And, like lots of other diseases, the earlier you catch it, the better chance you have of getting rid of it. The best way to avoid gum disease is with regular dental checkups and cleanings, good oral hygiene at home and healthy eating habits. Routine exams and cleanings may also help catch a problem before you need expensive treatment. At the dentist’s office Your dentist will check for gum disease during your routine dental visit. Based on whether or not you show signs of the disease, your dentist will likely suggest one of the following: Prevention If you have good gum health, your dentist will probably suggest a routine teeth cleaning once or twice a year. This preventive care helps remove plaque, tartar and stains from your teeth. Treatment If you show signs of gum disease, your dentist will likely recommend a deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing, or periodontal maintenance). A deep cleaning usually requires you to come in for few appointments. Each appointment will focus on a different section of your mouth. Your dentist or hygienist may need to numb your mouth before the cleaning. And you may need medication afterwards to manage any pain and prevent infection. 855843 06/12 Offered by: Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company or Connecticut General Life Insurance Company.
