LENTEN DISCOVERIES

“A Transfiguring Vision” Brother Roger I was unable to attend Lisa Hall’s Lenten presenta-tion last week. I have always admired the spirit of Taize. Taize style music and prayer seem synony-mous with candlelight and mantra-like refrains. But they really transcend “atmosphere” and “feeling.” I find them, as many do, a “transfiguring” experience. What the late Brother Roger, the founder of the Taize ecumenical brotherhood, envisioned was “a community where simplicity and kind-heartedness would be lived out as essential Gospel realities.” After the horror of World War II, Taize’s vision was not unlike Shangrila - - the Himalayan valley of peace and gentleness described in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon. Brother Roger’s Shangrila was Christian. It became a dramatic sign of reconciliation between confessionally divided Christians and a destinaton for pilgrims. Taize welcomed Pope John Paul II, three Archbishops of Canterbury, Orthodox metropolitans, and no less than fourteen Lutheran bishops of Sweden. In addition to pastors and other religious leaders, Taize has become the destination for many young adults and “seekers” of all ages. In 1978, while on a driv-ing tour of France, I stopped briefly - - not for any-thing official - - but to gather impressions. In a small Romanesque chapel, I experienced the “Jesus Prayer” for the first time. In the main Chapel, a large icon of Our Lady of Vladimir was festooned with gar-lands of flowers and devotional candles were still lit. There had been a Marian service earlier in the day. I was surprised and encouraged by the thought of ecumenical tributes to the Blessed Virgin.

Taize’s Catholic and Evangelical roots make Bible study and reflection a key feature of its unifying ap-peal. The international ethos of Taize is welcoming to all. It offers a “healing” remedy to a divided and wounded world. Brother Roger was a unique figure and a constant reminder of how the Holy Spirit is at work even amid the things that divide us. Brother Roger was a Protestant who was as close to unity with Rome as any Protestant could be. He once said in St. Peter’s Basilica in the presence of Pope John Paul II: “I have found my own identity as a Christian by rec-onciling within myself the faith of my origins with the mystery of the Catholic faith, without breaking fellow-ship with anyone.” Tragically, this man of peace and “bridge-builder” of Christian unity, was stabbed to death by a deranged fanatic while at Evening Prayer. Brother Roger’s funeral was presided over by Cardinal Kasper. The Cardinal paid tribute to the gentle Protestant monk: “Yes, the springtime of ecumenism has flowered on the hill of Taize.” Brother Roger’s vision was indeed “transfiguring.” Kathryn Spink, in A Universal Heart, provides the perfect endnote to this week’s Lenten Discovery. We of the Taize community look upon the transfigu-ration above all as the celebration of that presence of Christ which takes charge of everything in us and transfigures even that which disturbs us about our-selves. God penetrates those hardened, incredu-lous, even disquieting regions within us, about which we really do not know what to do. God penetrates them with the life of the Spirit and acts upon those regions and gives them God’s own face. - Fr. Luczak

MARDI GRAS DINNER

On Sunday, February 19th, Sonia Martyniuk, Gino Espisito and four of their guests enjoyed a Pre-Lenten Dinner Party at the Rectory. They had made the winning bid of $400 at the Women’s Club Wine Tasting Event for a dinner for six cooked and served by Fr. Luczak.

The evening began with Proseco or Kir Royale Cocktails and an assortment of hors d’ oeuvres including Osetra Caviar on Blini, Caponata on toasted pita bread and Roasted Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto. The Menu also included a Roasted Shrimp Salad with Blood Orange-Fennel Vinaigrette, Mushroom Encrusted Rib Eye Roast Dijon-naise, Potato-Celery Root Puree, Haricot Vert and Waxed Beans in Dill Chive Butter and Mocha-Kahlua Tiramisu. Three of the wines purchased at the auction were served in the course of the meal.

The food and wine were contributed by Fr. Luczak personally. In the spirit of all fundraisers, the dinner cost the parish nothing. The result was “all profit, no expenses.” Merci!

The Women’s Center Bulletin Announcement for March, 2012 February 22nd marked the beginning of Lent. During Lent with sadness we contemplate the agony and death of Jesus, but we also think joyfully of His resurrection. Similarly, many women in unplanned pregnancies are troubled and sad. They come to The Women’s Center and receive help, counseling and prayers. They are filled with joy af-ter they give birth and cradle their baby in their arms. In 2011 we saved over 1,000 babies and saved their moth-ers from the agony of abortion. If you wish to volunteer your time and talents, we need help sorting donations and assisting clients in our Chi-cago Family Resource Room on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon. To help, call Jackie at 773-794-8807. We have a need for maternity clothing. Diapers in sizes 5 and 6 are also needed. These must be delivered to us unless accompanied by baby furniture. We desperately need 5 fixed side baby cribs, all sizes of baby crib sheets, 7 infant/carrier car seats, 4 pack n plays, 2 changing tables, 4 double strollers, 5 single strollers and 3 bassinets. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up is needed, please call 773-794-1313. Due to limited space we are unable to accept anything except the items listed. The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity.

