How does Twitter influence on Footballers?

There are many footballers, who are Twitter fans. Rio Ferdinand is known to the most famous footballer online due to Twitter.

After Rio Ferdinand received snacks from Korean fans, many footballers left a message on their pages too. Although, there is no korean player in Arsenal, Jack Wilshire and Cesc Fabregas received snacks from Korean fans.

10th out of 18 teams in the league, round of 8 in the UEFA Champions league… This is Schalke’s current location.

This is the second time after 2008 for Schalke to enter the round of 8 in the UEFA Champions league. However, Schalke’s current status is not promising at all. There have been numerous rumors about Felix Magath, Schalke’s current manager, leaving the team. This is clearly because of the horrible results presented in the league. With only 33 points in 26 league matches, Schalke is currently having a hard time. Schalke finished 2nd last season just behind Bayern Munich, but now it is 10th. Except the league itself, Schalke is having its best season since it was founded. In the semi-finals for the DFB Pokal German Cup, Schalke beat Bayern Munich and is now scheduled for the finals.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s injury is a big impact on the team. However even it wasn’t for the injury Huntelaar wouldn’t have been much help to the team recently. His failure to adapt and adjust into his new team, Schalke is preventing him from scoring. In contrast, Raul, who was transferred with Huntelaar at the start of this season, is having a decent season. He is ranked 4th for goals scored with 11 goals. The Spanish certainly has done a great deal for the team.

There is still hope for the team. Jefferson Farfan’s form is spectacular. He scored 2 amazing goals in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg against

Valencia. Also the ‘newbie’ Gavranovic is another player that can help Schalke.

It is certainly true that Schalke was lucky to play relatively easy games in the UEFA Champions league. However it is no luck that it got first in the group in round of 32. If Schalke does not do better in the league, it might have to bid farewell to Magath. The dilemma, to concentrate on UEFA Champions league, Bundesliga or the DFB Pokal cup, is currently the main problem that Schalke is faced with. Schalke has to make the right decision in order to

stay as one of the major clubs in the German Bundesliga.

Tottenham VS AC MilanTeam report• Milan have failed to win five

consecutive games against English teams. The last time they beat English team was in 2007 final against Liverpool FC.

• Peter Crouch got a great chance to take revenge, for he was in Liverpool in the 2007 final against Milan.

• When Robinho was at Manchester City FC from 2008 to 2010, his team lost two times against Spurs.

• Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Carlo Cudicini, was born in Milan and he was in AC Milan’s youth team

• Injuries in AC Milan: Massimo Ambrosini (Captain), Andrea Pirlo, Kevin-Prince Boateng

• Injuries in Tottenham: Gareth BaleYounes Kaboul, Ledly King, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas (Suspended)

Match ReportAC Milan 0 – 1 Tottenham Hotspurs

Everyone including journalists predicted AC Milan’s easy victory but as soon as the referee blew whistle, Tottenham dominated the game. They passed the ball around very easily and this was because AC Milan did not oppress efficiently. Chasing the ball not the players caused fatigue in the second half. After Christian Aviati received a yellow card, AC Milan’s midfield line was even less oppressive. Making the situation worse, the 33-

year-old got injured on the 18th minute. The 33-year-old, he got injured on the 18 minutes

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s low cross to Robinho was perfect but Gomes blocked it superbly. On the half-hour, he also saved Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s outstanding free kick. Tottenham did some incisive attack, too. Van der Vaart gave his 101% for the victory at San Siro. His chip shot was very close to getting to the back of the net. Obviously, Allegri needed someone new that can change the game and he was Pato. On 48th minute, Yepes’s header was close to a goal but again, Gomes saved it. Milan continued their attack and Pato played well with Flamini. Palacios, Tottenham’s center defender, blocked his shot and he looked painful.

AC Milan gave everything in, in order to lead the game but unfortunately, Tottenham’s counter attack finally resulted in the first goal and the only goal in this match. Sandro intercepted the ball and passed to Luka Modric through two defenders. Lennon got the ball from him and he assisted to Crouch. The tall Englishman made a great goal. Later, Robinho’s shot was blocked by a defender.

Heurelho Gomes, who made several great saving was chosen to be the man of the match by Champions League officials.

Notorious Gattuso was out of controlGattuso was the captain of AC Milan on

this match, since Pirlo couldn’t play this game. He looked like a great captain for he did great for AC Milan as a captain and a Milan man.

On the 76th minute, he was booked and this made him lose control. In UEFA Champions league,

if a player is booked three times in different games, the player is suspended. Gattuso already had two yellow cards before and this meant that he could not play next game in White Heart Lane. People are still wondering why he behaved like that.

Moreover, after the game ended, Gattuso exchanged some words with Tottenham’s head coach. We still do not know what he said to Gattuso but few days later, Gattuso said he blamed me as an Italian. Whether it is true or not, Gattuso is suspended for four matches in Champions league. Later on, he admitted that he lost his temper and was totally unprofessional.

Harry Redknapp – “It was important to play in the right areas and pick the right ball. And we did.”

Massimiliano Allegri – “I think quali!cation is still up for grabs. We have to play with balance and have faith in our quality”

Gennaro Gauso – ‘I was out of control.’

Gennaro Gauso – “We got to together in the players’ tunnel, had a full match with !rst and second half. Bassong saw I was lile and assumed I was small fry.”

Tottenham VS AC Milan

Leg 2

Team informationTottenham won all four games in White Hart Lane in this UEFA Champions League. However, Milan recorded 1W1D1L in three away games. On 15th February, Peter Crouch’s goal at San Siro brought a glorious victory for this London based club.

Arsenal and Tottenham are big rivals. Their stadiums are only 6km away from each. Arsenal failed to be in the last eight in UEFA Champions league the day before. If Tottenham made it, Arsenal will be very disappointed.

Team reportTottemham is close to being in the last eight in their first ever UEFA Champions League

Milan participated UEFA Champions League every year but they are in danger now.

Tottenham injury list: Gareth Bale (not sure)

Milan suspension list: Gennaro Gatusso

Tottenham drew against Wolves on last Sunday but Milan beat their long rival, Juventus by 1-0. But the goal scorer, Gattuso cannot play this game.

