Chapter 1Introduction
Preliminaries
2 Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance
Appliance conceptThe Plasmon UDO Archive Appliance (hereafter referred to as Appliance) provides low cost tiered archival storage. It combines the performance and simplicity of network-attached RAID with the longevity and authenticity of UDO (Ultra Density Optical). Data files are stored on and retrieved from the Appliance over a TCP/IP connection. The web interface is common across the Appliance family allowing operators to easily transfer their knowledge as archive storage needs change.
UDO technologyUDO™ (Ultra Density Optical), based on blue laser technology, is the underlying foundation to Plasmon's archive solution portfolio, including the Appliance. It’s the first storage technology specifically designed for long-term professional data archive requirements. UDO provides absolute data authenticity for any application where archived information must remain authentic and permanently unchanged. UDO has been designed and proven to deliver over a 50-year media life.
Blue lasers achieve far greater data densities, resulting in dramatically higher media capacities. First and second generation UDO products (UDO and UDO 2) have a storage capacity of 30GB and 60 GB respectively, with capacity reaching 120GB by the third generation.

Libraries
Library rangeThe following Plasmon libraries (with their Appliance model numbers in parenthesis) support the new UDO format:
• Gx-32 (AA16/AA32)
• Gx-80 (AA80/AA80A8/AA80A12)
• Gx-174 (AA174/AA174A8/AA174A12)
• G-238/438/638 (AA234/AA438/AA638)

Library componentsA library in an Appliance contains the following components:
• Dual Picker – Transfers UDO media between drives, media slots and Mailslot (IEE).
• UDO Drives – The number of UDO drives available for reading/writing media is model-dependent:
- AA16 = 1 or 2
- AA32 = 2
- AA80 = 2 or 4
- AA174 = 2, 4 or 6
- AA238/AA438/AA638 = 2, 4 or 6
• Barcode reader – Reads the unique identifier on each UDO disk.
• Media slots – Internal slots housing UDO media.
• Mailslot (IEE) – For inserting and removing UDO media.
• Server – A standard PC server board housed in the Appliance enclosure (AA238,AA438, AA638, AA80A8/AA174A8, AA80A12/AA174A12 Appliances have the unit rack mounted above the library). Controls library functions and acts as the interface between the unit and your LAN.

Front panel features
AA16, AA32, AA80 and AA174 models
Each Appliance has the following features:
• Keypad – These four keys (referred to in this manual as key 1 to key 4) allow you to access the Appliance’s menu options, control the unit (e.g. to add or remove UDO media) and alter system settings (e.g. IP address); see Conventions on page 6
• LCD panel – This displays the Appliance’s menu system, and gives feedback on instructions you issue via the keypad
• Mailslot (IEE) – This is where you insert and remove UDO media
• Library status LEDs - These indicate the “health” of the library. Software health is ascertained via the Web interface.–If library is healthy, the “heartbeat” LED blinks and system online LED is on–If there is a library error, the system online LED blinks and the blink rate of the “heartbeat” LED will change.
• On/off switch - The On/off switch is used to power the Appliance on or off.

ConventionsThis section introduces the conventions used throughout this guide.
LCD panelWhere appropriate, we’ll reproduce the text shown on the Appliance’s LCD panel:
Using the keypadYou use the keypad to interact with the Appliance. The functions of the four keys vary, depending on whether you are navigating the unit’s menu options, entering parameter settings, or confirming (or cancelling) an operation.
The last line of text on the LCD panel shows the effect of pressing a particular key. For example:
• Pressing key 1 with the following text displayed would select the displayed option – we simply say “Press sel”:
• Sometimes, pressing two or more keys can have the same effect. For example, with the screen below displayed you press key 1 or 2 to accept the currently displayed option – we just say “Press accept”:
In general:
• Pressing sel or accept selects the current option or submenu
• Pressing prev and next cycles between submenus or values in a list
• Pressing esc or cancel aborts the current operation and goes back up a level in the menu hierarchy.

Overview
Hardware installationInstalling the hardware is a simple matter of unpacking the Appliance and making power and network connections. See page 15.
Software configurationThe Appliance comes pre-installed with all the software necessary to control it. This includes:
• Keypad interface – This gives administrators and operators local access to the Appliance’s functions (to control media management functions and IP addressing).
• Web interface – This is a browser-based interface that allows suitably-privileged administrators to configure the Appliance remotely. From any machine with access to your LAN, such administrators can manage shares, users and IP settings, for example.
To get up and running, you need to use the Web interface wizard to perform some initial configuration.

OverviewThis chapter explains how to add UDO media. You can:
• Add a new data disk (for migration)
• Add a new backup disk.
Before you start, please read the following important guidelines on handling and storing UDO media:
Media handlingAlways adhere to the following guidelines:
• Handle UDO media with care
• Store in dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and heat sources in the sleeve in which it was supplied.
The table below shows the operating conditions for UDO media:

Adding UDO media
29Quick Start Guide - 810-102533-00 Rev C
Adding UDO mediaYou add UDO media to the Appliance via the Mailslot or via Direct slot access. You can:
• Add new disks (UDO RW only) for backup purposes (can only be added via the mailslot).UDO RW media can be identified by its Grey cartridge case.
Caution: It is essential that Backup media is added prior to Data media.
• Add new data disks (UDO WORM or Compliant UDO WORM only) for migration (can be added via the mailslot or direct slot access).UDO WORM media can be identified by its Blue cartridge case.
Pieces of UDO media must have a unique barcode of the approved format centred on the spine of the disk, ensuring the ‘A’ side of media and barcode label are oriented as shown below.

Adding Backup UDO media via the mailslotTo function correctly and enable disaster recovery, at least two backup UDO media must always be used in the Appliance.
Backup UDO media must always be added, via the mailslot, prior to adding ANY data media to the system.
To add backup UDO media:
1. Press any key to display the top-level menu.
2. Press sel to display the first sub-menu ( ):
3. Press next to display .
4. Press sel.
5. Insert the backup UDO media, ‘A’ side facing up, into the Mailslot.AA238, AA438 and AA638 models only: Press the eject button, shown below. The library will then take the media and close the mailslot.
6. The cartridge will be checked for valid UDO format and barcode (if there is a problem, see page 33).If all is well, a message is be displayed.
7. Repeat the above steps until you have added all required backup UDO media.
Note: At least one piece of backup UDO media MUST be added to the system. Plasmon recommend the use of two pieces of backup UDO media.

• You’ll see one of the following error messages:
-
-
-
• The media in question will be ejected.
You need to remove the cartridge and optionally insert another.
Other errorsOther error messages you may encounter are:
