Pedestrian hit by car

An on-duty security guard was hit by a car on Friday, 1 July, at about 12:40 in front of ABSA. Captain Nhlabathi of Standerton Police Sta-tion said the guard crossed the road when a person driving recklessly, hit him with his car . Jeria Ambulance Services were quickly on the scene to assist with medical treatment . The guard suffered a compound fracture to his left leg . A large number of people immediately gathered and the flow of traffic was disrupted for a long time. Police are currently investigat-ing the matter .

STANDERTON - Traffic was disrupted for almost two hours on Hlongwane Drive on Monday, 4 July. Lekwa Municipal Traffic Officers and Police Officers diverted traffic to alternative routes in Sakhile when the body of a man knocked down by a car laid mo-tionless in the middle of the road.

The incident occurred at around 17:00 when people were driving back into Sakhile from work. Police report that the 34-year-old man was crossing the road when he was knocked down by a car travel-ling out of Sakhile. When paramedics arrived on the scene, the man was confirmed dead.

His family, including his mother, arrived at the scene before his body was taken to the mortuary. Captain David Nkosi, reports that the driver of the car was arrested and charged with culpable homi-cide. He is due to appear in court. DM

STANDERTON - The railway bridge is one of the first things residents and visitors traveling from Meyerville to Standerton see before crossing the river. While the youth branch of AfriForum tries their best to make a positive impression by repainting road mark-ings and cleaning the surrounding areas, a political party decided that the bridge is the best billboard for their campaign ads.

Even the chevron was covered, which is clearly a criminal of-fence. No names are on the posters, but everyone can decide for themselves who the culprits are. JD

Twee inwonende assistente, Chané de Ru (links) en Annandré Lessing (regs) het Maandag vroegoggend reeds - met roller in die hand - die verblykte blokke op die eiland op pad na Meyerville oorgeverf. Agter hulle staan Mari-Louise Coetzer, Standerton tak se sekretaresse en Nadia Smith, die ondervoorsitter. Die jeugtak het reeds Saterdag begin om die padmerke oor te verf en rommel te verwyder.

A political party defaced the bridge with their campaign posters. It would be interesting to see if these posters will be removed after the upcoming elections.

Fire bin claims two lives

Two men, under the age of 30, suffocated on Monday night on a farm just outside Standerton, when they took their home made fire bin (mbaula) inside the small room where they lived. It is presumed that the men were overwhelmed by the fumes and died. An emergency call, requesting police assistance, was made at 20:47 when the bodies were found. The police are investigating the incident, but at print the names of the deceased were not yet released. (Photo for illustration purposes only)

STANDERTON - Police believe they are making progress in the case of a house breaking and robbery syndicate that has been terrorising residents for the last two months. This follows the arrest of two suspects in Rooikoppen on Tuesday, 28 June.

It is reported that a SAPS Special Unit assigned to the case, along with the K9 Unit reacted to a tip-off by concerned members of the community about a house that is suspected to be used as headquarters for the syn-dicate. Upon their arrival, police found possible stolen household goods and clothes. Three suspects aged 23, 32 and 33 were arrested for possession of suspected sto-len goods.

Police report that the suspects confessed that they have robbed several houses in Kosmos Park. The in-formation helped the police to trace people that were robbed recently in the area including a 74-year-old man who was robbed and whose abandoned vehicle was then found in Sakhile. Two victims of house breaking and

house robbery respectively came to the station and posi-tively identified their goods. Captain Johannes Nhla-bathi confirmed that all the recovered goods, including jewellery, are kept at the station and he encouraged peo-ple who were robbed in Kosmos Park to come forward to identify their belongings.

In addition three other suspects were arrested for bur-glary at the newly built unoccupied houses in Extension 8. Mr Ronnie van Niekerk, the site manager at Exten-sion 8 Housing Project, reports that he spotted the sus-pects behaving in a suspicious manner and confronted them.

When he investigated further, he found hardware sto-len from the unoccupied houses. He managed to appre-hend two suspects, but one fled the scene and was later arrested by Kasselman Security Services. Cpt Nhlabathi confirmed that the three suspects were charged with bur-glary and all six arrested suspects will appear in court in due course. DM

GREYLINGSTAD - A police officer stationed at Greylingstad was driving on the R23 from Standerton to the Greylingstad Police Station on Monday, 4 July. Along the way she became suspicious of a car in front of her and called the station for backup with the intention to stop and search the vehicle. Constable Kleynboy Selepe and his colleague responded to the call and when they spotted the car they ordered the driver to pull over.