Match reportMany jounalists expected that Tottenham will seek for another goal for their London fans but they didn’t. They played defensively and they tried counter-attacks. It worked well.

There was a danger but William Gallas’s right foot saved Tottenham. He experienced UEFA Champions League in Arsenal so he was the big asset for Tottenham who just debuted this big competition.

AC Milan didn’t seem like the top in Serie A. Tottenham was apparently more eager to be the last eight in their first ever in UEFA Champions League.

First time, quarterfinalAs Harry Redknapp said, it was the one of the biggest games in the history of the club. Even though they drew against AC Milan, no London fans blamed them.

It is pretty impressive record that this team is one of the last eight for it just debuted in Champions League. Tottenham’s long rival, Arsenal couldn’t make this impressive debut in the past.

Ironically, we might not be able to see Tottenham next season of UEFA Champions League. Manchester City is likely to replace their place for next season.

Harry Redknapp – It’s a great achievement for this club to be in the last eight of the Champions League; it’s amazing what the players have done.

Massimiliano Allegri – Maybe we could have been more angry in a way, more aggressive, but I’m happy with my players and I’m sorry for them.

Bayern München VS Internazionale MilanoFC Bayern München successfully took revenge in 09-10 champions league final return match against FC Internazionale Milano by 1-0. FC Bayern München now just have to draw in next game, which will take place in their home ground, to qualify this stage of Champions league.

Although there was only one goal during the whole game, just like last season’s Champions League final, the intensity of the game excited the home fans of Milan.

Having home advantage, Inter Milan vigorously attacked Bayern’s defense line from the very beginning of the match. However, Bayern’s defense’s great teamwork of defense allowed them to take the lead at the end of the match without losing any score.

Bayern’s starting wingers Ribery and Robben threatened Milan’s both left and right side of the defense throughout the whole game. However, the match seemed like it is going to end as 0.0.

But, Mario Gomez's last-minute goal earned Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory against Inter Milan. Gomez hooked the loose ball into an empty net after goalkeeper Julio Cesar had failed to hold winger Arjen Robben's shot.

After the game, Manager of Bayern, Louis van Gaal said "I am very happy with our performance,” "Inter played very well. It could have been a different result, but we deserved to win after the way we played in the second half."

From the audience’s point of view, this match was a very interesting game. It will be interesting to see Inter Milan facing Bayern at Bayern’s home ground, and how Bayern will keep their away-goal lead in their home ground.

FC Bayern München failed to revenge Defending Champion Bayern had a one-goal advantage from the first leg. However, FC Internazionale Milano made a dramatic win at FC Bayern München by 3-2 at Bayern’s home ground. As a result, although the total score was 3-3, Inter Milan qualified the round of 16 by 2 away goals.

Samuel Eto’o scored a goal in first 3 minutes of the game. By this score, he became the current top-scorer of the Champions league tied with Lionel Messi, who also scored 8 goals in Champions league of this season.

After losing one goal, Bayern scored two goals (21’ Mario Gomez, 31’ Thomas Muller) in 10 minutes. And they finished first half by 2-1 leading by one goal.

During the second half, Inter Milan showed active movement in their attacking area. Wesley Sneijder scored an equalizer, assisted by Samuel Eto’o.

Having two minutes remaining until they fail qualify to the next round, Goran Pandev turned around the game by scoring a goal, which was also assisted by Samuel Eto’o.

It was a dramatic game and Inter Milan once again beat Bayern Munich.

Schalke VS ValenciaLeg 1Team informationBoth teams won several UEFA Cups but never in the UEFA Champions league. Valencia and Schalke’s best result is runner-up and last 4 respectively.

In fact, no one predicted Schalke 04’s success in the Group Stage. They finished 1st in Group B! Lyon got second, Benfica moved to EUROPA League and Hapoel Tel-Aviv went back. They scored 10 goals which is not bad and they conceded only three goals to opponents which is amazing. They were ranked as third after Man UTD and Real Madrid.

In Group C, Man Utd was on top and Valencia was second with three points difference. They scored 15 goals which is double that of Man Utd, who scored only 7. Valencia’s goal difference was 11 which is second after Real Madrid, only.

Team reportIn 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage, they had a match in Mestalla but it finished of with a 0-0 draw.

Valencia’s last six home games against German football clubs were five draws and one defeat. It means their last victory against German club in Mestalla was in 1996 against FC Bayern Munchen in a UEFA Cup.

Their overall record against German clubs is W4 D9 L8.

Valencia has a bad memory about German club since they lost against Bayern in 2000/01 UEFA Champions league final.

Valencia’s January record was brilliant: they collected 23 points out of 27 available points.

Match reportValencia 1 – 1 Schalke

The game was very intense. Although they scored only two goals in total, they shot 25 times in total: this proves how much they attempted to score. In the first ten minutes, Schalke played more efficiently with accurate passes and a higher passing speed. Schale’s striker, Klass-Jan Huntellar had a great chance to make an early goal but he failed. Valencia’s three midfielders didn’t know what to do. They allowed Schalke to dominate.

On the 17th minute, Aritz Aduriz started Valencia’s attack. They passed few times and finally, Soldado made his sixth goal in UEFA Champions League. Mestalla fans looked jubilant at that time because they thought that Valencia would beat the German club this time.

Schlake tood many threatening shots. However, Guaita, Valencia’s goalkeeper saved every time. He’s only 25 years old, but he is very talented.

Later, Manuel Juarado’s low cross assisted Raul’s goal on the 64th minute and this set his new personal record and UEFA Champions League record, as well.

This goal once again prevented Valencia from gaining victory over a German club.

Leg 2

Team information (history)It was 1-1 on 15th February, in the Mestalla. In 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage, Valencia beat Schalke by David Villa’s goal. About ten years ago in the UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg, Schalke won against Valencia. The score was 2-0.

Team reportValencia visited Germany ten times but won only once.

Schalke won all three home games in the Group Stage.

Valencia hasn’t lost away games in the Group Stage. They won once and drew twice.

