MUMBAI: Around 88% Indian Institute of

    Technology-Bombay(II T-B) students claim that

they do not study as their professors do not

manage to generate interest in their courses.

While a few teachers are enthusiastic about

teaching, others are not, reveals the second part

of a survey conducted bythe student's magazine

    Insight.

Fed up with criticism about their "poor

performance" compared to previous batches, a

group ofIITians from the current batch hadconducted asurvey on the campus.

The first part of the survey focusing on why

students don't study at IIT-B, published in the

January issue, had revealed that if not put on a

deadline for an assignment, 75% students do not

spend any time on academics. While more than

75% IITians seem to be more interested in

pursuing hobbies, many are hooked on to social

    networking and micro-blogging sites.

The second part of the survey, published in the April issue, focuses on

issues concerning the teaching and learning process in the institute. In

this report, students have included reactions from professors, and also

    made a few observations.

The study says there is scope for improvement among the faculty and

focuses on the need for a centre for effective teaching.

At least 72% students believe the course content is theoretical, lacks in

application and therefore, is not interesting. Many II Tians have sought

a return to blackboard teaching as they believe that showing slides does

not ensure value-addition from the teachers.

The study says that teachers have cited large classes as one of the reasons for "inefficient

teaching". "With a shortage of faculty, the surge in number of students has not given enough time

to the teachers and for the infrastructure to evolve," says the report.

Professors claim that they have to perform two jobs - teach and research. "It is not hard to see

why it is possible that research could be more interesting and teaching could be relegated to being

one of the unpleasant aspects of the job for many professors," says the report. "Unfortunately,

both teaching and research are full-time jobs. Increased focus on one would impact the other,"

says a teacher in the report. Also, 75% of the students feel they can get a decent grade even by

students have also cited examples of teachers who they think are 'cool' and manage to generate

interest in the topics taught in the class.

Devang Khakhar, IIT-B director, says, "We are constantly working on improving the teaching

and learning standards. The senate committee has proposed to set up a centre for effective

teaching and learning. The institute is also making efforts to build new lecture halls to reduce the

class size, and, thus increase interaction between teachers and students."

    Students' observations in the report

    * A centre for pedagogy is crucial for improving overall teaching standards

    * Maintain privacy of marks and grades as public disclosure leads to demotivation

    * Senior faculty can mentor new faculty

    * Encourage professor-student interactions outside lectures

    * Teaching assistants should be trained well before they are allowed to assist a course

    * Continuous evaluation pattern should be followed instead of the 'four days a semester' study

I think the teachers and students should be given some practical problems tosolve. If the things are not challenging enough , bright minds can getdemotivated easily. There are plenty of challenges around if IITs seek themout, they need not be seculed and just stick to prescribed books and labexercises only. Why not each of the Universities in India maintain an openregister where in the people and companies around the universities registerthe problems ,which the University can help to solve. The faculty andstudents should be encouraged to pick out problems from such a registerand comeup with the solutions. Solving real world problems , with their

attendent challenges can motivate sudents in learning an applying knowledgeand will give enough scope for learned faculty to guide the sudents. Thinkabout it, in the end everyone is happy. There is some addition benefits fromUniverisy registers too, people can know the state of our industries and theproblems they are facing and also it can provide inputs to the newenteupenuers about the areas which are calling for attention. We Indians arevery bad at Information Engineering. Information has a great power to bind usall as a unit and keep us united for solving issues and problems.

all the IIT student frustration is due to one cause: the poor sex ratio.. if themale female ratio is made better then there would be more enthusiasm incampus.. more interest in academics etx.. so instead of reserving seats forOBCs/SC/STs one must make sure the female to male ratio is much greaterthan one..then you will notice that the liking for the course would beexponentially increased..

I have interviewed students from IIT for IIM admissions. I have also taught IITstudents in IIMs. Most students from IIT have no interest in their enggsubject. Many of them do not know the basics of engg and are not able tothink through a engg problem. They start preparing for mgmt as soon as theyenter IIT. They are more interested in conducting mgmt festivals and applyingfor summer internships in mgmt schools. The result is that they neither makegood engg nor do they make good managers. Students have to take aninterest in their subject matter and come prepared for the class. Most ofthese people are not internally motivated to study. The faculty members also

loose interest in teaching students who are not interested in studying and donot come prepared to class. The end result is that both sides end up blamingthe other side and students loose out.

