When you think of a hearing aid, you probably picture a small

device attached to the outer ear. It includes a miniature microphone to pick up sounds and amplify them, and is powered by batteries that are replaced or recharged each week.

At Summit Medical Group, we offer a large selection of this kind of hearing aid, but we’re also now offering something very different: An “invisible” hearing aid. This state-of-the-art device is invisible to others because it nestles unobtrusively in the ear canal and stays there around- the-clock for up to four months.

Called the Lyric, the hearing aid does not have to be removed for bathing or sleeping. Our audiologists custom-fit and implant the extended-wear hearing aid in patients who want the convenience and flexibility of this new technology.

“Many of our patients who have switched to the extended-wear device say that it changed their life in terms of improved hearing quality, comfort, and ease of use,” says Jed Kwartler, MD, director of the Summit Medical Group Ear Specialty Center. “They find that sounds are more natural with the extended-wear hearing aid.”

A hearing professional sets the volume when the Lyric is inserted, but users can adjust the volume themselves using a controller that fits on a keychain. The Lyric doesn’t work for everyone, however, because it requires that the ear canal be a certain shape and length.

‘Invisible’ Hearing Aid expands patients’ Options

Do you have a hearing problem? Summit Medical Group audiologists can assess your hearing and your medical conditions so you can be in on the conversation again. Call 908-277-8868 or visit www.summitmedicalgroup.com/service/Audiology.

“Patients appreciate Lyric because no one can tell that they are wearing a hearing aid,” says Dr. Kwartler. “They also like the convenience, because we can size and fit someone with an extended hearing aid in about 20 minutes, as opposed to a traditional hearing aid, which requires an initial fitting, ordering of the aid, and then a wait of several weeks for the device to arrive.”

Personal preferences play a major role in the choice of any hearing aid. What is comfortable for one user might be a bad fit for someone else. Summit Medical Group is well-suited to finding a solution that fits your needs.

We provide individualized treatment plans and comprehensive services from a multispecialty team of ENTs (medical doctors specializing in ear, nose, and throat health); otologists (ENTs with additional fellowship training in ear-related disorders); and audiologists (specialists who test for hearing loss and custom-fit hearing aids). The team treats people of all ages, from newborns to seniors, with simple or complex hearing loss.

Don’t Wait to Find Out MoreTo learn if the Lyr ic hear ing aid is for you—or someone you know— scan the QR tag at r ight using the Microsof t Tag Reader on your smar t phone. (If you aren’t set up for this yet, go to the link at r ight to get the free app for your phone.) And what if you don’t have a smar t phone? What Causes Hearing Loss?Is hearing loss inevitable as you age?

“Many factors contribute to hearing loss, including noise exposure, trauma, infections, tumors, medications, and increased age,” says Jed Kwartler, MD, an otolologist/neurotologist at Summit Medical Group.

No matter what your age, when it comes to maintaining ear health, prevention is crucial.

“If you listen to electronic devices, keep the volume at a moderate level to avoid permanent damage, and if you are at a concert or other environments with loud noises, buy earplugs at the drugstore and wear them to protect your ears,” says Jeff Le Benger, MD, an ENT and chairman of Summit Medical Group.

usually be treated with a lumpectomy, which removes only the lump and some surrounding tissue. Most of your breast will be spared.

For larger or advanced cancers, surgeons may perform a mastectomy, removing the entire breast. Newer methods preserve your nipple or other natural breast tissue. You can often have your breast reconstructed during the same operation.

During your operation, your surgeon may also take out lymph nodes from under your arms to check for cancer cells. A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests most women with early-stage cancer

What to expect After a Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Every three minutes, a woman hears the words, “You have breast

cancer.” After that, it’s hard to think about next steps. But a diagnosis is just the beginning of a path through treat-ment and toward recovery.

cHoosING Your treatmeNtEach woman’s journey will be different. You and your oncologist will consider your age, health, and family history. Tests such as X-rays and CT or PET scans will determine how far your cancer has spread.

