as close as Dollar Stores. Finally, Don Ho music rules – as does calling in friends and neighbors.
12 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI | 2011
13. Try some carving. Be it a bar of soap or a chunk of cedar, whittling away the hours has long been a
very coastal tradition. Check The SandPaper calendar for wood-carving courses.
14. Invite the crew over to take in a beyond-classic B-grade beach movie (on DVD). The likes of
Frankie and Annette in “Beach Blanket Bingo” jumps to mind, but beach horror fl icks – most notoriously “The Horror of Party Beach” – will have watchers rolling on the rugs. Take a break, then present an incomparable, near-sacred vintage surf movie, like the original “Endless Summer” or the 1971 quiet, classic “Morning of the Earth.” They’re totally righteous.
15. Go in-seine. A number of LBI organizations offer lectured seine trips to the bay. There’s no
better way to learn the true names of those
whatchamacallit bayside creatures. You can also do it yourself. Shops carry small seine nets, but you have to supply the poles. Remember not to pull the seine up onto the beach, out of water; traumatized bay life dies very quickly. Keep net and its captures in shallow water. It’s all catch-learn-release.
16. Kids thing: Do a read-about. Gather a teasel of kids. Pick a classic fun book, read some and
pass around the book, with everyone reading a section.
17. Do not miss the bayside garvey races! You ve been meaning to watch those nonstop, exciting boat
races. Check events calendars for where those traveling races are being held. For further details, check www.jerseyoutlaws.com and http://www.ecbrcnj.com.

18. Go crazy on a tattered – or new – T-shirt. Make it into a summer fashion statement. Paint it,
needlework it, rhinestone it, button-ize it, even shred and cut it. This is actually a tradition for some Island folks, who have annually summarized T-shirts dating back many years, saving each one for future wall hangings.
19. Standup paddleboard the bay. This newish water activity has become huge this year. Much
like a giant surfboard, a standup paddleboard requires a bit of balance and a tad of paddling but can be mastered in very short order. When paddleboarding the bay wearing polarized sunglasses, you get an astounding view of the bay bottom, especially around sedge islands.
20. Do some lie-down paddling. Large, easily propelled paddleboards offer a super
aerobic workout for upper back, biceps, triceps and neck muscles. They paddle just like a surfboard. Just stay out of boating lanes.
21. Eat fi sh of a different color. BBQ something utterly fi shy. Better fi sheries always have some
“alternative” species to taste test. Throw a couple/few on the barbie.
22. Record it all. Mount a small camcorder or a talented cell/smartphone on your person,
turn it on and walk or bike (running is out) a favorite vacation zone. A slow beach walk on a packed day is an epic “record” for all time. During the winter, you’ll get all warm and fuzzy inside as you watch days of recent past. Needless to say, decades in the future those
recordings might be the greatest record of the Island’s living past.
23. Summerade-2011: Back by popular demand. Create the next LBI summer beverage.
Combine juices, energy drinks, off-brand sodas, even powdered drink mixes. Conjure up a taste worthy of becoming an annual hot-time tradition.
24. Get into geocaching. With handheld GPS (Global Positioning) equipment way
down in price, it’s cheap and easy to become part of the newest thing in hunting. Check one of the many online organizations for the how-to. Then, get together with other cachers and seek some pre-planted coastal caches. See http://www.geocaching.com for some ongoing LBI searches.

25. Eavesdrop. Not in an evil way, mind you. Simply pick a beach spot in the midst of the beach
pack. Lie down as if inattentively sleeping. Home in on the nonstop channels of chat coming in. Try not to give yourself away by laughing out loud at some of the prattle.
After-hours, pick up on conversations and comments that travel from barstools. E-mail your overheard snippets to Section Two – we call them “earshots.” Don’t worry, it’s not really like spying. If they cared about their privacy, they wouldn’t talk so loud.

