TOUCHSCREEN BASED HOME AUTOMATION
Now a days everything go automatic as scientific world provides fresh and
proven technologies. These technologies not only make our life simple but effortless.
Automating a home is great idea for those who are away from their homes and those
who are unable to perform normal human activities caused by any serious disease or
accident. Here comes the advantage of home automation. There are many ways by
which one can do this. GSM technology is used here is because the range it provides is
unbeatable.
The control section consists of a touchscreen and a pc with java program.
When we login to a page using touchscreen. Then by selecting a particular device we
can make that device on, off or can detect the present status of the particular device. By
touching the screen a message will be send to the gsm modem in the home from a
modem in the pc section.
These technologies not only make our life simple but effortless.

BLOCK DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION
In e-Home we are communicating between a cell phone and a GSM
modem which is placed in home. The GSM modem is a device which can do all the
operation of a cell phone but not has speaker and microphone. The SMSs received by
modem from cell phone is transferred to a micro controller and micro controller decides
what to do with that SMS with help of a pre burned algorithm.
AVR micro controller is used here because it is very affordable and easily
Available.PIC gets the SMS sent by user from GSM MODEM via RS232 interface. The
serial data will be undergone several comparisons inside the micro controller and finally
AVR will turn ON or OFF particular device , eg- Fan ,lamp, etc. Since the house hold
devices work in ac only the micro controller output is not directly connected to devices
but through relays.
GSM
GSM for Global System for Mobile. This is the standard most widely used
across the globe for mobile communication. GSM supports both voice and data
communication between terminals. The main feature of GSM compared to its competent
CDMA is the SIM card. The Subscriber Identity Module(SIM) identifies the subscriber
using that cell and make them able make and accept phone calls.
MICROCONTROLLER
The major heart of this project is AVR microcontroller, the reasons why we
selected this in our project?, it has more features like 16bit timer, 10-bit ADC, USART,
SPI, I2C, 256 bytes of EEPROM memory, and 32kbytes of flash program memory, then
at last its speed of program execution is about to 1 microsecond or 10 MIPS (10 Million
Instructions per second), etc. However, compare to other microcontroller it is fast and
very ease to program in C language because of huge support can gain from the
manufacturer for programming. The special IDE offered by the manufacture, it is named
as AVR purpose
MAX 232
The MAX232 is an integrated circuit, first created by Maxim Integrated Products, that
converts signals from an RS-232 serial port to signals suitable for use in TTLcompatible
digital logic circuits. The MAX232 is a dual driver/receiver and typically converts the
RX, TX, CTS and RTS signals.
The drivers provide RS-232 voltage level outputs (approx. ± 7.5 V) from a single + 5 V
supply via on-chip charge pumps and external capacitors. This makes it useful for imple-
menting RS-232 in devices that otherwise do not need any voltages outside the 0 V to
+ 5 V range, as power supply design does not need to be made more complicated just for
driving the RS-232 in this case.
Relay control unit
This unit facilitates the communication of the controller with the home appliance under
surveilance. The switch on and switch off conditions are decided by the controller and
the respective switching action is carried out by the relay section.
