1.1.2 GENERAL WARNINGS
1.1.3 USER REQUIREMENTS
To use this SCBA you must know:
1) That the part numbers on the respirator componentsmatch the component numbers on the NIOSH ApprovalLabel. If you have any doubts, prior to using the respi-rator consult an Industrial Hygienist, or North SafetyProducts Customer Service in the United States at 1-800-430-4110.
2) That this SCBA fits you properly. (See Warning #2 inSection 1.1.2 General Warnings and Section 1.1.5 FitTesting.)
3) That you do not have any physical limitation or illnesswhich would preclude you from using this respirator, orwhich would be aggravated by an increase in breathingresistance. (Ask your Safety Director or physician.)There are both psychological and physiological limita-tions for SCBA users which should be considered. Referto National Fire Protection Association Standard 1582Medical Requirements for Fire Fighters for information. The user should obtain a medical examination if any ofthe following conditions exist or may exist:
1. Failure to follow Norths instructions and warnings,as well as the Cautions and Limitations containedwithin the NIOSH Approval Label, will subject theuser to the risk of serious injury, illness or deathexposure to hazardous materials.
2. Do not use any 800 Series SCBA when condi-tions prevent a good facepiece-to-face seal. Exam-ples of such conditions are:
i. the growth of beards, bangs, or sideburnswhich will pass between the facepiece sealingarea and the wearers face;
ii. the use of spectacles, caps, face or head coverings containing temples, straps or othermaterial which will pass between the facepiecesealing area and the wearers face;
iii. the use of other devices which interfere withthe SCBA; and
iv. missing teeth or dentures, facial deformities ordeep scars.
3. Do not use any 800 Series SCBA under any ofthe following conditions:
Without fully charged air cylinder(s). While performing or observing abrasive blasting
(sandblasting) operations. In temperatures below -25F (-30C). While working alone, except for escape.
When the atmospheric pressure is below 450mm
(17.7 in.) mercury.4. The 800 Series SCBA DOES NOT provide protec-
tion to exposed areas of the body. Some airbornecontaminants are extremely irritating to the skin [e.g. ammonia (NH4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl)]while others are capable of being absorbed throughthe skin and into the bloodstream with serious, pos-sibly fatal, results. Hydrogen cyanide and many ofthe organic phosphate pesticides, such as thiophos-phate insecticide and tetraethyl pyrophosphate(TEPP), will penetrate the unbroken skin. The SCBAwill not afford complete protection against these con-taminants. If such materials are encountered or sus-pected, an effective full-body encapsulation suit ofimpermeable material must be worn with the SCBA,as outlined in NFPA Publication No. 49 HazardousChemical Data.
5. Immediately leave the contaminated area if:
i. breathing becomes difficult;
ii. dizziness or other distress occurs;
iii. you smell, taste or sense irritation from thecontaminants;
iv. the respirator becomes damaged; or
v. the alarm whistle activates.
6. Do not alter or modify this device in any way. Anyalterations or modifications, including painting, affix-ing labels or using unapproved replacement partscan reduce protection and expose the user to therisk of illness, injury or death.
WARNINGS
Before reading the entire manual, familiarize yourself withthe model numbers of your unit and its components. Thisis essential because some of your units replacementparts are dependent on the model number.