Schalke drew eight times in UEFA competition on the first leg and won six times in Gelsenkirchen

Valencia also drew eight times in UEFA competition first leg at home and won four times in the second-leg.

Schalke injury list: Klass-Jan Huntelaar, Lukas Schmitz (suspended), Jose Manuel Jurado (suspended)

Valencia injury list: None

Both teams won their latest match during weekend.

Match reportFarfan was the Man of the Match.

Valencia’s early goal threatened Schalke but it didn’t last so long. Farfan’s free kick blew Valencia’s hope away.

Roberto Soldado – ‘Schalke are not all about Raul. Schalke have many dangerous players, especially up front, and we will have to be careful.’

Unai Emery (Valencia manager) – Vicente Fuaita saved many of their chances but in the end they found a way through. We also missed a string of chances.

Felix Magath (Schalke manager) – We know still have a lot of work ahead of us, at home against a team that play with such high intensity

Page 10: 90M March Issue

10 Ninety M - March

Gavranovic’s  goal  led  Schalke  to  advance  to  the  last  eight  in  UEFA  Champions  league.  Schalke’s  best  result  in  UEFA  Champions  League  was  the  advancement  to  quarterBinal  several  years  ago.  Schalke  set  another  record  in  the  club’s  history.

Legend Raul Raul who moved from Real Madrid to Schalke 04 at the start of this season stepped one more forward to his dream that is another UEFA Champions League win. When he was in Real Madrid, he experienced a win but in last five years, Real Madrid failed to be the last eight in Europe, which was an irony.

Finally, Raul made to be the eight in Europe but in different club which is much smaller than Real Madrid. However, the size of club is doesn’t matter for him because Raul still plays football on pitch.

Man of recordsRAUL GONZALEZ.If we were to discuss the history of champions league, Real Madrid is the one that always appears to be the one of the most successful team: it won 9 champions league in total. Although Real Madrid showed

us quite poor records recently,

Real Madrid was conquered and dominated

champions 10 years ago. After winning 7th

Champions league, which was during the 1998 season, they won another

two in 2000 and 2002.

If we take a look at the players at that time, these records looks quite obvious.

David Beckham, Ronaldo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Guti, Figo, and Casillas.

By just looking at the names, it looks that it is enough to excite fans. Which means Real Madrid was full of star

players and it would not be possible to joint such team without talent.

That's why, Raul Gonzalez, who joined first team of

Real Madrid at the age of 17, is considered a hero of Real Madrid.

In 741 games 323 goals. This was a gift that Raul gave to Real Madrid. Both

the number of appearances and

number of goals hasn’t achieved by anyone in

Real Madrid. He won La Liga 6 times, and was top scorer for 2 times. He was a humble and hardworking striker. He showed us the most accurate goal scoring ability. He is gifted, but has never self satisfied. This is the reason why he made himself stands out among the stars of Real Madrid.

He was also an amazing ‘Problem solver’ as his top-scoring record of Champions league total shows us. He appeared in 140 games and scored 68 goals in Champions league.

Van NistelRooy with scored 56 goals, Henry 55 goals, Shevchenko who scored 48 goals are still chasing him, but considering their team and their age, it seems like it is impossible to break Raul’s record. Lionel Messi who scored 31 goals is the only one who is considered as the one who can break his record. Yet, it is too early to tell that he can break Raul’s record. Also, Raul is still going. Although his uniform has changed to another team, he still takes part in Champions league. He added two goals in his new team that lead them to qualify to the round of 16 stage.

Written by Sangwon Cheon & Jeff Jung

Felix Magath – It was difficult to create pressure from the beginning but after we conceded we had nothing to lose

Unai Emey – We can’t talk of bad luck tonight; we needed to be assertive and we weren’t

AS Roma VS ShakhtarLeg 1

Team informationRoma is having a tough season. They were sixth in the league on 3rd March. In the Group Stage, Roma was in group E with Bayern Munich, Basle and CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoca. Bayern got the place easily. Roma lost two games and drew once. They got 10 points, which was not bad, but their goal difference was -1. Roma was the only team that went to the Round of 16 with a negative goal difference.

On the other hand, Shakhtar surprised many people because they ended up top in the group H followed by Arsenal, Braga and Partizan Belgrade. Shaktar didn’t score a lot but they won 5 games and lost only one game in the Emirate’s Stadium, London.

Team reportShakhtar never advanced to the Round of 16 before although they attempted five times in the Group Stage before.

They have met in the 2006/07 season group stage and Roma won 4-0 at home while Shakhtar scored only one goal in Ukraine.

Shakhtar have won only once against Italian club and that was AS Roma.

Both teams coaches met ten times before, Roma’s coach won five out of ten while Lucescu won only three times.

Roma injury list: Julio Sergio, David Pizarro

Shakhtar injury list: Fernandinho, Olexandr Kucher.

Match reportShakhtar took a long winter break and so did Roma It’s left wing, Willian, was threatening to Roma: he made several beautiful crosses into the penalty box. Also, Brazilians on the Ukraine team made several chances but Roma’s goalkeeper, Doni saved them

Home team shot a lot but only three of them were aimed to the goal. Totti’s corner was wide but De Rossi recovered to pass the ball to Rodrigo Taddei. Simone Perrotta’s heading was aimed to far post and fortunately, Rat who is a Shakhtar defender scored an own goal.

As soon as Roma received a free goal from Rat, Shakhtar made a tie. It was Jadson. Again, Willian crossed from left to Jadson and his low shot was deflected by De Rossi and went beyond Doni. About ten minutes later, they made another goal and this goal was from Douglas Costa. He dribbled from deep right corner and made an unstoppable goal.

Italian home team didn’t give up. They had to defeat this Ukraine team to make a better result not only in UEFA Champions League but also in their league. Although they tried to cope with this problem, Riise slipped which allowed Douglas to run in from the right side and assist Luiz

Adriano for the third goal.

So far, Shaktar scored all four goals in Rome. A French man saved Roma from the deep slump on the 61st minute but it wasn’t enough. If Doni didn’t save Shakhtar’s several

counterattacks, there would have been more goal difference.

