STUDIA PATRISTICA VOL. LIII - LXXPapers presented at the Sixteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies
held in Oxford 2011
Edited by VINZENT M.
The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on
Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis
of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world
and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century
to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small
and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of docu-
ments, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers
put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic
scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

MARCION AND THE DATING OF THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELSVINZENT M.
Are the Synoptic Gospels at odds with Early Christian art and archaeology? Art and archaeology can-
not provide the material basis ‘to secure the irrefutable inner continuity’ of the Christian beginnings
(Erich Dinkler); can the Synoptic Gospels step in? Their narratives, however, are as absent from the
first hundred and fourty years of early Christianity as are their visual imageries. ‘Many of the dates
confidently assigned by modern experts to the New Testament documents’, especially the Gospels,
rest ‘on presuppositions rather than facts’ (J.A.T. Robinson). The present volume is the first systematic
study of all available early evidence that we have about the first witness to our Gospel narratives,
Marcion of Sinope. It evaluates our commonly known arguments for dating the Synoptic Gospels,
elaborates on Marcion’s crucial role in the Gospel making and argues for a re-dating of the Gospels
to the years between 138 and 144 AD.

THEODOTUS OF ANCYRA’S HOMILIES AND THE COUNCIL OF EPHESUS (431)FRENKEL L.M.
A substantial proportion of surviving late-antique conciliar homilies are by Theodotus, metropolitan
bishop of Ancyra. Here presented in English translation, they provide valuable evidence for an essen-
tial and effective means of communication by which councils presented and enforced themselves. The
analysis relates their content to the conciliar settings, considers the conventions of ancient rhetoric,
and reflects the reception of the texts, especially through collections of conciliar documents. The book
clarifies the regional parameters and disputes over episcopal territorial authority in which Theodotus’
theology and pastoral activity developed. Both informed his overall positive and constructive perspec-
tive on faith and the role of preachers and bishops, promoting unity and cohesion. The analysis of
Theodotus’ involvement in the First Council of Ephesus, especially in the techniques used to shape
and preserve allegiances and to defend a view or decision, contributes to an understanding of the
processes of identity formation, seeking agreement, and proclaiming consensus, even when it had not
been achieved.

UN DOSSIER DE L’ÉPISTOLAIRE AUGUSTINIEN: LA CORRESPONDANCE ENTRE L’AFRIQUE ET ROME À PROPOS DE L’AFFAIRE PÉLAGIENNE (416-418)Traduction, commentaire et annotations
DALMON L.

EMPIRE, CHURCH AND SOCIETY IN THE LATE ROMAN NEAR EAST: GREEKS, JEWS, SYRIANS AND SARACENS(Collected Studies, 2004-2014)
MILLAR F.
This book brings together thirty separate studies of the complex religious, communal and religious
history of the Roman Near East in the period from the conversion of the Emperor Constantine to
Christianity in CE 312 to the first Islamic invasion in CE 632. A newly-written Epilogue, ‘Open
Questions’, reviews the different fields of study involved, and asks how far what we find helps to
understand the origins of Islam. Pagan Greeks and Greek-speaking Christians, as well as Jews and
Samaritans using Hebrew and Aramaic, co-existed, as did a new Christian community using Syriac, a
branch of Aramaic. The complex and extensive evidence for this multicultural world has had to be
approached in separate studies, while retaining a sense of communal co-existence and mutual relation-
ships. The papers have been edited so as to appear in a consistent form, and are arranged in groups
intended to offer a coherent overall structure. It is hoped that they will stimulate further work on this
important phase in cultural and religious history.