1.1.4 TRAINING PROGRAM
These brief written instructions cannot substitute for a formalRespirator Training Program. Such training should include an opportunity for you to handle the respirator, learn how to inspect it, have it properly fitted, test its facepiece-to-faceseal, wear it in normal air for a long familiarity period, andfinally, to wear it in a test atmosphere. The Training Programshould be based on ANSI Z88.2-1992, and should familiar-ize you with OSHA Regulation 29CFR Section 1910.134 and other regulations promulgated by various regulatory authorities.
Information on proper training techniques is available fromState & University Fire Training Schools, the Federal FireAcademy, and agencies such as the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, the International Association of Fire Fighters, and the National Fire Protection Associa-tion (ANSI/NFPA 1404, Fire Department Self-ContainedBreathing Apparatus Program).
1.1.5 FIT TESTING
An SCBA should not be assigned to a person unless the per-son is given a quantitative respirator fit test and the results of the test indicate that the respirator facepiece fits properly.
The facepiece is available in two sizes, medium/large andsmall. Most faces can be fit with the medium/large, howeverpersons with a small face may get a better fit with the small-er size.
Fit tests should be conducted at least annually, or more fre-quently if there are factors such as weight change or dentalsurgery which may affect the fit of the respirator.
A fit test adapter is available for conducting quantitative fittests. (See Accessories.)
Instructions for carrying out quantitative respirator fit testsare given in publications such as ANSI Z88.2-1992, and res-pirator manuals published by government agencies such asNIOSH, ERDA, and NRC.
1.1.6 USER SEAL CHECKS (Facepiece to FaceSeal Checks)
Each time that the respirator is put on, and before each entryinto a contaminated atmosphere, as well as periodically whilewearing the respirator in the contaminated area, the respi-rator wearer should check the effectiveness of the seal of the facepiece to the wearers face by carrying out a positivepressure user seal check. Instructions for carrying out userseal checks on this respirator are given in Section 3 of thismanual.
1.2 SERVICE DURATION
The useful service duration of a SCBA will depend on suchfactors as:
a. The degree of physical activity of the user; hardwork will use up the air supply faster than light work.
b. The physical condition of the user; some usersbreathe harder than others.
c. The degree to which the users breathing is affectedby excitement, fear or other emotional factors.
d. The degree of training or experience which the userhas had with this or similar equipment.
e. Whether or not the cylinder is fully charged at thestart of the work period.
f. The amount of Carbon Dioxide in the facepiece;concentrations greater than atmospheric levels of0.04% will increase the respiratory rate of the user, consuming more air.
You should not enter any potentially contaminatedatmosphere unless you have confirmed all of these factors.
WARNING
The useful service duration of your SCBA will frequent-ly be less than the rated service duration depending onany of the factors listed below. In any event, when therespirators low air warning whistle sounds it means the air cylinder is running out of air and you must PRO-CEED IMMEDIATELY TO A SAFE AREA. Failure toproceed to a safe area when the alarm sounds willresult in the risk of exhausting the supply of breathableair while in the hazardous area and exposing the userto illness, injury, or death.
WARNING
6ENGLISH
g. Atmospheric pressure at different elevations; in apressurized tunnel or vessel at 2 atmospheres (15PSI gauge) the useful service duration will be halfthe duration as when used at 1 atmosphere (sealevel); and at 3 atmospheres the useful serviceduration will be 1/3 the duration at sea level.
h. A loose or improperly fitting facepiece will use moreair to maintain positive pressure.
i. The condition of the apparatus. Poor maintenancecan result in air leaks.
j. Emergency use of the buddy breathing fitting. Avail-able air is used twice as fast.
k. The use of the purge button which releases sub-stantial amounts of air.
l. The temperature. The service duration will decreaseat low temperatures.
1.3 DESCRIPTION
Major components of the North 800 Series are shown inFigure 1 and include: the pressurized air cylinder with valve,a full facepiece with speech diaphragm and nose cup, a first-breath demand valve, a backplate with integral harness andstraps, a high pressure reducer/regulator and hoses, and apressure gauge and warning whistle. A special buddy breath-ing/test fitting is also provided.
OPERATING PRINCIPLE (See Figure 1.3A)Compressed breathing air is stored in the air cylinder. Whenthe cylinder valve is opened the pressurized air is reduced at the reducer/regulator. The air then travels via the low pres-sure air supply hose to the demand valve attached to thefacepiece. This valve then provides a flow of air to the userupon inhalation. The pressure maintained inside the face-piece is greater than the atmospheric pressure outside the facepiece. The user exhales directly to the atmospherethrough the exhalation valve/speaking diaphragm located in the facepiece. The breathing cycles are repeated until theuser has drawn down his air supply to approximately 25% ofthe original quantity. At this time the low air warning whistlesounds. The user then must immediately leave the haz-ardous environment.
COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS
The reducer/regulator (See Figure 1.3B) incorporates adual spring loaded pressure balancing piston. High pressurecylinder air flows through a sized orifice in the piston stem. The spring tension prevents the piston from moving until thedesired back pressure is achieved. The reducer/regulator is of a fail-open design. The flow of air through the devicecannot be stopped by an internal part malfunction.