There were four occupants inside the car and when the officers searched the boot of the vehicle in question, they discovered numerous bags of dagga. The four occupants of the car aged 23, 25, 31 and 46 were arrested on the spot. Cst Selepe, the communication officer of Greylingstad SAPS, reports that the suspects are from Swaziland - they told police that they were transporting the dagga to the North-West Province.

“The suspects were charged with dealing dagga that weighs 82.7 kg with a street value of R70 000 and are due to appear in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court soon,” Cst Selepe said. DM

Hundreds of South African tax payers came to the offices of the South African Revenue Service in Stand-erton to submit their tax returns on Friday, 1 July. Long queues were a true testimony that South Africans are heeding the government’s call to pay taxes. According to SARS officials, the turnout was a remarkable success on the first day. People are assured that the services are of high standard with well trained person-nel to cope with high volumes of people.

Sy het in 2013 haar diploma aan Potchefstroom Aka-demie verwerf en spog nou ook met ‘n hoër diploma wat sy aan die Tshwane Universi-teit vir Tegnologie verwerf het. Landsberg het as gevolg hiervan keuring vir haar graadkursus verkry en is tans hárd aan die werk vir ‘n BTech-graad wat sy in die vol-gende jaar gaan voltooi.

Are you one of those people with the unquestionable belief that if you do something good, you should receive a reward and if you do something bad or make a mistake, you can expect to be punished for it? If you are, don’t panic! Until a few years ago, I also strongly believed this, and because I am a Christian, doing and being good was something I ranked as at least top 3 on my priority list. This however made me extremely judgemental towards others and myself.

I used to have conversations with my husband about how blessed others around us were who, according to my opinion, weren’t nearly as faith-filled and holy as I believed we were. Then I read the scripture above and my whole belief system was shaken. The ‘letter’ refers to the law. Prerequisites in the Old Testament or Old Covenant which all had to be met according to God’s standards before God’s blessings could

be commanded on a believer’s life. I read, “the letter kills” and my heart

stopped a beat. Then I read: “the Spirit gives life!” and I went into research mode. In 2 Corinthians 5: 21 it says that God made Jesus who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. People were not given God’s Spirit in the Old Covenant, but in the New Covenant true believers are given God’s Holy Spirit (Romans 7: 6). I realised that what God desires, is for us to stop trying to please Him by trying to obey the law but to start stepping into our righteous standing, our sins, weaknesses, infirmities and sicknesses having been crucified with Jesus Christ on the cross over 2000 years ago.

He wants us to always judge our righteousness before Him out of our permanent standing through Jesus’s perfect work on the cross and not out of our state of vulnerability or failure at any stage during the day. Our righteous standing in Christ is eternal while our moments of failure each day are temporal. You are eternally righteous in Jesus Christ, blameless and free! Stop forgetting it and start praising Him for it. This is where true healing begins!

STANDERTON - Inwoners en besoe-kers van Meyerville kan hulle gereed-maak vir ‘n nuwe inkopie ervaring. Die skoonmaak van die terrein op die hoeke van Nelson Mandelarylaan en Dannhau-serstraat is reeds goed op dreef en bou-werk sal eersdaags begin.

Volgens mnr Dippenaar, die ontwikke-laar, sal daar ‘n Engen ‘1-stop’ vulstasie opgerig word. ‘n Winkel wat daaglikse

noodsaaklikhede en ook kruideniersware verkoop asook ‘n ‘Barchelos Flame Grilled Chicken’ wegneemete-restaurant vorm deel van die ontwikkeling.

Die hele erf gaan hiervoor gebruik word en die sentrum sal vragmotor vrien-delik wees met genoegsame parkeer en draai geriewe.

Die beplande opening van hierdie sen-trum is Desember vanjaar. JD

Op Dinsdagaand , 28 Junie die gebruiklike uitstallersfunksie plaasgevind en die tema was Karnaval.