The nature of the survey report is not clear. The report should be circulated tothe old IITs and final conclusion should be drawn after obtaining the feedbackfrom them. The system suddenly not changed and the standard of studentalso remained as earlier years. The fact remains that bright student are notstaying in academic field after graduation. The student undergoing P.Hd. fromUSA/UK after IIT not coming back until they are forced to come here. Thesestudents opts for teaching job in IITs and doing excellent job. The studentwith high aptitude are directionless to choose their future and joining IIMS to

the finance fields. India Govt. should find a way to use these brilliant studentsof IITs.

If JEE ismade subjective, only those with sound knowledge and problem solving skillsshall qualify. pl. remeber its not only the answer, its the application andmethod of solving and there can be more than 1 method. there were somereally bright students in IIT, piyush srivastava from IIT-K was such raregem.he was topper always but he never complained about teachers.

The so called by birth superior meritorious, blue blooded elite Brahmanistswho are blaming reservations for the deterioration of quality of students are infact hurting their own reputation as the superior race with higher IQ. Why?Because the higher the reservation, the better should be the quality ofstudents coming out from general category. Because now they have lessernumber of seats available to them, and much tougher competition with eachother. The truth is JEE doesn't prove a single thing. I've seen muggers whoget through the exam by cramming up every possible type of problem thatcan be designed in basic physics and maths. In fact, there may be somekind of corruption going on. Before the 90s, some of the physics questions inJEE mains exam were directly lifted from Russian books like Irodov - word toword same. Some of the students knew that the questions could be directlytaken from this book, and prepared accordingly. How did they come to know

about it? There is something definitely fishy.

This is a very serious matter eventhough we knew it before. The teaching

staff is failed to generate interest in students. hardly 5-10% faculties in IITsand IISERs has a passion for teaching. Apart from there are teachers fromreserved category. They had a moderate success in their career and due toreservation they are now in IIT or IISER as faculties. India need goodteachers who can train the students which is based on merit and ability andnot caste based.

As I am an Engineering graduate from NIT, All I remember during myengineering class that not all but most of the Lecturers/professors do nothave good practical experience related to present industry, they are PHDholders but lack of practical industrial experience, they have not worked evensingle day in a factory or in an engineering project then how come he or shecan teach the engineering subject to the students. Engineering is the

application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in orderto design, build, and maintain structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. It may encompass using insights to conceive, model and scale an appropriate solution to a problem or objective. Theprofessor should focus on practical knowledge commensurate with presentindustry.

A deeper analysis will reveal that it is not the students' fault since they arenot being guided properly. In the last couple of years, I have interacted withstudents not only at the IITs, NITs, management institutes, etc, but also inschools and colleges in rural towns. And everywhere I have found bright kidswho want to do something worthwhile. Being better informed via theelectronic media like cell phones, internet and social networks, they knowwhat exists in the world and want to be a part of it. jobs in IT, banking and other fields. The JEE is a great filtering mechanism.Passing it is no mean achievement because even the faculty of IITs cannotdo it in the time allotted. Thus saying that most of the students whonowadays get into the IITs are zombies is not correct. Yes, the JEE can be

improved by having an extra question paper on languages and an aptitudetest. The reason why the IITs were set up was to create excellent engineersand technologists for India. That basis has failed since the majority of IITgraduates go for non- engineering jobs such as management, banking andcivil services. The teaching in IITs has been deteriorating for the last 20-30years and is quite mediocre, with most of the faculty not up-to- date inengineering research. Research and teaching go hand in hand because theexcitement of new research is then passed on to the students. Since theresearch quality in IITs is much below world standards, the teachers are notable to inspire students. The students therefore look for other challenges andopt for non-engineering jobs. Four years of IIT education is a sufficiently longtime. The fact that only a handful of students who pass out every year opt forengineering or research careers shows that very little of good engineering istaught. The teenaged brain (most IITians are in this age group) needs a hugeamount of inputs to be challenged. Thus the onus is on the teachers toprovide it. And part of that comes by expecting excellence and feedback fromstudents. This can be in the form of regular homework and exciting hands-onprojects which most IIT teachers do not give

The Research is absoulately correct, the technical teaching standard In Indiais very Poor and more theoritical. Whatever is studied in Graduation isseldom used in real work life. Like in Engineering, there are on an average 7-8 subjects in each semester of which only 2 are practical and balancetheoritical. Secondly in mopst of the Engineering colleges, the teaching staffis under qualified and the only reason for comming into teaching as theydon't get job anywhere, so everyone can understand what is the standard ofthese teacher and what would be the standard of the student who come outof these colleges.

Good to see at least IITB taking some interest in making learning moreinteresting whereas other IITs, still, seem to be just drudging along!

Anyways, whenever I think, the root cause of almost every problem tricklesdowns to our useless, corrupt, illiterate or semi literate politicians! Am of theview that a great leader can bring about 180 deg change rather than heard ofilliterates put together. For one, all the money being pumped into real estate, bollywood, cricket, politics or accumulation for fear of personal or familyfuture, must be pumped into R&D or in improvement of almost everything inIndia! We lack almost in every field and everything can be improved a lot!Look at China and even smaller countries like Malaysia or Taiwan! What weneed is very sensible leader who, as first step, starts by getting rid ofcorruption and corrupts first! This is very far fetched dream but at least in

    right direction!

JEE standards have ceratinlylowered compared to the previous models (80's and 90's). 2. 50 % reservation3. Professors are not involved in quality research, not the best scientist joinIIT's, good ones prefer to join centres of excellence such as TIFR etc. 4.Class rooms are much bigger.

    - ,Only a few ( a very few) have the ability to "teach and generate interest" andit is a GOD Gifted Ability! But there are many who are outstanding inacademics IN THEIR TIME but very poor in teaching and articulation! Bulk ofthe teachers are indifferent, unimaginative and in the teaching profession justbecause they HAPPENED TO BE in teaching profession! IITs (contrary topopular myth) have very little to show for itself in quality research on aGLOBAL STANDARD! That is where it should be compared on globalstandard both for its faculty and for its much vaunted alumnus! Except forthat - a good TEACHER can be found EVEN in a poor GOVT school on apoor salary as in any IIT ( or any other global Universities) by the same rarity!I had few (two or three) exceptionally GOOD teachers in my school days(and also later ) who worked on a very poor salary and had extreme ininterest in their st udents!

All Maths, Physics and Chemistry along Engg. subjects taught should havepractical applications and Teacher should explain clearly where & how it isapplied. Similarly Economics, Geology etc all should be taught in the sameway. Engg. subjects should directly cover topics used in respective industry.Follow this strictly and find changes. Not only in IITs ,NITs and other collegesalso should follow it. Application of study material should be 100%.

chapter. The syllabus for next test will not include previous tests/chapters (but the questions are such that the knowledge used in privious chapters aresomehow tested too.). Then take marks from best 5. (iii) Generally in placeof exams, they give a project to a team of 3-4 guys and later take interviewfrom each member individually. (iv) Mechinacal Prof (one of them) does nottake any quiz/test at all. But attendance is mandatory. The students had todesign a Boat. This is a serious problem with most of university staffs in India. These peopleare interested only in their personal growth and preservation of job rather thangrowth of institution. Such people don't demand more facilities or funds which

suites the administration. People who are interested in growth of institutionthey need more facilities and funds which university administration don'thave. I feel this is major reason for our low standard in higher education.

Definitely not. I have been advocating the settingof IIHs (Indian Institute of Humanities) so that those who want to pursue non-engg careers can join an institute with IIT-like facilities and environment. Thenwe at IITs can teach to those who are really interested in science andengineering. 70% of my class in any course is not interested in a career inscience or engineering (this is just my rough estimate). Enjoy the teaching to the most talentedpeople you have with you. Forget about what they will do in future.Neither you nor they have the ability to decide what they will do infuture. I teach a non-engineering subject in IIT Bombay. I get great teaching

evaluation for my elective courses, which have a student strength of not morethan 50. I get not so great evaluation (about 65%) for my core courses, having a student strength of about 350. In my elective course, I engage thestudents; in the big course, I switch to a public speech mode. There I won'tcare if the student is interested, if she/he is getting it, or if she/he is comingto class at all or coming to class only to doze away or read fiction. There Iam interested only in great delivery (to my satisfaction) and order in theclass. I must say also that most faculty, esp. the younger lot, are hardlyinterested in teaching. They are not rewarded for teaching. Not sure if theirresearch is producing any earth-shattering result. And, I must also say, moststudents are also hardly interested in learning. They are tired of studying.Teaching cannot be continuously doing natak in the class to sustain interest. There has to be a desire to learn, and a desire to teach well. Both these areabsent.

