It was a scow built boat kboot 15 feet long and feet wide; but the noyelty condsted in the peouliar motive power, it being towed by dolp. The boat;was accompaniedby but one man-a crp pie from infancy-having no use of his limlbsbelow his knees. He manages to hobble about slowly by walking upon his knees. upon which he wore some- thing similar to shoes. He is from Chicago, and says he is going ti New York for medical trestment. His dogs, of Which toe has six, large and powelfoi animals, are tifalied to.perfection, and undertand and obey his word of command as well as a human being coold. They tow his boat' along at the rate or four miles an hour--he from the boeat giving direc- tions. When they meet a boat, they lay down close and let the lowline pas over them, and thus tlake the inside. He has a wagon on board for overlnd journeys. His bat, an open one, by a canvas cover- ing supported on pois, is converted into a satoon cwhich he and his dogs, together with a tame raccoon, use for parlor,diniug-roomand bed-room, ll together on terms of equality and good will. He carries four ioaded pistols to protect his dogs fromattack. After procuringa etock of provisions for himself and com- panions, he auchored his boat a little way from the shore and attracted the nttention and excited the curiosity of passers-by, who crowded around to solve the mystery. This happy familyreminds one forcibly Sof their old friend Rouinson Crsoe, as being on a pleasant cruise downthe Erie Canal. He pursued his travels early the next morning. [Lockport (N. Y.) Coorler. TOLERATION NOT ALL ON ONE SsEE.-SirJohn Bow- ring found the Siamese very tolerant in religion. Their common remark was, " Your religion is excel- lent for you, and ours is excellent for us. All coun- tries do not produce the same fruits and flowers, and we find various religions suited to various nations." Even the King of 8lam asid to some Christian mis- sionaries: "Persecution is hateful: every man ought to be free to profess the religion he prefers. If yon convert a certain number of people anywhere, let me know it, and I will give them a Christian Governor, and they shallnot be annoyed by Siamese authorities. We cannot tell who is right orwho is wrong, but I will pray my God to give you his blessing, and yon must pray year God to bless me, and so blessings may descend upon both." TERRnnLE.-The Boston Traveler makes the follow- ing reckless attempt at fun: While at the artists exhibition yesterday, our re- porter was standing near Stephenson's bust of Ruth. A friend, pointing to the veiled head of the Jewish maiden, said: "It is not every girl that gets such a beau as (Boaz) she did." The reporter meditated, then smiled, and immediately proposed to expend a couple of shillings for the pun. "Nay, owe me (Naomi,) 'said the wag. Thinking the neighbor hood too warm, the reporterturned to look at Champ. ney's magnificent snow-covered mountains. DYING HARD.-The London (Canada) Free Press gives the following account of the suicide of a Scotch- man named John Ross, whose body was found in the woods near Lobo, on the 1st inst., hanging by the neck from a young sapling : "It appears that the wretched man mustfrst have attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the bowels ive successive times with a small knife. Finding that death did not ensue, he must have proceeded, as shown by the tracks of blood, some yards off, where he out himself in the throat, and made a second gash completely severing his windpipe. Here another poolof blood wasfoaund. He most then have gone, wounded as he was, to a tree, which he climbed, evidently with a view to hanging, but finding it not suitable to his purpose he descended, leaving the tree covered with blood. The blood tracks next showed that he went some little distance off and selecteda young sapling, to which hetied his handkerchief, and throwing himself on his hands and knees, he effectu- ally committed his purpose." LYNoc LAw IN VioINra.-Jefferson Randall, who had been sent from Rockingham county, by a vigi- lance committee for numerous lawless acts, such as burning harns, robberies, and planning the assassins- tion of certainprominent citizens in that county, re- turned there on Friday lasai. He was immediately ar- rested by the vigilance committee and held in cus- tody tosee if he could not be surrendered into the hands of the law on legal proof. Not being able to accomplish that object, the committee, on Tuesday, took him out and hung him ona tree until he was dead. Randallwas a man of extraordinaryphysical strength, and when capturedwas armed with a gun and pistol, but did not offer any resistance tohis cap- tors. Jones, a son-in-law of Randall's, was also in custody of the committee, and was to have been hung yesterday. [Richmond Whig, 12th. GENERAL JAIL DELIVERY. - We learn from a friend, just from Enterprise, that all the prisoners confined in the jail of Lauderdale county, some six in number, broke out on the night of the 9th instant, and have made good their escape. James Smith, D. C. Rawls, and H. Parks, (the latter imprisoned for whipping his wife) who were removed from Qaitman o Marior for safe keeping, are among the "birds who have flown to parts unknown. (Paulding (Miss.) Clarion, 13th. SPIRITUALISM IN EUROPE.-The Tablet, one of the ablest of Catholic journals in Europe, declares that a belief in spirit-rapping is widely extended in Italy. It says: The clergy, it is alleged, are not sufficiently awake to the gravity and importance which this subject de- rives from the unbridled curiosity of the present age -a curiosity which it has been the primary object of modern curiosity to increase. The establishment of these schools of iniquity has been connived at by the Catholic Governments of Italy, and in Sardinia and Lombardy the towns and villages swarm with magne- tizers. THE SPIDER AND TIIE TOAD.-A Curious Inci- dent.-The following singular relation is furnished by a correspondent of the Bostod Traveler, as having been witnessed bya person nowliving, though occur- ring more than forty years ago, about sixteen miles from this city : The narrator said, that while walking in the field he saw a large black field spider, considered of the most venomous species, contending with a common- sized toad. The spider, being very quick in its move- mestls, would get upon the back of the toad and bite it, when the toad, with his fore paw, would drive off the spider. It would then hop to a plantain, which was growing near by, and bite it, and then return to the spider. After seeing this repeated several times, and noticing that each time the toad wasbitten it went to the plantain, the spectator thought he would pull up the plantain and watch the result. He didso. Being again bitten, and the plantain not to be found, the toad soon began to swell and show other indica- tions of being poisoned, and died in a short time. If the plantain, which grows so abundantly near almost every dwelling in this vicinity, was such an imme- diate and effectual remedy to the toad for the bite of the, spider can we not reasonably infer that it would be an ellectual cure for a man for the bite of the same insect. CUT His THnOAT.-On the night of the 8th inst., in New York, a man named O'Neil was attacked by two men in the street, one of whom cut his throat with a knife. The wound inflicted was a dangerous one. CArPTUs or A BRIGAND CHIEP.-A Paris corres- pondent of the London Globe says: I have already alluded to the capture of Roma San- dor, the Brigand Chief of Hungary. This individual, during the patriotic war, rendered good service to the Hungarian cause by the invaluable information he and his band were enabled to obtain of the ene- my's movements through their knowledge of the country. If I am not mistaken he abandoned his vi- cious career and raised a carps of partisans, Itis certain that alter the crisis produced by the treachery of Georgy, and the intatuation of Konuth, he was the instrument in facilitating the escape of many who would otherwise have fallen into the hands of the hangman Haynau. He succeeded in placing the SCountess Guyon, wire of Gen. Guyon, beyond the areachof the enemy, and freely exposed hislife in do- fence of others placed in similar circnumstances. Af- ter the war he resumed his formercareer, and at times has had disciplined forces under his command, with which he has defeated the Austrian troops sent I against him. He neverinjured aHungarian, and alJi Ihis feats have been executed to the prejudice of Aue trians. As usual in such cases, he was betrayedbye Swoman. He visited his most intimate friend, and I while talking with him about a horse he wished tc purchase, the wile of his friend approached from be bind and felled him with a hatchet. Frieudshipcould not resist the temptation of the 850 offered for ha f capture. f CRPS IN SOUTH CAROLLNA. -The Charleston Evening News, of the 12th inst., anys :. Queea tMon or T vrMo.-A somewhat novelcraft came'down the canal on Saturday afternoon andtied up at the doc. It was a scow built boat kboot15 feet long and feet wide; but the noyelty condstedin the peouliar motive power, it being towed by dolp. The boat;was accompanied by but one man-a crppie from infancy-having no use of his limlbs belowhis knees. He manages to hobble about slowly bywalking upon his knees. upon which he wore some-thing similar to shoes. He is from Chicago, and sayshe is going ti New York for medical trestment.