THE NEW JUDASThe Case of Nestorius in Ecclesiastical Politics, 428-451 CE
BEVAN G.A.
The New Judas is a new account of the life of Nestorius (428-431 CE), the Christological controversy
that engulfed him, as well as the critical imperial interventions into ecclesiastical politics during the
period from the First Council of Ephesus to the Council of Chalcedon. This work endeavours to use
both Nestorius’ own Liber Heraclidis, preserved only in Syriac, as well as the unprecedented abun-
dance of primary documents in Greek and Latin from Acta Conciliorum Oecumenicorum, to answer a
question of fundamental historical importance: How could the teaching of Christ’s two natures, one
so closely identified with Nestorius, deposed in 431, be vindicated in all its essentials at the Council
of Chalcedon in twenty years later? The answer requires not only a reconsideration of the role of the
supposedly timid emperor Theodosius II, but also a new understanding of the evolving position of
Nestorius’ chief opponent, Cyril of Alexandria.

THE UNIQUELY AFRICAN CONTROVERSYStudies on Donatist Christianity
DUPONT A., GAUMER M.A., LAMBERIGTS M. (eds)
Roman North Africa was one of the major centres where ancient Christianity thrived, and there
Donatism was the most prevalent form of Christianity. This neglected story from Late Antiquity is
treated in a multi-disciplinary way in the current volume. The Uniquely African Controversy: Studies on Donatist Christianity seeks to uncover what the identity and historical context of Donatism was,
and why it disappeared. What was Donatism’s legacy? Who were its leaders and adherents? Why did
Augustine of Hippo become so embroiled in controversy with the Donatist Church? The contribu-
tions to this volume come from scholars from North America, Europe, and Australia, and they cover
topics including archaeology, Roman law, theology, martyrology, and ecclesiastical history.• 2015 – Late Antique History and

SEEING THROUGH THE EYES OF FAITHNew Approaches to the Mystagogy of the Church Fathers
VAN GEEST P. (ed.)
In the course of the past years an interest in precisely the mystagogy of the Church Fathers developed
at various Dutch universities. Interest in the mystagogy of the Church Fathers increased because it
was recognised that its study did justice both to the intention of the Church Fathers themselves and
to the increasing demand for spirituality. It was not their primary intention to put forward a rational
reflection on the depositum fidei as such or to pass on knowledge of it as a goal in itself. Their goal
was rather to initiate a process aimed not so much at intellectual formation as at an existential trans-
formation by means of rituals, catechesis and the explanation of stories and images from Biblical
traditions. In this book the main focus was on the mystagogy of the Church Fathers. The assumption
was that philological, historical and theological methods complement each other in the approach to
the Church Fathers as mystagogues. Consequently the manner in which they attempt to shape their
introduction into the mystery of Christ was regarded from an interdisciplinary point of view. The
contributions to this book form a first sketch of the research area of the mystagogy of the Church
Fathers, as it is taking shape at present.

DER KOMMENTAR CYRILLS VON ALEXANDRIEN ZUM 1. KORINTHERBRIEFEinleitung, kritischer Text, Übersetzung, Einzelanalyse
ZAWADZKI K.F.
Patriarchen.

PAUL’S GRAECO-ROMAN CONTEXTBREYTENBACH C. (ed.)
These papers of the 62nd Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July 16-18, 2013) illustrate that the
Apostle Paul is an excellent example for the cultural exchange so typical of the eastern provinces of
the Roman Empire during the early imperial age. He was a Jew from Tarsus and regarded himself,
according to his own words, as Hebrew descended from Hebrews, and as Pharisee according to the
way of interpreting the Law. However, he wrote his letters in Greek, showing acquaintance not only
with the Greek translations of the Law and the Prophets, but also with contemporary Greek philo-
sophical concepts, rhetorical style and e.g. the tradition of Euripides’ tragedies. He lived and worked
in several Roman colonies and absorbed Romanized concepts, metaphors and a vision of reaching
from the eastern frontier of the Empire to Spain in the West. Influenced by different intellectual
worlds, Paul stood at the crossroads of cultural interaction.• 2015 – Bibliotheca Ephemeridum

