Office of Short-Term Rentals Issues New Enforcement Notices &
Fines against Violators of City’s Short-Term Rental Laws Nearly $155,000 in penalties this month assessed against multiple properties as part of
ongoing enforcement effort of recently-amended regulations
San Francisco, CA -- The City’s Office of Short Term Rental Administration & Enforcement (OSTR) announced
today, in partnership with the Planning Department and the Building Inspection Department, that it has issued
another round of decision letters to property owners who have violated the City’s recently-amended short term
rental laws. The office moved forward with three more cases issuing final decisions by a hearing officer that
resulted in nearly $100,000 in fines against multiple properties. The registration of properties, as well as
investigations and enforcement actions, will continue as the core objective of Office of Short-Term Rentals.
“As with the first wave of penalties, we continue to send a message to those who violate our short-term rental laws
that we will investigate and hold you accountable,” said Kevin Guy, Director of the Office of Short Term Rental
Administration & Enforcement. “I want to express my appreciation to the coordinated effort between many city
agencies, especially the Planning Department Enforcement Team. If you are eligible to share your home, we will
help you register, however, if you break the law and contribute to our City’s housing crisis, we will continue to be
vigilant with our enforcement and, if appropriate, issue fines and penalties.”
“I’m pleased that the new Office of Short-Term Rentals has moved quickly in just a few weeks of existence to levy
fines and boost enforcement efforts,” said City Administrator Naomi Kelly. “Mr. Guy is building on the strong
foundation for registration and enforcement set by the Planning Department and their outstanding staff. The Office
of Short-Term Rentals will continue to initiate enforcement against those who flout our regulations and work to
register even more law-abiding residents who want to rent out their home or spare room on a short-term basis.”
The Director of the Office of Short-Term Rental Administration and Enforcement serves under the City
Administrator’s Office. Kevin Guy is leading the registration and enforcement efforts by investigating alleged
violations and imposing fines as required under the City’s current short-term rental regulations. As of February 1,
2015, San Franciscans may legally rent their primary residential unit for periods of less than 30 nights with a valid
Short-Term Residential Rental Registration, subject to certain rules. The Office of Short Term Rental
Administration and Enforcement is located at 1650 Mission Street.
