President’s Report 2017

As has become the proud tradition at Ipswich Hockey, we wrapped up another successful season and hopefully everyone managed some R & R before diving back into full swing and preparations for the 2018 season. In case you haven’t heard, the ‘icing’ on the 2017 season cake was Ipswich Hockey being named as the Sporting Organisation of the Year at the Annual City of Ipswich Sports Awards. This follows being named as Hockey Queensland’s Association of the Year earlier in the season. Both these prestigious awards are proof we are on the right path and are a reward for all the hard work done by the Ipswich Hockey family. Further successes at these award functions were Mark Eleison being named Hockey Queensland’s Volunteer of the Year and Aaron Gotting the Most Promising Umpire while Leonie Young was named as the Official of the Year at the Ipswich Sports Awards with Robert McLeod a finalist for Volunteer of the Year. As is the case each year, there are so many successes that could be highlighted and which will be mentioned in the various reports, but I would particularly like to acknowledge these:

• the A Grade men’s competition again having four teams,

• our Under 15 boys, under the guidance of Dean Jeffrey, earning promotion back to Division 1 for 2018 after winning the Division 2 State Championship,

• our Under 13 boys Indoor team, coached by Zac Profke, winning their Indoor Challenge,

• the successful hosting of two State Championships, and

• the introduction of our T to 20 program. As mentioned in last year’s report, toward the end of 2016 our Complex Development Committee was formed. The objective of this group is to plan and oversee the continued development, refurbishment and improvement of our complex as a whole, not just the grounds but including the clubhouse and all facilities. This time last year, we were awaiting advice on the outcome of our grant application to install a water pump and tank to improve the efficiency of our watering system for field 1. The talents and hard work of Sam Einam and Troy Hansen (our grant writing gurus) were rewarded and we were successful in securing funding of $35,000 to enable that project to come to fruition. With a dedicated group of volunteers much has been achieved in the past twelve months. We have 2 new shade structures on the mound between the artificial and grass fields and all existing shades are now concreted under, field 1 water cannons were replaced for the start of the season and the booster pump and tank have been installed. The green club storage shed has whirly birds and a handrail was installed in front of the TriDan Shed. We have additional aluminium seating around the complex, new fridges in the bar and a replacement toilet block to service the grass fields is well on its way. I would like to make special mention of Peter Conway, Pat Jordan and Denis Tierney who are the driving force and work horses ‘behind the scenes’ with these projects and whose dedication to Ipswich Hockey is invaluable.

Page 8: 87 Annual Report - assets.sportstg.com · UNIFORM COMMITTEE TROPHY COMMITTEE ... driving force and work horses Zbehind the scenes with these projects and whose dedication to Ipswich

Of course, hand in hand with all our successes go the wonderful and amazing people who make up the Ipswich Hockey family and who have all worked together to achieve the things we have. So a very special and sincere thank you to everyone for the part you have played:

• our dedicated Executive (Janette, Tracey, Mark, Peter, Julie & Paul),

• our Coaching Director (Sam),

• the Umpires Committee (Robert, Pauline & Paul),

• the Technical Committee (Lesley, Lyn, Heater & June),

• the RAP team (in particular Karen, Pauline, Leanne, Tracey, Jan, Lesley, Janette & Heather),

• Jan and her Indoor Committee,

• Barry and his T to 20 team,

• our Rep coaches, managers & players,

• club officials, to our amazing volunteers and to our players. The contribution each and every one of you makes and the passion and dedication you show to our great sport is appreciated and the reason Ipswich Hockey is successful. Looking ahead to the 2018 season, as I announced prior to Christmas, I have not nominated for the President’s position this year. After six years in the role, when I ‘temporarily’ took over from John’s 35 years as President, I believe the time is right for change. While I am extremely proud of what has been achieved in my six years as President, I also acknowledge it is time for fresh faces and new ideas (and maybe a new direction). Listening as I walk around the fields each weekend last year, I know there are great people with fantastic ideas and suggestions for how Ipswich Hockey can become even stronger and more successful who will do a great job taking Ipswich Hockey forward. I am certainly not going to be walking away altogether as I know only too well that volunteers are difficult to find and will certainly help where I can, especially as part of the Rap Team and as Past President to assist the new president transition into the role. Although it is repeating sentiments expressed in last year’s report, I think the following quote is even more relevant now as we look to some new faces in our Executive: You can have change without improvement . . . . but you can’t have improvement without change. And the most effective way to cope with change is to help create it! Thank you to everyone for their support and encouragement over the last six years and best wishes for the 2018 season.