7ENGLISH
The Demand Valve (See Figures 1.3C, 1.3D, and 1.3E) supplies respirable air to the facepiece on demand as theuser inhales, while at the same time maintaining a positivepressure inside the facepiece relative to outside the face-piece. This positive pressure prevents the contaminatedatmosphere from entering the facepiece through the face-piece-to-face seal. Air is reduced in pressure as it enters intothe demand valve main chamber and proceeds through tothe facepiece connected to it. When the back pressure fromthe facepiece reaches a threshold value of about 1" H2O column (.036 PSI), the diaphragm moves the attached con-trol lever which closes the valve. As the user inhales, theback pressure from the facepiece drops below the threshold, the valve reopens to supply more air, the valve closes again, and remains closed as the user exhales. When the userinhales again, the cycle repeats. The demand valve is of afail open design such that the flow of air into the facepiececan not be stopped due to diaphragm, valve seat or mechan-ical linkage malfunction. The demand valve design does notdepend on balance springs and, therefore, the spring-lessdesign minimizes the possibility of malfunction. The North 800 Series demand valve incorporates a don-
ning feature and is referred to as a first breath demandvalve. This means that the user can set the demand valve toprevent air from entering the facepiece while putting on theSCBA even though the cylinder valve is open. Once thefacepiece is on, the demand valve will automatically switchon due to the act of inhalation by the wearer. The demandvalve is also equipped with a purge button which can be acti-vated by the wearer at any time, if he/she needs a supple-mental flow of air. This overrides the normal function of thedemand valve and provides a continuous flow of air while thebutton is depressed as long as there is air in the cylinder.
In operation, clean dry air is supplied to the mask throughthe demand valve, entering the outer facepiece cavity andpassing over the lens to reduce fogging. An integral oral/nasal cup, fitted with two inhalation valves, minimizes Car-bon Dioxide retention in the facepiece by reducing the deadair space. The oral/nasal cup serves to reduce the foggingof the facepiece lens. The oral/nasal cup also channels theusers voice to the speaking diaphragm.
The speaking diaphragm/exhalation valve assembly is adevice which performs two functions. It transmits the usersvoice and provides an outlet for exhaled air.
FIGURE 1.3DFlow Diagram Demand Valve (Open)
FIGURE 1.3CFlow Diagram Demand Valve (Closed)
The purge button is not a bypass valve. It is only a sup-plemental flow device. No bypass is needed because ofthe fail open design.
NOTE
The amount of air available for subsequent use is re-duced rapidly when the purge button is used. Thereforeit should only be used when absolutely necessary.

8ENGLISH
The Buddy Breathing Fitting enables one additional personto breathe from one unit under emergency conditions. Cur-rently NIOSH does not test or approve buddy breathingdevices as part of its 42 CFR part 84 Certification Procedure.See the section titled Buddy Breathing in the Emergency Usesection of this manual for operating procedures and warnings.
2 PRE-USE INSTRUCTIONS
2.1 FACEPIECE
Remove the facepiece assembly from its container and visu-ally check the facepiece to make sure that the sealing flangeis not distorted, that all components including the exhalationvalve flap are in place, in good condition and secure.
2.2 CORRECTIVE LENSES
Contact lenses may be worn when using this respirator, provided the user is accustomed to wearing contact lenses.Spectacles may not be worn when using this respirator. How-ever, spectacle kits which hold individual corrective lenses are available. (See Accessories.)
2.3 DEMAND VALVE
Make sure the demand valve is securely fastened to thefacepiece. The demand valve-to-facepiece connection con-sists of a simple Push & Turn mechanism.
To assemble the demand valve to the facepiece:
1. Insert the demand valve into the facepiece inlet port withthe orientation lugs properly aligned.
2. Rotate the demand valve counterclockwise until the inletlocking mechanism is engaged. This will automaticallysecure the demand valve. (See Figure 2.3A.)
To remove the demand valve from the facepiece:
1. Slide the inlet lock lever arm towards the facepiece lensand rotate the demand valve clockwise until it stops.
2. Pull the demand valve out of the inlet housing. (See Fig-ure 2.3B.)
FIGURE 2.3ADemand Valve Mechanism
FIGURE 2.3BRemoving the Demand Valve from the Facepiece
To avoid compromising the facepiece-to-face seal, useonly North spectacle kits.
WARNINGA demand valve holder located on the waist belt can beused to hold the demand valve when not in use. This isconvenient when the user exits to a clean air area anddoes not need to remove the facepiece. Simply removethe demand valve from the facepiece, activate the don-ning feature or shut off the cylinder by rotating the valveclockwise (frontward), and press the demand valve ontothe holder. (See Figure 2.3C and 2.3D.)
NOTE
FIGURE 2.3CDemand Valve Holder
Apply an anti-fog compound to the inside of the lens ifthe respirator will be used at temperatures below 32F(0C). This will reduce fogging on the inside of the face-piece lens so the user can continue to see through it.