THE APOCRYPHAL GOSPELS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF EARLY CHRISTIAN THEOLOGYSCHRÖTER J. (ed.)
Recent scholarship has become increasingly aware of the significance of the apocryphal gospels for the
transmission and interpretation of the Jesus tradition in the first three or four centuries. Against this
background the 60th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense was devoted to these texts and their role and
status in the formation of the New Testament Canon. The present volume contains the proceedings
of the conference. Some of its contributions deal with well-known apocryphal gospels as, e.g., the
Gospels of Thomas, Mary, Peter or Judas. Other essays treat thematic aspects, such as the influence
of Platonic tradition, the way Jesus is presented in these gospels, or his dialogues with his (male and
female) disciples. Important facets of the present volume are also early traditions about Jesus, e.g., in
the so-called Infancy Gospels or in texts on the Virgin Mary. The volume thus gives an extensive
overview of important areas of current research on the apocryphal gospels within early Christian
theology.

THE ASCENSION OF ISAIAHBREMMER J.N., KARMANN T.R., NICKLAS T. (eds)
This book is one of the first modern collections of studies on important aspects of the Ascension of Isaiah, which occupies a special place among the early Christian writings, due to its complicated origin
and its relevance in regards of the early Christian self-understanding in respect of the Jews. The
volume starts with an analysis of the place of the Ascension in the development of early Christian
prophecy and continues with several chapters that discuss the problems of the date, provenance, genre
and interpretation of the Ascension as well as its potential relationship to Marcion. The following
chapters focus on various aspects of the Ascension, such as its mystical character, oracular nature,
self-designation, Johannist constellation, religious experience, cosmology, the descent of Christ, escha-
tology and the Virgin birth. A final chapter looks at P. Amh. I 1, the Greek witness to the Ascension of Isaiah. The volume concludes, as has become customary, with a bibliography and index.• 2015 – Studies on Early Christian

ORIGENIANA UNDECIMA: ORIGEN AND ORIGENISM IN THE HISTORY OF WESTERN THOUGHTJACOBSEN A.-C. (ed.)
The 11th Origeniana conference took place at Aarhus University, Denmark, in August 2013. The theme of the conference was Origen and Origenism in the History of Western Thought. The present volume contains a large selection from the papers that were given at the conference. The majority of the papers deals with various aspects of the influence and reception of Origen and his thought and writings in Western traditions to this day. As was the case also in previous conferences, there was an opportunity to give papers on other aspects of current Origen research. The volume contains seven sections: Origen’s thought in modern theology and philosophy; philological approaches to Origen’s works; Origen’s thought in the West in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; Origen’s thought in the West until John Scotus Eriugena; Origen in Western mysticism and liturgy; the reception of Origen in the East.

MARKSCHIES C., VAN OORT J. (eds)

RELIGION AND COMPETITION IN ANTIQUITYENGELS D., VAN NUFFELEN P. (eds)
The notion of competition has become crucial to our understanding of Greek and Roman religion
and is often invoked to explain religious changes and to describe the relationship between various
cults. This volume seeks to raise our awareness of what the notion implies and to test its use for the
analysis of ancient religions. The papers range from Classical Greece, Hellenistic Babylon, Rome and
the Etruscans, to Late Antiquity and the rise of Islam. They seek to determine how much can be
gained in each individual case by understanding religious interaction in terms of rivalry and competi-
tion. In doing so, the volume hopes to open a more explicit debate on the analytical tools with which
ancient religion is currently being studied.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY IN LATE ANTIQUITYLife, Death and Interaction
LAES C., MUSTAKALLIO K., VUOLANTO V. (eds)
This volume continues the series of five previous Roman Family publications, and puts special focus
on social history and living conditions in the familial contexts. It concentrates on three interlinked
aspects of family life and interaction: liminal situations regarding demography and ecological factors
that lay down the framework for family life, liminal conditions on the edges of familial life regarding
child labour, child slaves and sexual attitudes towards children, and local traditions which confront us
with people and cultures at the borders of the Roman Empire. By focusing on three recurring points
of departure (Late Antiquity, children and childhood, and the encounter between various cultures),
and by presenting a wide variety of methodological approaches (from rhetorical analysis of discourses
to statistical analysis, and from experiential life stories to iconographic analysis), the present volume
offers a view on the status quaestionis of Roman family studies, and widens the thematic points of
departure for the study of the Roman family, thus hopefully pointing to fruitful directions for further
studies.

