91.7 FM WMSE 2016-17 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT
91.7 FM WMSE is a non-profit, listener-supported radio service educationally licensed to the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
WMSE’s on-air staff is made up of dedicated community volunteers who specialize in the genre that is featured on their respective programs.
WMSE broadcasts from the downtown campus of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Funding for WMSE Radio is provided by the WMSE listening community through membership contributions and by area businesses
through program underwriting. 91.7 FM WMSE is financially independent of the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

MISSION
To entertain and educate members of our community by providing a wide selection of musical programming that they cannot readily hear elsewhere.
To enhance the image of and bring tangible value to MSOE, the station’s parent. To be an effective and creative public outlet for local artists who would otherwise receive little or no broadcast exposure in our community.
To support and enhance the Milwaukee community.
VISION
To energize, empower and reward all station listeners, donors, volunteers, staff, MSOE representatives and musicians, to a level of “community, trust and privilege.”
To increase WMSE’s positive effect on our community by providing educational opportunities for Milwaukee’s youth.
To champion Milwaukee as a vital creator of culture by bringing WMSE to a national and international audience, establishing Milwaukee and WMSE as important musical destinations and bringing widespread positive exposure to MSOE.

As WMSE ends this fiscal year, the staff and I would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity to serve our community that you have provided for us. WMSE has had an amazing 36th year and it was only possible because of you and the rest of our members. Member support continues to reaffirm our commitment to bring Milwaukee the best, most interesting, and broadest programming on the dial. WMSE volunteer DJs continue a tradition of curating phenomenal shows each week. In every show, our DJs continuously push boundaries, dig deep, and pick their sets as if they were individual love notes sent to Milwaukee and beyond. WMSE has become an integral and irreplaceable piece of Milwaukee’s music scene over the last 36 years. WMSE only exists because of the powerful enthusiasm of its loyal members, donors, volunteers, and staff. We continue grow, thrive and improve with your support. On behalf of the staff and volunteer DJs, we cannot say thank you enough. Thank you for being a member of Team WMSE.

WMSE IN THE COMMUNITY
WMSE continues to be an integral part of the local music scene and the Milwaukee community. We strive to be the best possible partner and support our community. Here are a few examples of collaborations that have helped the community:
• WMSE and MSOE Servant Leadership assisted with Milwaukee Empty Bowls, an event on MSOE’s campus to combat hunger in our community.
• WMSE donated a portion of the Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser proceeds to the Milwaukee Fire Department Coats for Kids program.
• Hunger Task Force collected over 3,300 pounds of donated food at the Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser. (That’s over 1000 pounds more than last year)
• To create a more family-friendly Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser, we worked with Artists Working in Education (AWE) to provide art activities for kids.
WMSE was a media partner of various area nonprofits supporting the arts in Milwaukee, including the Carnival of AWE, Chill on the Hill, Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Fair, and many others. For the ninth year in a row, WMSE partnered with Milwaukee Film and we will once again sponsor the Sound Visions Documentary Series at the Milwaukee Film Festival.
We are also proud to work with Roots, an organization teaching young people how to recover from drug and alcohol addiction. WMSE also aired more than 17,500 public service announcements this fiscal year. Additionally, the pool of public service announcements has been greatly expanded and focused on local nonprofit groups in southeastern Wisconsin.
BACKYARD BBQ
The WMSE Backyard BBQ is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community that supports us year-round. his annual event showcases Americana, blues, country, rock and other genres of American music. The Backyard BBQ features local musicians alongside internationally known acts. We out grew our original backyard of Cathedral Square and moved the 7th Annual Backyard BBQ to Humboldt Park in Bay View. At the 2016 Backyard BBQ we saw amazing performances from Doghouse Flowers, Trapper Schoepp, Midwest Death Rattle, The Balkun Brothers, and Sonny Knight and the Lakers. The 8th Annual Backyard BBQ is set for Sept. 2 and Alejandro Escovedo will headline.
BIG BAND GRANDSTAND
On Dec. 3rd, WMSE returned to the Turner Hall Ballroom to present the 3rd Annual Big Band Grandstand Gala and Silent Auction with Dewey Gill presented by Jenny and Bob Hillis, in honor of Bob and Genie Friedman. Last year’s performance featured “Sinatra & Basie at the Sands: A Tribute to the Men and Their Music,” a musical re-creation of Sinatra’s first live album, recorded in 1966 with Count Basie, Sinatra at the Sands. Performed live by conductor Michael Berkowitz with the 16-piece New Gene Krupa Orchestra and vocalist Tony Babino. The Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s jazz band opened this incredible night and celebration of jazz. The MYSO band members were middle and high school students in the MYSO Jazz Studies Program.
This annual gala and silent auction supports WMSE’s jazz preservation project, for the upkeep and digitization of the station’s jazz library and jazz stream. WMSE’s collection has more than 25,000 pieces of jazz and includes: CDs, 33s, 45s and 78s. There is now over 5,200 of hours of jazz streaming worldwide at wmse.org/jazzstream, which streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Big Band Grandstand helps to preserve and celebrate the music on WMSE’s weekly jazz programs and The Sunday Big Band Show with Dewey Gill. Thank you for joining us for an evening of celebration and preservation of the unforgettable era of big band jazz and mak-ing WMSE’s live jazz stream possible. We look forward to see-ing you again at this annual celebration of jazz in December!
THE 15TH ANNUAL ROCKABILLY CHILI FUNDRAISER
On March 5, approximately 4,000 people attended our 2017 Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser, hosted at MSOE’s Kern Center. The event featured a chili contest between some of Milwaukee’s top restaurants for best meat, best heat, best veggie, best dis-play, and most unique. We also had a separate contest between Milwaukee Fire Department firehouses for the best Firehouse Chili. Milwaukee Brewing Company provided thirst-quench-ing beer to sooth burning mouths. The Hunger Task Force collected over 3,300 lbs. of nonperishable food! The arts and crafts kids area was provided by our good friends at Artist Working in Education. Our annual chili pepper races were held throughout the day at the Kern Center’s running track. All of which made for a great day, raising over $72,000 toward supporting the independent music programming on WMSE.

