From the Executive Director I am excited to serve as Executive Director of Aiken Center for the Arts as we look forward to the upcoming year, and our entire staff, teachers, and artists join me in saying welcome! We are looking ahead to amazing arts programming and exhibitions this next year. This newsletter is full of opportunities to learn a new art form or grow within your favorite medium. Exhibiting in our main gallery in September, “Convergence: Three Women, Three Voices” will include a collection of abstract works from artists Lucy Weigle, Penny Beesley, and Betty Brand Perry, as well as “Small Expressions”, an annual exhibi-

tion from the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. Opening October 29th, Columbia artists Heather LaHaise and Jan Swanson will bring their perspectives to an exhibition, “The Dog & Pony Show” which will also bring awareness and raise funds for our local no kill animal shelters. As Heather writes in her bio, “…dogs give me a voice and I hope to give them one as well.” We will celebrate the Beaux Arts Masquerade on Friday October 18th, 2019 and the Aiken Antique Show January 31 – February 2, 2020. The steps we take over these next twelve months will help us to evolve and focus on better serving our community and surrounding areas. Let’s join together as we begin another year and I look forward to seeing you during this year’s exhibitions, receptions, events; and creating in our classes and workshops! Caroline Gwinn

Beaux Arts Masquerade On Friday October 18th the Aiken Center for the Arts will host the return of Beaux Arts Masquerade. We’d like to thank Sharon Hagan for chairing this event as its success will bring much needed financial support to the Arts Center. This event will be one of only two annual fundraising events for the Aiken Center for the Arts and we believe it will be the social and philanthropic highlight of Aiken’s Fall season.Beaux Arts Masquerade is designed to be a light-hearted costume optional celebration where music and dancing will be enjoyed along with delicious food and adult beverages. In addition to a Live Auction of “Hap-penings,” including special dinner gatherings, event packages, and destination giveaways, our guests can opt to join in our costume contest. We invite everyone in Aiken to get creative, get involved, and come be a part of Beaux Arts Masquerade… the best party in town!As a nonprofit, the Aiken Center for the Arts is commit-ted to fulfilling our mission in ways that will develop a greater sense of community and well-being through art ----- all helping make Aiken an interesting and delightful place to live.

Monday, September 16 at 10:00amLecture: Notre Dame de Paris: Forged by FireDr. Jeremy Culler will present a lecture entitled Notre Dame de Paris: Forged by Fire. The fire that happened at Notre Dame this past year brought to the forefront the significance of this historic structure and all it has contributed to the cultural landscape of the world. This fall as Aiken Community Theatre presents the musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aiken Center for the Arts exhibits local works on the theme of Notre Dame. USCA Art History professor, Dr. Culler, will address the role of fire in the construction of the cathedral and the talk will cover the historical significance of Notre Dame de Paris as an ultimate expression of Gothic architecture. Join us as we give pause to this singular theme.

PROCESS PAINTING

This is the invitation to gather for the great adventure of painting. When you freely ex-press your unique inner world it opens you to surprise, insight, and even revelation. With the right support, creative blocks and self criticism can be dissolved. Come with your curiosity, openness, and courage to discover the joy and delight of painting. About Jan: In the mid 70’s Jan Haller began to feel a great longing to paint. There was a sense of wanting to dive into it. And, despite not knowing the rules, she began to dabble a bit. But she really fell in love with painting in 1978 after a profound weekend at her first free expression work-shop at The Painting Experience in San Francisco with Michele Cassou. The fullness of what Jan was feeling inside had permis-sion to move and express itself. There was a sense of getting to know herself for the first time. The great accepting arms of creativity cradled her and she began to understand the previously unnamed intuition she had that she could very simply paint from within. Jan had found what she was looking for. Jan is passionate about supporting creativity in others and has facilitated painting with adults and children for many years while dispelling the myths around self criticism and lack of talent. The embodied freedom to paint in-forms other places, relationships and dynam-ics in life. Jan knows we hold a deep creative intelligence that brings everything we need.Painting takes us through a mysterious door into new worlds. Jan Haller lives, paints and creates in Taos, New Mexico. No previous art experience is required.Thurs-Tues, Nov 8-12 . . . . . . . . . . . . $650*9:30am-4:30pm 14714*Register by Sept 30 for $600.