Shakhtar gustShakhtar is a Ukraine football club. So far, Dinamo Kyev was the most famous Ukraine football club in UEFA Champions League but Shakhtar replaces their position recently. Their best result was third in the group stage but this time, they were on top and won in the Round of 16 away match to Italy’s capital city. Since they were established, they have won only one time against Italian club. Then, how was it possible that they beat Arsenal in the group H and Roma in the Round of 16?

The main reason is Mircea Lucescu, the manager of Shakhtar Donetsk and his Brazilian players. This manager has managed this team for long time to make this successful result in UEFA Champions League and Ukraine league. Also, five Brazilian players; Jadson, Luiz Adriano, Willian, Douglas Costa and Eduardo contributed a lot.

Claudio  Ranieri  (Roma)  –  We  weren’t  lucky  tonight  but  we  won’t  give  up  because  it  could  be  the  other  way  around  in  Ukraine

Mircea  Lucescu  (Shaktar)  –  I  knew  the  level  of  my  players  and  I  was  completely  conBident  they  would  give  their  all  to  achieve  this  result.

Philippe  Mexes-‐  we  will  be  facing  a  very  strong  team  happen in football.

AS Roma VS ShakhtarLeg 2

Team informationThis Ukraine team won In Roma’s home which was pretty impressive. Roma has a big change that can threat Shakhtar. Roma’s former forward, Cincenzo Montella replaced Claudio Ranieri’s place on 21st February.

They met in the Group Stage in 2006/07 UEFA Champions League. Shakhtar won 1-0 in Ukraine while Roma won by four goals in Italy. This victory stopped Shakhtar’s five successive home wins against Italian opponents.

Team ReportFernandinho is back now. He is one of the famous Brazil connections and he scored about 20% of Shakhtar’s total goals scored.

Shakhtar injury list: Kuchker, Dmytro Chygrinskly, Olexly Gay, Luiz Adiano Razvan Rat

Roma injury list: Menez (suspension), Marco Cassetti (suspension), Adriano (not sure)

Match ReportSimply, Shakhtar dominated this game in Ukraine. Roma’s shots were off

targeted and they were busy to commit fouls to block Shakhtar. They just enjoyed this game at home comfortably.

The first goal was scored on the 18th minute. Willian scored quite easily. Roma players didn’t put pressure on him so it was

too easy chance to this Brazilian. Roma kicked

their chance away on 28th minute. Marco

Borriello’s penalyy was blocked by the Shakhtar goalkeeper and Mexes’s red card was disaster.

In the second half, Willian and Eduardo

made a perfect second goal for

Shakhtar and three minutes before the end,

Eduardo scored another goal that finalized the game.

As a result, Shakhtar won against Roma by an aggregate score of 6-2. Shakhtar set its new record as well.

Football in East EuropeFootball is popular in Europe but basically in West and South Europe like England, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc. East Europe-based clubs have

made some good result in UEFA Champions league and Europa League. Shakhtar is the last champion of UEFA Cup which is now Europa league. Shakhtar become one of

the top clubs in East Europe in the past three years.

In last UEFA Champions League, CSKA Moscow beat Sevilla FC in the Round of 16.

The main reason why these clubs are having the heyday right now is because of owners’ investments. For example, the new owner of Shakhtar is the 148th wealthiest person in the world. He spent much money to make Shakhtar as the best team in Ukraine and East Europe.

East European teams will now be a big part of the football market.

Written by Jeff Jung

Mircea Lucescu – I expected a result like this because I have trusted in my team; I trust in our preparations, in the atmosphere at our stadium

Vincenzo Montella – I think we are improving and we shouldn’t be demoralized by this defeat – that was the main problem in the team when I arrived

Manchester Utd VS Marsellie Leg 1Manchester United, without some key players due to injuries, drew against Marsellie by 0-0. Manchester United or Marsellie now have to win in Old Trafford in order to qualify to the next stage of champions league.

Manchester United played without many key players, such as Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson and Ji-sung Park, had to struggle when playing against Marseille for the first game of the first knock down round of Champions League.

Manchester united placed Berbatov, Wayne Rooney and Nani upfront, and used 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 formation. This formation is the formation that Alex Ferguson uses when Manchester United faces strong teams in Champions League Tournament. By reducing number of attackers, this makes the midfield denser, which will ultimately balance attack and defense. Although, many media predicted that Manchester united will have a easy game, because most of its starting players were injured, so Alex Ferguson used this formation.

Although Wayne Rooney, Bervatov and Nani, Reds’ rising star, were starting strikers, Manchester United failed to score. Bervatov was isolated from the team for the whole 90 minutes and Rooney showed poor performance this day: he played as a winger, which disappointed their away fans in France. Although Wayne Rooney is having a poor season, Marseille defenders were tightly marking Waryne Rooney and Bervatov.

Marsellie focused on defense and relied on counter-attack. Gabriel Heinze, one of the star players of Marsellie and former Manchester United defender, led Marselli’s defence. Their wingers tried many overlaps that threatened Manchester united few times. However, majority of them were inefficient. Gabriel Heinze mentioned that, he wanted to play for Manchester United again, if

possible. He still has respect for Alex Ferguson.

"A goal away from home is always important — we didn't do that, that's a disappointment for me," Ferguson said. "At this stage of the competition, away goals count. But you have to say that Manchester United at home, we have a good chance."

During this game, the Portuguese winger, Nani was distubed by laser beam by the Marsellie home fans from stand. Nani requested the UEFA Official to further investigate this incident.

Leg 2Javier Hernandez led Manchester United to Champions league Quarter Final Javier Hernandez, who joined Manchester United for 10-11 season, scored two vital goals for Manchester united. Rooney, who was altruistic in this game, played as midfielder.

Manchester United conceded one own goal by Wes Brown, who unfortunately headed the ball in to his own goal, which Paul Scholes failed to clear it away.

However, the double by Chicharito led them to qualify this stage of champions league.

After the first goal, Manchester United dominated the game, and Marseille relied mostly on counter attack.

Barcelona VS ArsenalIn the group stage, Arsenal was nit disappointing although they scored 18 goals which is the most goal scored among other 31 teams. Everyone expected Arsenal on top and Shakhtar or Braga as second. However, very surprisingly, Shaktar was above Arsenal in the group H.

