A new medical clinic has opened its doors to offer much-needed bilingual medical services

to women battling breast cancer on the Southside.

There are over 11,000 women living on the Southside and of these women, 1,395 will statistical-ly be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, according to

the Realtor.com, BreastCancer.org and U.S. Census Bureau.

Unfortunately, these women do not have proximate access to the same life-saving lumpectomy, mastectomy and breast lesion re-moval surgeries and often receive

sub-par or unspecialized care. In an effort to help the women

diagnosed in this area of San An-tonio, breast cancer surgeon Dr. Maria Palafox, one of only four fe-male surgeons in San Antonio who specialize predominantly in breast

cancer surgery, recently opened the South Texas Breast Surgery clinic in Mission Trail.

The Texas Diaper Bank launched its first-ever “One Million Diapers for Babies” campaign to raise diapers for nearly 40,000 babies of low-income families in Bexar County and surrounding areas. The campaign will run throughout the month of October, which has been declared “Diaper Need Awareness Month” by the city of San Antonio.

Every year, more than 700,000 diapers are provided by the Texas Diaper Bank to over 9,000 babies in Bexar County, but its diaper supply is not enough to meet the growing demand for this basic necessity.

With the community’s support to raise one million diapers during the campaign, the Texas Diaper Bank will be able to increase the number of babies served in not only Bexar County, but also Bandera, Comal, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Travis and Uvalde counties this year.

“Diapers are a costly expense for a family with a baby, and oftentimes low-income families are forced to choose between this basic need and others such as food

and housing,” said Jorge Medina, executive director of Texas Diaper Bank. “A clean diaper impacts the well-being, growth and develop-ment of a baby, so contributors to this campaign and our mission are effectively helping to give babies a healthy start in life.”

The campaign is supported by Bank of America, a long-time part-ner of the Texas Diaper Bank, who will help kick off the campaign with 62,500 diapers. In 2012, the Texas Diaper Bank was honored as a Bank of America Neighborhood Builder for its efforts to tackle pov-erty in San Antonio. The Neighbor-hood Builders program annually provides one San Antonio-area nonprofit with $200,000 in unre-stricted funding and leadership development to help the organiza-tion build a stronger infrastructure.

A new and improved bridge on the city’s West Side is all set to enhance pedestrian safety and encourage business growth.

City officials joined District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales on Monday morning to celebrate the end of construction on the South Laredo Street Bridge with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The original bridge, built in 1962, was demolished six months ago and replaced with a new culvert crossing and reinforced concrete pipes to handle the weight of large trucks that pass through the area.

Assistant Director of Transpor-tation and Capital Improvements Razi Hosseini, who oversaw the project design and conception, said the original bridge had a load

limitation.“What that means is heavy

trucks couldn’t cross over and it was causing an inconvenience for the people driving because they had to find alternative routes to travel,” Hosseini told La Prensa. “With the brand new pipes, there are no load limitations anymore.”

Councilwoman Gonzales is hopeful the project will signify a positive economic impact.

“This is a very industrial part of the district so we want as much business here as possible,” Gon-zales said. “Stabilizing this bridge makes it easy to continue with that work and we are looking forward to continue investment in this area.”

As a part of the project, the pave-ment was also improved with six foot sidewalks along both sides of the bridge and storm drain inlets were installed.

Gonzales emphasized that the six foot sidewalks will enhance

accessibility and pedestrian safety.“We know that many of the

people that are employed in this area also live in this area, and so having sidewalks for them to walk safely if they are taking the bus is a big priority,” Gonzales said.

The project broke ground on March 23, 2015 and was funded with more than $533,000 from the voter approved 2012 – 2017 Bond Program.

“Our goal is to deliver projects on time and within budget and I’m happy to say we accomplished that with the S. Laredo Bridge,” said Mike Frisbie, City Engineer and Director of Transportation & Capital Improvements, in a state-ment released by the City.

The project was managed by Transportation and Capital Im-provements, Jacobs Engineering Group was the consultant and Capital Excavation constructed the project.

San Antonio’s Center City Devel-opment & Operations Department, Department for Culture & Creative Development and the San Antonio Parks Foundation announces the debut of “Opera in the Park,” featur-ing Opera Piccola of San Antonio, on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Travis Park.