His dogs, of Which toe has six, large and powelfoianimals, are tifalied to.perfection, and undertandand obey his word of command as well as a humanbeing coold. They tow his boat' along at the rate orfour miles an hour--he from the boeat giving direc-tions. When they meet a boat, they lay down closeand let the lowline pas over them, and thus tlakethe inside. He has a wagon on board for overlndjourneys. His bat, an open one, by a canvas cover-ing supported on pois, is converted into a satooncwhich he and his dogs, together with a tame raccoon,

use for parlor, diniug-roomand bed-room, ll togetheron terms of equality and good will. He carries four

ioaded pistols to protect his dogs fromattack. Afterprocuringa etock of provisions for himself and com-panions, he auchored his boat a little way from theshore and attracted the nttention and excited thecuriosity of passers-by, who crowded around to solvethe mystery. This happy familyreminds one forciblySof their old friend Rouinson Crsoe, as being on apleasant cruise down the Erie Canal. He pursued histravels early the next morning.

TOLERATION NOT ALL ON ONE SsEE.-SirJohn Bow-ring found the Siamese very tolerant in religion.Their common remark was, " Your religion is excel-lent for you, and ours is excellent for us. All coun-tries do not produce the same fruits and flowers, andwe find various religions suited to various nations."

Even the King of 8lam asid to some Christian mis-sionaries: "Persecution is hateful: every man oughtto be free to profess the religion he prefers. If yonconvert a certain number of people anywhere, let meknow it, and I will give them a Christian Governor, and they shall not be annoyed by Siamese authorities. We cannot tell who is right orwho is wrong, but Iwill pray my God to give you his blessing, and yonmust pray year God to bless me, and so blessingsmay descend upon both."