2.4 BACKPLATE, HARNESS, REDUCER, ALARMASSEMBLY
Visually inspect the assembly to make sure all componentsare in place, in good condition and secure. Check to insurethat all straps are fully extended, buckles are not connectedand hoses not tangled. Check to see that the cylinder gaugeregisters full (see figure 2.4A). If not, replace the cylinderwith a full air cylinder.
2.5 AIRLINE / PASSTHROUGH FITTING OPTION
The North 80060 Airline Accessory, when assembled to aNorth 800 Series SCBA, with a North Quick-connect cou-pling, an optional pass-through fitting for Level A encapsu-lated suits, and air supply hose allows that SCBA to becomea Type C Supplied-air respirator. Please refer to the airlineaccessory or pass-through instruction manual for properassembly.
3 TO PUT ON AND USE THIS SCBA
The following should be performed in a non-contaminated air area.
1. Stand facing the unit and make sure the air cylindervalve is at the top. Lean forward and use both hands to grasp the edges of the back-plate and cylinderbetween the waist harness and the shoulder harness.(See Figure 3A.)
2. Bending over, swing the unit straight up and over thehead keeping elbows close to body. Rest unit on yourback while still bent over and allow shoulder harnessstraps to slide along arms and into place on the shoul-ders. (See Figure 3B.) Be sure the elbows are throughthe shoulder harness and its side strap loops. Check to ensure straps are not twisted. (See Figure 3C.)

3. Pull down shoulder adjusting straps while slowly rising to an erect standing position. Position cylinder and back-plate to your comfort. (See Figure 3D.)
4. a. Grasp the waist belt buckles, extend the left handmale buckle to fit waist. (See Figure 3E.)
b. Snap the two waist belt buckles together. Pull the waistbelt from the left until there is a snug fit. (See Figure 3F.)
5. Connect and adjust the chest strap. (See Figure 3G.)
6. After all the straps are adjusted, tuck in all the strapends wherever practical. (See Figure 3H.)
Do not lay chest strap over the air supply line or the chestmounted pressure gauge. The pressure gauge mustremain free so the cylinder pressure can be read easily. If the air supply line is constrained, attaching the face-piece becomes difficult.
NOTE
Tuck the ends of the straps in to avoid entanglement inmachinery or other items while wearing the SCBA.

15. Tighten top headstrap. (See Figure 3S.)
16. If the air is not flowing, set the mask for positive pressure by inhaling or pushing the purge button. (See Figure 3T and 3U.)
17. Check the chest mounted pressure gauge. It should indi-cate full cylinder pressure. If the gauge does not indicatefull, remove the unit and obtain a full cylinder. (See Figure 3V.)
18. Test for positive pressure in the facepiece by gentlybreaking the seal at your cheek. This can be accom-plished by gently lifting a portion of the facepiece sealing surface slightly off the face. Airflow should beheard and felt. If you feel it, release the flange to allowthe facepiece to reseal. If you dont hear the air flow, you do not have positive pressure. You must then return the facepiece and demand valve assembly to the service area and replace it with a new unit. (See Figure 3W.)
19. Test the facepiece seal by holding your breath and listening for airflow through the demand valve control. There should be no sound and no outward leakagethrough the exhalation valve or around the facepiece. If the wearer detects any leakage, the headstrap shouldbe readjusted until a no-leakage condition is achieved. If leakage is still present, the facepiece should beremoved and the SCBA returned to the service area.

20. Test the purge button. Hold your breath as in 19 (pre-vious page) and briefly push the purge button (located inthe center of the cover of the demand valve). Air shouldflow into the facepiece. If it does, release button andbreathe normally. If air does not flow into the facepiece, remove the demand valve and return it to the servicearea. (See Figure 3X.)
21. After you are assured that the unit is functioning proper-ly, close the air cylinder valve. Inhale/exhale very slowly, watch the air pressure gauge and listen for the warningwhistle. The warning whistle should sound when the dial on the pressure gauge drops to the 1/4 mark. (See Figure 3Y.)
22. Reopen the cylinder valve. You are now ready to use the800 Series SCBA.

