LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONTEXTOF ‘THE LETTER’

Over the past 12-18 months there have been manyletters written and distributed making allegations of

misconduct against certain Elected Members aswell as a variety of other people.

The letters also contained other writings that could bedescribed as “hate speech”.

At the council meeting on 19th August 2014 the followingrecommendation was put to council:

That Council’s solicitors be engaged to instigate legalproceedings against Mr B Trueman, pursuant to Sections254, 255, 256 and 257 of the Local Government Act, toresolve this unsightly condition at allotment XXX, VolumeXXX Folio XXX, Coober Pedy.

Despite the fact that, in my opinion, I agree that theproperty is unsightly, I don’t particularly mind the“unsightliness” of many Coober Pedy properties because,it demonstrates a greater degree of freedom than mostother places in Australia don’t enjoy.

It concerned me that a recommendation had been receivedby council that targeted one single property and not allproperties that could be described as “unsightly.”I decidedto investigate the matter further before making myjudgement in regards to the recommendation.

By Steve Staines

My investigations revealed (via photographs sent to meby an authorised officer) that the property in questionwas indeed “unsightly”. It also revealed that the propertywas not near the main street and was well away from anyretail shops or businesses. My investigations also revealedthat, according to whom I spoke, a few years ago manyprivate property owners with “unsightly properties” hadbeen sent letters by Council to clean up their properties. Some of the property owners complied and some of themcompletely ignored the letter. What is most relevant thoughis that apparently Council did not commence legalproceedings against any of those that ignored the letter.

Why should this property be treated any differently? It ismy belief that all residents of Coober Pedy, and the restof the World for that matter, should be treated equallyregardless of race, religion, gender, sexuality, skin colour, national origin, ethnicity, or disability (i.e. physical orpsychological condition).

I am also an uncompromising supporter of the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights, Article 19 of which states:Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion andexpression; this right includes freedom to hold opinionswithout interference and to seek, receive and impartinformation and ideas through any media and regardlessof frontiers. However, in my opinion, the world is rarelyblack and white but shades of grey. Freedom of expressionshould and is subject to limitations such as libel, slander,

obscenity and/or incitement to commit a crime

“Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a freegovernment; when this support is taken away, theconstitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny iserected on its ruins.” -FRANKLIN, Benjamin (1706-1790)

I do not believe you can sacrifice one right of freedomfor another. So I will defend anyone’s freedom of speechto say what they wish (within reason) but will notnecessarily agree with what they may say.

So with all of that in mind, I made my judgement not tosupport the motion to pursue legal action against the saidowner of the unsightly property. 3 councillors voted forthe motion and 3 voted against. Mayor Baines had thecasting vote and he voted against the motion and thereforethe motion was lost.

I went to a friend’s house after the meeting and hepresented me with “the letter”. It was the first time I hadread it. I was disturbed by its contents and angered thatmy name was mentioned within it. But I was confidentthat this letter would end up where the others have endedup – in the bin - and consequently relegated to a badmemory.

This is where it would have ended except for Facebookand those who copied and distributed the letter further.

Coober Pedy is Australia’s real ‘DownUnder’, famous for its fabulous opals and bizarresubterranean homes. For generations, minershave dug into the white and orange rock to extractthe valuable, sparkling stone. The tunnels andchambers were converted into undergroundshomes in order to escape from the desert heat.

Coober Pedy ‘evolved’ as the result ofa massive post war Opal Rush where hardypioneers developed a make or break preciousgem industry in the desert terrain.

One Facebook user typed the entire letter on a post word-for-word. Another Facebook user insinuated that thenames of those mentioned were the author’s “followers”and encouraged people not to vote for the people mentionedin the letter in the upcoming election. Countless Facebookusers liked and/or commented and/or reposted the re-typedletter as well as other posts related to the letter. Thecontents of the letter went viral. The actions of theseFacebook users and others have arguably caused morefinancial and/or emotional harm than the original letter.

If the original recommendation regarding Mr Trueman’sproperty came to council again today would I vote anydifferently? No. Why? Because I believe the powers ofCouncil should not be used in a manner that may be seenas discriminatory.

Was the recommendation related to the letter(s)? I don’tknow but it could easily be perceived that way and, basedon my understanding of social psychology and quantummechanics, our perceptions greatly contribute towardsthe way we form our individual realities and our collectivereality.

“The Letter” was a seed that grew into a monster that hasthe potential to tear our community apart. We, thecommunity, need to make a decision. Do we allow theramblings of one person to destroy the social fabric thatbinds us all together? Or do we treat it as we would treatsome other calamity in our community; such as a naturaldisaster? Do we band together and help each other andmend the damage that has been done?

