    ENGINE OIL

    SAE GRADE RATING INDICATES ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY

    An SAE visco sit y g r a d e is u se d t o sp e cif y t h e vis-

    cosity of engine oil. SAE 30 specifies a single viscos-

    it y en gi ne oil. E n gin e oil s a l so h a ve m ult iple

    viscosit ies. These ar e specified w ith a dual SAE vis-

    cosity grade which indicat es t he cold-to-hot tempera-ture viscosity range.

    S AE 30 = s in gle g r a d e e n g in e oi l.

    SAE 10W-30 = mult iple gra de engine oil.

    API QUALITY CLASSIFICATION

    The AP I Service G ra de specifies the type of perfor-

    mance the engine oil is intended to provide. The API

    Service G ra de specificat ions also a pply to energy con-

    serving engine oils.

    GEAR LUBRICANTS

    START A VEHICLE WHEN THE BATTERY FLUID ISBELOW THE TOP OF LEAD PLATES. DO NOTALLOW JUMPER CABLE CLAMPS TO TOUCHEACH OTHER WHEN CONNECTED TO A BOOSTER

    SOURCE. DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME NEAR BAT-TERY. REMOVE METALLIC JEWELRY WORN ONHANDS OR WRISTS TO AVOID INJURY BY ACCI-DENTAL ARCING OF BATTERY CURRENT. WHENUSING A HIGH OUTPUT BOOSTING DEVICE, DO

    NOT ALLOW BATTERY VOLTAGE TO EXCEED 16VOLTS. REFER TO INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDEDWITH DEVICE BEING USED.

    CAUTION: When using another vehicle as a

    booster, do not allow vehicles to touch. Electricalsystems can be damaged on either vehicle.

    TO JUMP START A DISABLED VEHICLE:

    (1) R a i s e h ood on d is a b le d v eh i cl e a n d v is u a l ly

    inspect engine compartment for:

    B at tery cable clamp condition, clean if n ecessary.

    Frozen battery. Yellow or bright color test indicator, if equipped.

    Low battery fluid level.

    Generator drive belt condition and tension.

    Fuel fumes or leakage, correct if necessary.

    CAUTION: If the cause of starting problem on dis-abled vehicle is severe, damage to booster vehiclecharging system can result.

    (2) Wh en u si ng a n ot h er v eh icl e a s a b oos t er

    source, turn off all accessories, place gear selector in

    park or neutral, set park brake and operate engine at

    1200 r pm.

    (3) On disa bled vehicle, place gear selector in pa rk

    or n e u t r a l a n d se t p a r k br a k e . Tu r n of f a l l a cce sso-

    ries.

    (4) Connect jumper cables to booster battery. RED

    clamp to posit ive terminal (+ ) . BLACK clamp to neg-

    ative terminal (-). DO NOT allow clamps at opposite

    en d of ca b l es t o t ou ch , el ect r i ca l a r c w i ll r es u lt .

    Review all warnings in this procedure.

    (5) On disabled vehicle, connect RED jumper cable

    cl a m p t o p os it iv e (+ ) t er m in a l . C on n ect B L AC K

    ju m p er ca ble cla m p t o e n g in e g r ou n d a s close t o t h e

    ground cable at taching point as possible (Fig. 1).

    CAUTION: Do not crank starter motor on disabled

    vehicle for more than 15 seconds, starter will over-heat and could fail.

    (6) Allow ba t t e r y in d isa bled veh icle t o ch a r g e t o

    at least 12.4 volts (75% charge) before a t tempting to

    st a r t e n g in e . I f e n g in e d o e s n o t st a r t w it h in 15 se c-

    o n d s, s t o p cr a n k in g e n g in e a n d a l lo w st a r t e r t o co o l

    (15 min.), before cranking again.

    TOWING RECOMM ENDATIONSA vehicle equipped with SAE approved sling-type

    t o w in g e q u ipm e n t or a w h e el-l if t t o w in g d e vice ca n

    be u sed t o t o w a l l DAKOTA vehicles. When towing a4WD vehicle, use tow dollies under the opposite end

    of t h e veh icle. A ve h icle w it h a f la t -bed d e vice ca n

    also be used to transport a disabled vehicle (Fig. 2).

    connection when using the sling-type, front-end tow-

    ing method.

    SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

    NOTE: The following safety precautions must beobserved when towing a vehicle.