20 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI | 2011
26. Accidentally-on-purpose drop some art. And, no, this isn’t littering. Make something cool
and crafty, maybe even sign it. Then, just leave it on the sand – or, better yet, on a jetty rock. Lucky beachcombers will have their day made. If you think someone might worry the art was lost or stolen, leave a little “Free!” sign with the creation.
27. Chalk it up. Street chalking is bigger, more colorful and more removable than ever. For kids,
it’s safest on sidewalks and driveways. If a side road is the best canvas, make sure adult supervision is at hand. As is often the case, adults have taken the kids’ lead and have taken to chalking one up on their own.
Once seen in Ship Bottom: A group of kids brought down a huge cooler fi lled with ice, water and soft drinks. They put out a big sign that said “Free Drinks. Help Yourself.” Surrounding folks were at fi rst reluctant, but as the scalding hot day wore on, grateful drink grabbers came from all angles. The givers must have made 20 new friends.
28. Walk the Barnegat Light rock jetty to the far end. Using binocs, ID various shorebirds
along the way. Step carefully.
29. Go bird’s-eye. Elevate to the top of the Fantasy Island Ferris wheel, the walkabout at the top
of the Barnegat Lighthouse and (not for the faint of heart) the top of the Causeway Bridge.
30. Sit through the coolest of sunsets. Take in one of LBI’s classic sunsets in the drink. Hit
one of the many bayside bathing beaches late in the day. Plop down in the shallows – late-day water temps there are often well into the 80s – and watch the sun sulk away. Feels and looks great.
31. Walk the bay shallows a night – with a powerful, rechargeable, handheld spotlight. Wear foot covering.
Check along pilings for bright-eyes grass shrimp and other clingers. Look at various levels of the water column for odd and alien-y worms, some of which break into circle dances when hit with the spotlight beam. Right near the surface, look for bluish sticks with eyes: needlefi sh. Touch a couple. Those little, leopardy fi sh on the very bottom are baby kingfi sh.

32. Do a late-night (3 a.m.-ish) breakfast at a popular all-night Island restaurant. Enjoy the
spectacle of night rabble-rousers and partiers. Don’t expect overly fast service; simply savor the people scene instead.
33. Crab or sand crab races. Actually, this once was a fairly popular beach thing.
Competitors dig up the largest possible sand crabs. On “Go!” the top racing prospects are loosed on a stretch of hard sand, near the water, where, ideally, the crabs take off running toward a fi nish line. Discreetly helping reluctant, wayward or stalled crabs along toward the fi nish line is allowed. Winner gets an immense cash prize – or not.
34. Eelgrass wigs. Too weird for some beachgoers, this fun thing has actually been done, in
a very impromptu way, for many years. Simply grab wads of washed-up eelgrass – green or brown phase – and pile atop head. Groom into a wild wig. There’s something oddly entertaining about this look. Photographs are a must. One Ship Bottom family used its eelgrass wig summer photo to adorn that year’s Christmas card.

35. Organize a cleanup of the beach or anywhere on LBI. While all municipalities do an
astounding job of keeping things clean and inviting, trash still falls through the cracks here and there. Doing a cleanup – and proper
disposal – offers a satisfying sense of further bonding with the Island.
36. For the long-haired ladies, get a cool-down haircut and donate the clippings to places like
Locks of Love.

37. For a kid’s birthday or simply a family get-together, plant fun things on a marked-off portion
of beach, then loose the lads and lassies to fi nger through the sands for the treasures. It’s best not to put actual goodies within the sand grains. Instead, hide painted shells or stones, which are then cashed in for treasure back home.
38. It’s not your granny’s needlecraft. It’s once again cool to knit and stitch in public.
Grab your needles and fi nd your own purls on the beach. Odds are good that folks of a similar ilk will stop to share yarns.
39. Join a parents’ group. Looking to bond with other parents this summer? Locally two
new groups have formed for moms who want to meet other moms and fi nd new, different activities for their kids. The Shore Parents and Play Group was created this winter by Jen Begonia of Barnegat Light, and the Southern Ocean County chapter of Mothers and More was created this spring by Natalie Peterka of Manahawkin. Search Facebook for Shore Parents & Play Group on FB and Southern Ocean Mothers & More.

