HFGS Jog-a-Thon 2016

We are so grateful to Mr. Steve Benedict, Mr. & Mrs. Alejo, Mr. Gerry Lim, Mr. Brown, our PTO Board, Parent Volunteers, Parents of 8th Grade Class, Members of the Clergy, Mrs. Teresa

Nelson, Coach MacGuinness Huntley, Coach Aaron Bautista, Mr. Tomas Makiling, Faculty, Staff and Students for a Successful Jog-a-Thon!

What is Fitness?

Fitness does not only refer to being physically fit, but also refers to a person’s mental state as well. If a person is physically fit, but mentally unwell or troubled, he or she will not be able to function optimally. Mental fitness can only be achieved if your body is functioning well. You can help relax your own mind and eliminate stresses by exercising regularly and eating right.

Why is it Important to Be Physically Fit?

In order to maintain a relaxed state of mind, a person should be physically active. A person who is fit both physically and mentally is strong enough to face the ups and downs of life, and is not affected by drastic changes if they take place.

How Can You Become More Physically Fit?

Becoming physically fit requires a change in life style as well. You will have to incorporate a regular exercise routine in your life and also eat healthier.

By avoiding junk foods, fizzy drinks, and by getting adequate amount of rest, you will be able to become physically and mentally fit. Just by eliminating all these food substances from your life, no matter how temporarily, you will allow your body to detox and become stronger.

Make sure that you spend more time outdoors in the sun, and fresh air and take part in more healthy activities. Fishing, bicycling, swimming, hiking, and even playing foot ball should be a part of your physically fit lifestyle.

What Are the Advantages of Being More Active?

By becoming more active, you can increase your body’s fitness levels and also avoid health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure from developing. Exercise is also good for your joints and makes your body stronger overall.

Class of 2016 approving of our school goals and achievements!

An iPad Evening Orientation Meeting with Parents last Tuesday, May 17, 2016 & Middle School Session with Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8th Classes on Wednesday, May 18, 2016

We are grateful for Miss Walden, Mr. Kiladjian, Mr. Barker, Mrs. Samija, and Mr. Broersma for facilitating our parents’ meeting last Tuesday. They joined our 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade parents and shared with them the educational apps used in their classroom teaching. The school learned about our parents' concerns and preparedness related to homework, student penmanship, acceptable use policy, the required eBooks, and the specific iPad tech gadget to purchase for SY 2016-2017. eBook codes for Middle School subjects will be given to each student in the Fall. Mrs. Josie Alejo, who works at LAUSD, Los Angeles Unified School District, also recommended for us to think about and plan to have the lower grades’ use of iPads (in carts). Despite the easy use of iPads, it was agreed that each child’s homework should be copied on each individual planner.

Indeed, the more productive and successful meeting was the session with Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 classes! There were three parts to complete the session.

Part 1 - A panel of our Middle School teachers' sharing of educational apps that proved to be thriving in the classroom teaching and learning process

Page 12: 90 Years of Excellence Established 9.14.1925 www ...hfgsglendale.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Newsletter-5.28.2016.pdf · Saguin, and Miss Annie Kojayan. Mrs. Megan Nelson has served

Part 2 - Grouping the students by having one student from each grade level and sharing various tasks

A. Showing the downloaded eBooks and used in every subject for the entire academic year B. Sharing some favorite apps to complete a school project or homework with the group

C. Mentoring a 5th grader (and the others) on the most valuable and efficient style of organizing notes on their iPads by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students D. Providing reminders on respect and integrity

Miss Phillips and her 5th grade students were very enthusiastic. There is high optimism to prepare our 5th graders’ iPad maximum learning and utilization starting next school year. More importantly, noted was the essential call for all students to commit themselves to become responsible in their use of the gadget. Part 3 - The sharing of the school’s acceptable use policy of the iPad Technology program and digital citizenship.
