Seller Insight It was the fact that this was a lovely, big family home in a very desirable location that initially attracted us to it,” says Peter. “When we purchased it 25 years ago, we had one small child, a baby on the way and a plan for one

more. It soon became obvious that it would be a stunning place to bring up our growing family. The numerous local schools, both state and private, are fantastic; Kew Village, which is just a stone’s throw away is absolutely charming; we have the wide-open green spaces of Kew Green, Kew Gardens themselves 5 minutes walk away and the 2,500 acre Richmond Park with its deer herds and abundant wildlife, just ten minutes drive away. All this and we’re only 8 miles from Trafalgar Square,” added Nicola.

“A previous owner had converted the property into flats and bedsits, so we had to do a great deal of work to transform it back into a family home. We went up into the loft and added two extra bedrooms and a bathroom, and we altered the layout of the main living areas to give us a big open space more conducive to modern family life. In terms of the style of the house, I’d describe it as a happy fusion between traditional and contemporary.”

“Over the years we’ve also done a lot of work on the garden and completely transformed it,” continues Peter. “The French doors from the sitting room open onto a lovely patio terrace, but the rest has been planted with large architectural jurassic plants that not only give structure to the space but also give it a much more interesting look.”

The large family kitchen come dining room with its wood burning stove is the real heart of the home, but we also love the sitting room which has a big open fire and French doors that lead straight out onto the garden. “We’ve also added a very attractive summerhouse, which has become a very quiet retreat we tend to use as a reading room.”

“We love the location of the house and although we plan to downsize we fully intend to stay in the area,” says Nicola. “Kew Green is so quintessentially English with its summer cricket matches, cosy pubs with the added benefit of Antony Worrall Thompson’s Kew Grill. Kew village itself really is a village in every sense of the word. There’s a lovely array of shops, pavement cafes and restaurants, one of which has a Michelin star. All this, with a tube line to central London, easy access to the motorway network and Heathrow airport just down the road. Richmond town centre is only five minutes drive away, with the stunning Richmond Green, Richmond Theatre, Richmond Bridge with a most beautiful stretch of the River Thames and a high street with every major chain and fashion store you can think of. Perfect.”

“We have a large, dry cellar. When the children were small, they used it as a play room, but it’s now crying out to be turned into a cinema come TV room,” says Peter. “It’s a really useful extra space that we just never got round to using properly once the children had grown up.”

“As we’ve decided to downsize, it will be the feeling of space and those lovely, high Edwardian ceilings that we’ll miss most when we leave,” says Peter. “This has been a really fantastic family home, we’ve loved everything about it and we’ll take away some wonderfully happy memories.”
