We appreciate parent feedback so if you have any thoughts, ideas or questions about anything in term 1 please pass them onto us through a phone call or email. Interviews It was great to see so many parents and caregivers attending parent/teacher/student interviews last week. The new format with teachers together in the stadium seemed to work well. To support student progress we encourage you to continue to communicate with teachers throughout the term, particularly if you have any concerns, as our next major reporting event is the issuing of formal written reports at the end of the semester. Lions Club sale Recently we were able to do some cleaning up of the Agricultural Area and in the process raised $1100 for the school and $200 for the Lions Club. Thank you to Dominic Clark, Damon Crawford, Donald Downing, Ben Joubert, and Darren Robinson, who brought utes, trailers, a loader and a truck and spent Friday evening and Saturday morning moving items for the sale, and without whom this wouldn’t have been possible. GROUNDS PERSON VACANCY In the last 12 months Sarah Agnew has done a fantastic effort in our grounds and maintenance activities. She has genuinely cared for the appearance of the school and the condition of facilities for student use. Unfortunately Sarah Agnew has finished with JCS this week, and whilst we wish her well for the future, it also means we are now advertising for her replacement. A 15.25 hour position will be advertised in the local papers and on DECD jobs online. Details on the position are available from our front office, however applications must be submitted through the DECD jobs online website. If you have any questions, or have difficulty locating the vacancy on the website, please contact the school. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday and we will see you in Term 2, Mat AGRICULTURE If any members of the community have a few spare bags of barley and/or faba beans or a bale or two of wheaten hay it would be very greatly appreciated. If you can help with a donation please contact Mr Goss at the school.

Well, Term 1 certainly went extremely fast! I have thoroughly enjoyed my new role so far and I wish to thank all the R-6 staff, students and parents for their support so far this year. Hopefully we can continue to build our relationships even further. On Friday there will be a whole school assembly that will start around 1.45pm in the stadium. Students will be dismissed from there at approximately 2.15pm. Teachers from R-6 have chosen two students from each class, student of the term and most improved. These students will be presented with these awards at the R-12 assembly on Friday afternoon. These are separate to the R-6 awards that are presented weekly. Teachers will notify parents to ensure you are present at assembly. On Tuesday 24 March, Mercer SuperCycle Team did a visit to the school on their way around the state to raise money for the Hospital Research Foundation. The students

were fantastic whilst waiting for the cyclists to arrive, showing their dancing skills (even Mrs Duffy showed us what she can do!) Super Sid made an entrance and entertained the students whilst the cyclists had a rest. Super Sid presented students with prizes for their colouring and designing abilities. Congratulations to the students who won prizes. Some of the bikes that were designed were amazing! Massager, finger nail painting, iPod, and numerous other marvellous add-ons I would never have thought would appear on a bike! The cyclists were most impressed with the designs! SRC donated $100 to the Hospital Research Foundation to help raise money for accommodation for country patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for cancer treatment patients.

On Monday 30 March, the R-6 students participated in Christian Seminars. Thank you to the Chaplaincy Support Group for providing these seminars to our students. They were very well received by all students who participated.

A huge thank you to Chaplaincy Support Group for providing the school with a Hot Cross Bun breakfast on Thursday 2nd April. It was delicious! The R-6 students thoroughly enjoyed their Easter egg hunt that the Year 10 students and Miss Denton helped with. All these events and activities would not be possible if people did not provide their time to support JCS as an R-12 school. It is greatly appreciated.

Open morning on Thursday and students will be participating in ANZAC activities. Thanks to Helen Lehmann and Kerry Duffy for organising the activities.

A reminder that R-6 assembly is on Friday mornings at 9am. This is a great opportunity for students to be recognised for their great work. So please come along and support the R-6 students and teachers. As always if you have any queries or concerns about your child or issues with the school please do not hesitate to contact me at the school or via email [email protected]. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

7-10 Showcase Assembly ORROROO EXCURSION The Year 4/5 class and the Year 3 class paid a visit to Orroroo to investigate evidence of indigenous life last Wednesday. We first visited the big gum tree, which is more than ten metres in circumference, and over 500 years old.

Next stop was the park by the tourist trail beside the golf course. We divided into 6 groups and set off along the creek towards the reservoir. Along the way we had to choose the most suitable site for a Ngadjuri camp site. Some sites had cave type rock formations and one had a very large water hole. The trail led up the ridge to overlook the reservoir. On the way back there were hills and angry ants for us to get through. At last we could see the yellow colour of our buses and we rested with a picnic lunch. Some people even tried to catch something with string and a stick in the waterhole.

Learning

You are invited to

attend on:

Thursday 9th April, 2015 at 9am in the Stadium.

Nutt's cottage was our after lunch destination. Here we saw how the first white settlers lived in a small house decorated with old wares and furniture.

The final stop was the oval playground where we had iceblocks and a play. Thank you to Mrs Duffy for planning the excursion, Mr Seddon for driving a bus, Mrs Broad and Mrs Carkle as extra teachers and Mrs Smallacombe as our parent helper. Helen Lehmann Year 3 teacher SAPSASA NEWS Congratulations to Cassie Joubert and Natalie Dewell who were selected to represent the North Eastern SAPSASA swimming team as a result of their performances at the swimming trials held earlier in the term. Both girls travelled to Adelaide to compete in the Country State Championships on Friday the 27th March at the SA Aquatic Centre at Marion. Well done on their efforts to compete in such a high standard event and thank you to the parental support.

Congratulations to Troy Ritchie who has been selected to represent North Eastern in the SAPSASA Football team to compete in Adelaide in term 2. We wish Troy and his team all the best at the carnival. Darren Woolford, (Sports Coordinator) THANKYOU Thank you to Scott and Luke Clark who kindly donated and recently spread Gypsum on the school oval. This will help to improve and maintain the condition of this great play space we have at our school. We really do appreciate the support we receive from community members.

INDIGENOUS GAMES The Year 9 HPE class have been learning a selection of games and activities that were, and in some cases are still played in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies. Last Thursday, the Year 9 students taught these games to the Junior School students, which proved

a very positive experience for all involved. ‘We liked the first game we played called Koolchee. We had to bowl the ball and knock the cane over’ Brodie & Ethan (Year 2 class). ‘We had lots of fun and we hope to play the other games another day’ Hayley, Kobe, Harper & Hannah (Year 2 class)

NAPLAN The NAPLAN is a nationally developed program which is conducted simultaneously in all schools across Australia. NAPLAN tests will be conducted for all Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 students next term on 12-14 May. During this week students sit a variety of tests which assess their competency in Literacy: reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar and Numeracy: number; algebra, function and pattern, measurement; chance and data; working mathematically and space. This year the students will respond to either a narrative or a persuasive writing prompt. All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. During our recent interviews, teachers discussed the possibility of providing adjustments for students with learning difficulties. This can only be done in some areas of the tests. Parents are able to withdraw their children from the test on the grounds of religious or philosophical objections. To do this parents or caregivers must apply for a form from the school and this must be lodged by Friday 10th April, (this Friday). Prue Hunter