Every cloud has a silver lining but it is up to us whetheror not we wish to see it.

(These are the personal views of Mr Steve Staines)

Defamation andSocial Media

- by Steve StainesDefamation. What is it?

The law of defamation protects individualreputation. The law assumes that all people are of

good character until the opposite is proved.

People may believe that they have been 'defamed' ifsomeone says or implies something negative about theircharacter but whether this is defamatory depends on factorssuch as its context and to whom it was said. Each casedepends on its facts. For example, it has been found to bedefamatory to say in a particular context that a person isa homosexual, a communist or has scabbed on fellowunionists.

Words and other matter (such as cartoons) can bedefamatory by innuendo - that is, where the reader has toput two and two together to understand the defamatorymeaning.

The test of what is or is not defamatory depends on thestandards of the community as a whole and not just ofsome narrow section or group.

It does not matter if the person intended to refer to, ordisparage a particular person. It is enough if:the words reasonably lead persons acquainted with thecomplaining person to believe she or he is referred to thatthe material discredits the person's character andreputation.

- Republished from the Legal Services Commission ofSouth Australia website www.lawhandbook.sa.gov.au

Social media has changed the way we communicate. Oftenwith any new technology, it can be used for great benefitor great detriment to society.

Unfortunately social media has the ability to propagateuntruths as quickly as it does truths. With traditional formsof media such as newspapers, television and radio; theintegrity of the “news” is assessed and its integrity tested(theoretically) prior to public release. This obviously doesnot occur on social media due to the sheer volume ofposts, comments, likes and re-posts/re-tweets etc.

Mistruths can go viral as fast as facts and this is wherethe users of social media themselves should takeresponsibility for testing the integrity of the “news” theyreceive. A daunting task!

When someone reviews “news”, it is human nature toreject the information that does not fit in with their currentbelief system and absorb that which does. Think aboutthat in the context of social media. Generally if a useragrees with something they read or see then they are morelikely to like, re-post or re-tweet it. But before a user doesthat they should first assess the integrity of the source ofthe information.

In November 2013 there was a landmark decision in theNew South Wales District Court known as Mickle vFarley. Mickle was school teacher. Farley was a formerstudent at the same school. Farley posted defamatorycomments about Mickle on social media. Mickle sued fordefamation and won the case. Farley was ordered by thecourts to pay Mickle $105,000.

So if you post, re-post, comment or like on Facebook (orany other social media) then you may now be classifiedare a “publisher”. So before you post anything just makesure what you are posting is factual and consider thefeelings of others before you do it.

MINUTES OF THE NATIONAL OPALMINERS’ ASSOCIATION

MEETING HELD 24 JULY 2014Teleconference

Present: Peter Christianos, PresidentSebastian Deisenberger & Maxine O'Brien (Secretary) – LRMAEric Seltzer & Kevin Phillips – Queensland Opal Miners AssociationJames Hinds – Queensland Boulder Opal Association

President Peter Christianos welcomed everyoneand thanked them for participating in the

teleconference.

Native Title Eric Stelzer and Kevin Phillips spoke ofthe difficulties they are having with Native Title aroundQuilpie. There are a number of claimants who are usedto being paid large fees by oil and gas companies. Plusthe advertising and application fee is around $1,000and the delay in having a title granted can be up to oneyear.

James Hinds advised around Winton their IndigenousLand Use Agreement (ILUA) expired after ten yearsand even though there is no registered claimant theystill need to advertise as per the right to negotiateprocess. They have an arrangement with theirDepartmental mining office that they can advertise asa group of mining title applicants to cut down on thecosts. Quilpie is not able to do this as there are notmany mining title applications.

Consequently there is very little investment in theboulder opal mining industry. Kevin pointed out thisissue has been ongoing for nearly 20 years.

Kevin will prepare notes for submission on the Qldsituation and Maxine will check with South Australiato ask them to give an overview of their issues. Maxinewill then put together a NOMA submission to requesta change to the native title legislation so that minersare only required to negotiate with determined nativetitle holders – not claimants.

Diesel Fuel RebateJames Hinds advised that as of 1.7.14 the proposeddiesel fuel rebate will 38.143 and indexed every sixmonths. It is currently 31.622. It is hoped the proposalbecomes a reality.

Free Trade Agreement with ChinaMaxine to write to the Federal government seeking areduction in the import duties on opal as part of thefree trade agreement with China.

NOMA AwardsThe meeting discussed briefly the concept of presentinga NOMA award to a worthy person from each stateat each Symposium as an acknowledgment of theircontribution to the opal industry.