PRIESTS AND PROPHETS AMONG PAGANS, JEWS AND CHRISTIANSDIGNAS B., PARKER R., STROUMSA G.G. (eds)
The emperor Julian pointed out that the duties of priesthood were better understood among
‘the impious Galileans’ (i.e. Christians) than among his pagan contemporaries. Like the emperor, the
essays in this volume look in both directions. Its pages are populated by very diverse figures: Plutach,
Aelius Aristides, Alexander of Abonouteichos, Daniel the Stylite, Gregory of Nazianzus, Shenoute of
Atripe, Mani, Muhammad, and a host of anonymous Greek and Roman priests, prophets, and divin-
ers. The priests of second temple Judaism are considered too. Both in the Greco-Roman and the early
Christian worlds the neat division between priests and prophets proves hard to sustain. But in terms
of fame and influence a strong contrast emerges between Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian proph-
ets; this is why it is only among Jews and Christians that ‘false prophets’ are feared. Two recurrent
preoccupations are the relation of priests and prophets to secular power, and the priest/prophet not
as reality but as idea, an imagined figure. Leading scholars of the religions of antiquity come together
in this wide-ranging and innovative volume.

is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very
specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as “Bawit: a monastic community,
its structure and texts”, “Thebes in Late Antiquity”, or “The reconstruction and edition of Coptic

DIJKSTRA J.H.F., FISHER G. (eds)
In recent years, exciting new discoveries of inscriptions and archaeological remains on the Arabian
Peninsula have led to a re-evaluation of the peoples on the Arabian frontier, which through their
extensive contacts with Rome and Persia are now seen as dynamic participants in the Late Antique
world. The present volume contributes to this recent trend by focusing on the contrast between the
‘outside’ sources on the peoples of the frontier - the Roman view - and the ‘inside’ sources, that is,
the precious material produced by the Arabs themselves, and by approaching these sources within an
anthropological framework of how peripheral peoples face larger powers. For the first time, the situ-
ation on the Arabian frontier is also compared with that on the southern Egyptian frontier, where
similar sources have been found of peoples such as the Blemmyes and Noubades. Thus, the volume
offers a richly-documented examination of the frontier interactions in these two vibrant and critically-
important areas of the Late Antique East.

EGYPT IN THE FIRST MILLENNIUM ADPerspectives from New Fieldwork
O’CONNELL E.R. (ed.)
This volume contains the proceedings of the twenty-first annual British Museum Egyptology
Colloquium, which was the first in the series dedicated to post-pharaonic Egypt. The volume inves-
tigates continuity and change in the archaeological record in the First Millennium AD, focusing on
the transitions to and from Late Antiquity (AD 250-800), when Egypt’s population became Christian
and, later, Islam was introduced. The fourteen contributors, representing the overlapping disciplines
of Egyptology, Archaeology and Art History with specialisations in the pharaonic, Roman and Late
Antique periods, present the results of new archaeological research at a range of sites currently under
investigation. Seeking to identify trends and compare results, the volume is organised according
to four major themes: 1) settlements, 2) cemeteries, 3) settling rock-cut tombs and quarries and
4) temple- church-mosque. Many of the contributions address adaptive reuse of earlier architecture,
the recycling of earlier monuments as building material (i.e. spolia), or both. Traditionally neglected
by modern scholars in favour of other periods in Egypt’s long history, the study of First Millennium
AD archaeology offers increasingly better opportunities to evaluate both Egypt’s distinctiveness and
its role within the wider Mediterranean region.