About the comment - "75% of the students feel they can get a decent gradeeven by studying a night before the exam". Why is this being taken at facevalue? The students are absolutely over-confident and vainglorious. Secondly, some students say that the course material is theoretical and therefore notinteresting. This is absurd. You need to have sound theoretical foundationsfirst. Later, a teacher can dwell on applications and connect theory topractice or potential unexplored applications. And all of this will take a lot oftime. I think students at IITs have a larger than life image of themselves andlook down upon other people - be it professors, or be it students from non-IITengineering institutions. It's such snobbery, not ineffective teaching, that istheir major problem. Remember that IITs employ professors with excellentteaching and research records, after a thorough screening ofrecommendation letters and lengthy interviews. All the professors have PhDsand post-PhD research/teaching experience. It is unfair to rubbish theaccomplishments and efforts of the IIT professors based on stray commentsfrom students.

Why are we discussing about the future of these IIT students? In any case, more than 80% of them, since the past 50 years, have taken the first flightout of India after graduation, to western countries like the USA & the UK. Thepoor mill workers of Mumbai, the clerks in small offices subisidized theirtuition. The rich industrialists and traders in India, hardly pay any taxes. Theygo to Davos and give lectures to western businessmen, how Indian isShining. And they keep their own workers in poverty, while building a onebillion dollar home, which sucks precious subidized municipal water, to watertheir lawns. What did the mill workers get in return? Joblessness ! And theIIT's are proud to contribute to the western economies and create jobs there.Would the Americans or the British give these untested students a free ridefor an undergrad Engineering degree ? Absolutely not . The professors of IITalso know very well, that 90% of the students will be contributing towards the

American economy, after graduating. Even the govt. of India and the entireworld knows it by now. Very few stay back and start new companies aftergaining work experience, to provide jobs in India. I know the IIT students willblame the govt. mentioning that there is corruption and red tapsim and

bribery in India. Suer there is. Why did they not compalin about all this, whenthey were getting the highly subsidized world class education, virtually forfree? Did they suddenly realize this, after they booked their one way ticket to

America, for the past 50 years ? Hypocrites ! that is what these studentsare. When the intelligentsia deserts the country, after using it's resources, then you have something to say about this character of the students. Betterto give the seats to SC/ST students, who may not score well, but at least willstay back in India, for two reasons. First, they know they may not be able tocope up with the intelligentsia in America. Secondly, they do not have anyfamily connections, to help them out, when they land there. That way at least80% of the graduating engineers stay back, instead of 80% Brahmins leavingthe country. The Brahmins sold the country anyways to the foreign powerswith caste divisions, which the British & the Portuguese & the Mughalsexploited easily. No wonder 99 per cent of the Indian population stood back, when a small pack of mercenaries came walking into the country, about 200years ago. Who will support the one pre cent, when they have suppressedthe remaning 99% for the past 2000 years? The remaining 99 per centthought, that these 0.1 per cent of foreigners may perhaps be better than theone percent brahmins(scums) who ill treated them. And Americans and theBritish and the Europeans know it. That the ruling elite of one per cent willnot gt the support of the remaining 99 per cent of Indians, as they have noreason or stake to do so. That is why Babur and Humayun and Akbar couldalso hold India easily.

The facts, however, are as follows. (1) Less than 16% of IIT graduatesare now going to the US after graduation. (2) The forced drasticincrease in the intake of IIT undergrads has diluted standardsenormously. The very simple arithmetic of relative grading does thisautomatically. (3) In any case, today the over-riding ambition ofstudents (and, significantly, their parents too!) is not a career in R&D(research and development) in the S&T (science and technology)

sector. Rather, it is an MBA followed by an executive job in an MNCor a multinational bank or finance firm. If that doesn't work out, thenan IT job. Don't worry, folks, hard-core engineering and science inIndia will fade out in another 20 years' time; leaving behind only asmall number of really interested and talented "fools" to pursue these.India will THEN make its mark in these areas! I have great faith in theinnate brightness of a small but significant fraction of our youngstudents. They will do wonders when the background noise and dustblows away.

