3 Month Price Stock Level

As we move through 2011, the outlook for aluminiumappears to be improving despite the record inventories –some 4.7m tonnes in LME warehouses alone –overhanging the marketplace. Strong demand growth inChina and elsewhere is underpinning prices, with valuestrending upwards from around $2400 at the start of 2010to over $2600 mid-year, and analysts forecasting anaverage price for the year of $2600-2700 per tonne.

Continued healthy demand will be needed to eat into theinventory mountain; much will also depend on how tightlyLME warehouse stocks are held and whether measuresare taken to make this material more easily accessible bymetal users. In the meantime – and with good offtakeacross the market segments – strong physical premiumswill continue to be a feature.

Metal Bulletin Events has put together a top-notch,international line-up of speakers to give you the bestinsight into industry dynamics in 2011 and beyond, andhelp you make sound business decisions in anincreasingly complex marketplace.

Featuring key speakers from the transportation, packaging and construction sectors, representatives ofthe all-important Chinese and Indian aluminiumindustries, experts on energy, raw materials and smelting, rolling and extruding, as well as practitioners from thephysical and derivatives trading worlds, there will be noshortage of opportunity to enhance your industryunderstanding – AND make the most of the biggestgathering of aluminium industry executives this year tonetwork and sign deals for 2012.

France and aluminium – almost 200 years of partnership

The association between France and thealuminium industry goes back nearly two centuries. The main raw material for aluminium production, bauxite, was named after the village Les Baux insouthern France, where it was first recognised ascontaining aluminium and named by the Frenchgeologist Pierre Berthier in 1821. Aluminium wasproduced in small quantities for a number of years

but the cost of production made its widespread industrial useprohibitive. All that changed when in April 1886 French chemist PaulHéroult (pictured above) filed a patent for the production ofaluminium by fused-salt electrolysis of alumina dissolved in a moltencryolite bath (almost simultaneously in the USA American chemistCharles Martin Hall was filing a similar patent – which gave rise toHall-Heroult method as the conventional way of producing themetal). The first aluminium smelter was established in France in 1889and three years later saw the establishment of a smelter in theMaurienne valley at La Praz, the first of a series that would earn thearea the title of “aluminium valley”. Pechiney, a name for so longassociated with French aluminium, had its roots in the 19th centurythough it was not until the 1920s that it started commercialproduction of aluminium (the company’s aluminium business liveson now as part of Rio Tinto Alcan and of course through the world-renowned AP smelter cellhouse technology).