WARNING
You must have air in your cylinder to sustain life. Besure to check the air pressure gauge during use forremaining air supply to allow sufficient time for exit from a contaminated area.Immediately leave the contaminated area if:
i. breathing becomes difficult.ii. dizziness or other distress occurs.iii. you sense irritation, smell or taste contami-
nants.
iv. the SCBA becomes damaged.v. the alarm whistle activates.
Failure to proceed to a safe area when the alarmsounds will result in the risk of exhausting breathableair while in the contaminated area, exposing the user to illness, injury, or death.
WARNING
Before re-entering the contaminated area, the usermust ensure the demand valve is secured properly tothe facepiece and perform steps 16-22 described inthis section. Practice securing the demand valve prop-erly while wearing the facepiece is recommendedbefore attempting this activity.
WARNING

4 TO TAKE OFF THE SCBA
1. Exit to a clean air area.
2. Shut off the air cylinder by rotating air cylinder valveclockwise (frontward). (See Figure 4A.)
3. Remove the facepiece by flicking the headstrap quick-release tabs forward. Lift mask from under your chin and upward and out. Return headstraps to full out-ward position. (See Figure 4B.)
4. Release the chest strap and then the waist strap bucklesby first pinching the release mechanisms on the top andbottom of buckles and then pulling them apart. (See Figure 4C.)
5. Loosen the shoulder straps by lifting up on the shoul-der strap buckles. Remove unit in a fashion similar to removing a jacket. Be careful not to drop the unit.(See Figure 4D.)
6. Return the used unit to the service area for TurnaroundMaintenance.
5 EMERGENCY OPERATION
5.1 UNIT MALFUNCTIONS
ENGLISHFIGURE 4A
Closing Air Cylinder Valve
Should the SCBA unit malfunction, immediately exit toa safe area. Failure to proceed to a safe area when thealarm sounds or when a malfunction occurs will resultin the risk of exhausting breathable air while in the con-taminated area, exposing the user to illness, injury, ordeath.
WARNING
FIGURE 4BRemoving Facepiece
FIGURE 4CReleasing Strap Buckles
FIGURE 4DReleasing Shoulder Straps
16
Since all systems in the North SCBA are fail-safe, any signif-icant loss or escape of air due to an equipment malfunctionor excess air entering the facepiece can be reduced to aminimum by manually adjusting (closing) the cylinder valve. This restricts and reduces the flow of air into and through the system, while at the same time providing sufficient flowrequired for respiration while exiting.
5.2 BUDDY BREATHING
The unique design of this apparatus enables two people, when each are equipped with an 800 Series facepiece anddemand valve assembly, to breathe from one unit. CurrentlyNIOSH does not test or approve Buddy Breathing devices as part of its certification procedure. NIOSH approval is void while the buddy breathing device is being used.
The Buddy Breathing fitting is located near the cylinder valveextending from the reducer/regulator to the wearers left side.(See Figure 5.2A.)
A protective cap is attached to minimize dust in the fittingand must be removed prior to use. To use, the person inneed must hold his/her breath, disconnect their demandvalve at the quick connect coupler in the air supply line andplug the demand valve connector into the Buddy Breathingfitting on the host 800 Series SCBA. (See Figure 5.2B.)
After making the connection, lock the fitting by turning thesleeve in a clockwise direction until tight. (See Figure 5.2C.)
Egress from the hazardous area must begin immediately.
ENGLISH
FIGURE 5.2ABuddy Breathing Fitting
FIGURE 5.2BEmergency Hook-up to Buddy Breathing Fitting
When the Buddy Breathing fitting is used, air is con-sumed at a much higher rate, both before and after the warning whistle sounds, and the useful serviceduration becomes very short, very quickly. Unless bothusers exit quickly, both will be deprived of needed air.
The successful use of a Buddy Breathing fittingrequires a comprehensive program of field training with the actual equipment to be used. Such trainingshould be considered advanced training, because thepractice of Buddy Breathing is much too dangerousfor the untrained firefighter or plant worker. Smokedivers classes, sponsored by state fire schools, shouldbe referred to when considering this training. The prac-tice of Buddy Breathing without training exposes bothparticipants to the risk of illness, injury, or death.

