Reliability and DurabilityThe Cat 938H – Built Strong and Tough – Tested And Proven – Ready To Work

Engine. The Cat C6.6 is a 6.6 literdisplacement, in-line six cylinderengine. The C6.6 utilizes ACERTTechnology, a series of Caterpillarengineered innovations that providesadvanced electronic control, precise fueldelivery and refined air management,resulting in outstanding performanceand lower emissions.The C6.6 with ACERT Technologyoffers a compact design with big, heavyduty engine features for outstandingdurability, reliability and performance.The C6.6 incorporates a new cross flowcylinder head design, 4 valve head andan ADEM A4 electronic controller.The C6.6 also features a provencylinder block, pistons and crankshaft.

Electronic Control ADEM A4.The Advanced Diesel EngineManagement – Electronic ControlModule consistently monitors importantengine conditions and functions. It usessensors throughout the engine toregulate fuel delivery and all otherengine systems that require input tomanage load and performance. TheADEM A4 controller is the brainbehind engine responsiveness, self-diagnosis, controlling emissions andfuel economy.

Air Management. Air managementis a key concept in optimizing engineperformance and controlling emissions.Engines must breathe clean cool air inorder to perform. To aid this, the C6.6uses a turbocharger fitted with a smartwaste gate to give precise and reliablecontrol of the boost pressure. A newcross-flow design in the cylinder headfacilitates air movement, while tightertolerances between the piston andcylinder wall reduce blow by gases.

Fuel System. Through multiple injectionfuel delivery, fuel is introduced inthe combustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustion cyclewhile reducing engine sound levels

Fuel Pump. The C6.6 uses an oil-lubricated high-pressure fuel pumpto feed a common fuel rail. By usingan oil-lubricated fuel pump, the C6.6has been designed to be more tolerantof alternative fuels.

Structures. The articulated frame designof the 938H features a durable plateengine frame and two plate loader towerthat is robotically welded. Roboticwelding creates frame joints with deepplate penetration welds and excellentfusion for maximum strength anddurability.

Linkage. The 938H linkage is a single-tilt Z-bar design. Z-bar linkagegenerates excellent breakout force andgood rack back angle for better bucketloading and load retention.Lift arms are solid steel, providingsuperior strength with an excellent frontend viewing area. The proven designoffers excellent dump clearanceand reach.

Counterweight. The two-piece counter-weight is integrated into the 938H designand provides added protection for thelights by incorporating them into the top ofthe structure.

Caterpillar Designed Components.Components used to build Cat WheelLoaders are designed and manufactured toCaterpillar quality standards to ensuremaximum performance even in extremeoperating conditions.Engine electronic control modules andsensors are completely sealed againstmoisture and dust. Deutsch connectors andelectrical wire braiding ensure thatelectrical connections resist corrosion andpremature wear.Hoses are engineered and manufacturedfor high resistance to abrasion, excellentflexibility and easy installation andreplacement.Caterpillar® couplings use o-ring face sealsto provide positive sealing for durableleak-free connections.Heavy duty components reduce the risk ofleaks, corrosion and premature wear,increasing uptime and helping to protectthe environment.

Powershift Transmission. The 938Hcontinues to use powershift transmissiontechnology proven on previous series.The countershaft powershifttransmission features heavy-dutycomponents to handle the toughestapplications. Built-in electronic controlsenhance productivity and durability.

Controlled Throttle Shifting. ControlThrottle Shifting regulates engine speedduring high-energy directional and gearchanges for smoother shifting and longercomponent life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) system modulates clutchesindividually to improve shift quality,component life and operator comfort.Adjustment is simplified with allsolenoid valves externally mountedon top of the transmission housing.

Axles. The 938H axles are designed byCaterpillar for durability in all operatingconditions. The front axle is rigidlymounted to the frame to support theweight of the wheel loader and withstandinternal torque loads as well as externalforces encountered throughout operation.The rear axle is designed to allow ± 12°oscillation. All four wheels remain onthe ground over uneven terrain providingexcellent stability and traction.

Load-Sensing Hydraulics.The 938H features a Load-Sensinghydraulic system that supplies flowand pressure for the implementsonly upon demand, and only in theamounts necessary to perform the needed work thus providing amore efficient loader.With the new S3PC PriorityProportional PressureCompensation Valve, implementcontrol is improved over the pre-vious system – raise/lower and rackback/dump can be operatedsimultaneously.Operators will notice enhancedease of operation, more rimpull into the pile and a 16% increase in lift force.

Constant Net Horsepower. On manycompetitive machines, gross horse-power is constant, meaning that netengine power available for actual workwill vary based on demands made from parasitic sources, such as airconditioning or cooling fans.The Cat C6.6 engine is electronicallyconfigured to provide constant nethorsepower at full parasitic loadenhancing productivity and improvingfuel efficiency.

Countershaft Powershift Transmission.The electronic countershaft powershift trans-mission with automatic shift capability isdesigned and built by Caterpillar. The veryresponsive, full-power speed and directionalchanges provide excellent cycle times andproductivity.

Fuel Economy Mode. Match transmissionshifting patterns to machine applicationrequirements. The Fuel Economy Mode(within Messenger) provides operators withthe ability to choose between three differentshift modes in order to maximize shift qualityand fuel efficiency.

Variable Shift Control. Match transmissionshifting patterns to machine applicationrequirements. Variable Shift Control (VSC)improves shift quality and fuel efficiency in certain applications by allowing the trans-mission to upshift at lower engine RPMs.

