Drawings, Christies London:
The newly launched dedicated sale of Old Master and Early
British Drawings achieved excellent results with 95% sold by
value,reflecting both a robust market and the enduring popularity
of this collecting field with private collectors, museums and art
dealers. Manynew auction records were set for both categories and
the sale attracted international participation and saw fierce
bidding in the busy GreatRoom. British Drawings performed very
well, including the collection of early figure drawingstotaling
212,950and the collectionof Greek subjectstotaling 307,450. The top
lot by Francisco Jose de Goya, Hutiles Trabajos, equaled the
previous auction recordin sterling for a drawing by the artist.
Overall, it was a great day for works on paper, asMichelangelos
Male nude seen from behindsold for 3,177,250 in the Old Master
Evening Sale, bringing the combined total for works on paper sold
at Christies King Street tonearly 9.5million. We look forward to