After your oncologist suggests a course of treatment, you may want to get a second opinion. Learning about your options can boost confidence in your deci-sions. You can then choose to switch doctors or stay with your initial plan.

facING surGerYThough treatment plans vary, most women will have surgery to take out their tumor. Early-stage cancers can

need only one or two lymph nodes removed. This lessens side effects, such as arm pain and swelling.

coNsIderING otHer optIoNsYou might have other treatments before, after, or instead of surgery. These target cancer from the inside and include:• Radiationtherapy:High-energy

rays or particles destroy cancer cells• Chemotherapy: Medications either

kill cancer cells or prevent them from dividing

• Hormonetherapy: Medications block the action of hormones such as estrogen, which causes most breast cancers to grow

• Targetedtherapy: Drugs use genetic information to identify and attack cancer cells without harming normal cells; they work differently from chemotherapy and often have less severe side effectsYour oncologist may also ask you

about participating in a clinical trial. These are studies of brand-new thera-pies or approaches, and participants often get state-of-the-art treatment.

after treatmeNtAfter you’ve followed your plan, you may be relieved it’s over and frightened the cancer will come back. You’ll continue seeing your oncologist for follow-up appointments. He or she will ask how you’re feeling and do tests that check for treatment side effects or cancer’s spread or return.

The good news: As medicine advanc-es, more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before. About nine in 10 will live five years or longer. Doctors now know that most women can lead normal lives and have children after breast cancer treatment.

Summit Medical Group’s Breast Care Center of Excellence encourages com-

prehensive breast health care through the clinical breast exam (CBE)—an exam performed by a healthcare provider—in conjunction with your annual mammo-gram and breast self-exam.

A CBE is an important component of our comprehensive breast cancer screen-ing. While mammograms are the best available method for early detection of breast cancer, a CBE can detect small invasive breast cancers that may not show up via mammogram alone.

To ensure high-quality, evidence-based care consistent with our mission, Summit Medical Group strongly recommends that you have a clinical breast exam along with your yearly mammogram.

wHo sHould Have a clINIcal breast exam? Women in their 20s and 30s should have a CBE as part of their annual checkup with their healthcare profes-sional. Women 40 and older should have a CBE performed in conjunction with their annual screening mammogram. At this time, your provider will write you a prescription for your annual mammogram.

Get the Lowdown on High-Deductible Insurance

You may have heard of high deduct-ible health insurance—also called consumer-directed health care. A high deductible insurance plan seeks to drive down healthcare costs by placing more of the responsibility and cost burden on consumers.

The plans work like this: Insurance companies do not begin their contribu-tion to claim reimbursement until the subscriber pays a significant level of deductible, sometimes up to $6,000 per year. Since the premiums for high-deductible healthcare plans cost much less than traditional health plans, con-sumers are encouraged to invest the difference in their pretax contribution to a health savings account, or HSA, which they can use for routine and out-of-pocket health care expenses.

The rationale is that, if the patients see that their healthcare dollar is com-ing directly out of their own pocket, they will demand to receive the best quality care they can find.

While these consumers represent a fraction of Americans enrolled in private health insurance plans, this share is growing quickly. If your company is mov-ing toward a consumer-directed health-care plan, or if they have already made the move, ask the following questions:• Do you have a pre-existing condition? There may be a waiting period prior to eligibility with some plans.

• How do you set up an HSA? With a health savings account, consumers and employers make tax-advantaged con-tributions that the consumer uses to pay out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

• What is the level of deductible plan offered? The plan needs to be more than $1,050 to qualify for the health savings account minimum.Call your insurance company or

your employee benefits representative with any questions. After all, it’s your money and—most importantly—it’s your health.

How Is a cbe performed?During a CBE, your healthcare pro-vider will carefully palpate your breasts and under your arms to check for lumps and other changes. Performed in coordination with mammograms, the clinical breast exam offers women and their healthcare providers an opportu-nity to discuss changes in their breasts and risk factors for breast cancer.

wHat HappeNs Next?If any changes in your breast are

discovered during your CBE or mammo-gram, our certified breast health nurse navigators are ready to help. They will ensure that you get timely access to breast care services and information. They will coordinate your care to help you get a timely appointment with one of our breast specialists, to provide information about your upcoming tests, and to offer support. Our goal is to help ensure that you have a satisfying healthcare experience.

ing the best pair for your feet. They should fit comfortably, leaving a half-inch to an inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

• Socksthatwickmoisture. Unlike cotton socks, these keep your feet dry and reduce friction, protecting you from blisters.

• Agoodrunningsurface. A route that’s clear, smooth, even, and relatively soft will keep you striding injury-free. A rubber track or dirt path is best.Search for a training program online that comes from a

reliable source, starts slowly, and builds over time. For example, walkers might start by jogging for two minutes and then walking five minutes, for a total of about 20 minutes. Repeat this routine three to four times a week. Gradually increase your running until you’re jogging for 20 to 30 minutes.

Take care not to increase your time or mileage by more than 10 percent per week. Running too much, too soon increases your risk for injury. Balance longer or harder runs with shorter, easier sessions.

Doing 20 to 30 minutes of other aerobic activities on the days you’re not running can help you build endurance. Make sure to have at least one or two rest days per week.
