ASIAN FONTS AND ZEBRA PRINTERS

Zebra offers a wide variety of Asian fonts for our customer base. These fonts can be downloaded intoflash, programmed on EPROM’s or stored on PCMCIA cards. This document will explain each font, inwhat forms they are available, and how to install and call them up in a ZPL II format.

Asian fonts available from Zebra.

Zebra offers fonts in four Asian languages, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Thai. Within theselanguages we offer different subsets, these are explained below.

JAPANESE (Monotype Mincho & HGP Gothic B) - Kanji is the official (non-phonetic) Japanesewritten language encompassing thousands of ideographs. Although tens of thousands of kanji havebeen used in the past, currently only 2000 or so are used in everyday language. Nevertheless,mastering the use of kanji is extremely difficult. Besides the necessity of memorizing large numbers ofkanji, individual kanji adopt different meanings and pronunciations depending on their juxtapositionwithin a sentence or word. Zebra offers two different font styles of Kanji (Mincho & Gothic).

KOREAN (HY Gothic Hangul)- The Korean alphabet, called han-gul, consists of twenty-four letters,fourteen consonants and ten vowels. The letters are combined to form phonemes so that the actualnumber of letters is increased to forty, nineteen consonants and twenty-one vowels.Han-gul is a true alphabet but it incorporates the characteristics of a syllabary; that is, letters arealways arranged in syllable blocks. This makes it possible to write Korean from top to bottom or fromright to left, without having to turn the letters around in any way. Another advantage is that han-gul andChinese characters, which are commonly used in Korea, can be readily mixed in writing and printing.

CHINESE (Monotype Kai & Monotype Sung)- Chinese use characters which are different from analphabet. Characters generally have two parts, one which represents the meaning and the other thesound. Every character corresponds to a single syllable in Chinese, so the part which represents thesound doesn’t not represent a phoneme like a letter in an alphabet but rather represents a wholesyllable. A standard Romanization system was adopted by mainland China to help Chinese studentslearn Chinese pronunciation (Sung or Simplified). Taiwan developed a special alphabet, which worksin conjunction with the Chinese characters (Kai Big 5 or Traditional).

THAI ANGSANA- There are 44 consonant characters in Thai representing 20 consonant sounds. Foreach consonant item shown here, the first letter is the consonant form (usually pronounced with "or"vowel); the word after that alphabet is the name identifying that alphabet. There are 9 shortmonopthong (single) vowel sounds and 9 long counterpart vowel sounds plus 3 diphthongs sounds inThai. However, there are 28 so-called vowel forms. The Thai vowel forms do not all follow initialconsonants, some are placed before the initial consonants, some after the consonants, some abovethe consonants, and some underneath the consonants. The vowels that are "complex" forms (i.e.composed of more than one part) can be placed around the consonants.

Scalable and Bit-Mapped Asian fonts.

Zebra provides the Asian fonts in either a scalable or bit-mapped format.

A scalable font is a font represented in an object-oriented graphic language such as PostScript orTrueType. Such fonts are called scalable because the representation of the font defines the shape ofeach character (the typeface) but not the size. Given a typeface definition, a scalable-font system canproduce characters at any size (or scale). Scalable fonts are available on either PCMCIA card,downloaded into flash memory, or on EPROM. Once again, this is dependent on the printer and whatoptions are installed. The EPROM and flash versions can be factory or field installed, the PCMCIAcard is field installable only.

In a bit-mapped font, every character is represented by an arrangement of dots. To print a bit-mappedcharacter, a printer simply locates the character’s bit-mapped representation stored in memory andprints the corresponding dots. Each different font, even when the typeface is the same, requires adifferent set of bit maps. The bit-mapped fonts are available on EPROM or can be downloaded intoflash memory. This is dependent upon what printer you have and what options are installed. Youmust also take in to consideration what dot density the printer is. The bit-mapped fonts come in both203dpi and 300dpi. The fonts can either be factory or field installed and not all fonts are available forall printers.

Part numbers and pricing are available in the Appendix A of this document.

Installing the Asian fonts on a Zebra printer.

Zebra provides the Asian fonts on PCMCIA Card, EPROM, or Flash.

EPROM- If the font is on an EPROM, the chip must be plugged into the appropriate IC socket. Youcan follow the installation instructions included with the EPROM.

PCMCIA CARD- The font card must be inserted into the memory card interface while the printer ispowered off. You can follow the installation instructions included with the font card.

