PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

President’s Message
As a first time President I’d like to welcome you all to the 99th Northampton District Agricultural Society show.
I’d like to also start by thanking our committee, who have worked very hard over the past months to deliver you all a show full of excitement and great times for the whole family.
Our committee has been lucky enough to gain a number of new members who have all helped inject new ideas into this year’s programme.
This year as a committee we wanted to ensure all families were able to experience what our show has to offer and once again children aged 17 years and under will receive free entry as they have always done, despite the Government funding for this being axed. This year we are bringing back some old favourites with our camp oven cooking competition and home brewing competition, as well as some new ones with a meat cutting demo, the wildlife park and a gardening Q and A session.
You can also explore the wonderful exhibits which are always a part of the Northampton Show and grab a front seat for the dazzling fireworks display!
A very big thank you to all our wonderful generous sponsors and best of luck to the competitors in all the events and sections associated with the show.
I look forward to seeing everyone and having a fantastic time at this year’s 99th annual show.
Leigh Nairn President

COULD YOUR COMMUNITY DO WITH A HELPING HAND?
Previously we’ve, we helped the people of Perenjori, Wellstead and North Midland put on their agricultural
shows. And gave Narembeen a big hand with its new Grain Discovery Centre. We also helped the Great
Southern with its Bloom Festival, supported the business women of Bruce Rock and gave Three Springs
a donation towards their new child care centre. If you are a member of a group or organisation that is
conducting an event or project that will benefit and provide value to Western Australian grain growers and their
communities, you may like to apply for support from the CBH Group. Applications are invited three times a year
in the months of January, May and September. The Grass Roots Fund is available for funding requests of up
to $5,000. If you have an event, organisation or project that matters to your community, then we’d love to hear
from you. Guidelines and an application form for our Grass Roots Fund are available at www.cbh.com.au
Every year, the CBH Group supports WA’s grain growing communities through a range of different community projects.

Rural Ambassador AwardZoe Nairn
How extraordinary life is. Growing up on Terara Farm in Binnu, I would drive past Mongeragarry Road just past Peter Harris’ place on the school bus or on many of the trips to and from the farm and think to myself, “what is down that road?” I would never have imagined 2 decades later I would find myself driving down Mongeragarry Rd on a regular basis to get myself from Terara to my new found home at Biara Farm, Northampton.I think about my childhood on Terara farm most days. I am a lawyer now, working in Geraldton, and I practice in family and criminal law. I find myself comparing my childhood to the unfortunate childhood of many of the people I represent, and can’t help but be extremely grateful that I grew up in the country with a loving family and community. I remember many things about those 12 years of my childhood on Terara. Many of them involve being the youngest of the pack and the only girl amongst two older brothers and three older cousins. I was the subject of many a joke but that’s ok. That’s where I learned to stick up for myself.I remember being covered in filth most days from building cubbies or flying foxes in the paddocks near the house. I remember school holidays at Horrocks. I remember working in the shearing shed with dad being his “roustabout” and feeling very proud that as his only daughter, I could help in some way. I remember racking up a collection of “lost lambs” and dad entering them in the local show and coming home with a new picnic blanket or a slow cooker, and thinking “maybe I’ll be a farmer when I grow up”. Perhaps the fondest memories are those times driving around the paddocks with dad or pop, just checking the sheep, the troughs and the crops. This is something Glenn and I now do each weekend at Biara and each time, back comes a flurry of memories from Terara. I am very lucky. My years growing up at Terara are where I learned not to be afraid of hard work and developed my fondness for animals, which perhaps led to my fondness later on in life, of defending those who cannot defend themselves. That’s the country for you. Like so many of my country friends, it has enriched my life. I don’t know what values I would have today if I wasn’t a country girl. Like most country kids, I had to be taken away from that glorious life and sent to boarding school. I attended Iona Presentation College for Year 8 but missing the coun-try and my best friends, I attended Nagle Catholic College from Years 9-12. I enjoyed high school in Geraldton. All of my closest friends went there. Completing a bachelor of legal studies and criminology in 2006, I started looking for a job. Where was I going to find an opportunity in the country to utilise that degree? Fortunately for me and so many other country kids, my parents never let me miss

out on anything growing up. My best friend, Chantelle Harris and I were driven into Geraldton for tennis lessons and into Northampton for gymnastics on a weekly basis. It was playing tennis that I met one of the most influential men of my life. He was my mentor for the better part of a decade. He had a fondness for country people. I remember him telling me when I first started that he liked employing country people because we worked hard and had common sense. He, and the childhood my parents bestowed upon me, was the reason I had the opportunity to become not just a lawyer, but a country lawyer. It is these ties in the community and the love and support from our families that allow us to grow. I am not yet a mother myself but I now know that the best thing a parent can give a child is opportunity and my parents gave me a boundless supply of that by raising me in the country.12 months have now passed since I moved out to Biara with Glenn and the rest of the Hasleby clan. A series of hard events had to take place for that to happen but we are pretty good at facing adversity us country folk, especially together. I am now a part of the Northampton Ag Society, Netball Association, and Women’s Squash Club and a “book/wine” club. I’ve rekindled many friendships that were born in the country and made many more. I am at home here in the country and the sense of community we have here in Northampton has allowed me to start life all over again, back where it all started.