Eric Stelzer said he would prefer to see NOMA puttogether an OAM application for Len Cram. Ericagreed to put together the application and Maxine willask Barbara from the Lightning Ridge HistoricalSociety to assist.

National Opal SymposiumThe meeting discussed and agreed to the idea of holdingthe Symposium every three years rather than everytwo years. Maxine to follow up Coober Pedy todetermine if they are definitely hosting the Symposiumnext Easter as part of their 100 year celebrations.

Tourism AustraliaPeter Christianos advised he had drafted a letter toTourism Australia to encourage them to include ourNational Gemstone in their promotions of Australia andto request a meeting with them. He advised that oneof the difficulties is that we do not have anyindependent, reliable figures on the worth of theindustry and the number of people involved in theindustry when talking to government.

Maxine advised the Australian Opal Centre is workingtowards producing a state of the industry report andare currently getting quotes and will be seeking agovernment grant and financial assistance from theindustry. Someone suggested they also look at a PhDproject.

Opal NomenclatureMaxine advised that Australia had been given the jobby CIBJO (world jewellery confederation) to revisethe opal nomenclature so that it describes hydrophaneopal correctly, for inclusion in their gemstone blue book– the bible on describing coloured gemstones. KevinPhillips said we should be careful not to bastardise othercountry’s product as Australia does have some opalthat cracks and does have some hydrophane opal.

Maxine advised we would likely give Ethiopian anddealers of other opal to look at the revision. If it is notaccepted by all world producers the revision is unlikelyto be accepted.

The Great Australian Opal TourThe meeting was happy with NOMA and GAAorganising the tour to all the opal fields to educateinternational gem laboratories and other interestedpeople on Australian opal. Each of the relevant minersassociations are assisting at each stop with mine toursand dinners with miners – Lightning Ridge, Yowah,Quilpie and Coober Pedy.

President & SecretariatThe meeting agreed to hold elections for President anddecide on the Secretariat at each National OpalSymposium as has happened previously. Peter pointedout that the President would then have three years toachieve what he needed to with the Symposiumextended to three years. Maxine to forward nominationforms prior to the next Symposium and only delegatesare eligible to vote.

Arrium Managing Director and CEO, Andrew Roberts, said the marked increase in earnings and cash generationfor the year reflects the ongoing successful executionof the company’s growth strategy, including the recentexpansion of its Mining business.

“Operationally, our Mining business – incorporating ourSouthern Iron operations near Coober Pedy – deliveredearnings before interest tax, depreciation andamortisation (EBITDA) of $686 million, an increase of86% on the prior year and a record for the business,”he said.

“Export hematite iron ore sales were up 51% to 12.5million tonnes, which was above our post expansiontarget rate of 12 million tonnes per year and a verypleasing outcome.”Revenue for the Mining business increased 61% to$1,569 million, from $977 million in the prior year, duemainly to an increase in sales volumes from 8.3 milliontonnes to 12.5 million tonnes.

This included increasing volumes from Southern Iron tojust over 3.8 million tonnes (wet) for the year – the resultof removing key bottlenecks on the Southern Iron railcorridor.

The Whyalla Port continued to perform to expectationsfollowing completion of the expansion to double itscapacity to ~13 million tonnes per year, while the businessalso completed its $86 million magnetite project on timeand on budget.

In terms of outlook, Mr Roberts said the demand forseaborne iron ore is expected to remain strong due tocontinued growth in crude steel production in China anddeclining production of higher-cost Chinese ores.

He said market prices for iron ore are expected to betterreflect their iron content and ‘value in use’ once thecurrent increase of lower grade ores are absorbed, withArrium’s export iron ore sales for FY15 expected to be~13 million tonnes.

The business has increased its focus on cost reductions, aswell as work to access lower cost ores from the MiddlebackRanges sooner. Arrium Mining will also continue itsexploration activities at its Southern Iron operations, incorporating broader survey and sampling at its HawksNest tenement and infill drilling at Peculiar Knob.

Arrium’s Mining business continued to performwell in the 2014 financial year, with revenueincreasing 61% to $1,569 million, due mainly toan increase in sales volumes from 8.3 milliontonnes to 12.5 million tonnes. This included justover 3.8 million tonnes from its Southern Ironoperations near Coober Pedy.

Mining ExpansionPlays Key Role in

Increased Profits –August 26, 2014

Arrium Limited recently announced an underlying net profitafter tax (NPAT) for the 2014 financial year of $296million, an increase of 83% for the prior year of $162million.