SPIRITUAL LIFE LENT WEEK II (Light a candle and/or have a crucifix with you as you pray.) Scripture: “While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5) Reflection: “…the next step to fully participating in the liturgy is to be at Mass with an open heart and open mind, expecting God to communicate with us. With that in mind I would like to propose a simple approach that could change the whole way we experience the Mass. When you walk into Mass next Sunday, simply ask God I the quiet of your heart, ‘God, show me one way in this Mass that I can become a-better-version-of-myself this week!’ Then listen. Listen to what God is saying to you in the music, the readings, and the homily. Listen to the prayers of the Mass, and listen to the quiet of your heart. The one way will strive you. Once it is revealed to you, spend the rest of the Mass holding that one way prayerfully in your heart. We don’t go to Mass to socialize. We don’t go to be entertained. We go to give ourselves to God, and in return to receive God. Open your heart, open your mind, and open your soul to the miracles God wants to work in and through you. Mass is not about whom you sit next to. It’s not about which priest says Mass. It is not about what you wear or who is there. Mass is not about the music. It’s not even about the preaching. It’s about gathering as a community to give thanks to God for all the blessings he fills our lives with. It is about receiving the body and blood of Christ, not just physically, but spiritually. This week as you prepare yourself to celebrate the Mass on Sunday, be conscious of the marvel, the wonder, the mys-tery of the Mass. Open your heart and mind to hearing what God offers you this day – your one way.” Meditation: Do I find Mass to be an integral part of my faith life or am I simply going through the motions? What impact does the Word of God have on me as I attend Sunday Mass; do I allow the readings to penetrate into my heart and soul? What area in my life needs special attention right now; will I ask God to show me the way to attend to that area this Lent? How well do I know the prayers of the Mass; have I paid attention to the changes in the prayers that began at Advent? Do I have a favorite prayer in the Mass; what about this prayer resonates with me? Prayer: Almighty Father, each time we attend Mass we remember the sacrifice made by your son, Jesus, who died that we might be saved. May I cherish the chance to worship you each week at Sunday liturgy, and encour-age others to love and understand this powerful prayer of the Church. Amen. (from Rediscover Lent by Matthew Kelly, c2011) RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS At the 10:30 Mass next Sunday, our Elect, Anthony Green will go through the first of three scrutinies during which we will pray for him as he examines his life and asks the Lord to fill him with the living water Jesus promised the woman at the well. The Scripture readings at that Mass, and for the following two weekends –9 a.m. on Mar. 18 and 7:30 a.m. on Mar. 25, will be from Cycle A as those Gospels are very focused on the meaning and effects of baptism. Please continue to pray for Anthony as he journeys to the waters of baptism and life in Christ and with the Church. “PRAYING AROUND THE TABLE” The last Soup Supper and Presentation will be held this Thursday, March 8th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. As of this writing we are still working out the presentation, which will begin at 7 p.m. RSVP by signing up in the Holy Family Room today or calling the RE Office by Tuesday, 847/966-1180. If you don’t have a chance to call, you are welcome anyway. Free will donations will be gratefully accepted!

PARISH LENTEN MISSION: “WHERE ALL ROADS LEAD” Our Parish Mission for Lent, “Where All Roads Lead” begins TODAY. Come join us as our speakers share their spiritual journeys and draw us to reflect on our own. Discover anew how all roads lead to Christ. The schedule is as follows: Sunday, 3:00 p.m.: “LOVE SCRIPTS: How to Read God’s Handwriting” w/Fr. Britto