40. Go cosmic with a Japanese feng shui Zen sand garden. Pick a
small portion of beach as your canvas. You can highlight it with a driftwood frame. Then, employ any type of small sand-combing devices to cosmically groom — and re-groom — the Island’s already-ideal sand. Make swirls and vortexes and poetic intersections. Regular combs work well. To get really immersed, buy a set of tiny tools meant specifi cally for Zen sand grooming. Eventually, add beach symbols — driftwood, shells, Jersey diamonds — to the perfectly worked sand. according to Asian afi cionados of sand gardening, this calm and casual fun thing can lead to a Zen-ish peace.
41. Do some people watching. The Island offers plenty of prime spots
for reaffi rming the maxim “different strokes for different folks.”
42. Support local original art. Visiting art galleries not only offers an
aesthetic look at costal creativity but also perpetuates same. A Manahawkin-based grass-roots group, “the intersection,” comprises multi-disciplined artists with a shared objective of creating “collaborative art experiences.” Learn more at the group’s Facebook page, the intersection (all lower-case).
43. Deck out the outdoor shower; infuse it with personality. Let it refl ect
your decorating style – perhaps a side of you unseen elsewhere in your interior decor. Be it serene and sunlit like a tropical oasis, utilitarian in its simplicity, or enchanted with kitschy doodads and eccentric thingamabobs, make it your own. It’s OK to be a little daring – after all, isn’t there something just a little primal about showering outside anyway, knowing just some fl imsy wood or fi berglass separates your naked bod from the rest of the beach community at large?
44. Take the ice cream challenge. Get a group of friends in on the fun of a tour of the Island’s ice cream
stands, patronizing and documenting every one in a single weekend. Make it a quest for the most unusual or memorable fl avor. What’s a vacation for, if not overindulgence? Not advisable for the lactose intolerant.

45. Go incommunicado. Get “offl ine” in the fi gurative and literal sense. Take a break from
the yapping, texting and social networking for a few days and just be actively present in your surroundings, with the people who share your physical space – you may want to notify friends and loved ones fi rst, so they don’t worry if they can’t reach you.
46. Ludicrous food challenges. Adam Richmond (from “Man vs. Food”) actually ate the
chicken wings to a point only one down from “Ludicrous.” Are you that good at gigantic gulping sessions? A number of Southern Ocean County eateries have developed food eating “challenges,” most in the name of good causes – not to mention good taste.
47. Play the weird-buy game. Go to an antique, collectibles or out-there gift shop and compete with
friends to see who can fi nd the oddest item of all. Lesser fi nds have ended up on the Antiques Roadshow.
48. Have a photo scavenger hunt. Make teams. Each team heads out and fi nd various
“little known” or hard-to-identify places on the Island. Take a few digital shots of chosen “stumper” locales. Later, teams compete to ID the sites, beginning with one shot, then adding other shots. The fi nal shot should be a total give-away (no points for that). The more signifi cant (historically or publicly) the secret sites, the cooler the reveals.

49. Always a rolling classic: Hunt for sea glass. This supremely fun thing has actually become
something of a daily race for the low-tide goodies left by receding tides. There are legions of glassers who hit the beaches. Cobalt pieces are worth a high-fi ve while red glass pieces are akin to a lottery win.
50. Go to paint a pot or take a ceramics/pottery class.
51. Take a drive to the Bridge to Nowhere Road,
Old Stafford Avenue, off Hilliard Boulevard in Manahawkin. Make sure your shock absorbers are in good working order. It’s gorgeous out there – and offers an oddly foreign angle on the Causeway bridges. Don’t plan on staying overly long if the bugs are out or hard winds are blowing, holding insects at bay.
52. Make word art collages worthy of hanging on your wall. Get a picture frame that can
fi t multiple 4-by-6 prints, then go and take pictures of individual letters you can fi nd on the Island (street signs, business signs, draw letters in the sand, etc.) and spell the word you want. This fun thing has caught on in college
circles — though not in the best of terms. Instead of simply taking photos of letters and numbers, kids are absconding with the real things. I even heard that a collegian tried to steal one of the letters from a huge casino sign. Let’s not go there.
53. Go parasailing or kite boarding. Not quite a classic just yet, this is an annual hyper-fun
opportunity.