FLASH FONTS- Flash fonts are downloaded from the PC to the E: (flash memory). You can follow theinstallation instructions included with the disk or utility.

How to verify what fonts are available on the Zebra printer.

Once you have installed the fonts in the printer you will want to verify that they are available for use.There are a variety of ways to do this depending upon the printer model you are using.

Printers with a LCD front panel can print out a list of fonts by following the below instructions:

Enter the SETUP menu on the front panel.Press the NEXT button until you reach the LIST FONTS screen.Press the black oval key below PRINT.A directory of available fonts will print out.

Printers without the LCD front panel will require a ZPLII string to print a directory listing.^XA^WD*:*.*^XZ

^WD is the print directory command. *:*.* is a wildcard that will print all directories (*:*.*) can besubstituted for whatever directory you would like to check.

E: = Onboard Flash B: = Memory Card (PCMCIA) R: = RAM

Note that the MSUNG.FNT is located in the B:directory and has been named font 1

^CW1,B:MSUNG.FNT^FS - This line is calling up the SUNG font from the B: directory and naming itfont 1.

^COY,300,1^FS - This line is turning the Cache on. Each printer has 22k of fixed cache but whenusing Asian fonts additional cache is required for the characters. The (COY) command turns thecache on and sets the size to 300k (300). The (1) switches to the internal buffer. The internal workingbuffer is much larger than the normal cache buffer and should be used when printing Asian characters.Printing Asian fonts greatly reduce the printer’s memory available for graphics, fonts and formats.

^CI14^FS - The ^CI command changes the International character set to 14 which is 16-bit Unicodeencoded scalable fonts.

Encoding Tables - Zebra printers support Asian fonts that have Unicode encoding. ZTools willconvert the TrueType font into an unbound Unicode TrueType format required by the printer. Theprinter also needs an encoding table to convert the ZPL input into the font’s internal Unicode encoding.These tables are provided with the font on the font cards (PCMCIA cards) and EPROMS. The tablewill appear as (xxxxxxx.DAT) on the directory label. The active encoding tables are indicated by (*) onthe directory label. Most font cards support the following encoding tables. The default encoding tableis UNICODE.DAT.

GB.DAT - GBUNICODE.DAT -Unicode 2.0

Note that both the GB.DAT file and the UNICODE.DATare present and are available to be used for calling up theSUNG characters.

^SE (Select encoding) - The ^SE command allows you to select the encoding table. Somelanguages support several encoding tables, which can be present on the font card. Not all encodingtables will be available for usage; this is greatly dependent upon your operating system and your PC’sregional settings and installed software.Remember: In order to use an encoding table it must be present on the font card and must beselected. Below is a sample of how the ^SE command is used.

^SEB:GB.DAT

Here we have called up the GB encoding table from the B: directory. We are now able to use the GBencoding table.

This line is setting the field origin at 50,50 (^FO50,50)

The next command ^A1N,175,175 Is calling up font #1 (which we set as SUNG) with normalorientation and a height and width of 175.

^FH_ = The field hex instruction allows you to enter the hexadecimal value for any character in the^FD statement. The ^FH instruction must precede each ^FD instruction. Within the ^FD statementthe HEX indicator ( _ is used in this example) must precede each hexadecimal value.

^FD_30_30_45_4A_65_41_4E_4A^FS

This section is calling out the specific characters by their four-digit GB value. The "_" must precedeeach numeric value for the character. Below is a sample table and a ZPL string calling out thecharacters.

Each circled group of characters is referencing a GB value for a Chinese character. To call up aspecific Chinese character using the GB table you will need to call up the first two characters from theleft hand column (59), the third number in the left hand column combined with the character in the toprow above the table (70). These fourcharacters (59,70) are the GB value for theChinese character to your left.

This example will demonstrate how to recall the character using its GB value.

2) The first character ofthe second set of

numbers can be found onthe left column. The

second character islocated on the top rowabove the character youhave selected (_24).

1) The first set of characters tobe called up are located on the left side of the column (_5A).

When the two sets of characters are combined (_5A_24) they call up the character.

Note: If using Unicode, select Unicode encoding table and then use (_51_45).

The other numbers that you see below each character are values for different encoding tables. Somefonts such as Kanji may support up to three other encoding tables. Remember, If you want to use thevalues of another encoding table that encoding table must be selected as the default table.
