9 GCSE and IGCSE (Subject availability)

1 Key dates GCSE examinations are normally held in the June examination series. GCSE English examinations are also available in the November examination series. GCSE 360Science units are available in the November, March and June examination series. GCSE Mathematics (New) Two Tier 2381 units are available in the November, March and

June examination series. GCSE Mathematics 2540 and 2544 Two Tier with coursework (final re-sit opportunity)

examinations are available in the November examination series only. Applied GCSE (Double Award) examinations are normally held in January and June. Portfolio

moderation will take place in May only (see part 1.3). IGCSE examinations are normally held in the June examination series with limited subject

availability in the November examination series.

Important: In response to feedback from centres, the deadline for the March entries (following the release of the November results) is now 28 January 2009. Similarly, in response to feedback from centres, there will be a window for June 2009 re-sit entries following the release of the March 2009 360Science and Two Tier Mathematics unit results on 16 April 2009. Late fees will be withheld on re-sit entries made during the ‘window’ period of 16—30 April 2009. Please note that this window will apply to 360Science and Two Tier Mathematics unit re-sit entries only. Following the closure of the window, late fee invoices will be issued. The entry deadline for new entries for these subjects remains 21 February 2009.

Examination centres should select from the specifications listed below, ensuring that the correct option code is selected. Codes prefixed with F represent Foundation tier; those prefixed with H represent Higher tier.

Entry deadlines may be found in part 1.1 of this section. Coursework and transferred coursework options are not available to international private

centre candidates, or to private candidates within the UK. International private candidate centres and private candidates within the UK must select the Written Alternative option available.

GCSE 360 Physics 2109 Entries must be made for each unit the candidate intends to offer in the June 2009 examination series by entering the appropriate unit code (eg 5044). (Foundation tier and Higher tier). Centres are not required to indicate the tier of entry as each multiple choice paper will contain questions on both tiers of entry and centres may decide nearer the time, or even on the day of the examination, which tier is appropriate for each candidate. The answer sheet will permit responses from either tier of the test. Each multiple choice paper will contain 40 questions. The Foundation tier candidates must be instructed to answer questions 1-24 and the Higher tier candidates must be instructed to answer questions 17-40 on the answer sheet provided (covering all 40 questions).

Please note that:

a candidate does not have to sit the same tier for each of the tiered units. For example, a candidate could sit Higher tier for unit 5045 and Foundation tier for unit 5048

where the externally assessed units need to be repeated in order to claim a further qualification award, the candidates must enter using the appropriate codes (eg, the entry code for the P1a unit test contributing to GCSE Science will be 5009 whereas the entry code for the P1a unit test contributing to GCSE Physics will be 5045)

candidates do not have to re-enter for internally assessed units if they wish to claim a further qualification award even if it does have a different title, after having claimed one award that used the unit scores

candidates may cash-in for qualification awards in GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science, GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and/or GCSE Physics in the same examination series provided they have completed the appropriate units

9.1 Alphabetical list of specification and option codes Notes

Examination centres should select from the specifications listed below, ensuring that the correct option code is selected. Codes prefixed with F represent Foundation tier; those prefixed with H represent Higher tier.

Entry deadlines may be found in part 1.1 of this section. Coursework and transferred coursework options are not available to international

private centre candidates, or to private candidates within the UK. International private candidate centres and private candidates within the UK must select the Written Alternative option available.

UK centres who submit IGCSE entries should be aware that, as an international qualification, some examinations may be timetabled on UK public holidays.

Candidates should be entered for IGCSEs using the same candidate number as any GCSE including Applied GCSE entries.

Examination results and the despatch of examination certificates will be in line with those for GCSE examinations.