Of course, Barcelona was on top in the group D followed by Copenhagen, Ubin Kazan and Panathinaikos. Group D is one of the easiest grounds to predict who will join the Round of 16. It looks obvious that Barcelona is the best in the world and the other three teams are from North or East Europe.

Last year, they met in the quarterfinal but Barcelona beat Arsenal easily. I like Arsene Wenger’s playing style and his principle but I believe he should change it if he wants more trophies and especially the Big Ear.

Team report• They met before in 2006 UEFA

Champions League final and Barcelona was the winner.

• The Gunners won all three home games in the Group Stage with 14 goals scored.

• Barcelona lost only one time out of 15 away games.

• Thierry Henry who experienced UEFA Champions League both in Arsenal and Barcelona is now in USA.

• Csec Fabregas left Barcelona when he was young and he is still in Guardiola’s rader.

• Javier Mascherano was in Liverpool so he knows how to beat Arsenal but it is matter that he is not in starting.

• Arsenal injury list: Abou Diaby, Lukasz Fabianski, Thomas

Vermaelen, Bacary Sagna (suspended)

• Barcelona injury list: Carles Puyol, Jeffren

Match reportFrom the beginning of the game, Arsenal oppressed Barcelona and they looked very urgent. They were totally different team compared to last year’s quarter final against Barcelona that ended with 2-2 in the Emirate’s Stadium. Samir Nasri who just came back from hamstring strain made beautiful free kick but Valdes saved it more beautifully. There was an Arsenal’s classic passing game by Walcott, Fabregas and Van Persie but Valdez did well this time.

Barcelona also has several pass masters and they provided beautiful and easy chances to David Villa and Lionel Messi but both of them kicked those away from the goal. Szczesny who debuted UEFA Champions League was superb. However, finally, Messi and Villa combination made a great goal for Barcelona. There was a Messi’s decisive pass to Villa and he made a really easy goal beyond Szczesny.

Arsenal tried to make tie but Van Persie missed several times although Jack Wilshere gave his best against Barcelona. Both team had many chances throughout the game but Messi, Villa and Van Persie missed all of them.

On 78 minutes, Gael Clichy’s pass was delivered to Robin van Persie and ironically, he saw the

little gap between Valdez and near post. It looked like there is no

angle but he made it. He missed numerous

easy goal chances but he made a really difficult goal.

On 83 minutes, Nasri passed to Arshavin near

penalty area and he scored quite late

goal. Now, it’s 2-1,

Arsenal is leading. Even Guardiola’s last card, Adriano couldn’t make second goal for this Spanish club.

Arsenal finally won against Barcelona in their home but the second game in Camp Nou will not be easy even though Pique won’t be there since he received his third yellow card in this game.

A French professor, Arsene WengerThis old French gentleman has managed Arsenal FC since 1996. He is 61 years old and he has a master degree in economics from Strasbourg University. He’s a French but he can speak six languages; French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese.

He played as a sweeper when he was young. He wasn’t that famous as a footballer but he is known for his managerial career. He was Nancy’s manager from 1984 to 1987. He was also in AS Monaco for 7 years. Surprisingly, He went to Japan to manage Nagoya Grampus Eight and he made great success in there. That was the reason how a manager in Japan could be Arsenal’s manager.

Three FA Premier League wins, four FA Cups, 4 Community Shield and one runner-up in UEFA Champions League. He was nominated as the World Coach of the Decade for 2000s. In this game, Arsenal was losing until about 80 minutes. However, Arsene Wenger didn’t use any substitutes. He didn’t say the actual reason but I guess it was his tactic rather than a mistake. I think he worried about Arsenal’s teamwork. They seemed good just unlucky. As soon as David Villa was replaced with Keita, Arshavin was in and Song was out.

Page 15: 90M March Issue

15 Ninety M - March

Barcelona without Villa means Messi is the only way to do attack so Wenger could think ‘there’s no need to defense any more.’ His second card, Bendtner was substituted on 77 minutes and these two subs did great job. In fact, Andrey Arshavin made second goal!

Barcelona VS Arsenal From hero to zero?Arsenal lost 6-3 in total to Barcelona last year and at the Camp Nou, Messi was great. He scored four goals in that match. Last month, David Villa scored early goal but Van Persie and Andrey Arshavin saved this London club from big disappointment. However, this Villa’s goal will bring some advantage to Barcelona FC.

Team report• Barceona won 11 ties in UEFA

continental competition when they lost the first leg away from their home while they failed 12 times in total.

• Arsenal won the first leg 15 times in total and they made quarterfinal 14 times out of 15.

• Barcelona injury list: Carles Puyol, Gerad Pique (suspended)

• Arsenal injury list: Alex Song, Theo Walcott, Robin Van Persie(??)

• Latest result: Barcelona won against Real Zaragoza with Keita’s only goal (1:0)

• Latest result: Arsenal drew with Sunderland in its league (0:0) so they missed great chance to chase Manchester United while they lost against Chelsea.

Match reportIt was Barcelona’s one side game. Arsenal couldn’t make a shoot but mysteriously, they scored one. It was Sergio Busquets’s own goal. It looked really great, by the way.

It looked little tough to score against 9 defenders in Arsenal’s side but Iniesta, Xavi and Messi made two goals. Their passing’s were pinpoint and Messi was just like the Messi in FiFA 2011.

Robin Van Persie’s red card was debatable because it might be hard to listen the referee’s whistle when 95,000 people made big noise. However, even if Robin Van Persie played, he couldn’t stop Barcelona’s pinpoint passing game.

Arsene Wenger’s faultArsene Wenger played very defensively in this game which is not a Arsenal’s style. This shows how much Wenger and Arsenal want to win the trophy. They failed the Carling Cup few weeks ago so they really wanted to be

the final eight in UEFA Champions league.

The problem was why Wenger played like this. He tried to copy Mourinho’s Inter Milan last year but they have to be more defensive after Van Persie received a red card. Last year, Mourinho made all 10 players to play under the half line after Stankovic was banned.