Berchmans, Pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge. “We begin our spiritual journey when we recognize that God not only loves me, but is in love with me. I need to develop the capacity to recognize God’s handwriting as He sends me his love-notes every day.” Monday, 9:30 a.m.: Video of Fr. Berchmans’ presentation, Holy Family Room 7:00 p.m.: “The Trinity and Me – How the Holy Spirit Channeled Passion For Me” w/ Fr. Dennis O’Neill, Pastor of St. Martha Parish in Morton Grove. “I think I only began to know my passion in my second year of theology. A research course on the Holy Trinity was the catalyst that fired up my spirit. Every-thing that has unfolded in my life since then can be traced back to that initial epiphany experience. I have ex-plored many sorts of spirituality on my journey. Each has taught me more about the plan Christ has for my life, and I have never been disappointed with the way my faith/life journey has unfolded.” Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.: Video of Fr. O’Neill’s presentation, Holy Family Room 7:00 p.m.: “Encountering God in the Stories of Our Lives” w/Fr. Dominic Grassi, Pastor of St. Gertrude Parish in Chicago. “Each of us by virtue of our baptism were told that we were baptized into the priesthood of Jesus Christ and are called to minister to one another. One way to do that is to get in touch with the stories of our life, share them with each other and together find how they connect to the Story that is Je-sus as we find him in our daily lives and in Scripture and the traditions of our church. Lent is the time to do this.” Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.: Video of Fr. Grassi’s presentation, Holy Family Room. 7:00 p.m.: “Where All Roads Lead…” w/our Pastor, Fr. Andrew Luczak, who will preside at the celebration of the Eucharist. “There is no express lane to heaven. But there are many roads that can take us there. Some take the “high road.” Some take the “low road.” Life, with all its twists and turns, is most like a labyrinth. Just when we seem most lost in the maze or at a dead end, the right turn will take us to our desired destination. St. Catherine of Siena once said: ‘The path to haven lies through heaven, and all the way to heaven is heaven because Christ is the Way.’ Christ knows what is the best road for each of us. He meets us on the way. On the way to heaven, we have a taste of heaven. It is following our bliss. It is to recognize Christ – WHERE ALL ROADS LEAD!”

Thursday, 9:30 a.m.: Video of Mass and Fr. Luczak’s presentation, Holy Family Room.

ALMSGIVING

+In connection with the St. Joseph Table next week, the alms given will benefit the many good works of our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry to assist those in need. If you come to the St. Joseph Table you can leave your donation there. If you cannot come to the St. Joseph Table, your gift can be placed in the alms boxes at the doors of the church. Thank you for your generosity. +The weekend of March 17-18 we will be supporting EYEsee—an all student-run international health mission to the poor in Third World countries by donating eyeglasses. All eyeglasses collected during this year’s drive will be distributed during health missions this year to some of the poorest countries in Asia, the Pacific Is-lands, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa. Students from St. Viator High School will be here that weekend to receive your donations and to answer questions about EYEsee’s work and mission. Please bring in your prescription and reading eyeglasses and sunglasses. Children’s glasses are especially needed. Recy-cled eyeglasses can help thousands experience corrected vision. Give the ‘gift of sight’ to the poor! Please check with your family, relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to see if they would have donations for you to bring in! Please note that they cannot accept monetary donations.

Sacrifice

If we must climb the mountain Haunted by glorious past

In the land of Moriah What shall we leave behind?

Who shall we sacrifice? If we must die a thousand deaths

In the Place of Skulls Are we ready to be fed

to the dogs? If we must live one more day

Despite of everything Will our lips still be full of praise

And heart softened by God’s Word?

PARISH LIFE ST. JOSEPH TABLE All are invited to share in the St. Joseph Table next weekend, March 11th! This tradition gives glory to God, honors St. Joseph, encourages community building and assists the needy. While a meatless table we will have a wonderful array of pastas, egg dishes, fish, vegetables, fruits, sweets, breads, and beverages. All the food will have been donated through the generosity of parishioners, interested friends and local businesses. There is no charge to come and eat at the St. Joseph Table. Donations will be gratefully accepted to help the efforts of our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry reach out to the poor. If you made a promise of food (meatless of course) and it does not need to be refrigerated overnight, please bring it to the Parish Hall on Saturday, March 10th, between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Otherwise all food donations need to be brought to the Parish Hall on Sunday, March 11th, from 7:00 – 10:30 a.m. in order to finish final preparations of the table. We will have runners near the Holy Family Room on Sunday to carry the food in for you, if you would like. Because we will be making preparations on Sunday morning, no one will be able to come and view the table until it is time for the blessing and the serving of food (food donations will be take at the door at the bottom of the stairs). The St. Joseph Table celebration begins with the Noon Mass on March 11th, followed by the blessing of the Table and the serving of the food, 1:30-4:30 p.m. The line to come down to the Table will form in the Holy Family Room as only so many can be served at one time. If you are not part of the initial group that comes down, you will hopefully be able to hear the blessing over the sound system in the Holy Family Room. Every-one’s patience and cooperation will be appreciated! Kindly follow the guidance of our Men’s Club! Donations of food are still welcome, particularly vegetables and meatless dishes. Please contact Santa Di-Franco, 847/966-1802 or Dee Stanton, 847-966-1180, or just bring it to the Parish Hall per the schedule given above. Helpers are still welcome (Saturday and Sunday) and we are in need of a Nesco Roaster or two. Please call Dee to offer your assistance.

BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put peo-ple’s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give per-mission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person’s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