Letters to Editor

To the Editor:

In response to the “Trueman for Mayor” letterthat has been distributed around town by AustraliaPost, retyped on Facebook and further referredto by the Mayor's wife on her Facebook page, Iwish the people of Coober Pedy to know that Ihave never exchanged a hello with the man and Iam definitely not a part of his party for Council. To the best my knowledge, neither are any of theother people mentioned.

His views, as stated in his letter, are not acceptableto me in any way, shape or form.

This letter is for the people of Coober Pedy whodon't know me. I do not need to defend myselfto those of you that do know me.

I have been on Council and the Coober PedyProgress Association Inc. for more than 35 yearsand have represented all people in the communityto the best of my ability.

Mr Boro Rapaic, Coober Pedy Resident andRatepayer.

Trueman forMayor letter

What is your opinion?Let’s start with my bloodline.

I am a sixth generation Australian inclusive of English,Danish, French, Irish and Scottish heritage. Do I

identify as an Australian? Yes and No.I consider myself a citizen of Planet Earth.

I was fortunate enough to go to possibly the most multiculturalhigh school in South Australia. My year level and schoolconsisted of more nationalities then I can remember. Myfriendship group consisted of Australians, Americans,Spaniards, Chinese, Sri Lankans, South Africans, Turks,Persian Iranians and Ethiopians. Our religious and politicalbeliefs were equally as diverse. My closest friends were anAussie, a Sri Lankan and a South African who was half Iranian(of Persian ethnicity), half American and raised in South Africa.

In my late teens and early twenties my friendship groupsconsisted of Australians of Czech, Serb, Cambodian, Italian/Scottish, German, Croatian, Australian, English, Hungarian,Bosnian and Greek descent.

Today my partner is a Filipino Australian. My two childrenare half Filipino and half Australian (7th generation).

The godfather of my son is Filipino and his godmother (RIPJenny - forever in our hearts) was Greek. The godfather tomy daughter is Greek and her godmother is Filipino. Mygoddaughter is half Filipino and half Indonesian.

My closest friends today are a mixture of Greeks, Argentinians,South Africans and Aussies. My extended friendship groupconsist of far too many nationalities and ethnicities to mention.

From the ages of 1 – 5 my son was largely raised by Australianaboriginal women who continue to be my friends to this day..

An aboriginal Australian mate taught my son and daughter tocut and polish opal earlier this year.

I have initiated and/or supported countless people of Australianaboriginal descent to further their educational and vocationalprospects as well as promote improvements in healthier eatinghabits and lifestyles.

I have developed and managed numerous projects thatshowcase the aboriginal and non- aboriginal heritage of ourregion. And some one wants to call me racist? Who am Iracist towards? Martians?Steve Staines, Coober Pedy Resident & ratepayer

Dear Editor,

In regards to a letter that wasposted to many residents of

Coober Pedy including myselfby B.C Truemen.

I read this letter on Tuesday the 19thof August 2014 at approximately10pm, and was shocked that myname and others were mentioned init. In my opinion it seems that B.CTrueman has assumed that myselfand other individuals named in thisletter support or follow his views.

I would like to make it very clearthat I DO NOT support or followB.C Truemans opinions or remarksagainst the indigenous community ofCoober Pedy. It is very baffling tome as to how and why B.C Truemanused my name.

I was also disappointed that certainmembers of the public whoobviously don’t know me wellenough, cast their judgement uponmy character and fueled thepotentially defamatory statementscontained in the letter by posting theirremarks on Facebook.

I was born and raised in CooberPedy, and have lived here my wholelife. I have indigenous relatives andlife long school mates who share mydisappointment in the contents ofthis letter, and in the way certainmembers of the public insinuatedthat I would be part of this.

Coober Pedy is one of the mostmulticultural towns in Australia andI’m proud to be part of it. Growingup here taught me a lot about ourdiverse cultures and beliefs, and Iwouldn’t have it any other way. Itreat everyone equally, with love andcompassion. I always have alwayswill.

We must all work together inbuilding a stronger community, as itonce was. Coober Pedy has hadsome long standing issues and Ibelieve that it is our duty to uniteand take the appropriate stepstowards bettering our communityfor future generations. Let’s not getall worked up on the opinion of oneperson and focus our energypositively.

Yours SincerelyBundi Pantelis

We must...build a strongercommunity, as it once was

Coober Pedy Street andRoad Names

Where did the name of your street come from?Part 60 in a series

by Sue Britt

HUTCHISON STREET is named for Will Hutchison, the 14-year-old boy who discovered opal here on 1/2/ 1915. His story has been told many times. Lesswell documented are the adventures of his father,James Hutchison, who led the expedition. James

first came to the Stuart Ranges in 1895.