Senior Vice-President’s Report

2018 Season

It is with regret that I have decided not to nominate for the position of Senior Vice President for the 2018 season. I feel I have not had the support from certain members of our association this season and without this support the position becomes even harder than it already is. The following comments are not directed at any one person or persons, it is simply my view of our 2017 season. I strongly believe that our association needs to take a stance against players, coaches and supporters who think they are bigger than the game and can say and do whatever they like without reprimand. I believe if something is not done we will not get any new volunteers and we will certainly not keep the ones we now have. I would also like to remind all members that people who volunteer for positions in our association are very rarely fully qualified for jobs they take on. A little understanding and less criticism goes a long way towards supporting these volunteers to learn and grow in the position they have volunteered to do. On a lighter note, thank you once again to the executive. I have enjoyed working with all of you over the past 3 years and I would like to wish any new members all the best for the 2018 season. I would like to mention a special thank you to Julie Eleison for all the help she gave me while Margret was on holidays. Thanks Julie and also Lyn Brown for being my personal secretary and to my family for helping me and supporting me (putting up with me) over the last 3 years. On a lighter note, thank you once again to the executive. I have enjoyed working with all of you over the Yours in hockey Janette Howells

Secretary’s Report 2017 Association: A group of people joined together for a common purpose - in this instance for the playing and enjoyment of hockey. This would include but not be limited to, the Executive, Club Personnel, players and spectators. Volunteer: Someone who works without being paid. This would include but not be limited to, the Executive, Club Personnel, Tech Officials, Umpire Committee, RAP Team coordinator, Indoor coordinator and our Records Secretary and Team. Employee: A paid worker. That is, Bar and Canteen staff, Umpires and Regional Coaching Director. I thought it was timely to remind people of how the Association is run and by whom. Many of the people who assist in the running of the Association are VOLUNTEERS. These volunteers spend countless hours away from their families and many also have paid employment, whether that is full-time or part-time. They have families – husband, wives, children and grandchildren. These volunteers ensure that players have a game each week to play (excluding byes), food and beverages available (someone needs to be at the grounds to have items delivered), umpires at our games and funds available to upgrade our facilities. Volunteers also ensure if necessary, a Technical Official is at the game, they run your judiciary processes, ensure trophies are organized, uniforms in place and they also obtain up to date information from Hockey Queensland. They are first and last on premises, repair damaged items and also mow the lawns. These are only some of the duties that our Volunteers provide. Volunteers do not always know every aspect of the game however they do their best. I for one do not know every by-law and every rule that hockey require. I have always been up front and refer to my counterparts, whether that is the President, Senior Vice-President or the Records Secretary. On numerous occasions I have also referred to Club Presidents and Secretaries. I believe we need to start respecting and appreciating our volunteers and employees of the Association. We are all entitled to an opinion, it is the delivery, the when and where this opinion is given that matters. If a decision does not go our way, we need to accept the decision and move on. We do not need to utilise social media and/or verbalise our opinions in front of everyone. You will find that many members have family that play, umpire or work at the Association. We can take things personally because we care. I believe if we keep critising our Volunteers, we will be left with very little volunteers and then we need to think, will we still have an Association. After 11 years as Assistant Treasurer and also 2 years as Secretary, I will not be nominating in 2018. However I encourage everyone to volunteer and do their part for the Association. Remember: before you critise – “Have you volunteered yet?” Julie Eleison Secretary

