The Army of Hope (AOH) is a program of the Elks. It was established in Florida in 2007 and was designed to help families of our deployed military who have run in to everyday problems. The mission is to provide aid and assistance to families of disabled and deployed members of the military. An active-duty member stationed in Florida with his/her dependents qualify as a FL resident.
Since its inception in FL, the Army of Hope has raised $620,208 and distributed $508,591. The help we give through AOH allows the military member to safely concentrate on his/her duties without worrying about the family back home. It also assists returning vets with costs to re-establish their civilian life.
Examples of aid include, but are not limited to, providing funds for the following:
• Medical and dental expenses not covered by insurance• Minor home repairs• Auto repairs, or transportation when needed• Full-time or back-up babysitting• Phone cards to contact loved ones• Lawn mowing, landscaping, sprinkler repairs, • Clothing, shoes• Past due bills incurred as a result of deployment
Requests for assistance are submitted to the nearest Elks Lodge.
To assist with this effort, the West Central District (WCD) Lodges will be holding an Oktoberfest Fundraiser in the Grove at Largo Lodge on Sunday, October 24 from noon – 4 p.m. Admission tickets are $5 and available at the bar. Largo Lodge and our Veterans Committee will be hosting the event.
Food will be available to purchase. There will be live music, a beer truck, cornhole tournament, turkey shoot, games for kids, face painting, rock painting, arts and craft vendors, and much more.
There will also be a basket auction. The baskets will be on display on Friday, October 22 and Saturday, the 23rd in the small dining room; tickets on the baskets will be available during those times. The auction will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Volunteers are needed. Please contact Georgia Greene, WCD AOH Vice-Chairman, at [email protected] or myself at [email protected] or 727-743-1387 if you can help out for an hour or two. Thank you!

We’re sure you must have noticed the repairs to one of our pool tables. Thanks to the generosity of Nick Camera,
John Mensinga, Dennis Monahan, Mack Moon, and Ed O’Malley for their donation.
It’s a beautiful blue. They decided to have the improvements made and they paid to have it done!! It looks great and
is ready for action. These 5 pool players are not only the best, but also the most generous!!! THANK YOU. Rick Huffstutter

This club is made up of members who have donated money to help with the cost of printing and mailing the bul-letin. We are very low on donors to this endeavor in comparison to our membership. This is a strictly voluntary donation, but with costs escalating, all donations are appreciated and put to good use. We ask for $10 per year.

LODGE OF SORROW
Please continue dropping off your manufacturers’ coupons (not Walgreens, Publix, etc.) and put them in the cabinet in the Veterans’ Hall .
The coupons are cut by volunteers (see calendar) as an on-going project of the Veterans Committee. Deb Sellars wil l then periodically mail them to various mil i tary bases abroad.
This year Donate Life America will celebrate its 28th anniversary. At this time, 118,000 people are waiting for an organ. Every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. Every day 22 people die waiting for an organ. Your organ donation could
save up to 8 lives. Your cornea donation could restore sight to 2 people. Your tissue donation could heal the lives of 75 people. Join other Elk brothers and sisters by going to www.donatelife.net to see if you can be a donor. It is very important to let our lodge secretary know if you register, since our lodge receives credit on our application for All-American Lodge recognition for each verified donor registration. The flag is not exactly red, white, and blue. The actual official colors of the American flag as defined by the Color Association of the U.S. are “white,” “Old Glory Red,” and “Old Glory Blue.” The red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
The pilot of the show “Gilligan’s Island” finished filming on the same day that President Kennedy was assassinated – November 22, 1963. That’s why you will see the United States flag flying half-staff in the distance during the opening sequence of the first-season episodes of the series.
Walmart reported that on September 11, 2011 they sold 115,000 American flags. On the same date the year before, they sold only 6,400 flags.
The U.S. flag is painted backwards on aircraft and space shuttles, with the stars on the upper right hand side, instead of the left. This creates the appearance that the flag is streaming like a real flag, flying with the wind and not against it, as the aircraft is moving forward. The flag is worn the same way on military uniforms for a similar reason, to look as if it is going forward with the soldier, never retreating.Brought to you from your Lodge Americanism Committee.

A Note From The House Committee...
We had special guests attend our Tuesday night dinner on August 24th to receive this year’s Beacon Grant of $3,500.00. This is the second year we have given the Largo Police Department this grant money. Largo Police Chief Jeffrey Undestad and Officer Joel Quattlebaum took a few minutes to thank us and explained exactly how the grant helps them provide assistance to the senior citizens of Largo. This has been a great partnership with the community. It was formed when I was looking to find a place to donate the funds from the Annual B a r t e n d e r s Blind Auction, and Georgette Insalaco, one of our members, told me about a special department within the police force that deals with the needs of senior citizens needing assistance during troubled times. That Tuesday evening, Chief Undestad told us how the department was formed and how Officer Joel heads up the task force. Officer Joel then talked about some of the types of calls they have received and how our support has helped them provide help for these senior citizens. The Beacon Grant is awarded each year to the lodge through an application to Grand Lodge. We are honored to have such a partnership with the police for the community.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOO, can you believe its October already??? Have you seen any familiar faces??? We should be seeing our friends from the north anytime soon. Hopefully, most will be here in time to party at the Halloween Party on Sunday, October 31st in the bar. Costumes are optional, but we will have a costume contest; so, put on thinking caps and dress up and have some fun. Top prize will be a gift card with a few treats too............Should be a howling good time.
The weekend after Halloween on Saturday, November 6th, is the Annual Blind Auction by the bartenders. Please plan to come as its always a good time with lots of surprising gifts to bid on. Remember, all proceeds go the Largo Police Department to care for needy senior citizens here in Largo. Any donations of items are appreciated, and can be left at the bar for us to wrap. Thanks to those who have already donated. Officers Joel and Tran will be here to help auction off the items.
Shufflers are looking for new members to come shuffle. It’s a great time and so easy to get involved. They now stream the game on 3 TV’s so it’s easy to see what’s being shot and by whom.
We are entering the busy holiday season soon so stayed tuned to enjoy all the party plans and we will keep you informed,
Until then, as always, we are keeping a stool warm for you......Your bartenders
The “End-of-Summer - Super September Specials” have been a huge success. It all started with a magical show by magician John Williams in front of a full house on Wednesday, August 25th.
“Super Saturday” continues to grow week after week with the Queen of Hearts, Team Trivia, and 3-Card Bingo. Now, with the addition of College Football and all Draft Beers $2.00 from 12 to close, it’s Super Saturday excitement all-day long!
“NFL Sunday Football” is back, and it did not disappoint. With 8 TV’s we have all the big games covered, plus, $1. Bloody Mary’s, Lunch Specials from noon to 4 and Beer Specials all day.
October promises to be even better with the return of our great friends from the north.
We will continue with $2.00 Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 1pm to 4pm and made-to-order lunch everyday by Chef Pat. We have Food and Drink Specials all weekend. Don’t forget we have dinner, music and dancing every Tuesday & Friday in the dining hall.
Fall may come a bit late to Florida, but we are going to kick it off on Sunday, October 31st with a Halloween Pot Luck Costume Party, Live Music, Spooky Punch, Mysterious Food and, at 4:30, our Buccaneers will be on our TV’s. It is a great way to end October and finally begin to cool off.