54. Eye-ways to the stars. The beach is perfect for stargazing. Go to the
library and take out a constellation book and see how many you can later fi nd. Better yet, use a Smartphone app to chart the sky overhead – in real time. There are also kaleidoscope-type tubes that allow you to look skyward, then align the stars inside the contraption with the stars up above. Total accuracy when ID’ing constellations. Want to go far less electronic? Gaze above and draw up your own constellations. Yet to be named: “The Surfer,” The Blowfi sh,” “The Blob,” “The Mona Lisa.”
55. Draw your own lighthouse. Hey, everyone else on
the planet has photographed, sketched or painted Old Barney. Give it go. There is, in fact, something in the beacon that brings out the artisan in everyone. Let the creative juices fl ow!

56. Create a scrapbook or time capsule of summer memories. Collect bits
of memorabilia from your time on LBI – bottle caps, wine corks/labels, beach
tags, sea shells, cocktail napkins, guitar picks, party decorations,
matchbooks, photos, scraps of fabric from timeworn swimsuits and towels. Find a unique way to keep/display
them – in a clear vase with a handful of sand from
“your” beach, perhaps. Upload a picture of
your creation to The SandPaper’s
Facebook page.
57. Get gamy. Declare
a Skee-Ball tournament, or some other arcade game. Or mini-golf. Carry the challenge on at all the various amusement centers.
58. Go haiku as you appreciate the nature of the
coast. No need to write a novel, just jot down poetic blips in three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Each line must be its own entity. It’s haiku, English-version. These poems are short, sweet and always natural – an intense form of word discipline. Check on-line for other haiku guidelines – and its fascinating history.
2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 37
59. Reader suggestion: Develop an instant extended family. With digital camera and
a friend or two in tow, walk the beach asking total strangers to stand in for a “family” portrait — some folks won’t bite, but most happily will. It’s an off-season blast to go call up summer shots and look at dozens of pictures of nameless people, who are nonetheless stand-in family members. “Almost everyone we take pictures with asks us to send them a copy,” says the developer of this fun thing. “I’ve never met so many people who become friends.”
60. Blog poetic: Let the world in on the daily details of your life and times at the
shore, including any late-night escapades. Sure, Facebook and tweets are great, but those longer offerings are the stuff of blog-mania.
61. An old standby: Settle into a beach chair, grab those seldom-used, top-quality binoculars and
scan the open ocean, then the shoreline – and fi nally the beachfront. What a wild, fun and freaky place the summer beaches can be, especially when seen ultra close up. A hyper-fun watch is people in the waves when a large swell is breaking.
62. Take in another denomination. One Sunday, stop in and do a service at one of the many
places of worship hereabouts. You absolutely don’t have to feel shy. Every church and synagogue in the area is accustomed – and utterly receptive – to seasonal visitors. It’s a great way to meet the friendliest of folks.
63. Really make clam chowder. LBI and vicinity have become famous for their chowder.
No better place to give a homemade pot or two a go, starting from scratch – with locally harvested “chowder” clams, opened by hand and minced thickly. Use one of hundreds of on-line recipes. Need a lead? Stefano’s has its award-winning recipe on line. Tip: Shuck or steam open a few dozen (or more) smaller clams. When the simmered chowder is done, pour the small ones in to totally top off the clamminess.
64. Do a bagel and cream cheese sunrise. It’s simple and delicious and truly one of
the tastes of the shoreline. Strawberry cream cheese has that sunrise look to it.
65. Sleep on deck, be it home or boat. The skies all but jump out. The smells of the sea take over
by early morning.
38 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI | 2011
66. Make tea the old-fashioned, sun-brewed way. Ultimate results come from fresh
summer herbs. Any glass container can work, though larger jars with tiny spigots, made specifi cally for sun-brewing tea, are ideal – and cheap. The roof on an outside shower stall is a very common brewing place.
67. Invite the block to a BBQ. Make sure there’s plenty of food to go on the barbie since
response to an open BBQ is often sky-high. It’s fully allowable to suggest that attendees bring along some goodies they’d like to barbecue.
68. Classic: Late-day sports on the beach – after 5. Volleyball, touch football,
baseball/softball catch, Frisbee, horseshoes and related spin-offs, hopscotch (yep, it’s making a comeback in a crazy beach way), skimboarding, lacrosse tosses, bocce ball – and on and on. Oddly, this epic fun thing has faded a bit, as folks now end their beach days by rushing home to check computers and such. There’s no better time to let loose than the cool of the late afternoon.

