Greetings!Whether you are reading this before July 4th or after – my message is the same – stay away from fireworks! Not only do they present a tremendous danger to property and cause great bodily harm…but in San Diego County and some areas of the Imperial Valley…THEY ARE ILLEGAL! No ifs, ands or buts, if you are caught with fireworks in these areas, your fireworks will be confiscated, and you could be fined up to $5,000. If you are an adult that gives fireworks to minors, you may face imprisonment and held responsible for cost recovery.

Injuries and property loss resulting from fireworks have dropped significantly since they were banned in San Diego County. Imperial Valley has not fared as well. During the Fourth of July weekend last year, three separate fireworks-related incidents caused more than $1.5 million in property loss, the displacement of two families, and a firefighter injury. Although the cities of El Centro, Calexico, Brawley and Imperial have already banned all fireworks, there are many areas throughout Imperial Valley that still allow fireworks to be sold and used. With any luck, that is going to change. The Burn Institute and the fire service community are working toward a total ban on fireworks in Imperial County for 2007. Wish us luck!

Here are some facts to consider:Each year, more than 12,000 Americans, half of them children, are treated in emergency rooms for firework-caused injuries.

Approximately 26 percent of the children injured were innocent bystanders.

Fireworks cause more than $35 million in property loss each year.

Sparklers may seem harmless, but they are illegal and can reach temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees.

That last fact should ring true especially for Imperial Valley residents. It wasn’t that long ago when a five-year-old boy’s clothing was ignited by a sparkler. Sadly, that boy died as a result of his injuries.

The bottom line – the risk is not worth the reward. A few fleeting moments of excitement are not worth a lifetime of pain and sorrow. Be smart and leave fireworks to the professionals.

Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

Stay safe!

Best regards,

James A. FlorosExecutive Director/Chief Executive Officer

Sun Safety When going outdoors always wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 25 and follow the directions for re-application. Serious sunburns can occur even when it is cloudy or overcast.

Wear sunglasses that provide UV protection and wear a broad-rimmed hat to protect your head and neck.

Fireworks Fireworks ARE DANGEROUS.

Fireworks ARE ILLEGAL in San Diego County and parts of Imperial Valley.

Sparklers can heat up to 1,800 degrees and ARE ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS.

NEVER play with fireworks. Leave fireworks to the experts and only watch licensed fireworks shows.

Campfires Always use a designated fire pit when building a campfire.

Never leave a campfire unattended.

Always supervise children around campfires.

Before leaving your campsite, make sure the fire is properly extinguished – douse and stir the fire with water.

Barbecues Keep hot grills at least 10 feet from your house.

Keep children and pets away from hot grills.

Dispose of hot coals in proper receptacles – buried coals retain heat for up to 24 hours and may cause a serious burn injury to an unsuspecting passerby who steps in them.

It is estimated that more than 15,000 children are hospitalized with “summer” burn injuries each year.

East County citizens have a new resource for disaster preparedness. Several agencies have joined forces to provide extensive, hands-on

training for residents in the East County to help them become part of the solution. The Fire Departments of Santee, La Mesa, El Cajon and Lemon Grove are offering emergency response training in an effort to give citizens the knowledge needed to aid them in a large scale disaster.

The classes are part of the Community Emergency Response Training program (CERT). CERT is a nation-wide program funded by the Federal Government through grants aimed at teaching members of the community to establish and perform emergency operations in situations where first responders have become overwhelmed such as an earthquake or major terror attack. The participants attend seven weekend classes where they learn the basics of fire suppression, first aid, rescue operations and how to establish and run a command structure. After graduation, the members have the opportunity to attend monthly refreshers and large scale disaster drills. CERT classes are being offered in other areas of San Diego as well. To find classes near you go to www.sdcounty.ca.gov/oes/and follow the community links to the CERT web page.

On Monday, June 5, local fire officials declared the beginning of Fire Season. For those who lived through Firestorm 2003, this is not a day

of celebration but rather a day of preparation. Knowing what to do if a Wildfire strikes is your key to survival! And, living in Southern California, it’s not a matter of if, but when.

The Burn Institute’s 12-page “Living with Wildfire” guide is hailed as one of the region’s best resources on Wildfire preparation. Two versions of the guide were printed – one deals with San Diego County fire zoning and the other with zoning within the city of San

Diego. This page-by-page illustrated guide is available year-round and is FREE of charge. In addition to individual copies, larger quantities of these guides are also available at no charge to homeowner associations, senior communities, libraries and fire stations.

To obtain your FREE “Living With Wildfire Guide”, call (858) 541-2277. Wildfire information is also available online at www.burninstitute.org.

Fire Season Declared On June 5

While June 21 marks the official start of summer, local residents are fortunate to enjoy summer like condi-tions and an active outdoor lifestyle. Summer safety should be a year-round mindset. Below are some safety tips, which can help keep you and your loved ones stay safe from fire and burn injuries.

