When  I  first  became  involved  with  CJMP  as  technical  director  (then  president!),  it  was  most  certainly  a  'community'  thing  -­‐  a  neighbour  asked  me  if  I  wouldn't  mind  lending  a  hand.  I  had  a  problem  with  community  radio  at  the  time—  namely,  I  couldn't  hear  it.  Naturally,  that's  where  I  started,  and  we've  come  a  long  way.  Featured  in  the  CJMP  Historical  Museum  (my  living  room)  is  the  truck-­‐hood-­‐mount  CB  radio  antenna  that  was  retired  when  we  did  the  first  of  our  antenna  upgrades.  While  it's  an  ongoing  project  (stay  tuned  for  some  exciting  news  on  this  front!),  it  was  a  great  success  for  one  of  our  more  obvious  goals  -­‐  let  the  people  listen.  Now,  every  time  I  hear  someone  mentioning  tuning  in  from  home,  or  from  work,  or  when  waiting  long  periods  of  time  for  a  ferry,  it  makes  

me  realize  we're  also  doing  well  in  another  sense  -­‐  making  people  WANT  to  listen.  So  thank  you,  listeners,  for  showing  your  support  and  sharing  in  our  success.  If  you  keep  on  tuning  in  and  loving  community  radio,  we'll  keep  making  it  better  and  giving  you  even  more  reasons  to  want  to  turn  your  radio  on.

The last year has been an amazing journey at CJMP as more members, volunteers and programmers have joined together to grow the station.

In 2014 we surpassed our goals and gained 84 new members. Wow!

We’ve also got new shows on the airwaves and more slated to begin in the next few months.

Funding from a 2014 Radiometres grant gave us a few paid positions, including a First Nations Language/Content coordinator. The grant also created partnerships with Cortes Island (CKTZ) and Salmon Arm (CKVS), which has allowed us to share broadcasting and learn from each other. This year, we’ve applied for another Radiometres grant, that would increase our number of part-time paid positions (from 3 to 4) and maintain the two radio partnerships we’ve already made.

Survey matters

As a result of a recent online survey we have a better idea of what our listeners want to hear.

You told us you valued local political coverage during and after the latest municipal elections, as well as our live music DJs and First Nations content.

Involving more seniors and youth at the station and increasing the range of diverse voices on the airwaves are goals we’re working toward, along with moving our studio to a more accessible location.

We’re always looking for ideas, time and resources. Let us know if you can help!

Thank you to everyone who participated.

It takes a lot of support from many different avenues to establish a successful non-profit community radio station.

One person who’s worked behind the scenes is Terry Joyce. Terry set up our podcasting system as well as our stream and audio logging. He’d been paying for and supporting our streaming server and podcast storage out of his own pocket for the last couple of years at least.

In January, Laura Berezan conducted a 3-day workshop on non-profit board development that helped us take a closer look at our organization so that we could move into the future with fewer growing pains.

Partnerships with the community have also boosted our strength. Thank you to: Townsite Brewery, Magpie’s Diner, Bruce Finlay and Career Link.

What we’re planning...

Soon, our modest 5 watt signal strength will grow by leaps and bounds.

The picture to the right shows our current signal with spotty coverage, especially around Cranberry and south of Powell River.

The map below shows what our signal would look like if we moved our tower from where it currently stands above CJMP and the bowling alley, to the top of Gallagher Hill.

Total cost of the tower relocation is $12,000. We’ve applied for grants to cover the majority of the cost, but will look to donations for the remaining $500.

With your support, you can help us get there.

The expanded coverage would include parts of Courtenay as well as Cumberland and Lund.

We’re hoping to have the tower in place by June 2015!

music. Favourite things about Powell River: The view, the sounds, the people, the radio. Not necessarily in that order. What do you like about community radio? It’s a local, successful cooperative effort; not an easy thing to pull off anywhere, let alone in a small community! What else gets you out of bed? My painting and media work, my veggie garden, to see what the ocean and sky look like. Current favourite song/artist? Basement Jaxx (Junto) and Brit DJ Duke Dumont Explain the name of your show: the “1000 magnet” aspect comes from an ad in ‘70s comic books. Magnets = nerdy science + magic + a part of radio technology.

Jason Schreurs Show: It’s Go Time! When: Thursdays 10pm -11pm Describe your show: A high-energy, high-impact show filled to the brim with punk,

hardcore, metal indie rock and more. Favourite thing about Powell River: The ever-growing music scene and the optimism of the people living in our beautiful location. What about community radio? I like that they let me play whatever I want and give me the freedom to do my show, my way. What else gets you out of bed? Pure adrenaline fuelled through amazing music, amazing food, and even more amazing people. Fav song/artist? That’s like asking me who my favourite child is: not going to happen. Some mainstays: Fugazi, Hot Water Music, Slayer, Converge, Propaghandi... Favourite animal? A chupacabra. Look it up and get stoked.

Every day of the week we feature live and original programming from our CJMP studio. Listen from your radio or online at cjmp.ca. Many shows are podcasted and archived too so there’s lots of ways to listen!

In this issue we’re highlighting our Friday Live line-up of local DJs. Starting at Noon, we host a live simulcast from CJSF (SFU) with Wild Salmon Warrior Radio. At 1pm, 1000 Tiny Magnets takes you on a funk-filled, dance and electronic musical odyssey. Next up at 3pm David hosts the Unending Subtleties of Powell River for two hours of all things psychedelic. Every Day is Like Sunday with Bad Karen tunes into great music and upcoming events “in the coastal town they forgot to shut down” (5pm-7pm). Cowbell Radio at 7pm by DJ Kamandi mixes modern dance and indie music, with the occasional rap song and on-air haircuts. Holding it all together is the THE POW!TOWN GET DOWN from 8pm-10pm by DJ Triple Dub, spinning Dub and Reggae and Dancehall sounds that get people on their feet. And at 10pm The Stunt Man’s Radio Show broadcasts from Vancouver and sends funk and hip-hop over the airwaves with the occasional guest.