69. Do all of LBI – by foot. It doesn’t have to be all at once. Casually walk a measured section one day, then,
the following day (or whenever) drive to the end point and go farther along. It offers the best insight into the Island as a whole.
70. Christmas shop. Sounds unseasonablem but it’s cool – on a blistering hot day – to take in the Island’s diversifi ed shops to get that Christmas
shopping done early. Plus, the gifts have an Island warmth to them.
71. Help out a local charity. There are plenty of opportunities at churches.

72. Try some alternative biking. From unicycles to surrey bikes, the back roads invite
summer pedaling fun.
73. Paddle under the Big Bridge. It’s pretty odd under there, but you get a perfect look at
the awesome architectural artistry that went into the span.
74. Learn the nautical past of the area by visiting the Museum of New Jersey Maritime
History on Dock Road in Beach Haven. Make sure to schedule enough time to really peruse the artifacts, especially the vintage photographs.
75. It’s a new look at the old. The Long Beach Island Historical Museum, 129 Engleside
Ave., Beach Haven, has been redone for Summer 2011 – and awaits stoppers-by.
76. It’s still glowing out there. Nighttime beach walks on the wet ocean sands offer a
bioluminescent light show, albeit subtle. Drag your feet and check out the glow.
77. This summer is once again loaded with free-to-all lifeguard races, including
state-level invitationals. Check activities calendars for exact dates and locales. Binoculars really bring the fi erce competitors into focus. Make sure to buy an event T-shirt or two.

78. Go golf. Miniature is always maximal fun and remains an indisputable summer classic.
However, we have some great links for serious golfers. Check out Ocean Acres Country Club (Manahawkin), the Ocean County Golf Course at Atlantis (Tuckerton) and the Sea Oaks Golf Club (Little Egg Harbor).
79. Beading is bigger than ever. It craft. It’s art. First and foremost, it’s fun. We
have specialty shops geared to the teeth for every level of beading. At the same time, nature readily offers loads of beadable items. Make sure to have a small drill at the ready. Once holed,
just about anything can become
a symbol of LBI, suitable to be neck- or wrist displayed.
80. Get out and dance – regardless of how many left feet you have. If ever there’s
a locale where spontaneous footwork is fully encouraged, Long Beach Island after-hours is it. A slew of nightspots on Island offer live Jersey Shore bands, spiced with DJ-directed CD selections during the breaks. The music often goes longer than legs will allow.
81. Go quiet at a pub. While many nightspots royally rock the rafters, a goodly number are attuned to
folks who prefer to notch it down and take in tunes while talking into the wee hours.

82. Ongoing favorite: Go to the north end of the Island and watch the parade of
boat traffi c passing the rocks of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.
83. Go ahead and climb Old Barney. It beckons. Even if you’ve done it once, twice
or thrice, it’s always a slightly different look every time you reach the summit. And count those spent calories.
84. Dive into cool ocean water, then rush to the hot sands and roll around in the granular
warmth. Nobody’s watching. Head back to the ocean for a cool de-sanding. Repeat.
85. Have a coastal candy sugar rush. Load up on fudges of many fl avors, saltwater
taffy of every hue, a quiver of 25 fl avors of candy sticks and some peanut brittle (an A.C. thing). Pig out.