Poway Residents Enjoy Dinner at the Firehouse

On April 28, nearly 100 Poway residents learned more about the important work of the Burn Institute at a dinner prepared and cooked by

firefighters at the beautiful new Poway Fire Station #3. Before dinner, tours were given of the station and after dinner, guests learned more about the Institute and the recently established Jerry and Carolyn Davee Fund. This special endowment was established to give burn survivors the helping hand they need to overcome their devastating injuries. The immediate goal is to raise $1 million dollars – and we’re almost halfway there!

Burn Institute Emergency Needs Fund Aids Chavez Family

Burn injuries are one of the most painful injuries someone can endure…especially for young children.

In late January 2006, seven year-old Kevin Chavez and his cousin were at home, in the Imperial Valley, enjoying a family bonfire. Unbeknownst to Kevin, his cousin was holding a cup of gasoline. The bonfire was growing hotter and without any warning, the radiant heat suddenly ignited the cup of gas. The cousin was startled, threw the cup, and in a split second, young Kevin’s life changed forever. Kevin’s clothing ignited in flames. Scared and not sure what to do, his first instinct was to run. The next thing Kevin knew, a group of children jumped on top of him and smothered the flames. He lay there with his clothes smoldering. With burns to more than 60% of his small body’s surface, Kevin was in more pain than anyone could imagine. The burns covered his arms, chest, back, and a portion of his neck.

Emergency crews were called, and after assessing the severity of Kevin’s burns, it was determined that he needed a higher level of specialized burn care. He was immediately airlifted to the UCSD Regional Burn Center in San Diego. His parents followed, leaving

their home and everything that was familiar behind. Kevin’s prognosis was grim.

Since 1972, the Burn Institute has played an integral role in transforming burn victims into burn survivors. The Burn Institute specializes in burn support and understands the pain and suffering associated with a severe burn injury. There are many different support programs available at the Burn Institute, and all of them are free of charge to residents who reside within the Burn Institute’s service area. One such program is the Emergency Needs Fund. This fund specifically provides for emergency housing for low-income families of burn patients while their loved ones are being treated at the UCSD Regional Burn Center. It also provides for emergency transportation to and from the burn center for required follow-up treatment, and meals.

When the Chavez family arrived at the UCSD Burn Center in San Diego, they did not have any friends or relatives they could stay with in the area. Staff from the burn unit automatically contacted the Burn Institute and assistance from the Emergency Needs Fund was quickly available to the Chavez family. In addition to emergency housing, the fund also provided the Chavez

Fourth Annual Bash Was a Splish Splash Success

On Saturday, May 13, nearly six dozen burn survivors and their families enjoyed a splash-ing good time at the Wave Waterpark in

Vista. Each year, the Burn Institute and the Vista Sunrise Kiwanis Club partner up to sponsor this special “Family Day” outing, which includes FREE admis-sion and lunch at the park for all burn survivors and their families.

With the sun shining and San Diego North County Inland temperatures hovering in the mid 70’s, everyone had a splashing good time. Burn survivors

enjoyed swimming, sliding, making new friends and meeting up with old ones too. Everyone who attended this 4th annual event received a beach towel silk screened with the Kiwanis and Burn Institute logos.

The Burn Institute would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Vista Sunrise Kiwanis Club, Mike Cavataio, Jill White, TJ Lockwood, Ann Deslaurier, Abram Nunn, the Wave Waterpark and MFM Enterprises.

Dear Burn Institute,A little note just to say, thanks to you…it’s a better day! A thank you doesn’t seem enough for all you’ve done.

I will always care about all of you for the rest of my life. Your support is great. May god bless you all.

Love, Kevin

With each passing year, more heroes are added to the Burn Institute’s Spirit of Courage family. This year, 14 individu-

als were honored for their heroic actions in an effort to save another from burn injury or death by fire. On Thursday, May 25, nearly 500 guests gathered at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina for the 33rd Annual Spirit of Courage Awards Banquet.

This year’s banquet was emceed by KNSD 7/39 News Anchor Marty Levin and assisting Marty with the awards presentation was KNSD Weather Anchor Pat Brown. The evening began with a warm welcome from Ron Saathoff, President of San Diego City Firefighters Local 145 followed by the presentation of colors by the National City Color Guard. The National Anthem was sung by Alfonso Le Alcala, who was the recipient of the Institute’s first Spirit of Courage Award back in 1974.

This year also featured the presentation of the inaugural San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Associa-tion Maltese Award. The award, established in 2006, recognizes the achievements of an individual for their outstanding efforts in protecting and preserving the health and welfare of others and whose extraordinary service to the community

embodies the spirit and beliefs of the fire service. Carlsbad Fire Chief Kevin Crawford, President of the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association, presented the award to Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO for Scripps Health.