“Unfortunately as we came over the hummocksapproaching the landing place, we saw the little boatwell out and steaming away for WA; we had missedher by about an hour only.” Undaunted they travelledby camel and coach to Port Lincoln where they learnedthat the Helen Nicholl was booked to leave Port Adelaidefor WA on the 29th of May.

The prospecting party caught the SS Ferrit to PortAdelaide. On entering the Port River, they “wereunfortunate enough to see the Helen Nicholl againsteaming away without us, as she was well out of thePort River as we entered.” There was a 10-12 daydelay before her return and during this time the partysplit up leaving only Hutchison and Morris to go on toWestern Australia together.

They finally arrived in Esperance on the 4th of June, exactly 3 months after setting out. The two went on toNorseman where they mined and continued to prospect, joining other local rushes to Coolgardie and MountRagged. Near Mount Ragged they “spent many daysprospecting, and got several fine colours of gold, but notenough to warrant a longer stay, although I believe now,we may have missed a small gold bearing area.”

James Hutchison was an experienced bushman and aperson who thrived on adventure. After the 1985 journeyrelated above, he came home, married Polly Sutton in1897 and settled down to raise a family for a few years. Then in 1914 he organised his second gold prospectingexpedition with the backing of the New ColoradoProspecting Syndicate. The party set off from AnnaCreek again, this time taking camels, but again spendingmore time looking for water than gold. James son, Will, found opal (while searching for water) and they peggedclaims but failed to find the rich opal fields that madethe men who followed them rich.

Through his life, James continued to take time off fromhis station managing duties to explore and prospect. Inhis obituary written on 11/8/39 it said, “During his life,he made several excursions with exploring parties todistant parts of the state. . . His last expedition wastaken with Mr L.A. Wells, the well-known explorer, whenthey narrowly escaped death from thirst in CentralAustralia.”

Information from Prospecting Experience 1895by JR Hutchison, Narracoorte Herald 21/10/38Obituary, Narracoorte Herald 11/8/39Photo from The Discovery of Coober Pedy byKath Crilly

Hutchison was a farmer and grazier from the South-East of South Australia, a descendant of the pioneeringDunn family who took up land in the Kingston District. He was working Morambo Station with his father in1894 when gold fever struck. At that time “the financialoutlook in South Australia was anything but bright” andnewspaper stories about the enormously rich finds ofgold in Western Australia were avidly read by men inevery town. “In the streets, on the footpaths and in theshops the one topic was gold, gold, gold.” James wasa young man in his 20s and he “could feel the call to thebush beckoning.” He formed a partnership with hiscousin J Morris, manager of Penola Station, E. Coates, manager of Narracoorte Station, C.R. Mann, a surveyorand S. Blagg of Robe. They made arrangements to buyanimals at Anna Creek Station, which was owned byHogarth and Warren at the time, and set off by train on4th February 1895.

At Anna Creek their arrival aroused excitement as theywere the first prospecting party to join the gold rush tothe west from there. Mr Warren strongly recommendedthey take camels but James and the others “thought thedevil we knew was better than the devil we didn t know”thus making one of their “biggest blunders” they chosehorses. They left Anna Creek on the morning of 9th

February travelling from first light until 9 or 10am andthen resting through the 105° – 110° F heat of the dayand setting off again in the evening. They arrived atLake Phillipson on the 19th of February. “This was amagnificent sheet of water I should say about 10 or 12miles in circumference when filled.” Longs Creek, which flows into the lake, has some “pretty andpicturesque places, plentifully surrounded by red gumtrees.” It was here that John McDouall Stuart madecamp in 1858 on his first trip to the interior. Hutchisonfound a dozen pairs of horseshoes in a mulga tree. Theywere nailed together in pairs and had been there longenough for them to have become embedded in the wood.James guessed that they must have belonged to Stuart.

Near the site of present day Tarcoola they spelled theirhorses at a rock hole for several days. Interestingly theyfound “several nice little pieces of gold but not in anyquantity.” James must have berated himself later whenTarcoola became the “best reefing gold field in SouthAustralia.” A 16-camel team was coming through to thecoast so the prospectors sold their horses to WilgenaStation and joined the caravan. They were aiming forFlagstaff Landing where the SS Helen Nicholl was due.

From Lake Phillipson, the prospecting party made threeattempts to go west. Twenty miles from the lake theycould see the country getting drier but they travelled onfor several days hoping to reach the ranges near theWestern Australian border. They found a few claypanswith water but the further west they went the drier it gotand they went 2 or 3 days at a time without any water.