Performances will begin at 3 p.m. with pre-entertainment by The Playhouse, Trilogy Dance Center, Woodlawn Theatre, Woodlawn Academy for Performing Arts and the Magik Theatre. A variety of family-friendly games and activi-ties will be available throughout the day with an artisan market and food trucks on-site.

Opera Piccola of San Anto-nio will take the stage from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The local company was founded in 2012 by Mark A. Richter with the aim of building a professional chamber opera for San Antonio. The company has been

successful in securing professional opera singers from around the world to produce a number of high-quality, English operas.

“Center City Development & Operations is working diligently to bring quality programming to Travis Park,” said Lori Houston, Assistant City Manager. “There is no better way to accomplish this than through the performing arts.”

Local theater and dance produc-tions scheduled earlier in the day will be kid-friendly, creating an ideal transition to the mainstage Opera performance and the perfect introduction to Opera for children and young adults. UHS revs up pediatric trauma prevention education

With childhood comes the very real risk of injury. Thanks to Uni-versity Health System (UHS), they are educating the masses to avoid it

all together.The three-pronged approach

includes: the verification by the American College of Surgeons that University Hospital has a top tier pediatric trauma center, community partnerships to educate the public on everything from car seat safety

to burn and fall prevention and ef-forts with Safe Kids San Antonio coalition.

“We’ve all been kids before and they sometimes get injured. We want to prevent the numerous ways in which they can get hurt and that can even prevent them from having to come to University Hospital,” said George Hernandez, president and CEO of University Health System.

This is not the first foray by UHS to teach new parents the proper use of car seats or potential risks from burns and falls. But this marks a new chapter in reaching out to teens to discuss the dangers of distracted driving.

These initiatives also underscore the message that happy and healthy kids should never require emergency care.

“We’re committed to the kids program, particularly the prevention side of it…We have always wanted to have a strong trauma program to save those who are injured an a strong prevention program to

prevent trauma in the first place,” Hernandez continued.

Among the many reasons Uni-versity Hospital has risen to the top of emergency care in San Antonio is a host of other community part-nerships. With the support of local leaders, both funding and support for the UHS mission has been fruitful.

“The city and county has been very receptive to the needs of the mission of University Health Sys-tem. In recent years, we’ve expanded our children’s services and hope to do more in the future,” Hernandez explained.

Yet when it comes time to re-ceive care, University Hospital staff knows all too well there is a cyclical pattern when the emergency room is full.

“We want to educate the commu-nity and tell them that trauma is a dis-ease process. Like all other diseases, it is preventable with a robust pediat-ric trauma prevention program,” said Dr. Lillian Liao, trauma surgeon and Pediatric Trauma medical director at

University Hospital.Education is not limited to chil-

dren alone. The comprehensive nature of the initiative can be applied to kids from the time they are in a care seat to their first driver’s seat.

That wide range of health issues can be tough to tackle, but according to Dr. Liao, it is all part of the job.

“For the younger children, we talk about car seat safety. All the way to teenagers, we talk about distracted driving. Somewhere in between we have burn and fall prevention [as well],” Dr. Liao continued.

Being verified by the American College of Surgeons is further proof for the UHS staff that meeting the needs for the seventh largest city is no small task. But it is one that requires constant attention.

Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River, presented by H-E-B, will unite more than 1,300 cyclists and hundreds of volunteers and sup-porters on Oct. 3-4.

The 26th annual ride benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a 159-mile journey from San Antonio to New Braunfels with a festive finish at the Comal County Fairgrounds. The Society aims to earn nearly $1.4 million this year to support cutting-edge research and life-changing pro-grams and services for people living with MS.

Established in 1980, the National MS Society’s Bike MS program is the largest organized cycling series in the country with nearly 100 Bike MS rides offered nationwide in 2015.

Last year, cyclists raised nearly $83 million to support MS re-search and programs delivered by the Society’s 50-state network of chapters. Bike MS has raised over $1 billion since its inception. For cyclists and all those seeking a per-sonal challenge and a world free of MS, Bike MS is the premier fund-raising cycling series in the nation.

“Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River brings together friends, families and coworkers to conquer

a personal challenge and share an unforgettable experience all while making an impact for those living with MS,” says Cynthia Rodriguez, development director for the Na-tional MS Society in San Antonio. “The challenge and camaraderie created by Bike MS makes it a one of a kind experience for each par-ticipant as we pedal closer toward a world free of MS.”

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River 2015 will start at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex and end at Comal County Fair Grounds. Cyclists have the option of riding a 70-mile or 100-mile route on Day 1 through the scenic countryside of South Texas.