86. Beat it down to Bayview Park! Long Beach Township has planned a summer full of
activities at 68th Street and the bay in Brant Beach. Check “Special Activities” at www.LongBeachTownship.com for details.
Monday Madness: Party Crashers provides infl atable family fun every Monday through Aug. 29 (except July 4), 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Come play in our Bounce House or slide on our Wet/Dry Slide or tag a friend in Laser Tag. There’s something different weekly.
Tuesdays in the Township: Spend the day! There’s a guided, 3.2-mile Fun Run at 8 a.m. Park your car for free and head to the beach. Bring your bike and ride with us at 5 p.m. on a 3.2-mile, guided bike ride, conducted by South Jersey Running &Triathlon Co., through Sept. 6. Shower up at the park, grab a bite at a local restaurant and celebrate the breathtaking sunset while enjoying our free concerts, which begin July 5.
Thursday Bay Days: ReClam the bay digs in at 10 a.m. with clams to look at and even adopt; learn about what good citizens of the bay they are.
Alliance for a Living Ocean joins us at 11 a.m. with its Critter Roundup, an in-water seining experience, to fi nd more of our bay’s healthy creatures. Both programs run through
Aug. 25. Beginning July 7, at 2 p.m. Bay Day will continue with a guided kayak eco tour to explore the surrounding waters and nearby islands. Register with the park director between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily for the kayak ecotour. Kayaks are provided.
Friday Fun Days: Island Surf and Sail of Brant Beach presides over silly, safe, fun watersport activities through Aug. 26, including stand-up paddle races, windsurfi ng contests and an “Anything That Floats” competition, all starting at 6 p.m.
87. Out of the blue, throw an LBI pizza party deluxe. Call in the whole crew, everyone in sight.
Just make sure to allow the local parlor time to properly build 20 extra larges. Once the stack of boxes arrives, make the pies Island-ish by placing after-market fruits atop. Use pineapples, mangos, halved seedless grapes, blueberries (it works, just try), even bananas.
88. Go crabbing – again. There are certain fun things that just keep on funning, year after year.
Crabbing surely qualifi es. To give 2011 its own crabby touch, ask around at local tackle shops for some alternative crabbing hotspots. You then meet new places – and new blue claws. Just remember the minimum size regulations.
2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 49
89. Where would fun be without fi shing? Surf fi shing is as cool and coastal as it gets.
Local shops will set you up with the works. HOWEVER, this year you must register with the state. It’s free and extremely easy on-line. Some tackle shops will help you do it. Web site: www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/registryinfo.htm.
90. Reader suggestion. Make up LBI limericks. But, hey, keep ’em clean. “There was
a young surfer named Fred …” Take over from there.
91. Take in the free shows at Fantasy Island.
92. The best of Broadway is no farther away
than the Surfl ight Theatre, Engleside and Beach avenues in Beach Haven. Not only does the famed venue get you close up and personal with the actors, but you can often meet the players. This year the stars are set to really shine brightly. Famed names include Marc Summers, Peter Marshall, Dawn Wells, Judd Hirsch, Cindy Williams, JoAnne Worley and Tommy Emmanuel. Check things out at http://www.surfl ight.org.
50 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI | 2011
93. Better pickin’s than ever. Weekly garage sales shine in the summer. Take in a ton
of them – then have your own. Make sure to register with the town fi rst – and let The SandPaper hype them.
94. Do a Laundromat – even if you have a washer and dryer in-house. It actually can be fun –
and a perfect place to meet new folks. Oddly, it is in the top 10 places where future spouses have met.
95. Get healthifi ed. Be it yoga lessons, group walks or step classes, there’s no better time
or place to fi nally battle back against those ugly advances made by fat cells through the winter. And there’s the added benefi t of meeting fi ne folks of a similar get-healthier ilk. Sure, those brisk, solo walks in the sand qualify as fat fi ghting, but the steps sure come easier when other folk are in lock-step – low-impact competition, as it were.
96. Take in some town meetings. It’s often an oddly effi cient way to get the inside scoop on local
goings-on.
97. Take in Atlantic City – from a distance. Go to the Holgate end of Long Beach Boulevard on a clear,
calm summer’s night. Locked within the quietude of LBI’s south end, think of the ringing racket within the casinos. Oh, go ahead, head down there for a day of high rolling.
98. Sightsee while distance swimming. Maybe not for everyone, doing leisurely laps between jetties on a
calm ocean day is the ultimate in both conditioning and relaxation. Now add the look. Swimming goggles have advanced in comfort and fi t. Seeing the bottom while stroking makes the swim session coolly scenic. Note: So you’re not the best swimmer. Do laps in shallow water by walking along while doing the breaststroke with your arms.
99. Up for a fl ash mob? It’s the latest craze – and harmless, when done with fun intent. Get a big gang
together, come up with some stunt – be it a dance, song, skit – and practice a bit. Then, secretly saturate some popular Island venue. How about the crowded beach at the end of Centre Street in Beach Haven? At the stroke of a given moment – cell phone time is always accurate – commence with the “fl ash.” Make sure to video the public’s response.
2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 51
1. Roll up your pack of cigs in your T-shirt sleeve and join Wicked Rides car club for its Cruise Nights at Stewarts Root
Beer in Tuckerton. The car club members cluster around their chromium-plated carburetors for some great car talk. You can join in while slurping up a softy cone along the banks of Tuckerton Creek. They rev their engines on the first and third Sundays of every month from 6 to 10 p.m.
2. Still have a need for speed? Rent a go-cart at Eagleswood Amusement Park or enjoy a carnival ride or
two. There is also a golf driving range and miniature golf. Route 9 in Eagleswood, 2½ miles south of Route 72. Open daily 11 am till midnight. Call 609-978-0220 for info.
3. The little salt creeks of West Creek Dock Road are waiting for the explorer in you. If you didn’t have
room to pack the kayak, no worries. A new kayak company, West Creek Kayak and Canoe, has opened right on Dock Road. For $35, you can drift with the tide to Barnegat Bay and back all day long. Call 609-296-3030.
4. Any hot summer evening, drive down any of the Dock Roads off Route 9 and see myriad lightning
bugs light up the salt marshes. But don’t chase after them or you’ll get your feet wet.
5. Another night, drive as far as you want into the Pine Barrens, find a safe place to stop the car and look
at the stars. Listen for the whippoorwill and the cicada’s weird buzz-saw zing of a song, especially when it’s really hot.

