We were privileged to have the company of Malcolm and Margaret Patterson from the Theatre Organ

Society at the Capri Theatre with us at our brekky meeting this week. Malcolm gave us an amazing

presentation about how the current organ came to be at the Capri which included some tunes played by

some pretty slick musicians.

President Greg & Malcolm Patterson

He started his presentation with a number called Pine Top Boogie by Tony Fenelon and Lyn Larson which

flowed into a brief background of how the first organ was purchased by the Society from the Regent

Theatre in Melbourne. This organ was installed into Wyatt Hall at Pultney Grammar School where it stayed

for 28 years on a handshake agreement!!

Their current organ came from a guy called Mike Pfitzner of Darwin who wanted to have the organ setup in

his home to play but could never do so due to humidity. The Society purchased the organ in 1974 for

$6600.The organ was put into storage as the Society had nowhere to put it but in 1978 they purchased the

Capri Theatre from a long lost relative or Malcolm’s for $165,000 (where it has stayed since). Malcolm

described how an Aussie movie that came out in 1988 and played continuously for 12 months paid off their

mortgage on the theatre, a classic called Crocodile Dundee!!

The actual installation of the organ was completed in 1983 and we were shown images of how the theatre

looked then and how it looks now. It actually sits on a car lift which is how it sinks into the stage prior to a

movie or show starting.

I, for one, admit that any time I go to the Capri I hope to see and hear this amazing organ being played as it

adds to the experience of going to a show. The people that actually play the organ are incredible musicians

which was shown a few times throughout the presentation when they were shown playing the 4 keyboards

and playing with the many switches to change to sound coming from the pipes. Thank you Malcolm for

coming in with this fantastic insight into an Adelaide institution!!

Good to see sergeant Kirsty back from the set of Wolf Creek 2. She ran a quick game of heads or tails after

the presentation followed by some pretty shrewd fines. Well done Kirsty and thanks members for your

generosity. A quick thanks to all who helped at the market on Sunday where we made over $500 and well

done to the Market Committee on a great morning.

Have a great week everyone!!

A quick notice to Directors, board meeting next week will be 6.30pm for 6.45pm start a slight delay with the

room.

Australian History:

1851 – The first payable gold is discovered in Australia.

World History:

1977 – The largest lobster on record is caught: it weighs nearly 20.2kg and is around a metre long.

1999 – President Bill Clinton is acquitted by the United States Senate in his impeachment trial.

2002 – The war crimes trial of former Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milošević, begins.

Thought for the Day 1:

People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.

Thought for the Day 2:

Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?

Has Gary been approached to fill the upcoming vacancy in the Catholic Church (Pope Gary I)???

Certainly his services would be highly valued in the Vatican.

However, his services are more highly valued in our Rotary Club according to President Greg.