Participants can choose from vari-ous routes based on desired level of difficulty. The 2015 registration fee is $50 and is available online. All registered cyclists are required to meet the minimum fundraising pledge of $250, due prior to pick-ing up their rider packets.

Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River 2015 is a bike ride for all levels. All riders in good financial standing with the Society aged 12 and up can ride (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). Riders under 18 must have their waiver signed by a notary. Notaries will be at all packet pick-ups and Expo.

There will be rest stops every 10-to-12 miles each day and ve-hicles equipped with first aid and mechanical support will be on the route at all times. Additionally, the National MS Society depends on committed volunteers to ensure Bike MS is an enjoyable and well-managed event. ing in a small town and being Hispanic, there was always some type of frustration over access to specialized care, so I knew early on that I wanted to create some type of medical service for females in rural areas,” said Dr. Palafox.

After being one of the few females from El Paso to ever be accepted into The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Palafox chose to come to San Antonio and pursue her medical degree and fellowship at the UT Health Science Center.

Dr. Palafox loves the Southside and South Texas. “This is my home. My husband grew up here and I have lived here for many years. When I saw that there were only four female breast cancer surgeons in a South Texas market with 1.9 million females, and none on the Southside, I knew what I needed to do,” she said.

At the clinic, Dr. Palafox will be the main doctor who will treat all general surgery patients (both male and female), but will also special-ize in treating women’s conditions and on breast cancer patients. She mentioned that it is imperative that women look out for possible warn-ing signs of the disease and to not be afraid to see their doctor.

“Breast cancer can be so fright-ening for someone to have to deal with. No one should have to wait or travel a long distance to receive treatment if they don’t have to. There are also a whole bunch of rural communities just south of San Antonio with the same needs; a clinic on the Southside is so much easier for them to access,” explained Dr. Palafox about her new clinic.

Dr. Palafox sees patients for a variety of diseases or conditions of the breast, especially those who have already been diagnosed with breast cancer. “Many of these women have sought us out because they just feel more comfortable with a female surgeon,” discussed Dr. Palafox about patients who seek her medical advice. “But pa-tients don’t have to already have a

breast cancer diagnosis to call us, and that’s a message that we re-ally want to get out,” Dr. Palafox added.

The new facility hopes to offer a new positive change in the commu-nity and motivate more patients at risk to take action on their health. Dr. Palafox encourages patients to come forward and ask questions if they see that feel that something is wrong.

“I was so proud of one patient who came to see me. This woman knew something was wrong and she just kept saying, ‘It feels full, it feels full right here.’ She had gotten a mammogram and was told it was negative,” said Dr. Palafox.

The clinic was able to perform a biopsy on that area and found that she had lobular cancer, which is not only a rare cancer type, but a cancer type that doesn’t show up on a traditional mammogram or ultrasound. “This woman’s persistence and willingness to go somewhere else saved her life. So many women don’t think they are allowed to come straight to a sur-geon, but that’s just not the case,” explained Dr. Palafox.

Dr. Palafox hopes to make a difference in the community by having a positive relationship with her patients and not letting the small things go. She hopes to add more specialized resources to offer a higher quality of care for her patients in the future.

“I would like to see a dedicated breast center on the Southside where a patient can see all of their specialists in one location – from surgery and imaging to chemother-apy and radiation – even survivor-ship and other support resources,” Dr. Palafox said and added, “Like a mini MD Anderson right here. That’s what we need.”

El capitán y alero estelar Tim Duncan, en el Día de los Medios, dijo sentirse contento y listo para comenzar a trabajar duro en el campo de entrenamiento que ayer martes 29 de septiembre se abrió en el gimnasio de los Spurs.

Duncan, de 39 años de edad, es-tará jugando su temporada número 19 vistiendo la casaca Silver & Black de la franquicia a la que ha tenido la fortuna de guiar a la cap-tura de cinco títulos en la National Basketball Association (NBA).

“La motivación que tenemos todos los jugadores es la misma de cada temporada. Nos ayuda a ganar partidos y que nos ubiquen por el sendero de clasificarnos para pelear por el escaño de la gran final (otro campeonato). Pop (refirién-dose a su entrenador en jefe Gregg Popovich) hará muchas decisiones para decidir nuestro plan de juego. Aquí en los Spurs no existe ‘quar-terback’, todos hacemos nuestro respectivo trabajo”, así se expresó Duncan, en su turno frente a los representantes de los medio que cubren la fuente.

