President's Message
It was an ordinary Friday night high school football game in Helena, Arkansas, in 1959. After eatingour pre-game staples of roast beef, green beans and dry toast, we journeyed to the stadium for pre-game. As rain began to fall, a coach instructed us to get in a ditch to get wet so we would forgetabout the elements. By kickoff, the wind had increased to 20 miles per hour while the temperaturedropped over 30 degrees. Sheets of ice were forming on our faces. Our head coach took the team tothe locker room and gave us instructions for the game as we stood in the hot showers until it wastime to go on the field. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, the officials tried to get both teams to cancelthe game. Our coach said, "Men, they want us to cancel. If we do, the score will stand 6-0 in favorof Jonesboro." There was a silence broken by his words, "I know you don't want to get beat 6-0."Well, we finished the game and the final score was 13-0 in favor of Jonesboro. Forty-five years later,it is still the coldest game I have ever been in.

No one likes to lose, but for every victory, there is a loss. As coaches, we must use every situation toteach about life and how champions handle both the good and the bad. I am blessed to workwith coaches who care about each and every player. They will challenge, teach and encouragethese athletes on a daily basis.

It has been an honor to serve as your president for the past year. May God continue to use each ofus to teach leadership through the great game of football.
To close, I would like to quote President Teddy Roosevelt:
"It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or wherethe doer of deeds could have done better.

Code of Ethics
Ever since the AFCA formulated its first formal Code of Ethics in 1952, the organization has had akeen awareness of its importance and has done all in its power to keep the public aware of theAFCA's concern with morality and integrity.
A complete copy of the Code of Ethics is published every year in the AFCA Directory which is sent toevery member. Vital tenets include:
PREAMBLE:
The distinguishing characteristic of a profession is its dedication to the service of humanity.
Those who select football coaching must understand that the justification for football lies in itsspiritual and physical values and that the game belongs, essentially, to the players.
The welfare of the game depends on how the coaches live up to the spirit and letter of ethicalconduct and how the coaches remain ever mindful of the high trust and confidence placed in themby their players and the public.
Coaches unwilling or unable to comply with the principles of the Code have no place in theprofession.
All coaches should study the Code regularly and its principles should always be followed. Violationsof the Code should be reported to the Ethics Committee.
PURPOSE:
The Code of Ethics has been developed to protect and promote the best interests of the game andthe coaching profession. Its primary purpose is to clarify and distinguish ethical and approvedprofessional practices from those considered detrimental.
Its secondary purpose is to emphasize the purpose and value of football and to stress the properfunctions of coaches in relation to schools, players and the public.
Tuss McLaughry Award Winners

The Tuss McLaughry Award, established in 1964, honors distinguished Americans for their serviceto others. It is named in honor of DeOrmond "Tuss" McLaughry, the first full-time secretary-treasurer of the AFCA and one of the most dedicated and influential members in the history of theAssociation.

Former SMU, North Texas, and Iowa Head Coach Hayden Fry is the 2005 recipient of the AFCA'sAmos Alonzo Stagg Award, honoring those "whose services have been outstanding in theadvancement of the best interests of football."
The award will be presented to Fry at the AFCA's Awards Luncheon on January 11 at the 2005AFCA Convention in Louisville, KY.
"As a young guy growing up, Amos Alonzo Stagg was my hero. You saw the old film clips of him, PopWarner, Knute Rockne, and you wanted to emulate them," Fry said. "To me it's the highest honor acoach can receive. It's a tribute to outstanding coaches and players I worked with. A real tribute tothose people. They were the ones who had to execute the plan."
Fry is the first coach with ties to SMU, North Texas or Iowa to receive the AFCA's most prestigiousaward.
Fry retired from coaching in 1998 after 39 illustrious seasons in college football. His record: 232-178-10. At retirement, he ranked No. 4 in active Division I career wins and No. 10 all-time. He isone of 16 Division I coaches to amass 200 or more career victories. Prior to stepping down, Fry hadcoached more games (420) than any active Division I coach and he was fourth all-time in gamescoached.
Fry also ranks No. 4 all-time in Big Ten wins and he is one of only six coaches in Big Ten history tocoach 20 seasons in the league, joining award namesake Amos Alonzo Stagg (Chicago), Illinois'Bob Zuppke, Ohio State's Woody Hayes, Minnesota's Henry Williams and Michigan's BoSchembechler in that select group.
A 2003 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Fry earned conference Coach of the Yearhonors in three different leagues--Big Ten (three times), Southwest (four) and the Missouri Valley(one).
But Fry made his biggest impact on college football off the field when he broke the color barrier inthe Southwest Conference by recruiting receiver Jerry Levias to SMU in 1965. Levias joined Fryin the 2003 College Football Hall of Fame induction class.
Fry gained his greatest national notoriety for his work in building the Iowa football program into
one of the best in the Big 10.
When he arrived at Iowa in 1979, the Hawkeyes had suffered through 18 consecutive non-winningseasons. Over the next 20 years, he guided the Hawkeyes to 14 first division finishes, three Big Tentitles and Rose Bowl appearances, and was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year three times (1981,1990, 1991). Fry took Iowa to 14 bowl games in his last 18 seasons.
The accomplishments of Fry and his Iowa teams didn't go unnoticed. Along with being named BigTen Coach of the Year three times, he was named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 1981 and1990.
At SMU, Fry coached 11 years (1962-72), winning the Southwest Conference championship in 1966.He was athletic director his last nine years with the Mustangs.
Fry was the head coach and AD for six years (1973-78) at North Texas, taking an ailing program andmaking it a big winner (33-11) his final four years. His record at North Texas was 40-23-3.
Fry served as a member of the AFCA's Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1993 and as the Association'spresident in his final year.
