Cat 3406E ATAAC EngineThe six-cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled engine is built forpower, reliability, low maintenance, excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

Powerful performance. The 3406E six cylinder electronic engine delivers,at the rated speed of 2000 rpm, flywheelpower of 232 kW (311 hp), and meetsthe European Union emissionregulations. This innovative engineprovides excellent fuel economy anddurability which can significantlyreduce operating costs.

Electronic Unit Injector (EUI). The Electronic Unit Injector is a high-pressure, direct injection fuel systemthat is virtually adjustment-free. It electronically monitors operatorand sensor inputs to optimize engineperformance.

Advanced fuel system. The advancedDiesel Engine Module (ADEM III) fuel system is a Caterpillar exclusiveelectronic control module whichprovides improved engine response,performance, fuel efficiency, trouble-shooting, diagnostics, and reducedemissions. The ADEM III electronicengine control improves altitudecapability to 3600 meters withoutderation and allows integration with the electronic transmission control formaximum power train efficiency.

Turbocharged and Air-to-air aftercooled.Turbocharger packs more dense air into the cylinders for more completecombustion and lower emissionsimproving performance and engineefficiency. These benefits are especiallyuseful at high altitudes. Air-to-airaftercooler reduces smoke and emissionsby providing a cooler inlet air for moreefficient combustion. This also extendsthe life of the piston rings and bore.

Cooling system. It features an electro-nically controlled continuously variableon-demand fan. Fan speed is determinedby engine coolant, transmission oil,hydraulic oil, and inlet manifoldtemperatures. Cooler operatingconditions mean lower average fanspeeds resulting in reduced fuelconsumption, lower noise levels, and lessradiator plugging. The electronic enginecontrol continuously compensates for thisvarying fan load providing constant net horsepower for consistent powerregardless of operating conditions.Hydraulic oil cooler, air conditionercondenser, and rear grill are all hingedfor easier cleaning. Side panels allowaccess to both sides of all cores for easiercleaning.

Caterpillar engine oil. It is formulated to optimize engine life and performanceand is strongly recommended for use inCat diesel engines. The engine oil changeinterval is increased to 500 hours.

Factory remanufactured parts.A large choice of factory remanufacturedparts and dealer proposed repair optionsincrease machine availability and reduce total repair costs.

Transmission. The Caterpillarplanetary, power shift transmissionfeatures heavy duty components tohandle the toughest jobs. Electroniccontrols provide features to enhanceproductivity, durability andserviceability. Heavy duty transmission with

432 mm extreme service fourplanet drive in first gear and 345 mm heavy duty four planetdrives in 2-4 gears. The torqueconverter uses a high-capacityimpeller to handle the enginesincreased power.

The flywheel interface uses a longspline oil dam, and the pump driveand output transfer use highcontact gear ratios to reduce soundlevels.

Perimeter-mounted, large diameterclutch packs control inertia forsmooth shifting and increasedcomponent life.

Electronic Autoshift transmissionincreases operator efficiencies andoptimizes machine performance. The operator can choose betweenmanual or autoshift modes. And,by using the left brake pedal, theoperator can engage the adjustableneutralizer, maintaining highengine rpm for full hydraulic flow.

Transmission neutralizer.It allows the operator to disengagethe transmission clutches, removingtorque from the drive train. With theneutralizer, high engine rpms aremaintained for full hydraulic flowand brake drive through is prevented.

Integrated Braking System.It integrates a downshifting andneutralizer logic into the left-hand brakepedal. This system translates intoincreased performance/productivity forthe operator thanks to the optimizedtransmission neutralizer, the automaticdownshifting and downhill retardingfeature.