The horses lost condition. Then they had to make adesperate decision -whether to go on and trustto luck or to turn back, knowing the places wherethey had found water beforewere likely to be dry. Theyturned back. “Our surmisewas right, and anyone whohas travelled the NullarborPlains can testify as to itsbeing one of the driest, ifnot driest portion ofAustralia, as well as thehottest and one of theheaviest populated withflies.”

After trying three differentroutes west, with theirhorses “just skin andbone,” the partys “outlookwas anything but cheerful.”

They decided to go southto Fowlers Bay where theyhoped to catch a boat toWA. They were “now atthe highest pitch ofpoverty,” drinking from awaterhole with a dead dingoin it and filling their waterbags.

To the Editor, By now I am pretty sure thatjust about everyone has heard about THE

LETTER (distributed by a certain MrTrueman to the wider community)

I am very disturbed and completely shocked thatmy name has come up without my consent orknowledge. NONE of the contents in ANY way, shape or form, reflect my views.

My belief is that nobody should write a Nazi-like letter such as this, and I would like todistance myself as far as the next galaxy fromthe contents.

Just like the other persons named in this letter, Ihave become a victim of people assuming thatI have a connection to this man.

Just for every ones information : I have NEVERmet this man, NEVER spoken to him andNEVER had any other kind of communicationwith this person, EVER.

That brings me to the next point, where peopleassume things...

On a certain facebook page, I and the othersnamed in the letter of question, have beenaccused of an association with Mr Trueman, and I quote from the owner of the page:

Another week, another letter.....MrTrueman.....what can I say....running for MayorI hear, running our local aboriginal communityout of town.....I must say I was disgusted at yourlast outburst.....what a deplorable, disgustingman you are....I for one will make sure you don'tget elected as Mayor in my wonderful multi-cultural community...for those that he apparentlyrepresents and share his views ...take heed.....Ifor one will NOT vote for you and hope that thedecent people of this town also don't......pleasedecent people of this town please run forcouncil.....we do not need not need the likes ofMr. Trueman and his merry followers named inhis latest letter making important decisions onour behalf....

This person should be ashamed to say somethingas stupid as this by assuming things, and thisperson should be old and wise enough not to fallinto a trap like this. I have tried to contact thisperson several times for the opportunity torespond to their audience and to understand thereasons behind these unfounded comments andaccusations that I believe have defamed me.Unfortunately I have not been given theopportunity to do this.

If I do not get an apology and a satisfactoryexplanation I will have to name the person as wellas taking the matter to court. I have done nothingwrong and will not be a victim of certain peoplehaving, in my opinon, an ego -trip and a politicalagenda which has nothing, whatsoever to do withme and my opinions.

“..Malicious attacks - appear to targetpotential councillors”, says resident

In regards to B.C.Trueman’s letter that was recentlycirculated throughout our town and the latest of sevenletter’s that I have received through the post.

I query Australia Post transmitting known “poison pen” lettersthrough our mail system, particularly when not one has beenaddressed correctly..

None of what has been implied in that letter are my views andI am not a member of any political party headed by B.C.Trueman.

Facebook post’s that suggest these views are mine are bothmischievous, incorrect and I believe, defamatory and damaging.I am now seeking legal advice on both B.C. Trueman’s letterand that which was published by our esteemed MAYOR’Swife on her Facebook page, by both Ms Baines and herfollowers.

These, in my opinion - malicious attacks on facebook, appearto target myself and other members of the local communityand in particular those who could be perceived as beingoutspoken or nominating as councillors in the NovemberCouncil elections.

Public Notice

They also appear to have been launched from the CooberPedy Mayor’s own household.

On a separate matter, it has also been suggested that a recentarticle that I wrote for the Coober Pedy Regional Times thatappeared on page five on the 31’st July Edition is a fabrication, and facts are misconstrued. This is not so and I stand byevery word that I wrote.

The Coober Pedy Concerned Residents Group will be holdinga public meeting in the Greek Community Hall this Saturdaythe 30th August at 3p.m.where I will gladly debate and presentsome evidence on issue’s that appeared in that article.

I invite people from the SENIOR OFFICER’S GROUP toattend, the President and Vice President of the RSL, our townCouncillors, our MAYOR and I hope everyone that isinterested will attend.

Most of the local community will have seenbeautiful displays of yellow cassia flowersblooming in the region during this winter. The large amount of rain received this year

has ensured that wildflowers and plants have been abundant.

Now is the time to be collecting seeds or cuttings andbeautifying our gardens with native plants for the future.

A cassia tree can be a striking addition to your personallandscape and will help to attract the appropriate insectsthat the native birds like to feed on.

There are quite a variety of cassia’s about and most cassiatree information recommends growing these particularnative trees from their seeds.

