Dear Friends,

There is something important about making, borrowing a phrase from Msgr. Sweeney, “a forthright expression of faith.” Two occasions that we have honored this week reinforce the responsibility that we all have—the memorial of the first canonized Filipino Saint (Sept. 28th) and the anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine Statue here at Our Lady of Peace.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the first canonized Filipino martyr. He was born in Manila around the year 1600 to a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, who were both Christians. As a young boy he was educated by Dominican priests and served as an altar boy. He became a professional calligrapher, transcribing documents in beautiful penmanship, and he was a member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. He married and was a devoted husband and father of two sons and a daughter.

He was arrested for his faith while accompanying some missionaries in Japan. At the time, the Japanese were arrested Catholics even putting them to death. Saint Lorenzo was arrested and endured all kinds of tortures until his death. He thus becomes the Protomartyr of the Philippines.

He was brought before a government official and told, “we will grant you your life, if you renounce your faith.” Lorenzo responded: “That I will never do. I am a Catholic and happy to die for God. If I have a thousand lives to offer, I would offer them to God. So, do with me as you please.” Lorenzo was martyred for his faith, along with 15 Dominicans from Spain, Italy, France, Japan, and the Philippines.

On October 7, 1983 the 32’ tall statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was erected here at Our Lady of Peace. This would be as Father Sweeney put it, “a forthright expression of faith” to draw the people of this generation to Mary’s Son, Jesus

Christ. (See Chapter 3, Our Lady’s Way) She has done a wonderful work in accomplishing the task. Countless people have been drawn closer to Jesus in the sacraments and the life of devotion by seeing her and sitting with her and conversing with her. Praise God!

An important link between both of these celebrations is the deed done. The faith that we all profess is not a formula for memorization, but a way of life. It is defined and specific, the creed helps us to know where to go; however, the heart is what moves us to make it manifest in the world around us. The lives of the martyrs and the faith-filled people that have gone before us attest to it.

In 2003, speaking about Europe in particular, St. John Paul II says that [modern] culture gives the impression of ‘silent apostasy’ on the part of people who have all that they need and who live as if God does not exist.”

Complacency is dangerous at every stage of the spiritual life. For someone struggling with mortal sin, complacency can hinder them from going to confession and making the changes they need to. For the average Catholic, complacency cause keep us from truly growing in our prayer life by settling for the mediocre. I pray enough, I’m generous enough, I am charitable enough. After all, I pray more than the person who doesn’t pray at all, I’m more generous and more charitable than the person who doesn’t give anything. Complacency in the spiritual life is often an indicator that God’s will has taken second place to my own will.

Would we deny our faith to save our life? Existing documents attest that the Japanese promised him a safe trip back home where he could be reunited with his loved ones, but San Lorenzo chose to

witness to Jesus Christ. Commitment witnesses to the Truth even when it comes at great personal cost!

In the homily during the Holy Mass for the Beatification of St. Lorenzo Ruiz, St. John Paul II said, “The example of Lorenzo Ruiz, the son of a Chinese father and Tagala mother, reminds us that everyone's life and the whole of one's life must be at Christ's disposal. Christianity means daily giving, in response to the gift of Christ who came into the world so that all might have life and have it to the full. Or, as so aptly expressed in the theme of my [St. JP II’s] visit to this country: To die for the faith is a gift to some; to live the faith is a call for all.”

If you have never accompanied us on the celebration of the Shrine Dedication Anniversary, you should. We will pray the Holy Rosary for All Nations and for each state of the United States of America. We will do this by bearing the flags of the nations and crosses with the names of the states on them and we lay them at the feet of our Blessed Mother. This rosary will take place at 12PM, October 3. If you are reading this after the fact, it’s not too late to pray the rosary for those intentions – nations and states. God knows we need the prayers. May God continue to bless us and grant us the grace to be a forthright expression of the faith!

Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,

Fr. Brian

LOST AND FOUND

PARISH REGISTRATION Are You a Registered Parishioner?

If you are over the age of 18 and attend Mass here

regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace parish.

Three main reasons why registering is important: 1. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married (whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding) all involve record of parish participation. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this will greatly delay the process. 23. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. 3. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.

———

Anyone, regardless of where they live (even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas), is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.

———

Registering is easy! Visit the parish office, or call the

office and leave a voicemail at 408-988-4585, or email [email protected] to request a registration form.