Meer as 300 uitstallers moes aantrek vol-gens die tema. Die funksie was propvol spookasem, toffie-appels, springmielies, en soetgoed om van te kies en te keur.

The Board and Directors of Kosmos Retirement Village take note of the content of the letter (Quo Vadis) published in a previous issue of Cosmos News. As part of a continuous improvement drive, a number of processes (before the publication of this letter) have been initiated to review the management structure as well as certain processes and procedures in the old age home.

As the Kosmos Retirement village serves the wider Standerton community, we urge all stakeholders to act in the interest of this village and to support it in any which way possible. We believe the answers to a number of issues raised are not in the hands of a few selected individuals, but in the minds and hearts of the very community the retirement village serves.

Let us preserve what is currently in place

at the village (clean audit reports, beautiful facilities and gardens, a well-functioning frail care centre, committed staff members, passionate volunteers, etc.). Let us also constructively resolve those matters that deviate from our dream of having the best old age home in the wider Gert Sibande District.

For the interim, we urge that that we all uphold the following principle in all our interactions and dealings: “A person is innocent until proven guilty”. In addition, let us all seek first to understand our different perspectives on important matters before we pre-maturely reach conclusions. Now is the time (in the interest of the elderly) to take hands and to walk the path together. Hier pronk Ansie saam met Xavier Carstens wat as wenners van Koeke-doortjie wat op 1 Julie by die Innibos Kunstefees plaasgevind het.

Brandsiekte is ‘n hoogs aansteeklik en verwoestende velsiekte onder skape. Dit is ‘n beheerde siekte onder die Wet op Dieresiektes en moet onmiddellik aangemeld word by die naaste staatsveearts of dieregesondheidstegnikus. Hierdie siekte word veroorsaak deur ’n klein velparasiet (Psoroptes communis ovis). Die myt is ongeveer 0.8 mm lank en kan skaars met die blote oog gesien word. Hierdie siekte is sedert die sewentiende eeu endemies in Suider Afrika. Ten spyte van aggresiewe behandelingsstrategieë kon dit nog nooit uitgewis word nie.

Die siekte word versprei deur direkte kontak tussen skape. Brandsiekte kan ook deur mense , klere en voertuie van skaap tot skaap oorgedra word. Goeie biosekuriteit is belangrik om jou kudde te beskerm teen moontlike besmetting van voertuie, skeerders en ander besoekers. Skaapbrandsiekmyte kan tot 17 dae oorleef in ‘n kraal waar besmette diere was en moet vir minstens 17 dae leegstaan.

Die parasiet kom hoofsaaklik op skape voor en die hele lewensiklus geskied op die skaap. In ‘n wyfie se leeftyd, lê sy tussen 40 tot 90 eiers binne sowat 30 dae. Eiers word op die rante van die letsel gelê. Nadat larwes uitgebroei het , voed en vervel hulle tot nimfe wat dan weer voed en vervel om volwasse myte te vorm. Onder optimale toestande kan die lewensiklus in slegs nege dae voltooi word. Hulle leef en voed op die veloppervlakte. Die myte prik die vel met hul monddele en voed op die limf en weefselvloeistowwe wat uit wondjies vloei. Die limf en vloeistowwe meng met dooie weefsel, stof en vuilheid , sekresies van die myte en wolvesels en olie. Daarna droog dit uit om skubbe of skurfte te vorm wat duidelik sigbaar is.

Bytplekke is geweldig irriterend vir die skaap en veroorsaak inflamasie. Liggaamsvog (bloedwei) sypel deur die vel rondom die bytplek. Bloedwei vorm ‘n kors op wol en myte beweeg na die rante van die letsel. Skape byt en krap die letsel wat dit verder laat uitkring. Hou ook dop vir kolle met gematte wol.

Twee derdes van wol gaan verlore na ses tot agt weke deurdat wol uitval of uitpluis wanneer skaap die sensitiewe velareas lek, byt, krap of skuur teen voorwerpe of ander skape. Besmette skape eet minder; stres; immuniteit teen siektes en parasiete verswak; verloor kondisie en in erge gevalle, vrek hulle. Harige skape word ook aangetas, maar in ‘n mindere mate. In die winter wanneer skape swaarkry weens koue en swakker weidingstoestande, is parasiete meer aktief. Wanneer die temperatuur in die wolvag daal, intensiteit van sonlig afneem en wolvogtigheid toeneem, floreer die brandsiekmyte eers. . Bokke en niewoldraende skape kan veral in die somer simptoomlose draers van brandsiekte wees.