COPTIC PARADIGMSA Summary of Sahidic Coptic Morphology
STERLING G.E.
Facility in reading an ancient language requires several competencies: control of the morphology,
a working vocabulary of common words and phrases, and a grasp of syntax. This pedagogical aide
addresses the first of these by collecting the basic forms and patterns of Sahidic Coptic and presenting
them in a convenient format. It is not a full grammar, but a supplement to a grammar. The work
provides beginning students with an overview of the morphology of Sahidic Coptic so that they can
see the whole of a part of speech or pattern as they learn discrete parts. It offers those who once
learned Coptic but have not been able to maintain it with a concise review. While the work is not
exhaustive, it is complete enough that it can serve as a useful reference for those who teach Coptic. • 2008

COPTIC IN 20 LESSONSIntroduction to Sahidic Coptic With Exercises & Vocabularies
LAYTON B.
Coptic in 20 Lessons is written by the author of the most authoritative reference grammar of the Coptic
language, and is based on decades of pedagogical experience. In easy steps and simple explanations, it
teaches the patterns and syntax of Sahidic Coptic, along with the most useful vocabulary. Drills,
compositions, and translation exercises enable the student to gain fluency. All words that occur more
than fifty times in the Sahidic New Testament are introduced lesson by lesson in vocabulary lists,
which are arranged by semantic field and accompanied by both Greek equivalents and English glosses.
The book concludes with three chapters of the Gospel of Mark, in which all new vocabulary is glossed
in footnotes. Coptic in 20 Lessons is the ideal resource for use in the classroom or for teaching oneself
Coptic. Critical acclaim for this book: “Coptic in 20 Lessons is the up-to-date teaching grammar that
Coptic studies has long needed. ... There is no better way to learn Coptic.” David Brakke, Indiana
University “Layton brings to this book a life-long experience of teaching, combined with the author-
ity of his masterly Coptic Grammar, arguably the best grammar of Sahidic Coptic ever written, from
which the present work is distilled... A state-of-the-art account.” Ariel Shisha-Halevy, Hebrew

COPTIC GNOSTIC CHRESTOMATHYA Selection of Coptic Texts with Grammatical Analysis and Glossary
LAYTON B.
Layton’s «Coptic Gnostic Chrestomathy» is an essential tool for scholars and students of the Gnostic
corpus. This useful and accurate text edition contains a large, representative selection of works in
Coptic, ranging from Sethian Gnostic classics such as the «Apocryphon of John» to Valentinian works
like the «Gospel of Truth» and «Gospel of Philip» to the Mesopotamian «Gospel of Thomas the
Contender», all but one from the Nag Hammadi manuscript hoard. Laid out in a readable literary
format, the Coptic text is discreetly analyzed into its component morphs, clarifying the grammatical
structure at every point. Greek words are annotated in footnotes, and esoteric Gnostic vocabulary in
Egyptian Coptic is covered in a separate glossary. A brief introduction to each work points to informa-
tion on problems of dialect, grammar, manuscript, and scholarly bibliography. Contents (in Coptic):
Apocryphon of John, Apocalypse of Adam, Hypostasis of the Archons, Thunder-Perfect Mind,
Trimorphic Protennoia, Gospel of the Egyptians, Zostrianos, Allogenes, Three Steles of Seth, Gospel
of Truth, Prayer of the Apostle Paul, Treatise on Resurrection, Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Thomas,
Book of Thomas the Contender. Corresponding English translations of all these works can be found
in Bentley Layton, The Gnostic Scriptures.

Grundgedanken in besonders charakteristischer Weise hervor.

CATALOGUE OF THE SYRIAC MANUSCRIPTS AND FRAGMENTS IN THE LIBRARY OF DEIR AL-SURIAN, WADI AL-NATRUN (EGYPT)BROCK S., VAN ROMPAY L.
Deir al-Surian, the famous Monastery of the Syrians in Egypt, has long been known for its unique
collection of Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, and Ethiopian manuscripts. This catalogue provides detailed
descriptions of the 48 Syriac manuscripts (many of them composite) and the more than 180 fragments
that are preserved in the Monastery today. Ranging in date from the 5th to the 18th century and with
a majority of them being earlier than the 10th century, the manuscripts present us with major authors
and works of the Syriac literary tradition. They include biblical texts (among them the earliest dated
Gospel manuscript in any language), original Syriac compositions, and translations from Greek and
(occasionally) Coptic. Several works were previously unattested. Connections with manuscripts from
Deir al-Surian that are preserved in European collections (primarily the British Library) are indicated
wherever relevant. Colophons and various kinds of notes by scribes, readers, owners, and occasional
visitors also receive attention, thus allowing interesting glimpses into the history not only of individual
manuscripts, but also of the Monastery and its library. Accompanying the catalogue is an album
containing more than 300 pages of images.