The 800 Series SCBA is not intended for use underwater. However, should a user fall into water, the unit will continueto function. The user will note some air bubble leakage; thisis due to the difference in head pressure between the exha-lation valve and demand valve. Egress from the water shouldbe effected as soon as possible. Return any unit used under-water to the shop for Periodic Maintenance.
6 TURNAROUND MAINTENANCE
After each use, the SCBA should be examined by trainedpersonnel.
6.1 INSPECTION
Visually inspect all components for damage or wear, espe-cially rubber parts. Replace parts where needed.
If needed, clean and sanitize the facepiece assembly. (SeeSection: Periodic Maintenance.)
6.2 REMOVE, INSPECT AND REFILL AIR CYLINDER
1. Close cylinder valve.
2. Lift up cylinder strap toggle latch. (See Figure 6.2A.)
3. Loosen regulator handwheel until the disconnect ismade. Grasp cylinder by valve and at base of cylinderand slide up and out of hoop strap. (See Figure 6.2B.)
4. Inspect reducer/regulator high pressure nipple O-Ringfor wear and abuse; replace if necessary. (See Figure6.2C.)
5. Visually inspect cylinder for dents, gouges, or any indi-cations that the cylinder has been exposed to flame orhigh heat such as the presence of charred paint, orcharred decals, melted gauge lens, or any other evi-dence of fire damage. Check valve connection threadsfor wear, burrs or other signs of abuse which couldcause leaks.
ENGLISH
Make certain that the cylinder valve is closed. If thecylinder is pressurized, do not open the valve without a pressure reducer valve attached. Escaping air cancause serious injury to persons in its path.Major Components such as cylinders, hoses, facepieceand fittings which show evidence of damage must beremoved from service. Damaged components candevelop leaks and are unreliable.
Familiarize yourself with the model numbers of yourunit and its components. This is essential becausesome of your units replacement parts are dependenton model number. Usage of incorrect components mayresult in the unit becoming non-compliant with NIOSHrequirements.

Do not fill a cylinder if the its hydrostatic test date is notwithin the time specified (see previous notes).Do not fill with oxygen or other gases. Filling with otherthan Grade D breathing air, having a maximum dewpoint of -65F (-54C), will result in serious injury ordeath to the user. Air with a dew point higher than -65F (-54C) can freeze during use, blocking the airsupply.
Do not exceed the cylinders rated pressure during fill-ing, and do not alter the burst. Failure to observe theseprohibitions can cause a cylinder to explode during fill-ing, exposing the filling operator and bystanders to therisk of serious injury or death.

LOW PRESSUREAIR SUPPLYLINE
SHIELDEDHIGHPRESSURELINE
Inspect the low pressure facepiece air supply line and itsconnectors for abuse. (See Figure 6.2J.) Inspect harness, backplate, and straps for fraying, cutting, or other damage.Replace as required.
9. Place the full cylinder into open hoop strap. Easy align-ment is accomplished by standing the cylinder on its endon a stable flat surface. Then line up the cylinder valveconnection with the male nipple on the reducer/ regula-tor, mate threads and hand tighten with the reducer/regulator handwheel as shown. (See Figure 6.2K.)
10. Fasten the cylinder strap toggle latch to secure cylinder.
7 STORAGE
If provided with a carrying case, the North 800 SeriesSCBA should be stored in its case. If stored on a vehicle wall bracket, a cover should be employed which will protectthe SCBA from the adverse effects of the elements.
When the SCBA unit is stored without the carrying case, it isrecommended to use the travel strap (included with all NFPAcompliant models) to secure the gauge/whistle assembly tothe backplate or the neck of the cylinder.
7.1 RUBBER PARTS
The North 800 Series SCBA contains rubber parts such as the facepiece, hoses, diaphragms, and valve flaps whichneed to be protected during storage. Rubber componentsmay be stored for five years without significant change intheir properties, provided that certain precautions areobserved. Many factors affect the storage life of rubber. The main ones are as follows:
1. DeformationThe facepiece should be stored so that no stress isplaced upon the sealing flange that would cause deformation during storage.
2. TemperatureMinimize exposure of the SCBA to severe temperatures, hot or cold. Use the temperature guidelines listed on theNIOSH approval label located on the backplate of theunit or in the back of this manual.
3. Light Rubber components should be protected from light, par-ticularly direct sunlight and strong artificial light. The unitshould be covered with an opaque cover during storage.
4. OzoneThe storage space should be moderately ventilated, butarticles should be protected from circulating air by suit-ably wrapping or storing in containers. Ozone is particu-larly harmful, and storage rooms should not contain anyelectrical equipment capable of generating ozone suchas mercury vapor lamps, large electric motors or high-voltage equipment.
5. HumidityA slightly humid atmosphere is preferred for storage; a maximum relative humidity of 65% is recommended.Very moist conditions should be avoided, and conden-sation should not be allowed to occur on the unit.
6. Contact With Other MaterialsThe rubber should not be allowed any contact with: Sol-vents, oils, greases, chemical or acid vapors; brass, copper or iron. Wrapping materials containing harmfulsubstances, for example copper naphthenate or cre-osote, should not be used.