Also, why Wenger used Rosciky, not Arshavin? Probably because he thought Rosciky is better at defence than Arshavin but if he wanted to do counter attack, they needed at least one fast runner like Arshavin.

Josep Guardiola – We are so happy with our performance and I think we deserve to be in the quarter-!nals

Arsene Wenger – We were beaten by a terri!c side – the best in Europe. We are out, but when you play against Barcelona you know it will be difficult.

Arsene Wenger – We are frusted with his (Busacca’s) decision. It is very difficult to understand his aitude.

Cesc Fabregas – Great support from Arsenal fans. I take full blame for the result tonight. One of the worst moments of my life. I apologize. (twier)

Arsene Wenger – It was one of those special night and we needed to be a special team. The game promised a lot and it didn’t disappoint.

Josep Guardiola – We dominated and more or less controlled the game. It’s a pity that we lost but these things happen in football.

Johan Djourou – We know Barcelona are a a great team, and we all know about Lionel Messi, but don’t think it is only about him becaue he gets great sevice from other players.

Olympique Lyonnais vs Real MadridLeg 1

The first clash of the strongest teams in La Liga and Ligue 1 ended with a 0-0 draw. Real Madrid again failed to get victory against Lyon. This is the 7th game between the two teams in 5 seasons and the French team had never lost to Real Madrid with 3 wins and 4 draws. Lyon was the team that knocked Real Madrid out of the UEFA Champions league. Real Madrid again failed to break the jinx.

The two teams kept an intense atmosphere going on in the first half. Both teams played rough and it was obvious that Real Madrid players were trying really hard to break the jinx. However no goals were scored.

As soon as the second half started, Real Madrid got a freekick in a very good spot. Christiano Ronaldo’s shot hit the crossbar. Few minutes later, Sergio Ramos’ header also landed on the crossbar leading Real Madrid’s player into

frustration.

At 63rd minute, Mourinho switched Adebayor with Benzema. After a minute Benzema went on th e grounds, he got a pass from Ronaldo, dribbled past a defender and shot the ball to the back of the net.

Desperately Lyon switched on Pjanic, Pied and Briand to strengthen the attacking line. Eventually at the 83rd minute Lyon succeeded to score an equalizer. Gourcuff’s cross hit a defender’s head and landed right in front of Gomis and he volleyed the ball which hit the back of the net.

The game again reminded Real Madrid of the jinx. If Real Madrid does not defeat Lyon in the second leg, Real Madrid will again fail to advance into the last 8.

Leg 2Real Madrid finally broke the ‘Lyon jinx’. At Bernabeu, Real Madrid triumphed over Lyon with a 3-0 score. This is the first victory in 8 games with Lyon. This victory led Real Madrid to advance to the next round with an aggregate score of 3-1. Advancement to the last 8 is the first time in 7 years for Real Madrid. Although Real Madrid holds the record for most number of champions, it wasn’t able to get past the round of 16 since 2004.

Real Madrid dominated the whole game. For 65 minutes, Lyon didn’t have any shots. Marcelo scored the first goal. At the 37th minute, Marcelo did a 1 – 2 play with Ronaldo, dribbled past defenders and hit the ball to the back of the net. Following Marcelo’s goal, Benzema also succeeded to score at the 66th minute with a 1 on 1 chance with Lyon’s goalkeeper. 10 minutes later Di Maria’s goal finished the game off.

Real Madrid is to play Tottenham Hotspurs which is a relatively easy game.

FC Copenhagen vs Chelsea FCLeg 1Chelsea succeeded to pull off a 0-2 clean victory against the Danish team on its away game. Nicolas Anelka scored one goal in each half and reminded the fans of his value as a striker. The previous weekend, Chelsea had lost to Everton and failed to win the FA Cup two seasons in a row. This victory allowed Chelsea to relax.

17th minute, Anelka took advantage of the former Chelsea player Gronkjaer’s horrible pass and dribbled into a 1 on 1 position with the goalie and finished off with a clean right foot shot. Chelsea kept on leading the game with Malouda and Torres continuously attacking and thus confusing the defenders.

The first half ended with no more goals. Just 9 minutes after the second half started, Lampard’s through pass allowed Anelka again to score easily. This made 0-2 to the away team and Anelka, with 7 goals, was tied with Samuel Eto’o in the top scorer ranking table.

Anelka was switched off and Drogba replaced him and Ancelotti explained that this decision was for Drogba to have a rest for the next fixturea. Drogba failed to get another goal for Chelsea and the game ended with Anelka’s 2

goals. Fernando Torres again failed to score his debut goal for Chelsea.

Chelsea as a result of this game has an easier game at home. It can certainly advance to the last 8 unless Chelsea fails to keep the aggregate score to its advantage at home.

Leg 2

Although Chelsea drew with Copenhagen 0-0, because of the 0-2 win at away, with 2-0 aggregate score it advanced to the last 8.

Since Chelsea had a clean victory at the away game, it was in a situation where it could play easily at home. Drogba and Anelka were up top with Lampard supportingg from behind them. By playing most of the starters Chelsea manager Ancelotti showed his determination to make sure Chelsea get through to the next round.

Despite the numerous attempts, Chelsea attackers failed to score. Copenhagen goalkeeper Wiland was undoubtedly the man of the match. He was the main obstacle that prevented the Chelsea forwards from scoring goals for the home fans.

As soon as the second half started Drogba got a perfect cross but missed just to the left of the

post. Later on, Mikel’s header hit the crossbar: Chelsea was surely unlucky. Ancelotti, since the game wasn’t flowing to Chelsea’s advantage, switched Torres and Malouda on. But even them could not get the ball past Wiland.

Even though Chelsea advanced to the next round, this disappointing game is surely worrying.

This is Chelsea’s current address...

After the victory over Manchester United, Chelsea is starting to come back to its deadly form. If Chelsea wins another Manchester United game, it is certainly not a mission impossible to win the league, two seasons in a row. Chelsea has gotten into round of 8 in the UEFA Champions league and has reached 3rd in the league. Its victory over the Manchester teams (Man U and Man City) brought it back to a position where winning the league is possible.