Brandsiekte word gediagnoseer deur ’n stukkie wol en velskrape rondom letsels te neem en dan onder mikroskoop te bestudeer. Letsels is veral sigbaar op skouers en flanke van skaap. By ramme word die bors en nekgedeeltes aangetas, veral as hulle ooie dek. Onthou dat rooiluis ook skape kan laat krap en jeuk

Oneffektiewe behandeling is meestal die gevolg van verkeerde gebruik van middels. Alle skape en bokke op besmette eiendom moet behandel word met ‘n middel wat vir skaapbrandsiekte in die spesifieke ras goedgekeur is onder Wet 36 van 1947. Bokke moet altyd gedip word omdat skaapbrandsiekmyte nie op bokke voed nie en daarom werk inspuitbare middel nie op bokke nie. Skape kan behandel word met geregistreerde dip of inspuitbare middels. Kontak u naaste veearts vir raad oor geskikte produkte vir jou omstandighede.

Behandel nou vir skaapbrandsiekteMaak seker dat die korrekte dosis en tussenposes van dosering aangewend word. Volgens die Dieresiektewet moet besmette diere op kontakplase twee keer behandel word met tussenposes van nie minder as sewe dae en nie minder as 10 dae nie. Dit is om te verseker dat nuut uitgebroeide myte wat nog in eierstaduim was met eerste behandeling, aan voldoende konsentrasie van die middel blootgestel word. Stel ook dadelik jou bure in kennis.

Erg aangetaste skape met lang wol moet eers geskeer word voor dipproses. Skape moet in diptenk bly vir ten minste twee minute en hul koppe moet ten minste twee keer ondergedompel word tydens dipproses. Merk alle diere wat behandel is met merkink en gebruik verskillende kleure vir elke behandeling. Spuitdip is nie so effektief vir brandsiekte nie, omdat daar nie behoorlike penetrasie van dipstof is nie.

Die eienaar van eiendom onder kwarantyn is verantwoordelik vir die verskaffing van akkurate skaapgetalle, soos opgeteken na eerste en tweede behandeling. (Indien enige diere oorgeslaan is met behandeling, word dit nie as behandeling beskou nie).

Binne twee weke na die laaste behandeling moet ’n verklaring aan die staatsveeartskantoor verskaf word met die volgende inligting: Naam van produk en die dosis toegedien, afskrif van bewys van betaling met vervaldatum en groepnommer van produk, datum van eerste behandeling en aantal diere behandel, datum van tweede behandeling en aantal diere behandel en ‘n verduideliking indien getalle van mekaar verskil soos nuwe lammers gebore.

Slagting van skape kan net met ’n Rooikruis permit gedoen word. Die vragmotor sal op die plaas geseël word en dan na goedgekeurde slagpale vervoer word. Skape sal drie weke na die tweede behandeling weer geïnspekteer word en indien skoon, sal kwarantyn gelig word. Indien daar egter ‘n positiewe toets is, herhaal die hele proses weer.Voorkoming:• Hou lyndrade in goeie toestand.• Behandel alle ingekoopte diere teen brandsiekte en hou vir 14 dae in kwarantyn.• As jou diere in kontak was by skoue met ander diere, behandel en hou apart .• Moet nooit ramme of ooie uitleen vir teel doeleindes sonder om hulle voorkomend te

behandel nie.• Meld alle diere wat jeuk en krap in jou omgewing dadelik by jou naaste staatveearts

kantoor aan.• Behandel een keer per jaar jou kudde met middels wat ook brandsiekte bekamp.• Onthou indirekte oordraging deur mense, voertuie en krale kan plaasvind.• Skeerspanne wat van plaas tot plaas trek, kan ook indirekte besmetting veroorsaak,

voorsien skeerders van skoon oorpakke en ontsmet skeertoerusting.• Krale wat deur verskillende eienaars gebruik word, kan ook maklik besmetting veroor

saak.• Skape wat te voet van plaas tot plaas getrek word, kan besmetting veroorsaak.• Skaaptrokke, bakkies en sleepwaens moet altyd met effektiewe dip vir brandsiekte be