Treasurer’s Report for 2017

Madam President, Ladies & Gentlemen,  I  am  pleased  to  present  the  Financial  Statements  of  the  Association  for  the  year  ended  30 November 2017.  The  profit  for  the  year  was  $7,552  as  compared  with  the  2016  result  of  $27,359.  The  2017 revenue was similar to 2016, with expenditure slightly higher, mainly due to depreciation being about  10% higher  than  the previous  year. During  the  year,  funds were  spent  on  replacing  the cannons on  field 1,  some  further  seating around  fields 1 & 2,  and  some very  important  shade structures  were  added  to  the  complex.  These  expenditures  were  the  main  reason  for  the increase in depreciation for the year.   The net result  from the bar and canteen operations was also higher  in 2017 as compared with 2016 mainly as a result of higher bar and canteen takings due to the Secondary School Girls and the Under 15 Girls state titles being held in Ipswich during the year.  Our  Balance  Sheet  remains  strong,  which  allowed  us  to  continue  to  look  at  opportunities  to improve our  facility  during  the  year. Our  current  turf  supplier,  STI,  conducted  a  review of  our artificial surfaces during the year, and passed some positive comments on the condition of our turfs  given  their  age. We  do  have  some  funds  set  aside  for  this  replacement  when  the  need arises.  I would like to thank your Assistant Treasurer, Julie Eleison for her continued valuable assistance during  2017.    I  would  also  again  like  to  acknowledge  John & Una  Cushing who  assisted  us  in various receipting and banking of funds during the year.

RAP Team Co-ordinator’s Report 2017

Six years in and the RAP team is a part of the furniture at Ipswich Hockey. But, like all furniture, sometimes they need replacing and new furniture bought in to “spruce the place up”. But before that happens, I need to let you know how proud I am of all that this small group of volunteers has achieved in this time. Our annual events that bring so many smiles:

• Open day where we get to show off our great club volunteers with our come n try activities put

together by our dedicated RCD,

• Our community fundraising weekend – where we have such colourful and generous support.

2017 had us donate $2000 towards the Starlight Foundation, and the sale of purple nail polish

increased!

• Our Hook in2 Hockey Theme day – this year we went “Out of this world “ where we had some

awesome costumes and fun activities

• Junior carnival day and Gala Awards dinner finished off a great season.

• Of course IHA also hosted several State Championships and we helped clubs and junior rep

teams fundraise with our Saturday morning BBQS

The focus of the RAP team has always been about providing a fun, family friendly environment to help us attract and keep new players particularly juniors. However we have always tried to ensure that we can do things for our adults as well. In 2017 our T to 20 was designed to help our older junior player’s transition into senior grades. Those players that were involved improved their skills and confidence and we sincerely thank Barry Westphal and his team who drove this program. We are trying something new in 2018 with a planned 9 a side one day competition that perhaps could become another annual event on the IHA calendar. To make these things happens as successfully as they do, there is the wonderful group that makes up our RAP team – the majority being involved since the team first formed. A huge THANK YOU to Margret, Jan, Leanne, Pauline, Lesley, Tracey, Heather, Janette, Barry and Sam. However without the support of the Clubs committees and their members, we would not be able to have been as successful as we have. So THANK YOU to so many of you who have jumped in and helped out throughout the year. To all our IHA members, whether players, officials or volunteers who have been recognised for their achievements in 2017, I congratulate you all for your dedication and commitment to Hockey. I started volunteering firstly with Bellbowrie Hockey and then moved into working with the IHA team and instigated the creation of our RAP team. My volunteering started over 10 years ago, just so that I could learn more about a sport I had no idea about , and enjoyed it so much I wanted to give others the opportunity that my children were given over the years by dedicated club and IHA personnel. I believe that our RAP team has successfully achieved RECRUITMENT, ADVANCEMENT & PROMOTION but I personally have learnt so much, made some lifelong friends, have enjoyed working with our sponsors, and other associations in the many different things that happen each and every year. It is time for new ideas and new opportunities for our RAP team……I will continue to be involved with the team, but believe a new Co-ordinator – a new face of the RAP team - is necessary for 2018.