If Chelsea gains another 3 points in the away game at Old Trafford, there is only a 3 point difference between Manchester United and Chelsea. Arsenal is currently only 4 points ahead of Chelsea. Now, no one knows who is going to ranked first in the league. Manchester United is currently severely suffering from lack of players due to numerous injuries in the team and Arsenal is definitely not motivated enough right now.

In order for Chelsea to regain its champion place, everything has to be perfect. Torres needs to get his destructive form back: he hasn’t been able to score his debut goal yet. David Luiz is certainly a great signing, since he has been displaying outstanding performances recently. Currently most of the Chelsea squad is back and fit from injury.

Chelsea captain John Terry stated in an interview, “We will never give up. We will have to continue winning and watch what happens eventually.” He is enthusiastic about the revival of Chelsea and the possibility to win both the Champions league and the premier league.

With Drogba and Anelka gradually reviving, Lampard coming back, Luiz defending well and other player being enthusiastic, Chelsea is certainly not heading for a mission impossible. If Chelsea manages to win most of their leftover games this season, it still has a chance to regain its glory.

Chelsea - Mission Impossible?

Rising Goal-Getters in EPL

Newest transfers and injuries have given these following strikers chances to appear in the English Premier League games. These strikers have currently put on excellent performances and their form is destructive.

Demba BaClub: West HamAge: 25Nationality: SenegalBa is undoubtedly the striker with the best form in the past few gameweeks. The French-born Senegalese has scored 4 goals in just 5 appearances. It is not all 90-minute games, he has done this all in just 340 minutes. West Ham got Demba Ba this January from 1899 Hoffenheim. In Hoffenheim he scored 40 goals in 103 appearances which is a remarkable result considering his young age. Ba also has scored in a FA Cup game for West Ham and the manager Avram Grant is very happy with this new striker. Grant said after the West Brom game, "It is very difficult to mark him (Ba) and he hits the target. That is what you want from a striker. I think twice they cleared off the line. I think this is the most important thing for a striker. Movement and hit the target – and that is what he did. And he can play anywhere – right, left, behind." Ba might be the savior for West Ham to pull them out of relegation.

Carlos VelaClub: West Bromwich Albion (on loan from Arsenal)Age: 22Nationality: MexicoAlready well-known as a young substitute striker in Arsenal, Carlos Vela has shown his potential once again at his new team WBA. In just 2 appearances (28

minutes in total), he got two of his shots at the back of the net. This amazing result shows that this Mexican is certainly a decent goal-getter. His young age is also promising since he has a long career left and much space for him to improve even more.

Leon BestClub: Newcastle UnitedAge: 24Nationality: Ireland

The English- born Irish has been rewarded the chance to show his talent off. After Carroll left for Liverpool, Newcastle

United is trying to find a replacement in the attacking line. Leon Best is

one of the candidates and his recent form is promising. 6 goals and 1 assist in

10 appearances is a result that cannot be neglected. His deadly form started with his hat-trick against West Ham with another 3 goals in 5 games. Leon Best might be the right goal-getter that can maintain Newcastle’s spectacular performance this season.

Daniel SturridgeClub: Bolton Wanderers (on loan from Chelsea)Age: 21Nationality: England

This young English striker is clearly a capable football player. He has already shown his ability in numerous

appearances for Chelsea. Despite his young age, he has scored 6 goals and 6 assists in the past 3

seasons and now this season, he is starting to show his full talent. In just 5 appearances for Bolton he has scored 4 goals. A 4 goal streak: one per one game. He wasn’t able

to score against Aston Villa but he was sure a threat to the

defenders of Villa. Only 21 years old, Daniel Sturridge

has the potential to develop into one of the most capable goal-getters in the league.

How Premier leaguers party in London

In the central part of London, May Fair,

there are many famous brand shops,

hotels and great vehicles around. When

the city starts to get darker, restaurants

and pubs start to get ready for customers.

Although there are many great pubs

and restaurants, there is one place which

is full of people all the time. It is called

Funky Buddha, the best night club in

London. Funky Buddha is famous for many

English Premier League players visiting

and drinking there.

Unlike other clubs in London, only

people with a membership card and their

friends can go into Funky Buddha.

However, even if VIPs try to come in, if that

customer is tipsy, and cannot drink

anymore, he/she is not allowed to come in.

Now people might wonder, how is this

place full of people then? This is because

many people go to the entrance of Funky

Buddha, to see EPL’s star players such as

Cesc Fabregas.

When you go into the club, there are a

variety of coloured LED lights. There are

always people dancing in the club, trying

to meet new people. According to the

owner of Funky Buddha, Usher’s songs are

the most popular songs in the club

English Premier

league players

normally go to

Funky buddha on

Tuesday. This is

because after they

play a match at

weekends and have

recovery sessions

on Monday and

Tuesday, they have

a rest on

Wednesday. Most of

the time, players

from Chelsea,

Arsenal, Tottenham

and many other clubs in London, come to

the club. Many away players to London

also visit Funky Buddha after they have a

game. Players prefer staying in VIP rooms,

because many fans try to run in to them

outside. So, there are many body guards

standing outside the VIP door.

The money that football players use

to party is huge. Firstly, to stay in

rooms, each person has to pay £800 .

There are some players who spend

£15,000 just on one night. Although,

normal people cannot afford this

amount of money, this is nothing for

football players. Wayne Rooney is

known to earn approximately £22,500

per week, so this shows the high

standard of living of English Premier

leaguers.

There are other celebrities who go

to Funky Buddha quite often, other than

football players. For example, Lewis

Hamilton (F1), Puff Daddy (Singer),

Prince Harry and his friends have

partied in Funky Buddha. Many football

players get to socialize with many other

celebrities in Funky Buddha. For

football players, it is a great place to

have a party with many celebrities.

According to Funky Buddha,

players do not normally drink Vodka

unless they are having a Christmas

party or they have won the English

Premier league. They normally drink

champagne and cocktails, and they

only drink little, as they have at least

one game per week during the season.

Didie Drogba is known to be the

most sociable person in the club. He

never stays in the

room he paid for, he

always walks

around and tries to

meet new people.