APOCRYPHA, PSEUDEPIGRAPHA AND ARMENIAN STUDIES. COLLECTED PAPERS: VOLUME IIISTONE M.E.
This volume comprises a collection of papers by Michael E. Stone, written over a period of 35 years.
Stone is a leading scholar in two different fields of research, the Jewish literature of the Second Temple
period including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Armenian Studies. So this collection includes essays relat-
ing to the origins and nature of the Apocryphal literature and its relationship with the Dead Sea
Scrolls, as well as more specific studies devoted to themes that have interested Stone throughout his
career, including Messianism, 4 Ezra, Adam and Eve, and Aramaic Levi Document. His Armenian
interests have embraced the Armenian Biblical text, Armenian pilgrimage to and presence in the Holy
Land and Armenian paleography and epigraphy. Papers included in the volumes, some of which were
originally published in obscure venues, touch on all these themes.• 2015 – Orientalia Lovaniensia Analecta

A DICTIONARY OF CHRISTIAN PALESTINIAN ARAMAICSOKOLOFF M.
Christian Palestinian Aramaic is the name of the Aramaic dialect spoken and written by the Melkite
community in Palestine during the first millennium CE. Nearly all of the texts that have survived in
this dialect are translations of religious texts originally composed in Greek for the use of members of
this community whose only language was Aramaic. The only complete dictionary of this dialect was
published over a century ago by Fr. Schulthess in 1903. However, since then, many new texts have
been published and many previously known ones have been restudied and republished more accu-
rately by various scholars. The present work has taken into account all of the existing texts as well as
the secondary literature in order to make this new dictionary an essential tool for Aramaic scholarship.• 2014 – Orientalia Lovaniensia Analecta

SCRIPTS BEYOND BORDERSA Survey of Allographic Traditions in the Euro-Mediterranean World
DEN HEIJER J., SCHMIDT A., PATARIDZE T. (eds)
This collection of essays deals with the phenomenon of allography, taken in the sense of the practice
of writing a language in the script of another language. Although by no means all texts highlighted in
the essays are of a religious character, they are written in the scripts that are connected with the three
monotheistic traditions stemming from the Eastern Mediterranean: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The time span covered ranges from Late Antiquity to (early) modern times. The volume contains
studies on such cases as Aljamiado (Romance languages of Spain written in Arabic or Hebrew script
but also Bosnian in Arabic script), Judaeo-Arabic, karshuni (Arabic but occasionally also other lan-
guages written in Syriac script), and various combinations of languages written in the Greek, Syriac,
Armenian and Georgian scripts. In each case, the approach is both philological, concentrating on the
various systems of adaptation of the scripts to the phonetics of the languages in question, and his-
torical, with a focus on aspects of intercultural contact and exchange, as well as on the emergence and
development of the various allographic traditions over time. Particularly important questions, dis-
cussed in several contributions, are whether specific communities used scripts of a language other than
their own for practical or rather for ideological, identity-related considerations, and how these writing
practices relate to the sociocultural contexts in which they functioned and developed.

