SYMBOLS OF LENT ON THE CROSS
On this day of celebration, all of the symbols from Lent have been re-
moved and has been replaced with a white cloth. The body of Christ was
buried in a white burial cloth and on the morning of the third day of his
death, his friends discovered an empty tomb, except for the lone burial cloth
that was no longer needed!
LENTEN OFFERING
The children who attended our Lenten Family Gathering went home with
an offering box to put money in it throughout the season of Lent. This past
Sunday our children brought the boxes forward and placed them on the Re-
membrance Table during our Palm Sunday Worship. The amount raised
was $84.60. This money is going to the Rutherford County Backpack Pro-
gram to help feed hungry children in Rutherford County.
COTTONELLE TOILET PAPER ROLLS NEEDED
If any of you use the brand of Cottonelle toilet paper, we would like for
you to save the paper rolls after you have finished with them. They will be
used for a special Advent project for our children in November and we will
need 25 per child! Please give any that you have to Beth Heffner. Thank
you!

PASTOR’S COLUMN
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discuss-
ing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'A little while, and you will no
longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? Very truly, I tell
you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, be-
cause her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remem-
bers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will
rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day you will ask noth-
ing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.
Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. (John 16:19-24,
NRSV)
Childbirth and childbearing are painfully excruciating tasks. No, I haven’t
experienced it, but I’ve been with many as they have journeyed through the
expectations, struggles, and pains of pregnancy. I watched a bit on Good
Morning America as current Dancing with the Stars contestant Nancy Kerri-
gan recounted the trauma of six miscarriages that occurred between the birth
of her first and second sons. During that bit, a doctor shared that 15-20% of all
pregnancies end in miscarriage. We have heard stories of Duchess Catherine
(Kate Middleton) suffering hyperemesis during her pregnancies. You’ve heard
of morning sickness. Hyperemesis means nausea and vomiting all day, not just
in the morning and many times, not limited to the first trimester of pregnancy.
Rebecca spent days in the hospital with both John Alan and Natalie during her
first trimester, just getting fluids.
Then there’s childbirth. In the ancient world, in the time of Jesus, it is esti-
mated that one out of three pregnancies ended in the death of the mother. Not
only is carrying the child painful, but the birth of the child is excruciating.
Excruciating – there’s that word again. We use that word to designate any
kind of pain that is so intense, either in feeling or in duration, that is unbear-
able. But look at the root of the word. We get words like, crucifixion, cruci-
form, crucible. That is, this word, used as an adjective, designates pain to the
extent of the pain experienced during crucifixion.
Why do women endure the discomfort, pain, and drain associated with preg-
nancy? Why is it so painful when something does not go as planned? Why
would someone go through agony for a short while? Because, the end is a
child. The end is new life.
Jesus prepared the disciples for the agony of the cross with the expectation
of new life. And when that life comes, no one will take away the joy. When we
celebrate Holy Week, may we be reminded as we experience the agony of
journeying through the darkness of the day of Christ’s death, and as we see the
glory of Christ exposing our darkness and the darkness of our world know that
the end is new life – life eternal and life abundant.

Morning Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer John Miller
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil:
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