There are problems on both sides - both faculty and students. From facultyside, the problems don't arise because they are bad teachers, but becausethey are bad researchers. To teach interesting stuff, one needs to beperforming cutting edge research themselves. Many IIT professors areunderpaid government slaves whose career prospects have nothing to do withperformance, hence no motivation to strive to excel. On the student side, thefollowing are the problems: 1) Students walk into IIT with a feeling ofgreatness and achievement, and don't realize they are just good performing

high school students picked to learn, and they are only beginning to learninga subject. 2) Students waste too much time with friends and social media, and chasing after opposite sex. Properly learning a technological subjectrequires interest, passion, and devotion. They don't show a fraction of theinterest they have shown in cracking JEE. 3) In most fields, studentseventually go for IT jobs, and hence they have no interest in learning theirfield. Even in CS, students end up working for banks, hedge funds, andwall/dalal street. I hate teaching students knowing their plan is to abandonthe field. Better to teach interested and sincere students who could not crackJEE, than waste technical education on students who have no interest. 4) Ingeneral, Indian students have limited dreams; all they want is a good salary,a wife/husband, and chit chat. They are not burning with desire to either learnthe field, or do something great in life themselves (of courses, exceptionalways exis t).

I am less suprise with this feedback , I feel the IITians aswell as IITprofessors are are not looking into the basics of enggineering .. Why i ammaking complain --reason I do not see these people are generating value tothe society in proportion to cost incurred on them .. the first basic thing needto be done in IIT is to block all porn as well movie download sites .. todiscourage them slow down the internet .. however do not block educationmaterial download ,,.just not trust on slide teaching but have blackboardteaching .,. make the teaching more practical ... for example if you rteaching therodynamics .. ask ur student to priortize chaperts give the

weightage to those chapters .. in ur semester paper .. students shd alsorealize their duty .. respect teachers.. open mind just not on blogging but aswell as in class . . make attendence compulsory.. And last i have greatregards for professor.. they are the people who make us

While the survey is interesting, the sensationalism in the headline againpoints to deplorable standards in journalism. 88% of the students saying thatprofessors do not manage to generate interest in their courses is not thesame as 88% of the students saying that professors are inept! Perhaps, this

journalist needs a course on logical reasoning! As an engineering studentand a recruiter at IITs, I do not like the culture of entitlement that is prevalentat most IITs - a culture that comes from assured placement. It does notbreed excellence, but arrogance. The IIT JEE brings in brilliant students, withunbelievable horsepower - one of the best in the world. The IITs can drawupon the pedagogy techniques of the IIMs - where the focus is on applicationof concepts. If you reserve classroom time for discussions and developmentof projects, I am sure that will build interest. The theoretical concepts can beleft for self-study, with some exceptions. In institutions such as the IITs, witha smart student body and good professors, both parties can sit together andsort this out. That way there will be mutual engagement and joint ownershipof the means to reach the same end goal - excellence at one of the topinstitutions in the country.

Maybe the Indian Professors should spend their time educating FREEEngineering to Slum kids, Online Courses and/or Mobile campuses onwheels. The smart Indian students who get thru rigorous entrance testsshould simply self learn since in theory no one can teach them anyway !! Theprofessors only recommend textbook material, conduct exams to thesestudents. This is a better use of India's tax money.

Simple, lets say you have 100 percent energy and you spend 80percent of that on Lakshmi devi then only rest 20 percent is left forSaraswati devi. Saraswati is about consciousness and Lakshmi isabout inert materials from Earth. Giving shape to these inert materialsfrom earth is known as Art (unfortunately we call this engineering orscience), which is only developed after having your consciousnessuplifted. Bachelors degree is for uplifting consciousness and thosePhD's who volunteer to get into teaching signups for liftingconsciousness of others rather than starting companies as an Artshop. Big hypocrisy is staying in teaching and simultaneouslyrunning companies or being on the board - shear conflict of interest.Human resources dept of the Government is partly responsible for notcoming up with correct law on the teachers, not designing a propercompensation structure that takes into account a retirement benefitwhich will takes care of the professors in a satisfactory way. At last, high inflation scares everybody to do wrong things. So just control

    inflation at any cost.