The seeds are found inside long, black pods. They arerock hard and water tight, so they need to be soaked inwater for at least 24 hours. Nick the seed with a sharpknife before planting it in a pot of moist commercialgrowing medium and local soil.

COOBER PEDY OPAL MINERSATTEND LIGHTNING RIDGE GEM

TRADE SHOW

“Australian opal is in a 10-20 year upward cycleand we need to gear up for it,” says National OpalMiner’s Association President Peter Christianos.

“Australian opal is the 'holy trinity' and we are marketinga package of white-boulder-black. That's our uniqueproposition. All for one and one for all!” said MrChristianos.

Peter Christianos Jnr is second generation opal miner. Hisfamily’s connection with Coober Pedy stretches back to1956 when is mother and father packed their four sons(Peter was 13 y.o.) into the truck and bumped their wayto Coober Pedy over the heavily corrugated track. Thejourney took over 10 days.

Three years later the Christianos family uncovered one ofthe largest known opal fortunes at the famous Eight-Milefield northwest of Coober Pedy. Once the news circulatedaround the Australian Greek community there was a floodof opal miners to Coober Pedy. Many of them and theirdescendants remain part of our community to this day.

In 1961 Peter, in pursuit of his own fortune, headed toLightning Ridge only to return to Coober Pedy a coupleof years later. Peter toiled at opal mining alone for arounda year without success and became increasingly indebtedto Bepe Coro. He persevered and at the age of twentymade a most remarkable strike at The Ten Mile with anunheard of number of opal bearing levels in his claim. Sixlevels of good opal!

Later, an open-cut by George Christianos (Peter’s father)strated working his son’s claim with the first D8 Bulldozerin Coober Pedy. The dozer revealed a further ten levels of opal!

This heralded the beginning of an extensive career in thevalue-adding, wholesaling and retail side of the industryfor Peter. His mining career has included the search foropal, chrysophase, tourmaline and diamonds and has takenhim to Hong Kong, USA, Japan, Sierra Leon, Brazil andevery opal field in Australia. Despite his success, Petercan’t help the bite of the opal bug and he continues tohave a good scratch around for opal. Maybe one dayhe’ll find that elusive 11th level!

“Black opal does not stand alone,” says Peter, all opalsits on the white platform. That's why I am grateful forthe Ethiopian production. It has not hurt South Australianopal, as TADA Opal recently confirmed, their bread andbutter (i.e. potch and colour) goes to India - a market thatexists partly thanks to Ethiopian opal,” says Mr Christianos.

“India also buy Ridge low grade now thanks the Ethiopianopal. I think the industry is overly focused on black opaland China right now,” Mr Christianos continues. “We mustavoid putting all of our eggs in one basket which occurredwith the last Japanese based (tourist) boom. We, as anational industry, must diversify our opal-based tourismmarket as much as possible. Also we should marketourselves domestically, a totally overlooked market untilrelatively recently,” he continued.

Mr Christianos also suggested the national opal industrymust work together to build up SA and QLD as equalvalue partners and voices.

Mr Christianos praised the work of Coober Pedy opalproducers, Dale and Tanya Price of TADA Opals P/L.

“They are ‘real’ producers, part of the 300 acrossAustralia. Like the Spartans of Australia! I reckon we haveless than 200 core miners out of 7500 total opal producingpopulation inclusive of family members that are involvedin the industry. We need to get to the magic number of300 and then encourage the other 700 fringe miners whowill no doubt step-up too over the next few years,” saidMr Christianos.

“Mr Jock Seekamp, who recently found a run of opal atTurkey Ridge in Coober Pedy, was there too. He broughta piece of opal from Turkey Ridge in to show us”.

It was TADA Opals third year at the Lightning Ridge GemTrade Show. It was the only stall that solely had CooberPedy Opal.

“ The car park was abuzz with ute and table sellers peddlingopal from all over Australia and the upstairs section of thevenue paraded opal settings via a national jelwellerycompetition (held every two years).”

After two days drive there (1000 kilometres/day) followedby 4 days trading and finally a two day drive back, was itworth it? You bettcha!

“One thing that I noticed this year was that there were farmore big buyers this year than the past two years,”reckoned Mr Price. “The general feeling of the opalindustry seems to be really picking up. There was a verypositive vibe this year,” said Dale.

The Chinese market is still propping up the industry withstrong demand continued from the world’s second largesteconomy.

“Demand is strong so fire up machinery and get out intothe fields and find some opal! Nothing has changed. Opalmining was and always will be hard work but nothingworth having comes easy. Work hard, believe in yourselfand you will find it. And good luck!”