RITES AND RITUALS OF THE CHRISTIAN EASTProceedings of the Fourth International Congress of the Society of Oriental Liturgy, Leba-

GROEN B., GALADZA D., GLIBETIC N., RADLE G. (eds)
This book comprises twenty-one selected papers from the Fourth Congress of the international schol-
arly Society of Oriental Liturgy, held at the Universities of Notre Dame and Balamand in Lebanon,
July 2012. These articles reflect studies on Coptic, Ethiopian and Eritrean, Syriac, Greek-Byzantine,
Slavonic, and other liturgies. The authors examine, inter alia, the rites of matrimony, the blessing of
the waters, and the Eucharistic Prothesis; developments in Christian iconography; early Christian
worship and liturgical theology; new methodological approaches. The papers discuss both the his-
torical practice of diverse Eastern Churches and the current situation. The present collection of articles

SCRIBES AND SCRIPTURESThe Church of the East in the Eastern Ottoman Provinces (1500-1850)
MURRE-VAN DEN BERG H.L.
Little is left that testifies to the life of the Church of the East in the sixteenth to early nineteenth
centuries. What we have, are manuscripts written by mostly clerical scribes for mostly clerical readers.
There is much that suggests, however, that these texts functioned in a much wider circle than merely
that of the learned. This study takes the scribal production of texts, from the Holy Scriptures to the
first traces of popular writing, as its main source to analyze the major changes that took place in the
Church of the East in the period. The most important of these was the introduction of Western
Catholicism, which ultimately led to the creation of two separate hierarchies, today’s Chaldean
Church and the Assyrian Church of the East. How this community dealt with these monumental
changes, how that affected everything from the production of texts to the fabric of society as a whole,
and how that contributes to our understanding of this Church’s modern day off-shoots, is the topic
of this study.

SYRIAC ENCOUNTERSPapers from the Sixth North American Syriac Symposium, Duke University, 26-29 June
2011
DOERFLER M., FIANO E., SMITH K. (eds)
The Sixth North American Syriac Symposium brought together scholars from across North America,
Europe, the Middle East, and India. Syriac Encounters offers twenty-four papers that were originally
delivered at the Symposium, and represents a cross-section of both the Symposium and the current
state of Syriac studies more broadly. Although most of the papers in the volume focus on the late
antique heyday of Syriac Christianity, several papers contribute to the study of other, related fields,
including Islamic studies and Middle Eastern anthropology. The blossoming of Syriac studies beyond
church history and Semitic philology can be attributed to a wider recognition of the Syriac language
and culture as a bridge linking (and fostering encounters between) Rome and Persia, Byzantium and
Baghdad, and Christianity and Islam.

THE SYRIAC VERSION OF JOHN CHRYSOSTOM’S COMMENTARY ON JOHN I. MÊMRÊ 1-43Critical edition of the Syriac text (T) and English translation (V)
CHILDERS J.W.
St. John Chrysostom was one of the most popular and influential Greek Fathers in Syrian churches.
His works began to be translated into Syriac in the fifth century, after which they significantly
impacted the shape of Syriac exegetical, homiletical, dogmatic, and spiritual writing. These volumes
make available for the first time an edition of the Syriac text and English translation of St. John
Chrysostom’s Exegetical Homilies on the Gospel of John, typically known in Syriac as Chrysostom’s
Commentary on John, Homilies (Mêmrê) 1–43. The text is edited on the basis of the extant main
manuscripts, from the 6th–8th centuries, in addition to excerpts preserved in various collections.
Introductions to the two volumes explore the Syriac manuscript tradition, the origin and technique
of the translation, its value as a witness to the Greek text, the nature of its many biblical citations, and
the impact of the version on the Syriac tradition. The volumes include an orthographical index
and an index of biblical citations.

HISTOIRE DE MĀR ABBA, CATHOLICOS DE L’ORIENT. MARTYRES DE MĀR GRIGOR, GÉNÉRAL EN CHEF DU ROI KHUSRO Ier ET DE MĀR YAZD-PANĀH, JUGE ET GOUVERNEUREdition critique des textes syriaques (T) et traduction française (V)
JULLIEN F.

DIONIGI AREOPAGITA. NOMI DIVINI, TEOLOGIA MISTICA, EPISTOLELa versione siriaca di Sergio di Rēš‘aynā (VI secolo)
Edizione critica del testo siriaco (T) e traduzione italiana (V)
FIORI E.

In

THE HOMILY OF ZÄR’A YA‛ƎQOB’S MÄṢḤAFÄ BƎRHAN ON THE RITE OF BAPTISM AND RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTIONCritical Edition of the Ethiopian Text (T) and English translation (V)
GETATSHEW HAILE
The text in this volume (with its translation) is from the writings of Emperor Zär’a Ya‛ǝqob, the
prolific scholar who reformed the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the fifteenth century. In this hom-
ily he addresses in detail the ritual of Christian baptism and the requirement of religious instruction
for the baptized faithful as well as the would-be baptized catechumens. The ritual for adults is dis-
cussed and defined with thoroughness and clarity not found in any other source. Significantly, the
text suggests that there was at that time a large number of non-Christians who converted to Orthodox
Christianity, either of their own free will or due to pressure from Christian rulers, including the
Emperor. As always, Zär’a Ya‛ǝqob uses his authority to enforce religious instruction as he details it.
He prescribes harsh corporal punishment, usually flogging, to individuals who do not attend school
without acceptable excuses—which are illness and going on military expeditions—as well as to clergy
who neglect their duty to teach and to district rulers who do not force people to come to school.

attestate negli altri testimoni.

CORPUS OF BYZANTINE CHURCH MOSAIC PAVEMENTS IN ISRAEL AND THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIESMADDEN A.M.
This is a catalogue of church, chapel and monastery mosaic pavements discovered within the borders
of Israel and the Palestinian Territories (Roman Palestine). Chronologically, it spans the early 4th to
8th centuries, the latter period seemingly designating the cessation of mosaic manufacture in early
Christian edifices in Palestine based on current archaeological findings. Sites are arranged alphabeti-
cally and according to the four Roman provinces that encompassed the region, and to which it is
believed each originally belonged. The primary name chosen for each site (in most cases) correlates
with the site name used in the indispensable gazetteer Tabula Imperii Romani Iudaea Palaestina
(1994), allowing for relatively simple site identification and cross-referencing. In order to simplify the
mosaic design descriptions, the catalogue utilises a system of geometric pattern coding. For each site,
a map reference is given for the Israel Grid, followed by a brief outline of its excavation or survey, a
thorough description of the pavements including the coding system, inscriptions (if present), a com-
mentary including proposed dates (if given) and bibliography. The indexes include a concise list of
occurrences for each pattern code, figural designs and iconoclastic damage; for inscriptions, ecclesias-
tical titles, named mosaicists and cited provincial dating eras.

ON THE FRINGE OF COMMENTARYMetatextuality in Ancient Near Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Cultures
AUFRÈRE S.H., ALEXANDER P.S., PLEŠE Z. (eds)
This volume contains the papers of the second meeting of the international scholarly network “The
Hermeneutic of Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” held in Aix-en-Provence (September 25-27, 2008).
Drawing on Gérard Genette’s theory of the five different types of “transtextuality” (Palimpsestes, Paris
1982) – intertextuality, paratextuality, metatextuality, hypertextuality, and architextuality – , the vol-
ume discusses the practices of metatextuality as diverse as commentaries, hypomnemata, pesharim,
targumim, Talmud, allegoresis, glosses, scholia, catenae, questions-and-responses (erotapocriseis), pro-
phetic extracts, hypotheses, homilies, integumenta and involucra, Keys to Dreams, translations, and
transliterations in the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultures. Presented with an introduc-
tion designed to expand and re-contextualize this issue, the eighteen communications discuss common
strategies of metatextuality in Greek and Jewish culture as well as its various manifestations in the
Septuagint and other Jewish texts, in the literature of the Ancient Near East and Egypt, in the Greco-
Roman world, and in the late antique and medieval literature.

L’ÉCOLE DE GAZA: ESPACE LITTÉRAIRE ET IDENTITÉ CULTURELLE DANS L’ANTIQUITÉ TARDIVEActes du Colloque international de Paris, Collège de France, 23-25 mai 2013
AMATO E., CORCELLA A., LAURITZEN D. (eds)