handel word.• Praktyke, skoue, veilings, voerkrale en spekulasie met skape kan ook maklik die siekte

versprei.• Dit kan ook gebeur dat plase langs hoofpaaie besmet kan raak deur stukkies wol of mis

wat van vragmotors waai met besmette diere. JD

‘n Paar wenke wat verskaf word vir die voorkoming van skaapbrandsiekte sluit die volgende in: behandel altyd skape op die swaarste skaap se gewig. Kalibreer die spuit deeglik en toets akkuraatheid voor behandeling. Maak seker dat die naald nie dwars deur vel gedruk word nie en indien moontlik, skuif skape na ’n skoon kamp waar daar vir 21 dae nie skape geloop het nie.


NATIONAL - The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) supports the call from the Secretariat of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on To-bacco Control that requires tobacco products to have plain packaging and graphic warning signs.

Plain packaging is an important reduction measure, making tobacco products less at-tractive, restricting the use of tobacco packaging to be used as a form of advertising and limiting misleading packaging and labelling. And the use of graphic (pictorial) package warnings will show the serious harmful effects of tobacco use.

Plain packaging restricts the use of logos, colours, brand images and promotional in-formation. Other countries that have implemented plain packaging are the UK, Northern Ireland and France who all passed laws to implement plain packaging as from May 2016. Tobacco consumption in Australia decreased by 13% during the three years since plain packaging was introduced.

Joubert adds, “There’s a misconception, (especially amongst the youth) that cigarettes are

the only form of smoking that can be harmful to your health and that is not true. Cigarette smoking isn’t the only harmful smoke – hubbly bubbly, e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (such as snuff, chewing-tobacco and ‘snus’) is also harmful to your body.”

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are not a safer option to smoking. They may contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals, and it does not make it easier for people to quit smok-ing. The marketing of e-cigarettes is of major concern, especially as it’s aimed at the youth to promote nicotine addiction and tobacco use. A hubbly bubbly or hookah actually takes about 100 puffs in a single session (45 min), while a cigarette smoker takes 10 puffs. So, smoking one hookah can give as much nicotine as smoking 10 cigarettes, and no – the water does not filter out the toxins.

Joubert concludes, “We really want people to make educated choices when it comes to smoking, and also about smoking in the presence of other people. As a non-smoker, you have the risk of being exposed to second-hand smoke, which is also harmful to your health. STANDERTON - The driver of a BMW died instantly while two passen-gers tra velling with him sustained seri-ous injuries following a head-on colli-sion between their car and a truck on the Vrede road on Wednesday, 29 June.

Captain Johannes Nhlabathi reports that a truck was travelling in the direc-tion of the Free State in heavy fog when the driver allegedly decided to overtake a vehicle in front of him and it resulted in a head-on collision with the BMW that was travelling in the opposite direction (towards Standerton). The truck driver reportedly sustained minor injuries.

According to the police, the accident happened 22 km outside Standerton. When the ambulance and emergency ser-vices arrived on the scene the area was still covered with heavy fog and police had their hands full to control the flow of traffic. The injured were taken to Stan-derton Hospital for treatment.

The deceased driver was taken to the government mortuary and police were able to identify him as a resident of Er-melo. His name could not be released to the media until his next of kin have been officially notified. Cpt Nhlabathi confirmed that the truck driver is facing a charge of culpable homicide. DM

Michael Crumplin het as kaptein en flank vir die span uitgedraf, terwyl Janu Lategan, Ockert Meyer en Siyabonga Khoza onderskeidelik hul vernuf as loskopstut, slot en vleuel tot die span geleen het. Al

STANDERTON - Several willing-and-able golfers participated in the Monthly Mug Competition on Saturday, 2 July. Aldo Arnaldi scored the best gross (71) in the A-division. He also won the division with a score of 66 and Casper Roux ended second with a 68 score.

The B-division was won by Wessel van der Merwe. He obtained the best gross (84) and ended with a nett score of 73. He was

closely followed by Nick Momberg (74). Nick also won the jackpot of the day.

Koos van Wyk obtained the best gross (97) in the C-division. He also won this division with a 78 score. Jacques Scholtz, with a score of 79, ended in second place.
