GREETINGS

It’s hard to believe that RadioMilwaukee has been on the air for five years already. Looking back, we’ve accomplished so many great things in this short time. We’ve highlighted over 500 people and nonprofits through our Community Stories, showcased nearly 100 artists up close and personal at Studio Milwaukee Sessions, discovered over 200 Milwaukee bands through 414 Music, and helped you explore new places in our city through the Passport to Discovery Tour.

With growing listenership and membership, RadioMilwaukee is fostering a more engaged community. Thanks to your support, we’ve become a valued cultural asset by creating diverse programming for our diverse city.

Looking forward, we continue to expand our reach at community events, on-air and online. With your support, we are proud to do our part to strengthen our community and establish Milwaukee as a world-class city with diverse music, art and cultural offerings. Stay tuned in!

Sincerely,

Mary Louise Mussoline Sarah ZimmermanExecutive Director Board Chair

PROGRAMMING

“Where Milwaukee Discovers New Music” isn’t just something we say, it’s how we choose the music we play. We discover new music by scouring the web and industry sources, but we also remind listeners of lost songs we broadcast every day. RadioMilwaukee sounds like no other radio station in our city, and that’s no accident. We know that repetition has

killed many good songs, new and old. Diversity in music is what many of you were seeking when you found us, and why you continue to tune in.

RadioMilwaukee is also pleased to be the home of the award-winning, nationally syndicated show World Café with David Dye. As more and more listeners invest their time and money in our station, we all work harder to broadcast the best music on the radio dial, hosted by people who care as much about what we play as what you hear.

-Mark KeefeProgram Director

“I’ve learned that Milwaukee has a lot more pride than the average person thinks. The neighborhood pride is astounding and hearing all of the local voices from each little pocket of Milwaukee is entertaining and inspiring.”

VOLUNTEERS

As a listener-supported, independent radio station, we rely on dedicated volunteers to expand our reach into the community. Last summer, RadioMilwaukee focused on two major initiatives to get the word out that RadioMilwaukee is the place “Where Milwaukee Discovers New Music.”

During the 2012 Passport to Discovery Tour, 35 volunteers contributed 190 hours from June to September, making 10,500 direct impressions on the public.

As the weather reached new highs, 60 dedicated volunteers withstood the extreme heat for 11 days at Summerfest to distribute 23,000 download cards, spin 8,000 gumballs, and collect 4,000 contest entries.

Beyond our promotional activities in the summer, hundreds of RadioMilwaukee volunteers provide much-needed support during our annual spring and fall fund drives to answer phones and take contributions. We could never achieve fundraising milestones without the selfless giving of their time and talents.

“Radio Milwaukee contributes a kind of community bulletin board that connects music-lovers with great music and Milwaukee-lovers with great ideas, stories and events from throughout the community.”

Kate Bisson

Page 9: 88Nine RadioMilwaukee Annual Report

SOCIAL MEDIA/APP/WEB

RadioMilwaukee was always meant to be more than a radio station. We allocate considerable resources to technology to enrich the listener and user experience.

In 2011, RadioMilwaukee’s website generated over 1.3 million pageviews – 61% of visitors were returning users, and approximately 38% were new users of the site. Visitors to the site came from all over the world including Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

The top visited pages were the playlist with over 365,000 pageviews; the music section with 46,000 pageviews; the event page with 45,000 pageviews; and Community Stories, with 16,000 pageviews.

Mobile use of our site is increasing. In 2011, 10,000 visits came from people using an iPhone and 9,200 from Android users. Close to 3,000 visits came from iPad users. The RadioMilwaukee App 2.0 was released in 2011, and the Android app followed in 2012.

RadioMilwaukee is nationally recognized for its innovative approach to public media, bringing to life the values and ideals of public broadcasting for the digital era by relying on the proven revenue model of public radio (membership, grants and underwriting) and meeting the audience where they are—on the internet, their mobile devices, and in their neighborhoods.