“We didn't go to the Gold Coast Wholesale Trade Showthe following week because we wanted to get back toCoober Pedy and start digging for more opal,” Daleconcluded.

TADA Opals Dale andTanya Price from CooberPedy attended the LightningRidge Gem Trade Show inJuly

“It was interesting to catchup with a lot of ex- CooberPedy people like AndrewAndrea,” Mr Andrea(“Wog”) used to manageBP in Coober Pedy and isnow opal mining inQueensland with JohnnyCucuk.

“Darryl Borrett and partner “Don” from Adelaide werealso in The Ridge trying their luck with his automaticnoodling machine, testing its ability to detect LightningRidge opal,” said Dale.

Many miners are keen to hear the results!

Work is well and truly underway on the Vinnies’Coober Pedy site (located at Post Office Hill Road)with the existing building being completely demol-ished to make way for a new, larger building.

The decision to redevelop the Coober Pedy Family Cen-tre by the St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) was a combi-nation of the existing facility no longer meeting the com-munity’s requirements and Vinnies wanting to invest inthe area and maintain their presence in the region whichis desperate for their assistance.

State President of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SA)Brian Spencer said “we took the decision to build a newFamily Centre instead of renovate the current building toensure we are able to cater to the current and future re-quirements of the region.

The new Family Centre will be bigger, more comfortableand for the first time we will be able to provide disabledaccess.”

Vinnies Coober Pedy GettingMore Than a Facelift

Brian Spencer continues “we took the decision to rede-velop the site during the wet season so as to limit thenumber of people we disrupt. We are very keen to con-tinue working in the Coober Pedy region and I am happyto say that the new Family Centre will be reopened welland truly before Christmas.”

The new centre will have greater car parking facilities, provide a disabled front access, be more comfortable asthe building will be well sealed, insulated and air condi-tioned as well as being a larger building generally. Thelarger floor space dedicated to the shop will enable Vinniesto stock more items required by men, women and chil-dren who are facing challenging circumstances.

Further information regarding the date of the Coober Pedystore’s grand reopening will be provided in the comingmonths.

Volunteers will be needed to help with the store when itreopens. All enquiries are welcome by calling 8112 8700.

PUBLIC NOTICE

There have been some nasty bugsaround town. Not the ones you

stomp on, but the germ type onesthat make people sick.

What I hear, and friends have been tellingme is there a strong strain of Man Fluaround. Man Flu has been described as acrippling and debilitating disorder thatmakes a man hurt all over and feel sick. The other thing about Man Flu is there isno scientific basis to the ailment. Howeverif you ask any man if they have had it,they will tell you in the greatest detail justhow bad it was. Any man that has livedthrough this horror is called a Man Flusurvivor. It is said to be worse thanchildbirth and a paper cut combined. Toadd to the problems, Man Flu lasts forweeks.

There are Doctors that have not been ableto diagnose Man Flu, so self diagnosis isvery important. The early symptoms of Man Flu are varied.* Sneezing* Coughing* Unable to use legs and arms, in somecases fingers grow weaker and the TVremote becomes useless to the sufferer.* Limited vision, the TV screen is the onlything the sufferer can focus on for anylength of time. Sports programs can evenput a smile on the sufferer’s face. Veryencouraging for their survival.* The ears seem to wax over and the TVis the only thing the stricken can hear andunderstand for weeks. Selective hearingcan be a long term effect of Man Flu.

There is no known cure for Man Flu, butthere are ways the patient can gain somecomfort to a faster recovery. Womenseem to be immune from Man Flu, soyour mum, wife or girl friend is your bestnurse.

* Expect a slow recovery rate. Pleasenote, the more pampering the slower therecovery.* Constant attention can take his mind offthe illness that is crippling his body.* All comfort food must be his favourite.* Extra attention on top of constantattention with a big dash of understandingand sympathy and TLC will help.* The sufferer must have complete controlof the TV channels to ensure anyrecovery at all.* The dog needs to be close to the sickman, because the dog is the only one thatreally understands.

There are ways to avoid Man Flu,* Eat balanced meals; fresh food isimportant to your health.* Drink water* Exercising outside, get sun safe vitamin D* Get plenty of sleep* Wash your hands

If you have Man Flu and no amount ofpampering has made it better it’s time togo to the doctor, get that special womenin your life to make the appointmentbecause you know you won’t.

Sick as a Dog

How do I know so much about Man Flu?Well last week my Mum was sick andshe had all the symptoms. She may bethe first woman ever to have Man Flu.

Lucky she slept a lot because when shewas awake she was very demanding andhaving me running everywhere. It wasnurse Charlie Paris to the rescue.