7.2 FACEPIECE ASSEMBLY
When not in the SCBA storage case, the facepiece assemblyshould be kept in a loose-fitting bag to protect the lens fromscratching and to keep the facepiece clean.
7.3 DEMAND VALVE & QUICK-CONNECT FITTINGS
1. The demand valve is best stored on the demand valveholder located on the backplate in the position shown.(See Figure 7.3A.) This allows the air supply line andswivel joint to be stored with minimal stress and pre-vents dirt from entering the demand valve.
2. When the demand valve is stored on the holder, connectthe quick-connect fitting on the demand valve to the lowpressure supply line to prevent dirt and dust from enter-ing the fitting.
3. Maintain the dust cover on the buddy breathing couplerwhen not in use.
8 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
As needed, remove, inspect and clean facepiece anddemand valve assembly.
8.1 CLEANING AND SANITIZING
1. Remove facepiece and demand valve assembly fromunit by unscrewing the quick-connect coupling on the air supply hose and sliding the knurled collar towardsthe demand valve. (See Figure 8.1A.)
2. Grasp the facepiece and hold down the inlet lever.Grasp the demand valve and rotate it clockwise until itstops. Pull the demand valve out of the inlet housing.(See Figures 8.1B & 8.1C.)
ENGLISH
FIGURE 7.3AStoring The Demand Valve
All O-rings and gaskets must be replaced at least onceeach year.
NOTE
If the air is turned on without the demand valve connectedto the demand valve supply line, air will escape from thedemand valve supply line coupling. The quick-connectbuddy breathing/test coupling is different from the demandvalve supply line coupling. It has an integral check valveto prevent leaks.

9. Remove the inlet housing from the lens by unscrewingthe nut on the inside of the facepiece. Inspect the gasketand replace if necessary. (See Figure 8.1L.) Remove the lever by unscrewing it from the stop bar. Inspect thespring for corrosion or deformation. Replace if necessary.(See Figure 8.1M.)
10. Prepare a solution of 2 oz. of cleaner/sanitizer (NorthCatalog Number 80992) or equal in a gallon of warmwater. (110F-125F.)
11. Wash facepiece components in clean solution.
12. Rinse facepiece components completely in clean warmwater, then air dry in clean area.
13. Reassemble the facepiece. Make sure that all valves and gaskets are in place.
14. An anti-fog coating may be applied to the lens insideand outside of the facepiece only after the lens area has dried (North P/N 80945 or equal). This is manda-tory when the SCBA will be used in temperatures below 32F.
15. Wash, drain and thoroughly dry the demand valve (asfacepiece above). At all times hold its air supply hosehigher than its body, to limit the entry of water into theair supply hose. (See Figure 8.1N.) Connect the demandvalve to an SCBA set and pass a burst of clean dry airthrough it (it may be useful to use the air remaining in a used cylinder). This will remove any water that mighthave remained during final air drying.