ART & MUSIC
WMSE’s inaugural Art & Music: Fundraiser and Auction was held May 19 at the Historic Pritzlaff Building and was a resounding success with almost 1,000 in attendance. Over 200 artists created a piece art on one of the 12" by 12" wooden boards or painted live at the event. Voodoo Honey Record’s artists provided live music for the event and the Wax Addicts spun in the other room. The Milwaukee Blacksmith provided a live demonstration in the courtyard. Café Lulu, Nightmares Food Truck, the Hi Hat/Garage, Third Coast Provisions, Merriment Social, Dandan and Transfer Pizzeria and Café provided complimentary food. Craft cocktails were provide by Great Northern Distilling and Enlightened Brewery provided the beer. WMSE was able to raise over $32,000 for this first-year event. We are looking forward to next year’s event on April 6th, 2018 and know it will be even more successful.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT HIGHLIGHTS OF WMSE’S 2016-2017 FISCAL YEAR:
Drew, host of Poundcake Punk on Thursday morning, collaborated with Company Brewing to produce our third version of WMSE’s SMASH, a single malt and single hop beer. Throughout the summer, WMSE featured SMASH 2016 at parties at various partners. SMASH 2017 officially launched in June and the season will end at the 2017 Backyard BBQ.
WMSE’s third Record Store Day release is a 7" featuring Milwaukee’s Direct Hit! and was recorded live at the WMSE studio by Billy Cicerelli.
Other noteworthy events include the third annual Rock N Roll Bowl, a Dance Retrospective at Mad Planet, Joe Wong presented a live Trap Set from Colectivo’s Back Room and WMSE broadcasted live from the Riverwest 24 for 24 hours straight!
The Friday Night Freak Show is back! Once a month WMSE DJs spin before a late night showing of a cult classic film at the Times Cinema.
WMSE along with MSOE participated in Doors Open Milwaukee, as well as a remote broadcast from the Grohmann Museum during Gallery Night and Day.
On the Modern Chamber, WMSE rebroadcast Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra On Stage, the country’s longest-running national classical radio series, featuring the MSO’s 2014 and 2016 seasons, courtesy of WFMT.
LOCAL/LIVE
Every Tuesday, WMSE welcomes a Milwaukee-area artist into the Bob and Genie Friedman Live Performance Studio to perform a full set live on the airwaves from 6 to 7 PM with hosts Erin Wolf, WMSE’s Music Director, and Cal Roach, WMSE DJ and Milwaukee music writer, for our long-running Local/Live program.
The hosts collaborate to book, curate, feature, and converse with musicians, groups, and bands primarily from the Milwaukee area (and all from Wisconsin) with the intent to feature the new and up-and-coming, alongside seasoned veterans. WMSE engineer Billy Cicerelli is at the helm of each weekly band performance, creating an unbelievable live sound. This year we were also able to host several Local/Live performances and interviews live from Club Garibaldi so audience members could join in on the fun! We saw a great variety of bands come into WMSE’s studio and Club Garibaldi, including WHIPS, B~Free with Foreign Goods, Twin Brother, Webster X, the Fatty Acids, Vincent VanGREAT, Dramatic Lovers, Abby Jeanne, No/No, Joseph Huber, Soul Low, Whiskey of the Damned, Shonn Hinton & Shotgun, and many more!

WMSE’s success this fiscal year is a testament to our mission. You made it possible for WMSE to be Milwaukee’s premiere source for unique and independent
programming. WMSE’s income exceeded $500,000 for the third year in a row with a 9% increase over last year.
Every year more Sound Citizens join the sustaining membership program. This has reduced the on-air goals of the Membership Drives, so that DJs can continue to bring
you the music you love. Monthly giving in FY 2016-17 surpassed $90,000 and our events revenue set a record this year.
