Fire Pump Schematic diagram

a. Provide strainer (ST) upstream of gate valve (GV OS&Y) at the suction of pumps.

b. The strainer arrangement shall be in compliance with NFPA 20 clause 3-3.4

c. Provide reducer and expander at the suction and discharge of the pumps as generally the suction and discharge sizes of pumps will be smaller than the suction & discharge pipeline. Suction reducer should be of eccentric type.

d. Provide automatic air release valve per NFPA 20 sec 3-3.3

e. Provide relief valve size and relief valve discharge pipe size per NFPA 20 table 2-20

f. Provide drain valve upstream of check valve, between check valve (CV) and gate valve (GV OS&Y), at the pump discharge.

g. Recommended meter device size is 5” for 500 GPM flow per NFPA 20 table 2-20. Change the pipeline size also accordingly.

h. The metering device arrangement shall be in compliance with NFPA 20 fig A-2-14.1.2(a) & (b) as applicable.

i. The fire pump sequence of operation is not clear. Also the schematic doesn’t show the pressure switches as required for the automatic operation of the pumps. The logic should clearly specify at what pressure which pump will start and stop.

j. Provide a drain at the lowest point in the piping and a vent valve at the highest point in the piping.

Domestic

a. At the pump discharge line, Check Valve (CV) needs to be provided down steam of the gate valve (GV).

b. Show the details of provision made to add air to the pressure tank (Hydro-pneumatic tank)

pump Schematic diagram

for example by a dedicated air compressor or by air charging system. Also provide the details of air volume control system for the hydro-pneumatic tank.

c. The sequence of operation for domestic pumps needs to be elaborated giving the function and its operating logic for Hydro-pneumatic tank. Also the schematic doesn’t show pressure switch for the automatic operation of pumps.

d. Pump suction and discharge pipe size need to be furnished.

Submersible pump

Schematic diagram

The schematic diagram doesn’t show gate valve at the discharge of the pumps and also the location of check valve (CV) is shown inside the water level. Each pump to be provided with pressure gauge, check valve and gate valve above the maximum water level and the discharge from two pumps will then join to form the force main.

a. Since the outlet of metering device is connected back to the tank, the piping arrangement shall meet the “exception” condition as specified in NFPA 20 clause A-2.14.2.1

b. Location of the safety valve and its discharge piping arrangement need to be shown in this drawing.