Thank you so much and Good Luck to all for 2018. Karen

Indoor Co-ordinator’s Report 2017

Our Indoor competitions are up and running at full capacity. We have 20 junior teams and 8 senior teams. All teams are fully stocked with players and we have a waiting list as well. The popularity is encouraging. We have 241 registered players this year, including 37 who were not registered for outdoor in 2017. We have 17 regular junior umpires and 8 regular senior umpires. We sent five junior teams away to State Team Challenges. The players and officials did us all very proud and performed well. We had teams represented in the U15 boys and girls and the U13 boys and girls. The U15 girls had a tough competition but finished with a win to be 7 of 8 in Div 1; the U15 boys finished 6 of 7 in Div 1; the U13 boys are State Champions! And our U13 girls no 1 team finished 7 of 9 in Div 1 and our development no 2 team finished 7 of 9 in Div 2. We also had representatives playing in the Men’s Opens and U18s and the Women’s Opens and U18 competitions but not under the” Ipswich” banner. A number of players have also been selected to play in Qld teams in the Festival of Indoor hockey in Goulburn in January. Women Open - Eden Jacket; U18 Emily Witheyman-Crump, Shadow Jade McDougall; U15 Talicia Canty (Player of the tournament) and Victoria Heffernan; U13 Caitlin Canty and Katie George. Men Open Adam McClelland; U21 Kai Douglas and Bailey Hoyland-Meaker, Shadow Ryan Smith; U18 Zac Profke; U15 Matthew West; U13 Daimon Bell and Riley Profke, Shadows Lachlan (Archie) Cameron and Rhys Stenzel. Some listed do not play Indoor at Ipswich but do play outdoor at Ipswich. Congratulations to all players! We had a number of umpires go away for Ipswich as well. U13s Zack Eleison, Lachlan Pomerenke and Natalie Walker; U15s Zac Profke and Natalie Walker; U18 boys Natalie Walker. Natalie umpired the Div 1 final for both the U18 Boys and U15 girls. Zac Profke received Level 1 Indoor umpire badge. Next year we would love to have more umpires go away with teams. It is a great experience. Natalie Walker went to National Festival of Indoor Hockey again with U13 Girls. Well done everyone! The current ladder as of January 18th 2018:

IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2017

Season 2017 has been very busy for Ipswich Hockey Association; many achievements have been made by the association, hockey community and our athletes which sets us up for an exciting 2018 season. The 2017 season has seen another strong participation level in Hook in2 Hockey U5, U7 & U9s with our numbers sitting in the 190’s again; we are looking to grow these numbers during the 2018 season. A big thank-you to all the clubs Hook in2 Hockey coaching staff, especially our juniors who are getting involved, who are teaching and inspiring our future stars of the game how to play but more importantly how to have fun playing the game. It was great to see Collegians and Swifts have Hook in2 Hockey teams, this is exciting and even better for these 2 clubs as they are growing their depth. Once again it has been great to walk the fields on a Saturday morning and see the children and the coaches learning new skills and having so much FUN!! Towards the latter half of the U9 season we again introduced our junior umpires with a strong focus on the basic rules of Feet, Height of the Stick, and the number of players in the tackle. With this introduction, it allowed the coaches to focus on coaching the children and getting them to use all the field (width) and the skills that they had learnt in the first half of the season. The skills that have come from the new Hook into2 Hockey program that was introduced by Hockey Australia, although the skills covered were very similar to the skills that we introduce in the 2016 season it provided more game base learning, for example Hoctopus & fruit salad, whilst the children were having fun playing the games they forgot that they were learning new skills. Thank you to Umpiring Committee for making sure that we had umpires each week and giving our young up and coming umpires the opportunities to gain confidence and learn more rules and about themselves as umpires. It was great to see many of our junior umpires participate in umpire coaching sessions on a Saturday morning with Pauline Alchin, Bernie Gotting and Robert McLeod. A big thank you to Karen Dolan, Tracey Doyle and the RAP Team for all their time and hard work that went into Hin2H Theme day for all of the U5, 7 & 9 children. Hin2H Theme day was “Ipswich Hockey goes OUT OF THE WORLD”. It was excellent to see so many children and coaches dress up as their favourite OUT OF THIS WORLD character and play games, have photos in Space and enjoy the atmosphere of Theme Day. With our U9 numbers even stronger from the 2016 season we had a great year with E Grade, giving many of our U9 boys the opportunity to play up in the E Grade Competition and learn some new skills and make some new friends. It has proved to be successful and certainly allowed the young boys the opportunity to grow as players and expand our junior player base. This was reflective at the U11 Coulter Shield Carnival where we were able to take 3 boys teams to compete, from last year when we only had 2 teams. With these strong numbers for both boys and girls in E Grade and U9s Hin2H this will help to strengthen the numbers in the E, D, & C Grades for the 2018 season. Hopefully this will enable the clubs that were light on in the higher junior grades to be able to fill their teams once again. It was fantastic to see & C Grade boys and girls have opportunities to play up and gain some experience in the senior grades, this exposure was / is very valuable for all the athletes and is a step in the right direction for the clubs and Ipswich hockey.