TERRnnLE.-The Boston Traveler makes the follow-ing reckless attempt at fun:

While at the artists exhibition yesterday, our re-porter was standing near Stephenson's bust of Ruth.A friend, pointing to the veiled head of the Jewishmaiden, said: "It is not every girl that gets such abeau as (Boaz) she did." The reporter meditated, then smiled, and immediately proposed to expend acouple of shillings for the pun. "Nay, owe me(Naomi,) ' said the wag. Thinking the neighborhood too warm, the reporter turned to look at Champ.ney's magnificent snow-covered mountains.

DYING HARD.-The London (Canada) Free Pressgives the following account of the suicide of a Scotch-man named John Ross, whose body was found in thewoods near Lobo, on the 1st inst., hanging by theneck from a young sapling :

"It appears that the wretched man must frst haveattempted suicide by stabbing himself in the bowelsive successive times with a small knife. Findingthat death did not ensue, he must have proceeded, asshown by the tracks of blood, some yards off, wherehe out himself in the throat, and made a second gashcompletely severing his windpipe. Here anotherpoolof blood wasfoaund. He most then have gone, wounded as he was, to a tree, which he climbed, evidently with a view to hanging, but finding it notsuitable to his purpose he descended, leaving the treecovered with blood. The blood tracks next showedthat he went some little distance off and selectedayoung sapling, to which he tied his handkerchief, andthrowing himself on his hands and knees, he effectu-ally committed his purpose."

LYNoc LAw IN VioINra.-Jefferson Randall, whohad been sent from Rockingham county, by a vigi-lance committee for numerous lawless acts, such asburning harns, robberies, and planning the assassins-tion of certain prominent citizens in that county, re-turned there on Friday lasai. He was immediately ar-rested by the vigilance committee and held in cus-tody to see if he could not be surrendered into thehands of the law on legal proof. Not being able toaccomplish that object, the committee, on Tuesday, took him out and hung him on a tree until he wasdead. Randall was a man of extraordinary physicalstrength, and when captured was armed with a gunand pistol, but did not offer any resistance tohis cap-tors. Jones, a son-in-law of Randall's, was also incustody of the committee, and was to have been hungyesterday. [Richmond Whig, 12th.

James Smith, D.C. Rawls, and H. Parks, (the latter imprisoned forwhipping his wife) who were removed from Qaitmano Marior for safe keeping, are among the "birds

SPIRITUALISM IN EUROPE.-The Tablet, one of theablest of Catholic journals in Europe, declares that abelief in spirit-rapping is widely extended in Italy. It says:

The clergy, it is alleged, are not sufficiently awaketo the gravity and importance which this subject de-rives from the unbridled curiosity of the present age-a curiosity which it has been the primary object ofmodern curiosity to increase. The establishment ofthese schools of iniquity has been connived at by theCatholic Governments of Italy, and in Sardinia andLombardy the towns and villages swarm with magne-tizers.

THE SPIDER AND TIIE TOAD.-A Curious Inci-dent.-The following singular relation is furnished bya correspondent of the Bostod Traveler, as havingbeen witnessed by a person now living, though occur-ring more than forty years ago, about sixteen milesfrom this city :

The narrator said, that while walking in the fieldhe saw a large black field spider, considered of themost venomous species, contending with a common-sized toad. The spider, being very quick in its move-mestls, would get upon the back of the toad and biteit, when the toad, with his fore paw, would drive offthe spider. It would then hop to a plantain, whichwas growing near by, and bite it, and then return tothe spider. After seeing this repeated several times, and noticing that each time the toad was bitten itwent to the plantain, the spectator thought he wouldpull up the plantain and watch the result. He didso.Being again bitten, and the plantain not to be found, the toad soon began to swell and show other indica-tions of being poisoned, and died in a short time. Ifthe plantain, which grows so abundantly near almostevery dwelling in this vicinity, was such an imme-diate and effectual remedy to the toad for the bite ofthe, spider can we not reasonably infer that it would bean ellectual cure for a man for the bite of the sameinsect.

CArPTUs or A BRIGAND CHIEP.-A Paris corres-pondent of the London Globe says:

I have already alluded to the capture of Roma San-dor, the Brigand Chief of Hungary. This individual, during the patriotic war, rendered good service tothe Hungarian cause by the invaluable informationhe and his band were enabled to obtain of the ene-my's movements through their knowledge of thecountry. If I am not mistaken he abandoned his vi-cious career and raised a carps of partisans, Itiscertain that alter the crisis produced by the treacheryof Georgy, and the intatuation of Konuth, he was theinstrument in facilitating the escape of many whowould otherwise have fallen into the hands of thehangman Haynau. He succeeded in placing theSCountess Guyon, wire of Gen. Guyon, beyond theareach of the enemy, and freely exposed his life in do-fence of others placed in similar circnumstances. Af-ter the war he resumed his former career, and at timeshas had disciplined forces under his command, withwhich he has defeated the Austrian troops sentI against him. He neverinjured aHungarian, and alJi

Ihis feats have been executed to the prejudice of Auetrians. As usual in such cases, he was betrayed byeSwoman. He visited his most intimate friend, andI while talking with him about a horse he wished tc