    Secure loose and protruding parts.

    GROUND CLEARANCE

    CAUTION: If vehicle is towed with wheelsremoved, install lug nuts to retain brake drums.

    A towed vehicle should be ra ised until lif ted wheels

    a r e a m in im u m 100 m m (4 in ) f r o m t h e g r o u n d . B e

    su r e t h e r e is a d e q u a t e g r o u n d cle a r a n ce a t t h e o p po-

    site end of the vehicle, especially when towing over

    rough terrain or steep rises in the road. If necessary,

    remove the wheels from the lifted end of the vehicle

    a n d low er t h e v eh icle cl os er t o t h e g rou nd , t o

    increase the ground clearance at the opposite end of

    t h e ve h icle. I n st a l l lu g n u t s on w h e e l a t t a ch in g st u d s

    t o r e t a in br a k e d r u m s.

    RAMP ANGLE

    If a vehicle with flat-bed towing equipment is used,

    t h e a p pr oa ch r a m p a n g le s h ou ld n ot exceed 15

    degrees.

    TOWING WHEN KEYS ARE NOT AVAILABLE

    When the vehicle is locked and keys are not avail-

    able, use a f lat bed ha uler. A Wheel-lift or Sling-typedevice can be used on 4WD vehicles provided all thewheels are lifted off the ground using tow dol-lies.

    HOISTING RECOMM ENDATIONSRefer to th e Owners Man ual for emergency vehicle

    lifting procedures.

    FLOOR JACK

    When properly positioned, a floor jack can be used

    to lift a Da kota vehicle (Fig. 3). S upport t he vehicle

    i n t h e r a i s e d p o s i t i o n w i t h j a c k s t a n d s a t t h e f r o n t

    a n d r ea r en d s o f t h e f r a m e r a i ls .

    CAUTION: Do not attempt to lift a vehicle with afloor jack positioned under:

    An axle tube.

    A body side sill. A steering linkage component. A drive shaft. The engine or transmission oil pan.

    The fuel tank. A front suspension arm.

    HOIST

    A vehicle can be lifted with:

    A single-post, frame-contact hoist.

    A twin-post , chassis hoist .

    A ramp-type, drive-on hoist.

    NOTE: When a frame-contact type hoist is used,verify that the lifting pads are positioned properly(Fig. 3).

    WARNING: THE HOISTING AND JACK LIFTINGPOINTS PROVIDED ARE FOR A COMPLETE VEHI-CLE. WHEN A CHASSIS OR DRIVETRAIN COMPO-

    NENT IS REMOVED FROM A VEHICLE, THECENTER OF GRAVITY IS ALTERED MAKING SOMEHOISTING CONDITIONS UNSTABLE. PROPERLYSUPPORT OR SECURE VEHICLE TO HOISTINGDEVICE WHEN THESE CONDITIONS EXIST.

    TWO-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLE TOWINGChrysler C orporation recommends t ha t a vehicle be

    towed with the rear end lifted, whenever possible.

    TOWING-REAR END LIFTED

    CAUTION: Do not use steering column lock to

    secure steering wheel during towing operation.

    (4) Turn the ignit ion sw itch to t he OFF posit ion to

    unlock the steering wheel.(5) S e cu r e st e e r in g w h e e l in st r a ig h t a h e a d p osi-

    tion with a clamp device designed for towing.

    (6) Ve r if y t h a t s t e er in g com p on e n t s a r e in g ood

    condition.

    (7) Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL.

    TOWING-FRONT END LIFTED

    If a tw o-wheel-drive vehicle cannot be towed w ith

    t h e r e a r w h e e ls l i f t e d , i t ca n be t o w e d w it h t h e f r o n twheels lifted.

    CAUTION: Many vehicles are equipped with airdams, spoilers, and/or ground effect panels. To

    avoid component damage, a wheel-lift towing vehi-cle or a flat-bed hauling vehicle is recommended.

    CAUTION: Use tow chains with J-hooks for con-

    necting to the disabled vehicles frame crossmem-ber. Never use T-hooks.

    (3) At t a ch t h e J -h ook s t o t h e d isa bled veh icle a t

    the frame front crossmember.

    (4) Attach the safety chains to the disabled vehicle

    a t t h e f r a m e r a i ls .

    (5) Turn the ignit ion sw itch to t he OFF posit ion to

    unlock the steering wheel.
