The July flower is

Larkspur.

In Greek mythology larkspur sprang up from the blood of Alex after he killed himself following a temper tantrum resulting in an act of dishonor when he did not receive Achilles’ amour. Soldiers were also said to use larkspur in ancient times as a method to control body lice. Other healing uses that have been connected to the larkspur include the treatment of hemorrhoids, colic in children and wound repair. Folklore reveals a number of names for this cheap mild jerseys flower including lark’s heel, lark’s toe, lark’s claw, knight’s spur and stagger weed.

RALPH WALDO

EMESON,

“CONCORD HYMN”

The Fourth of July celebrates America's independence and few poems remind us of the sacrifices required during the Revolutionary War better than Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Concord Hymn." It was sung at the completion of the Concord Battle Monument on April 19, 1837.

By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled, Here once the embattled farmers stood, And fired the shot heard round the world,

The foe long since in silence slept, Alike the Conqueror silent sleeps, And Time the ruined bridge has swept Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream, We set to-day a votive stone, That memory may their deed redeem, When like our sires our sons are gone. Spirit! who made those freemen dare To die, or leave their children free, Bid time and nature gently spare The shaft we raise to them and Thee.

National Ice Cream Day

3rd Sunday in July

When you get the urge for a snack on a hot, humid summer night, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? That's right....Ice Cream! Therefore, it's only fitting that ice cream be given it's own special day. On this day, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little...have one of each!

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month.

Ice cream is nutritious. A little heavy on the sugar and calories, ice cream is otherwise good for you. Its base ingredient is milk, which is loaded with healthy vita-mins and minerals.

Did you know? Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in cones as early as 1896.

The Birth of American

Independence

When the initial battles in the Revolutionary broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete Independence from Great Britain, and those who Did were considered radical. By the middle of the Following year however, many more colonists had

come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in Thomas Paine’s bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense,” published in early 1776. On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies’ independence. Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution, but appointed a five-man committee–including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York–to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain.

The Greek American

Rehabilitation and Care Centre

Mourns the Loss of His Eminence Metropolitan

Iakovos of Chicago

The Board of Directors, Staff, Residents and Volunteers of the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre mourn the sudden loss of our beloved spiritual leader and Father, His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago. His Eminence was a man of unconditional and perpetual love, devoted to our faith and his flock. He was a great spiritual leader and teacher and a very wise man who was firm in his beliefs, yet gentle, humble and kind. Metropolitan Iakovos was a good friend to all. May we remember his love and compassion for his flock and our Lord. As our spiritual leader, Metropolitan Iakovos passionately embraced our charitable mission to provide quality and compassionate care for the elderly and destitute of our community. During the early years of operation of the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre, we were facing financial difficulties and instability. His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos encouraged us to persevere and aspire to fulfill our goal of providing a safe haven for those in need. His inspiration allowed us to continue our philanthropic goals. He reminded us that our philanthropy, our Hellenic heritage and our spirituality as Orthodox Christians are important to our legacy. Metropolitan Iakovos held a special place in his heart for our nursing home and our residents, presiding over many of our religious services and attending our celebratory events. During his visits, he always acknowledged the faithful contributions that our residents made to our churches in the Metropolis over the years. His uplifting and inspirational words of love for our Lord and Savior will resonate with us always. His love of life, his sense of humor and his bright smile will be forever etched in our memories. We will treasure these memories and the wisdom that he expounded to all of us. We will greatly miss His Eminence whom we truly admired and respected.

May the good Lord welcome Metropolitan Iakovos to his everlasting Kingdom and may his memory be forever eternal.

Amelia Earhart Day

Amelia Earhart broke many early aviation records.

Legend and mystery surrounds the final flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. They were on a record setting attempt to fly around the world, when they became lost in the Pacific Ocean. On July 2, 1937, they headed on a difficult leg of the journey towards Howell Island in the Pacific. Weather conditions were less than ideal. While still in radio communication, ships on the ground confirmed that Earhart was having difficulty finding the island. Ultimately, radio communications faded and died. The plane was never heard from again.

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart's plane resulted in the largest search and rescue operation to date. It also sparked rumors as to what caused the disappearance. To this day, theories and speculation still exists about the cause of the disappearance. Some theories involve conspiracies, and even alien abductions.

Did you Know? The proper spelling of her name is Amelia. It was misspelled in a song about her, and is now the more popular, albeit incorrect, spelling of her name.

21st of July

Junk Food Day

For some of us, every day is Junk Food Day. For the rest of us, National Junk Food Day is an opportunity to guiltlessly eat your favorite junk food.

Dietitians will tell you that junk food is any food that contains little nutritional value. We also include foods that are high in salts, fats, and sugars. In other words, junk food is all that tasty stuff that the dietitians, and Mom, say is bad for us.

On Junk Food Day, you get to eat anything you want. Eat any amounts that you want, too. Tomorrow, however, it's back to a healthy diet.

Activity Happenings ...

June was a lovely month for everyone because it officially brings the beginning of summer, the best season of the year, despite the uncooperative weather!

During the month of June, we welcomed and we thank our visitors from St. Haralambos Philoptochos, “Friends”, the Assumption Philoptochos and the Ladies Society of Achladokampos for Greek Coffee and sweets. We enjoyed outings to Botanical Garden, Culver’s, Papagallino Café for Greek coffee and sweets and Rivers Casino for some gambling. The residents asked for shopping excursions, so we went shopping at the Dollar Tree and Walmart. Afterwards, there was time for a snack at one of the fast food restaurants in the area. The delicious and always highly anticipated lunch at Demetri’s Restaurant is still one of our favorite outings. We also had some enjoyable afternoons of musical entertainment by Mike who played the accordion and sang some of the residents favorite songs and Mark who sang and played the piano.

Our Father’s Day Social was full of loving moments. Residents, families and staff savored hamburgers and hot dogs on the patio. A special treat for all were the delicious milkshakes that our Dietary Department made special for the occasion. Fathers received presents and a card telling them how much we love them. It was a perfect way to celebrate all of the wonderful fathers and father figures in our lives.

Welcome July!!.

We look forward to July for more sunshine and warm weather and many unforgetta-ble moments for our residents. July is filled with activities including visitors who bring us delicious treats, outing to residents’ favorite places and church festivals. Our most important mission this summer is to fulfill as many wishes of our residents as possible and bring them joy.
