The body makes itself grow in that it builds itself up with love as each one does their part.” What powerful words! To become more like Jesus, we need to “grow up” in our faith. We are God’s “works in progress.” That’s why your church offers Sunday school classes and small groups and special classes that focus on Bible study and other aspects of the Christian life. It is really important to make your own personal Christian growth a priority. When Wednesday Nights Alive! resume on January 9, your church will offer a new group of classes focused on developing good habits. Begin your new year with the habit of participation in a study group. You’ll meet new church friends and have a great opportunity to build each other up with love. Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World

Never Stop GrowingBy Chere Flanagan

Sometimes, The Bible just says it best. These words are found in the Common English Bible in the 4th chapter of Ephesians.

“God’s goal is for us to become mature adults—to be fully grown, measured by the standard of the fullness of Christ. As a result, we aren’t supposed to be infants any longer who can be tossed and blown around by every wind that comes from teaching with deceitful scheming and the tricks people play to deliberately mislead others. Instead, by speaking the truth with love, let’s grow in every way

into Christ, who is the head. The whole body grows from him, as it is joined and held together by all the supporting ligaments. The body makes itself grow in that it builds itself up with love as each one does their part.”

What powerful words! To become more like Jesus, we need to “grow up” in our faith. We are God’s “works in progress.” That’s why your church offers Sunday school classes and small groups and special classes that focus on Bible study and other aspects of the Christian life. It is really important to make your own personal Christian growth a priority. The Power of HabitTwenty years ago, Bill Hinson, a south Georgia boy who grew up to pastor the then largest church in Methodism (FUMC Houston, Texas) wrote a book called The Power of Holy Habits. A practical guide for keeping membership vows, this book was written for new members and for people who wanted to be genuine disciples of Jesus. Welcome MinistryHave you noticed the Welcome Banners in the main hall and extra efforts from the staff in worship, welcoming those who are new with us? We are trying to become the most Welcoming Congrega-tion in Tuscaloosa! You may not know it but there is a team that drops off mugs and information after a visitor’s first time at our church. There are some folks who call to welcome those visitors who are new and invite them to come back. We send postcards to invite visitors to the Next Step tours and Believe & Belong discussion groups. Greeters and ushers welcome everyone to worship. Church members see a visitor and bring them to the Welcome Center so we can help them get connected with the church. Soon, you will see the idea of “Welcome” become more prominent as we try to reach visi-tors in new ways. Help us as we all play a part in becoming the most Welcoming congregation in Tuscaloosa!

The Gift of Song & the Desire to Share it

God gives us all so many different gifts. Some peo-ple are gifted artists, some are immediately warm and inviting to people they don’t know, some are naturally gifted mathematicians and engineers. our gifts are meant to be diverse so that we can all serve one another better and glorify God in the process.

The Music Ministry of FuMCT has been growing for years now, includ-ing more people into a fellowship that celebrates the love of God through song and ministers not only to our congregation in worship, but also ministers to the hearts and needs of one another. If you have the gift of music and the love of singing, will you consider giving your time and talent to your church in service? The Adult Chancel Choir and Adult Handbell Choir welcomes new members all through-out the year, but the start of a new calendar year is always a good time to get started! Different people of a wide range of ages, walks of life, and abilities all participate in the Music Ministry of FuMCT. What we all share is a love for music and a willingness to serve.

If God gave you the gift of music and song, what better way to use it than in service of His church in worship! If you are interested in join-ing us and willing to give your time and talent in service, please call me or email me.

Faithfully,

James Seay, Director of Music & Worship, [email protected]

Eyeglasses for Honduras By Nola StakemI had no idea why God was sending me to Honduras with a Medical/Dental vIM team. As a veteran of many vIM/construction trips, I had become an excellent brick layer. “Slinging mud” is great fun, a lot of hard work but very rewarding…those walls will be standing long after I’m gone. So, why did God put it on my heart to step out of my com-fort zone and join Annette and Jim Mill’s Honduras Medical/Dental 2012 Mission team? I had come to know John and Dr. Ana lamon (our International Mission partners) during our church’s GIC and was eager to be a part of medical Ministry, but, could not imagine what my role would be. Everyone is busy prepping for their work day…everyone but me. All is loaded, we’re ready to roll when Annette exclaims, “Oh, here are the bags of donated eye glasses”. Ahhh, I take the two plastic bags…I have a job! God always has a plan, thank you lord! We arrive at our first days work site. The team gathers for a prayer then we get to work setting up the medical, dental and pharmacy clinics. I set up a table and chair in a shady spot. Word spreads quickly that eye glasses are being given out and before I know it there is a long line of expectant faces in front of me. All the Spanish translators are help-ing the medical team, I prayed that my elementary Spanish would be adequate. My first “patient” is an elderly lady who tells me that she wants to be able to read her Bible again. None of the glasses have the prescriptions listed, but the perfect pair for her are quickly found. I was humbled by her quiet dignity and grace as she accepted the glass-es. We shared a hug and word of thanksgiving to God. And so it went, down the line. Most of the folks were in their 40’s to 70’s and a dis-maying number of school children. The line of hopeful recipients was so long and the glasses so few—I prayed that God would work a “loaves and fishes” miracle—it was overwhelming to see the need. “Somehow”, the two, small plastic bags of eye wear seemed to be bottomless and supplied a staggering amount of grateful Hondurans with “new” eyes! How blessed to be used by God to help these beauti-ful folks. Eye glasses are beyond the reach for 99% of Hondurans, yet their need to see is as great as ours. Imagine, not being able to see the blackboard, your grandchild’s face clearly, or read your Bible. God has a plan for us all, a purpose, to glorify him by blessing others as he has blessed us. Thank You, Lord for sending me to Honduras, for giving me a passion to help those we serve in Honduras to see their world more clearly and for them to know that it all comes from YOU. Please join us in collecting eye glasses for Honduras. Do you have old eyeglasses that you don’t know what to do with? Please consider donating them to people in Honduras. Drop them off at the receptionist’s desk in the church office.