2017 saw Hancock Brothers Men and Wests Women win the A Grade finals with Wests (men) and Hancocks (women) being runners up. Congratulations to all the clubs that played in finals and we look forward to seeing you all play again in the 2018 season. It was excellent to have the return of Easts to A Grade men’s competition, pushing the fixture rounds back to a little normality. Their return is a credit to the East club who did exceptional amounts of work to get a team back together and be competitive throughout the season. I’d also like to congratulate Wests A Grade men on making the Grand Final but for all of their hard work in rebuilding the team and allowing so many juniors to be exposed to first grade hockey throughout the season, congratulations and we look forward to you be just as competitive again in the 2018 season. We hosted an array of hockey in the 2017 U19 QLD School Girls Championships, Southern Cross U13 Girls, QLD U15 Girls State Championships. A very big thank you goes out to all of the volunteers that worked tirelessly during these tournaments that we hosted, without you we would not have been so very successful.

Congratulations and thank you to all Coaches, Managers, and Selectors on a successful season not just for Rep teams but club teams also, your hard work and dedication to our athletes is greatly appreciated and without people like you there would be no future for our athletes. I look forward to working with you all again in the 2018 season. 2017 was a very busy season for everyone and many of the athletes expressing that they were

exhausted and in need of a break, this was apparent based on the numbers for Festival of Hockey for

our senior group. Even more so based on the fact invitations were sent out to the younger athletes and

very few attended development sessions.

Development training from the end of the fixture rounds was based around those that were selected in

the QLD U18 / U15 and U16 Southern Emerging athletes, along with those athletes that are

transitioning from U13 to U15s. Limited development training was conducted due to the lack of

interest, and the fact that the athletes are playing more hockey now than they were previously.

Reflecting on the 2017 Season; Ipswich Hockey Community have once again achieved many great things, athletes of all ages have excelled through hard work and dedication in representing at all levels, volunteers being recognised for their outstanding dedication, hosting QLD and School championships, conducting once again one of the largest Hook in2 Hockey Seasons, growth in participation numbers, sporting schools participation, upgrades to the facilities, this list goes on. I have been lucky enough to get to most of the State Championships and watch our teams play, it’s a real honour to wear the Ipswich Uniform and see our athletes also wear it with pride. There are so many highlights from the rep / club season that would be awesome to tell you however some exciting highlights were being able to give all athletes an opportunity to play rep not just for Ipswich but for other regions, some of those athletes had very successful trips away, taking 107 U11 Boys and Girls to Downey Park for Southern Cross / Coulter Shield. Seeing even more athletes, junior and senior nominate that would not normally nominate. This was exciting to have our number increase but also the teaching element that they need to work hard for a position on the team. As you would have read earlier in my report the list of athletes that had the privilege and honour to pull on the Maroon and represent QLD, and to know that our youngest was 12 and the oldest well let’s just say is in the 75+ age group and going strong. Congratulations to you all.