6. Want to know more about railroading in southern New Jersey? Or how about the origins of those
mysterious concrete blocks in Mystic Island? (They used to anchor the Tuckerton Wireless, once considered the second tallest structure in the world after the Eiffel Tower.) Docents at the Giffordtown Schoolhouse Museum, at the corner of Wisteria Lane and Leitz Boulevard in Tuckerton, have many answers to the history of the original Clam Town. Open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturdays 2 to 4 p.m. Call 609-294-1547 for more info or visit www.tuckertonhistoricalsociety.org
7. Here’s a lighthouse you can climb even if you’re not an athlete. The Tucker’s Island Lighthouse at the
Tuckerton Seaport is a replica of the original, which sank beneath the waters of Barnegat Bay; in fact, the entire Tucker’s Island was gobbled up by the shifting sands of Little Egg Inlet. At the Seaport you’ll learn all about the event as well as decoy carving, duck hunting and clamming. On weekends, there’s even a boat ride down Tuckerton Creek to be had for a nominal fee. Call 609-296-8868 or visit www.tuckertonseaport.org.
8. Care to visit a true road to nowhere? Take a left at Great Bay Boulevard off Route 9 in Tuckerton and head
straight for the bay. The road is also known as Seven Bridges Road, though there are only five wooden bridges – but these are picturesque indeed. The long road to nowhere was a Works Project Administration debacle during the Great Depression. The idea was to build a bridge to Brigantine Island, but either the engineering wasn’t too good (the bay mud wouldn’t support the longer spans) or the project ran out of money. Still, it did employ some folks when times were hard, and it’s a great place to bird watch, fish or launch a kayak.
9. At the end of Seven Bridges Road, you’ll see an old Coast Guard station. It’s now home of the
Rutgers Marine Institute, and though they open to the public only once a year, it’s a pretty sight at sunset. A ruined factory to the left of the marshes is “The Old Fish Factory,” where menhaden used to be turned into fertilizer. The ghosts of countless schools of the oily fish are said to haunt the island.
10. Farther down Route 9, take a left at Stage Road and follow the old stagecoach road that
used to connect the Revolutionary towns of Tuckerton and New Gretna to Batsto and eventually Camden. Not 15 minutes from Tuckerton, find Bass River State Park, where for a fee you can swim in the cool, cedar waters of Lake Absegami. The soft, brown water is colored from the tannins in the cedar and oak forest the streams run through. There is a wooden boardwalk through a cedar swamp; maybe you’ll find a carnivorous pitcher plant growing on the banks. Ask a forest ranger. There are campsites and cabins for rent. Call 609-296-1114 for special free programs and information.
11. If you’re willing to travel an extra 15 minutes on Stage Road, then continue to Batsto State Historic
Park and visit the site of the Batsto Mansion and furnace, where cannon balls were forged out of bog iron and used to fight the British in the Revolutionary War. There’s a whole interesting story about the site, and the park has a terrific visitors interpretive center that tells it. The mansion is also open weekends for tours, but call ahead for tickets and more information: 609-561-0024.
2011 | 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI 53
12. Remember those old-fashioned drive-in movies, where the whining of mosquitoes mixed
in with the soundtrack? The Little Egg Harbor Township recreation committee and Soundmasters DJ host free drive-ins, weather permitting. Planned movie nights are July 8 and Aug. 12 at the community center on Calabreeze Way at dusk. Free popcorn is provided. Call 609-296-9700 for more information.
13. Itching to hear some good, old pinelands music? It’s like bluegrass and country with a
