The SSLRC undertakes LED luminaire, signal and lamp testing and has been satisfying client requirements meticulously for over 4 years. Advanced and up-to-date photometric and radiometric measurement technology enables the SSLRC laboratories to assist in the development and testing of all LED based illumination products from traffic signals and street lighting through to architectural lights, commercial lighting and displays. Distinct from other lighting laboratories, the SSLRC has focused on assisting the LED industry by investing in equipment that provides rapid and consistent LED analysis with high degrees of repeatability, accuracy and confidence.

The SSLRC facility is one of only a handful of easy to access facilities dedicated to LED product design and testing. LEDs require specialised test and measurement equipment with initial capital costs beyond the reach of many companies. Fortunately the SSLRC can undertake LED photometric measurements include full luminance and illuminance measurements such as luminous flux, 2D imaging photometry, CRI, CCT and colour chromaticity coordinates.

As well as the formal testing services the SSLRC provides general technical advice and support to members of the general lighting industry, Energy Saving Trust, and other governmental and professional bodies.

Due to continuous SSLRC research into LED product development it has become a UK representative member of The Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST) established in 2002 to advance the effective use of energy-efficient solid-state lighting and to speed its market acceptance.

The SSLRC laboratories have specialist-testing equipment enabling a tailor-made service to suit every testing requirement.

The specialist facilities allow the laboratory to offer a wide range of non-LED lamp testing including conventional Tungsten lamp, Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) with testing covering life and lumen maintenance measurements.

In addition full stress and soak testing facilities are available through several environmental testing chambers that enable the SSLRC to simulate the conditions that many LED products will be expected to operate throughout their lifecycle. Such facilities are vital for testing LED products and allow customers to test their LED products under extreme temperature and humidity ranges for prolonged periods to reveal potential modes of failure enabling a deeper understanding of the longevity performance of their products.In addition to providing comprehensive test and measurement facilities the SSLRC provides a range of specialist training courses for the lighting industry including:

What is industrial ethernet?Ethernet is a means of transmitting a signal between two or more devices over a shared medium and has been in use for many years in offices throughout the world. Industrial Ethernet uses this technology to communicate between Industrial control and automation devices. Typically, lithium ion batteries will provide around twice the energy of a nickel metal hydride battery at the same power for a given weight of a battery and in excess of four times the amount available from a nickel cadmium battery of a similar weight. This allows the equipment designer to either reduce the weight of the portable equipment or extend the operating life. Other significant advantages include an almost 100% charge efficiency, i.e. no or little energy wasted during charge, this has an environmental impact when one considers the number of portable appliances being recharged and a cost benefit to industry because it is not paying for energy that it gets no benefit from. In addition, lithium ion cells have a very low self discharge, this means that batteries can be left on the shelf longer before being used.Lithium ion batteries are now being used in every type of portable equipment, including military, medical, security, control and instrumentation and general electronics.