Por su parte el entrenador en jefe Gregg Popovich, en su saludo a los medios, dio pormenores sobre las actividades que se harán para que el equipo esté fogueándose du-rante el campo de entrenamiento,

para entrar con el pie derecho al primero de los seis partidos que se jugarán en la pretemporada que comenzará el jueves 8 de octubre en Sacramento (Kings).

“Hoy comienza la temporada en la NBA, de nueva cuenta les doy la bienvenida (a los medios informativos) a nuestra sede donde vamos a probar cómo nuestra gente (refiriéndose a los jugadores convocados al campo de entre-namiento) estará respondiendo durante el campo de preparación. Todo se ve en buena situación por lo que no veo que se tendrá proble-ma para tener un buen arranque en pretemporada y para cuando comiencen los partidos del rol regular. (En broma Popovich dijo) a Tony Parker, el primer día del campo de entrenamiento, lo voy a poner a que haga doble sesión. En cuanto a LaMarcus Aldridge y el resto de jugadores, ellos harán su juego. Todos por igual entrenarán como lo marca nuestro plan. Al-dridge será otro Spur como todos”, enfatizó el estratega Popovich, que estará dirigiendo a los Spurs en su campaña número 20, lapso en el que ha celebrado la captura de cinco campeonatos en la NBA.

The UTSA Roadrunners hosted the Colorado State Rams in a close match-up this past Saturday in front of 24,705 roaring fans.

Rams quarterback Jason Oden led all passers with 255 yards in the air and three touchdowns. Two of those three scores came in the third quarter.

Coming into Saturday’s game, UTSA planned on balancing their offense by running the ball more. They did just that when they ran for a total of 279 yards.

UTSA running back Jarveon Williams led all rushers in the evening when he rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Wil-liams also set two school records for most rushing yards as well as longest touchdown run in a single game at 85 yards.

Although the Roadrunners had an exceptional evening running the ball, the players were not pleased they did not capture a win.

“There’s definitely some posi-tives to take away from this game, but like you said, we lost,” Wil-liams said. “So obviously we didn’t do all the right things that we needed to do to get a win. We have to focus on those things and correct them in practice to take the next step forward.”

UTSA quarterback Blake Bo-genschutz added, “It doesn’t matter if we rush for 500 and we lose the ballgame. We have to win, what-ever it takes to win. If we have to score 100 or have to score five, it doesn’t matter. We need to win the ballgame, and that’s what we’re

looking to do.”At the start of the third quarter

Stevens led CSU down the field and scored in six plays for 60 yards in two minutes and eight seconds to gain the lead 23-17.

The next two possessions each team would go three and out. With a little under 10 minutes in third quarter, UTSA’s next possession seemed as it would be the one to regain the momentum as well as the lead.

Bogenschutz connected with wide receiver Bryce Taylor for 40 yards putting UTSA on CSU’s 25. However, next play would spell UTSA’s demise as Bogenschutz scrambled out of the pocket and threw a pass that was picked off by safety Deandre Elliot at the 15 and ran it to the 33.

CSU capitalized on UTSA’s turnover and facemask penalty when they scored in five plays, which lifted their lead, 30-17.

“It cost us the game probably,” Coker said. “That’s how it affected us. We had to hit a field goal there and also a touchdown. But saying that, it didn’t cost us the game. He (Bogenschutz) gave us a chance in the game to win, but I think the thing that you see on the intercep-tion, I think he threw the ball a little bit behind the receiver. If it had been outside, I think he’d have been fine.”

Williams 13 yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter cut CSU’s lead, 30-24.

There wasn’t much scoring in the fourth quarter, CSU settled for a field goal that lifted their lead, 33-24. Williams answered back with his historic 85 yard run for the Roadrunners the score would

be 33-31. After Williams’ record breaking run neither team would score as CSU held on to win, 33-31.

UTSA has fallen to a 0-4 record and will open up Conference USA play this Saturday against UTEP.

UTSA will have a couple of play-ers returning so Coker feels confi-dent about this Saturday’s matchup in West Texas.

“When you’ve played the people we’ve played, you’re going to get some guys nicked up a little bit,”

Coker said. “You look around the country [at other teams that have lost players]. Guys [in reserve] have got to be ready. Now that we’ve got some guys back, we feel a little better about our total prospects.”