9 PERIODIC INSPECTION
In addition to routine inspections and turnaround mainte-nance, the Periodic Inspection test procedures should beconducted monthly on units in regular use and every six (6)months on units in reserve.
The purpose of this test sequence is to ensure that key ele-ments of your 800 Series SCBA are working to the speci-fications of North Safety Products and are within the safeparameters of the NIOSH certification.
It is suggested that a special clean work area be designatedfor SCBA service and repair. Avoid using on breathing equip-ment grease laden tools used for vehicle service. Allow sepa-rate storage areas for the out-of-service units. Provide aclean bench work surface free of sharp metal corners. (Thisis to protect the easy-to-scratch facepiece lens.) Plan properprocedures for handling air cylinders (allow safe storagespace; cylinders should not be free to roll or drop from benchtops).
Personnel performing periodic maintenance and service onSCBA are required to read and understand this operationsmanual.
Familiarize yourself with the model numbers of your unit andits components. This is essential because some of your unitsreplacement parts are dependent on model number. Use ofincorrect components may result in the unit becoming non-compliant with NIOSH requirements.
EQUIPMENT
1. North 800 Series SCBA Tool and Test Kit, North P/N80997 Tool Kit contains miscellaneous hand tools andone (1) 0-200 PSI (31/2" dial) low pressure (back pres-sure) test gauge and hose with quick-connect fitting.
2. Silicone lube, Parker Super-O-Lube, or equivalent.
3. A quick air quality analysis may be conducted usingNIOSH approved gas detector tubes. (Note: The accu-racy of this analysis should be expected to be in the 25% range.) A more accurate system would employdirect meter reading instrumentation that can be calibra-ted against known gas concentrations prior to use. Analternate would be to employ an outside laboratory toevaluate the air being produced by the supplying aircompressor. This test should be conducted monthly.
4. Leak Detection SolutionNorth Safety P/N 80991 Leak Detection solution is usedto check for leaks from hoses, seals and fittings.
5. Valving ToolNorth Safety P/N 80943 Valve Tool is used to removeand attach a cylinder valve to a cylinder.
TEST PROCEDURES
1. Facepiece
a. Inspect and clean facepiece as previouslydescribed in Section 8 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE.Repair or replace facepiece parts as required seeReplacement Parts Lists.
b. Don the facepiece as described in Section 3 TO PUT ON AND USE THIS SCBA. The demand valveshould not be attached to the facepiece.
c. Perform a negative pressure user seal check bycovering the open inlet housing and inhaling. Thefacepiece is not leaking if it collapses. If the face-piece does not collapse, it is leaking and should betaken out of service and repaired. (See Figure 9A.)
ENGLISH
Only parts and test equipment approved for the certi-fied North 800 Series SCBA shall be used in its ser-vice and repairs. Using parts not authorized by NorthSafety Products nullifies the NIOSH certification appli-cable to this breathing apparatus and voids the NorthSafety Products warranty.

5. Reducer/Regulator Using Backpressure Test Gauge
a. Insert the coupling of the test gauge into the BuddyBreathing adapter.
b. Set the demand valve to the donning mode andopen the cylinder valve. Read the backpressure testgauge. (See Figure 9K.) At full tank pressure thisreading should be 72-83 PSI for Non-NFPA modelSCBAs and 85-92 for NFPA model SCBAs. If adeviation is observed, the reducer/regulator shouldbe removed and replaced with a factory authorizedservice center replacement. When replaced, repeattest procedure.
6. Cylinder
If a cylinder is suspected of losing air, then the cylindervalve must be replaced.
ENGLISH
If or when the cylinder valve is removed from the cylinder,a new O-Ring should be used, making sure the O-Ringgland and threads are clean and undamaged. A smallamount of Parker Super-O-Lube should be applied to theO-Ring and threads of the valve prior to revalving. (SeeFigure 9L.) 2216 PSI cylinder valves have a .750 - 16UNF thread and require a maximum of 75 ft. lb. torquewhen re-valving. 4500 PSI cylinder valves have a .875 -14 UNF thread and require a maximum of 75 ft. lb.torque when revalving. A North Safety Products ValvingTool should be used when changing the cylinder valve.(See Figure 9M & 9N.)Whenever an air cylinder has been devalved, the interiorshould be visually inspected for excessive corrosion andfor internal cracks in the metal. Special interior inspectiontechniques are available from Luxfer USA Ltd. a cylindermanufacturer.

7. Recharging cylinders
a. Approximately 1.5 minutes of use time are lost witheach 100 PSI reduction in pressure. The cylindergauge indicates the pressure in the cylinder con-tinuously. The valve need not be turned on.
b. Recharge the cylinder with pure, respirable com-pressed air conforming to the Compressed GasAssociation Specification G-7.1, Grade D, or higherquality, having a maximum dew point of -65F (-54C). Cylinders must never be filled to a pressuregreater than the marked service pressure.
c. After connecting the filler hose, open the cylindervalve fully. A separate metering valve must be usedto control fill rate. Fill the cylinder slowly, at a ratenot exceeding 600 PSI per minute to avoid exces-sively heating the air. After the initial filling allow thecylinder to cool to room temperature, then top offto achieve full service pressure.
8. Authorized shop overhaul
As required, certain critical components, such as thedemand valve and reducer/regulator, may necessitatemaintenance. This maintenance will be performed onlyby an authorized service center using only North SafetyProducts supplied 800 Series SCBA test equipment and approved replacement parts. Warranty repairs and replacements will also be performed through theAuthorized Service Center.