In 1994, the Burn Institute established the Pamela R. Kelly Volunteer of the Year Award to honor late Fire Prevention Officer Pam Kelly, who worked for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Pam was well known for her tireless volunteer efforts throughout San Diego County. This prestigious award is now presented annually in appreciation of their continued, dedicated support and service to the Burn Institute. This year’s award recipient was Sycuan Deputy Fire Chief Mitch Villalpando.

Later in the evening, Jim Hansen, Burn Institute Board President, presented the 2006 Community Hero Award to Steve Hoffman from Modern Postcard. Over the past year, Modern Postcard has donated tens of thousands of dollars in printing donations and event sponsorships to support the Burn Institute’s important work in the community. Modern Postcard will serve as the Title Sponsor of FIRE EXPO 2006, scheduled for July 22, 2006. Congratulations to Steve and the entire Modern Postcard team!

Local Residents Continue to “Give Burns the Boot”

In addition to Cinco de Mayo, May 5 was also Firefighters’ Night at The Padres. Lining the first and third base paths of Petco Park, nearly 100 uniformed

firefighters stood before a nearly sold-out crowd for a hometown salute. The pre-game ceremony featured special on-field ceremonies including a firefighter tribute video played on the Padres Vision and young burn survivor and Honorary Chair Karen Cruz threw out the first pitch. Proceeds from special game tickets sold benefited the Burn Institute. The Institute would like to

If you happened to see a firefighter holding out a boot on the morning of May 3, and just outside of Petco Park just before Firefighters’ Night at the Padres on May 5, you were a witness to something special – the 7th Annual “Give Burns The Boot,” Firefighter Boot Drive. Hundreds of uniformed firefighters hit the streets to help raise more than

$180,000 for the Burn Institute.

Located throughout busy intersections around San Diego County, firefighters held their boots out while passing drivers generously helped fill them with spare change, ones, fives, twenties and yes, even $100 bills. The boot drive has become one of the Institute’s most successful events – last year’s boot drive raised more than $142,000. All proceeds benefit Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs and Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children.

The top fire department fundraisers and winners of the coveted Bronze Boot Trophy were: Chula Vista (South Bay), San Diego Rural (East County), Rancho Santa Fe (North County), and Batallion I, B Division (San Diego City). This year, an additional Bronze Boot Trophy was added for the “01 Challenge,” to be presented to the top “01” Fire Chief who raised the most money. A big congratulations to Chief Nick Pavone from Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, who single handedly, raised more than $2,700. The Burn Institute extends its heartfelt appreciation to all the firefighters who participated in the 7th Annual Boot Drive and to the compassionate residents of San Diego County who supported their efforts. Above is a list of each participating fire agency, and their achievements.

The 2006 Pamela R. Kelly Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Deputy Fire Chief Mitch Villalpando from the Sycuan Fire Department. Chief Villalpando is a member of the Burn Institute’s Board of Directors, and for the past several years, he has served as the chair of the

San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association Annual Golf Tournament – the tournament has raised in excess of half a million dollars for the Institute. Chief Villalpando has also been instrumental in obtaining significant community support and donations for the Burn Institute. We take great pleasure in congratulating Chief Mitch Villalpando on this great achievement.

Sycuan Chief Receives Pam Kelly Award

With temperatures still considered mild in Imperial Valley, the 7th Annual Fire Ball still heated up a Friday evening in late March for more than 400 guests at the Barbara Worth Resort & Country Club. The event featured an exciting silent auction, casino fun and special awards to area firefighters. Ten firefighters from

throughout the valley were honored with the Institute’s Exceptional Service Award. Award recipients were: Lieuten-ant Ryan Kelly, Brawley Fire Department; Fire Inspector George Chavez, Calexico Fire Department; Firefighter Vicente Casarez, Calipatria Fire Department; Captain Alex Silva, Centinela State Prison Fire Department; Firefighter Joe Bernal, El Centro Fire Department; Firefighter Jesus Guzman, Holtville Fire Department; Firefighter Robert Malek, Imperial County Fire Department; Firefighter Jose Gonzalez, Mexicalli Fire Department; Firefighter Jackie Loper, Westmorland Fire Department; Firefighter Bill Kereluk, Yuma Fire Department.

More than $18,000 was raised to benefit Burn Institute programs throughout the Imperial Valley. The Burn Institute-Imperial Valley programs and services are provided at no cost and are available in both English and Spanish. A very special thank you to Cheryl Walker, Gene Hill, Victor Jaime, Fire Ball Event Chairs Michael Anderson and Christine Oczkowski, the entire Fire Ball Committee and all the volunteers who helped make this a wonderful event. Don’t miss next year’s Fire Ball scheduled for March 30, 2007. If you would like to join the event committee, contact Erika Sumner at (858) 541-2277 x20 or [email protected]