He is not only

famous in Stamford

Bridge, but also

outside the

stadium.

John Terry

loves singing in

front of people. In

2008, when

Chelsea hosted a Christmas party, Terry

was singing by using a Karaoke

machine. According to the people who

were at that party he was holding the

microphone for several hours. Although,

it is different for players, the majority of

the players normally return home at 3

AM.

The main reason, why Funky

Buddha is the most popular night club

is that the paparazzi cannot come into

the club. Although many paparazzi have

tried to get into the club with small

cameras and camcorders, due to tight

security, they all failed to do so. When

players return home, staff from the club

help players to get rid of paparazzi. This

is why many footballers prefer going to

Funky Buddha

rather than other

night club.

Staff of Funky

Buddha said that,

when there is an

Arsenal and

Tottenham game,

also known as

North London

Derby, staff are very

cautious. This is

because, although

players know each

other personally,

anything can happen when players

drink. However, when both teams come

to the club, staff try to make sure the

Arsenal players do not get close to the

Tottenham players.

To sum up, this culture shows that

the English premier league football

players not only play football well but

also they are gregarious. This could be

very different in Asian leagues, as

drinking alcohol is against some of the

countries’ religions such as Muslim.

DULWICH EXCLUSIVEInterview with mr.hegarty

1. As a Scottish football fan, can you tell us anything interesting about the Scottish league?Without wishing to sound totally biased (which I am!), Celtic were the first British team and the only Scottish team to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1967, defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. Every single player in the Celtic team that day (including subs) were born and lived within a 30-mile radius of the Celtic Park stadium! Imagine that! Basically every player from the same city!I very much doubt that this feat will ever be repeated, especially in European Football!

2. What do you think about the relatively small size of the league? Do you want more teams? There has been talk of changing the SPL set-up, especially in trying to make the Scottish First Division a little more interesting and similar in format to ‘The Championship’ in England. One of the frustrations in the SPL is that it is the same two teams challenging for honours every year! Many of the smaller teams struggle when they reach the SPL, although Inverness Caledonian Thistle seem to contradict that point! I would love to see Celtic and Rangers joining the Premier League or a ‘midweek’ European league, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon!

3. Why do you support Celtic?I was born in Glasgow and lived there for a few years and many of my family members follow Celtic FC. My mother’s cousin (Paul McStay) was the captain of Celtic and Scotland in the 1990s and played over 600 games for the club. I had very little choice in supporting anyone else really! Even my Gran follows the results closely!

4. Who do you think is/was the best player at Celtic?A very difficult question! In my time as a fan I have had the pleasure of watching some great players at the club, including: Henrik Larsson, Paulo Di Canio, Pierre Van Hooijdonk, Mark Viduka, Lubo Moravcik and Shunsuke Nakamura! But personally my favourite player was Chris Sutton. Not an obvious choice, but we signed him from Chelsea for 5 million pounds in 2000 and he turned out to be a wonderful signing. He had an amazing capacity to play as a central defender, central midfielder and as a centre

forward! He was consistently good in each of those positions! I don’t remember ever seeing

him having a bad game for the club! He should definitely have received more England caps!

5. If you can bring any player to Celtic park, whom do you want to bring?

Ever since Alan Stubbs left for Everton in 2001, defending well has been a problem for us! Of course I would love to see a Fabregas, Xavi or Messi wearing the Hoops, but I would actually choose the Barca defender Gerard Pique! He is technically superb, consistent and a very creative footballer who seems to be getting better and better! Alex Ferguson must be kicking himself for letting him leave Manchester United!

6. If you can release any players from Celtic, whom are you going to release? We have a Dutch defender (Glenn Loovens) in the squad who just never looks comfortable when he plays in the first team. We have loaned him out to F.C Copenhagen and I’m hoping he stays there!

7. Compare to other clubs in Scottish league or even European leagues, Celtic bought quite many Asian players (Shunsuke Nakamura, Ki Sung Yeung, Cha Du-Ri). What do you think about these signings? It is clear that although our club has very little debt (9 million pounds) in comparison to other major European clubs, we simply cannot contend financially with many other major teams! It is now rare to see Celtic spending more than 2-3 million on a player! To combat this, the club now tries to unearth new talent in Africa and Asia. Many good young players are picked up at a very early age in Europe, so we as a club have looked to the East. The J-League is now a very strong league and there are many excellent Japanese and Korean players emerging, if we can get these players first and gain new fans in Asia too, that’s not a bad thing!

On February 26th, the ranking table displayed on the

official UEFA website changed. German Bundesliga was in 3rd and Italian Serie A fell to 4th. The leagues were ranked

by the number of points that reflects the past 5 years

of the league’s results. The results include the leagues’ teams’

behavior in the UEFA Champions league and the Europa league. Bonus points are given if teams get to round of 8. With 68,103 points, German Bundesliga triumphed over Italian Serie A (59,981 points) by 8,122 points. Spanish La Liga finished off second with 77,329 points and English Premierleague kept its 1st place with 82,928 points.

After German Bundesliga started to fall since 2001, it never came back to the Big 3 leagues. However, in 2008 it finally got its 4th place back by beating the French league. Last year with only 131 points behind Serie A, German Bundesliga was already known to come back this season. And now, in a decade, German Bundesliga is back in the Big 3. The reason for this triumph is Bayern Munich and Schalke 04’s good results in the UEFA Champions league and Leverkusen’s advance into the round of 16 in the Europa league. In contrast, all the Italian teams in the Europa League failed to advance and two of the 3 teams displayed poor performances in

the Champions league round of 16.

Being in the Big 3 gives so many more privileges to the league. It is offered one more ticket to the UEFA Champions league. This means that from next season (2012~2013), 1st~4th in the league will get a chance to enter the UEFA Champions league and 5th and 6th can enter the Europa Leauge.

One of the Bundesliga officials stated that, “This is the result of our hard working and preparation. We are aiming for the Spanish La Liga now.” German Bundesliga fans are surely excited since they can see more teams in the UEFA tournaments and proudly claim their league one of the Big 3 leagues.