1 Standard Universal Buckets.These flat floor buckets, equippedwith various Ground Engaging Tools,provide easier pile penetration, betterfill factors and faster loading cycles;they are offered in a wide range ofcapacities and are recommended in allapplications, except fulltime bank orrock loading. All buckets featureintegral spill plates to prevent rearspillage, as well as, bottom and sidewear plates for greater durability.

2 General Excavation Buckets.Built to handle the toughestconditions, these slope floor bucketsfeature a well proven, shell-tineconstruction design that resiststwisting and distortion and areexcellent for bank and excavationapplications. Bucket hinges are part ofa structure that extends under the bucket shell to the cutting edge,

forming box sections. These structuresact as protection against impact andtwisting forces. All buckets haveintegral spill plates that prevent rearspillage, keeping material away fromthe linkage. Hardened weld-on rearwear plates protect the bottom of thebucket for greater durability. Bucketside plates are also reinforced in theirlower portion with additional wearplates for longer life.

3 Universal Buckets with Back Grading Edge.In this configuration, an additional full-width box-section profile with a wearedge is welded at the back of the bucketfloor. The bucket base edge and theadditional rear edge are at the samelevel, providing better grading capabilities.This bucket can be fitted with weldedflush mounted adapters and tips stillallowing excellent grading capability.

4 Quick Couplers. They provideunmatched versatility and allow oneoperator with one machine to performa wide variety of tasks, resulting ingreater machine performance and costefficiency. Use the dedicated quickcoupler actuation circuit (optional) toactivate the quick coupler and changemechanical tools without leaving thecab. Having a dedicated circuit alsoleaves the third valve solely to actuatehydraulic tools without the need fordiverter valves.

Seat. The durable seat adjusts 6-waysto accommodate all sized operators.The seat features an automotive stylelumbar support for maximum comfort.The Cat C-500 Series Comfort air-suspension seat is optional as is aheated backrest and seat cushion.

Visibility. The 938H offers excellentvisibility to the front and rear of themachine. Distortion-free flat glassstretches to the floor of the cab forexcellent visibility to the bucket.Wet-arm wipers on both front and backkeep the windows clean in anycondition.

Rear Vision Camera. An optional rearvision camera is available to clearlymonitor movement behind the wheelloader.

Lighting Packages. In addition to thestandard roading lights, optional lightingpackages are available for low-lightapplications. Optional auxiliary halogenor High Intensity Discharge (HID) cablights provide exceptional lighting fornight work. A rotating beacon isavailable as a safety feature.

Implement Control Pod. The newlyrestyled implement pod providessuperior comfort through the full lengthadjustable armrest. Standard trans-mission F-N-R switch allows operatorsto keep their hand on the implementcontrol levers while making directionalshifts. An optional joystick withintegrated F-N-R switch is available and replaces the lift and tilt levers.

Steering. Caterpillar’s low effort Load-Sensing steering directs power throughthe steering system only when needed.The new hand metering unit andpriority valve provide operators withfull steering and multi-functioncapability at low engine RPM’s. The combined steering column andinstrument panel tilt for maximumoperator comfort.

Controls. Key machine controls areconveniently located within arms reachand allow better efficiency whileminimizing operator fatigue.A variety of machine controls are alsocontained within the Messenger display.By accessing various menus, anoperator can tailor the machine to fitoperating style and application. For multi-shift operations, personalizedsettings for each operator can beestablished and stored for maximumuptime and comfort.

Entry and Exit. A ladder with aggressivetread pattern keeps debris build-up to aminimum. The ladder is at a 5° forwardincline for easy entry and exit.The main cab door opens a full 180°and latches in place to allow safenavigation to the rear of the machine.The right side door opens 10°, orcompletely for secondary exit simplyby pulling a pin. A full-length ladderon the right side facilitates safe exitif needed.

S•O•SSM Services. Keep minor repairs frombecoming major ones and avoid completefailures. By regularly taking samples fromthe ports provided, your Cat dealer trackswear of components and parts, oilperformance, and oil condition and uses thatdata to predict wear-related problems beforethey happen. Often a simple adjustment orreplacement of a part, based on S•O•Sreports, can keep a small problem fromturning into a major repair – allowing yourmachine to be running when you need it,not waiting in the shop for service. Sampling valves on the 938H allow quickaccess to engine, transmission and hydraulicoils for S•O•S analysis. Oil change intervalsand other services can be optimizedaccording to your work schedule, reducingdowntime and managing expenses.

Brake Wear Indicators. Axles are equippedwith standard brake wear indicators,allowing a technician to easily determinewhen it is necessary to service the brakes.

Sight Gauges. Well-protected, yet easilyvisible sight gauges for the transmission,hydraulic oil and radiator coolant alloweasy daily checks while reducing the risk ofcontaminants entering the systems.

Fuel Priming Pump. An electrical fuelpriming pump is located between the fueltank and the combined water separator/primary fuel filter. The electric primingpump eliminates the need to pre-fill ormanually prime filters after a change, thusreducing contamination and improvinginjector life.

Cat Product Link. With Product Linkcustomers and dealers can remotely obtainmachine diagnostics. The system providesupdates on service meter hours, machinehealth and equipment location.

Ground Level Grease Points. Greasefittings are grouped on the right side ofthe machine in two convenient locationsthus facilitating easy lubrication of vitalcomponents throughout the machine.

Cooling System. Cooling system accessfor clean-out and maintenanceis outstanding. The perforated andcorrugated grill minimizes debris build-up and swings out for easy cleaningand access to the cooling cores.The full-width air conditioningcondenser and oil cooler cores swingout 45° to allow easy cleaning of therear radiator face. An access panellocated on the right side of the radiatorsupport structure provides access to thefront face of the radiator and ATAACcores for easy cleaning.