dose of regional quirkiness. The Albert Music Hall opens its doors at 7:30 every Saturday night with a full lineup of six talented groups for the insanely low admission price of $5.
Tap your toes and slap your thighs to the Pine Barons, Woodlot Howlers and Hillbilly Waters. The music continues till 11:30 at night, and if you’re so inclined and play a stringed instrument, head over to the pickin’ shed, where everybody’s singing for free. Albert Music Hall is located in Waretown; call 609-971-1593 or visit www.alberthall.org.
14. Visit Popcorn Park Zoo off Lacey Road in Forked River and view hundreds of rescued exotic and
farm animals. The park located in the pines has become a caring “forever home” to these once-abused, abandoned or injured animals. See African lions, tigers, a camel, Australian wallabies, a black bear and many more domestic farm and exotic animals. Popcorn is available to feed the free-ranging chickens and peacocks and some farm animals. Admission of $5 helps with the upkeep of the park. Seniors and children younger than 12, $4; children younger than 3 enter for free. Call 609-693-1900 for directions; gates are open from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m.
15. Pop into Pine Shores Art Association at 94 Stafford Ave. in Manahawkin on Wednesday
and Sunday afternoons and view artwork by local artists. Pine Shores also offers classes and workshops, and, for the artist who requires nothing but a model, life drawing classes from the model on Thursday evenings and portrait sessions Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. Call 609-597-3557 or visit www.pineshoresartassociation.org.
54 99 Ways to Have Fun on LBI | 2011
16. Every Monday at 7 p.m. starting July 12, the Stafford Historical Society presents free community
concerts preceded by a historical program at the OceanFirst Theater, 100 McKinley Ave. in Stafford Township. The music ranges from bluegrass to barbershop. (Monday, Aug. 16, is not free; tickets for the South Jersey Wind Ensemble are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $5 for children younger than 13. Call 609-489-8600 or visit www.njstac.org
17. Sure, LBI has bay beaches, but so do Barnegat, Stafford and Little Egg Harbor Townships; they’re
the west side of the bay and just a bit harder to find. Stafford Township’s beach is located on Jennifer Lane in the Beach Haven West section of the township, Barnegat’s beach is off East Bay Avenue, and Little Egg Harbor’s is at the end of Parkertown Dock Road. All three beaches are free. Stafford and Barnegat’s have lifeguards; it’s swim at your own risk in Little Egg. Bring bug spray!
18. While in Barnegat on the way to the beach stop at Heritage Village at 691 East Bay Ave.
The Barnegat Historical Society maintains three large period buildings with artifacts and records detailing Barnegat’s seafaring history and three smaller out buildings. The Village is open on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
19. Hiking or trail biking in the Pine Barrens couldn’t be easier than at Wells Mills County Park,
Route 532 in Ocean Township (Waretown). Wells Mills, with 900 acres, is the largest park in the Ocean County system and has many well-marked trails. Stop at the three-story visitors center, sign in for safety and pick up a map. The park is open dawn to dusk and is free. There are also canoe rentals available for Wells Mills Lake. For more info, call 609-971-3085.
20. Family biking on the Barnegat Branch Rail Trail sure is pleasant. A bit more than
three miles of the planned 15-mile trek has been completed, from Barnegat to Ocean Township. The trail follows the old Tuckerton Railroad line that took passengers from Whitings to the shore. Some historical signs tell the tale. Park for free off West Bay Avenue in the heart of Barnegat.