With a changing of Executive Committee, I think that it’s a timely reminder to all that you need to have a step back and really appreciate all that the members of the executive committee do to keep our great association running. Without them we would not have a functioning association, so please if there is something that you feel isn’t working do not whinge about, bring a solution to the meeting and a willingness to be involved and put that solution into practice. From an RCD prospective I’m ever grateful to the committee and I will truly miss those that are stepping down but not away, from me to you thank you so very much for all of your guidance and support I have greatly appreciated it and know that there will be times I will use my speed dial and ring for assistance. However; we must look to 2018 and know that there are exciting times are ahead for Ipswich Hockey Association, I believe that our year is going to be filled with many achievements big and small and lots of FUN for everyone.

Yours in Hockey Sam Spry RCD IHA

Umpire’s President Report 2017

A new era has dawned on Ipswich Hockey with the introduction of wireless communication. Between umpires, this has put our top umpires in good stead when they participate at State and National level. While on the local level it has made umpiring easier to assist and communicate with each other. Congratulations go to Leonie Young who has maintained her place on the National U/18 umpiring panel,

to Zoe Fox who has been upgraded to the U/15 panel. Also to Aaron Gotting who has been selected to

the AHL open panel and umpired at this level at Perth and was invited to participate at the Johor Cup in

Malaysia. Aaron was awarded the most promising umpire for 2017 by HQ and to Abby Eleison who was

awarded the Heather Scragg Trophy for the young aspiring female umpire.

And also to Mark Eleison who was awarded two finals at the Men’s National Masters at Hobart and the

recognition by Hockey Queensland, who awarded Mark the Volunteer of the Year.

Huge congratulations must go to all the umpires who received recognition, graded or who received

upgrades to their existing level. Well done to all. Recognition to Abby Eleison, Zac Profke, Mark Eleison,

Brent Kinnane, Hayden Michel, Luke Hayley, Kyle Jackson, Jessica Fox, Zoe Fox, Ashley Spry, Robert

Lewis and Natalie Walker who all umpired finals at State and National levels.

Once again many thanks to Bernadette Gotting for her untiring work with our junior clinic and with the

junior umpires. Also to all you people who gave up your Saturday mornings to mentor and assist with

the junior umpires.

Although the loss of some of our senior personnel, which made life extremely difficult at times and very

hard to cover, we were gifted to see two of our junior umpires go all the way through the season and

were awarded the E grade Girls Grand Final. Well done Serina and Lachlan.

I would like to congratulate Ipswich Hockey on being awarded Association of the Year by Hockey

Queensland and the double of being awarded the Sporting Association of 2017 by the Ipswich City

Council. These awards could not have been achieved without the help given by countless number of

people who give up their valuable time so generously. Congratulations also to Leonie Young, Hayden

Michel and Kath Anderson for their recognition by the Ipswich City Council at their Sports Gala Night.

In closing it would be remiss of me not to thank the Umpire’s Secretary, Pauline Alchin, who took on the

extra work load without complaint, which made my role so much easier.

Please take the time to read my report and appreciate the accomplishments and hopefully we will see

you all at hockey again.

During the 2017 Season we once again were able to have three separate grades for the junior boy’s competition. However, this is still a work in progress and needs to be monitored to ensure that we can continue the three grades into the future. Yet again this past season has seen co-operation between Clubs, which lead to maintaining team numbers for mainly the C Grade competition in both the boys and girls. To all Clubs involved I offer my sincere thanks for your continuing support. This past year saw the Combined Competition with Toowoomba for A Grade teams continue and offered that extra bit of variety for all teams involved. Ipswich was successful in winning the Women’s Combined Competition, whilst the Men’s trophy went to Toowoomba. The Hook in2Hockey program continues to be a well-received program and our numbers are steady. May these little ones continue into the junior competition in the years ahead. As we move forward it is hoped that all will remember that each Committee in place is there is to do a job and those within these Committees are there supporting the Ipswich Hockey Association. Our aim should always be to support all members and provide a fair and just service to each and every member of Ipswich Hockey Association for the advancement of hockey in general.

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.” – Helen Keller. The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships As an Association we continue to send teams away to all State Championships and these attendances allow our players to compete at that higher level. Which in turn can only assist with their development. Our success this year was to see the Under 15 Boys winner the Division 2 State Championship. A wonderful achievement for all involved. This past season we again saw a number of our mature players selected in State teams, which is very pleasing. Our teams finished as follows:-
