By Phathutshedzo LuvhengoA member of the South African Air Force, Sgt Ndaedzo Muvhenzhe, was laid to rest over the weekend.

Muvhenzhe (33), the husband of Daily Sun staffer Kamogelo Muvhen-zhe of Ha-Mavhunga in the Nzhelele area, fell ill a fortnight ago and rushed himself to a local hospital, where he later died.

In honour of his dedication to his work as a soldier, members of the defence force came in their numbers to bid him farewell. A large group of friends, community members and relatives filled a tent that was erected at the yard adjacent yard to the United African Apostolic Church's head-quarters at Ha-Mavhunga, where the funeral service was held.

The funeral followed a memorial service held at his base in Hoedspruit last week.

The beating of Zi-onist drums character-ized the funeral service before he was buried at the local Mavhun-ga cemetery. Paying homage to the soldier, Capt Jeffrey Selowa described Muvhenzhe as a valued member of the South African Air Force. “He was a disci-plined member of the air force, who contributed immensely to the air force in many ways. We enjoyed working with him and we will remember him for his ever-smiling face and the desire to learn every

day,” Selowa added.Chief Samuel Netshiavha said the

death of young people was becoming a source of concern in the community. “Who will bury the elderly people when they die as the young ones are the ones who are dying these days? Death takes those we love most and this affects us negatively, emotionally and financially, as those who die are mostly breadwinners,” he said.

The deceased’s wife, Kamogelo, said death had dealt the whole family a terrible blow. "Just last December we had a white wedding, and three months ago we were blessed with a baby daughter. We were in the com-pleting stages of our dream house. As things were starting to shape up, death snatched him from us. We are greatly saddened and we will always remember him," she said.

“We want nothing less than our own municipality”

Cattle took over the town on Friday as there was a total stay-away.

Malamulele resembled a ghost town, with ev-erything coming to a standstill for the day. The community on Friday embarked on a complete shutdown, with schools, businesses, taxi rank and offices closed in the area spanning more than 100 settlements

The shutdown was as a result of promises made by political leaders just before the elections for a speedy resolution to the municipal issue at Malam-ulele. Members of the Malamulele community want to break away from the Thulamela municipality and have their own municipality.

The shutdown was decided upon when the com-munity felt that the ANC and the government had reneged on their decision to conclude the matter by July 31. They said that Pres Jacob Zuma has said, on visiting the area in April, that he was committed to seeing the matter concluded “as soon as possible.” Prior to the national elections, ANC leaders Ruth Bhengu, Billy Masetla and Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele spent a long time in Malam-ulele, talking to ANC structures to persuade them and the community to vote. During that time, it was mentioned that Premier Stan Mathabatha and SACP deputy secretary general Solly Maphaila had also indicated that they believed the Malamulele community’s demands were reasonable.

Unlike previous stay-aways that left the town a mess, the town was deserted. The situation was

calm, with only a handful of people and police placed at strategic points around the town. On Sunday, the community held a meeting at the local boxing gym and it was decided to suspend the stay-away.

However, the Malamulele De-marcation Task Team said that the community would not back down until they were given their own mu-nicipality. Task team secretary Dr Jan Nkuna said the community had

suspended the stay-away "in order to give negotiations a chance. We are are to meet Min Pravin Gordan in Pretoria. We want nothing less than what our people demand. We are not representing ourselves but the community, who want their own mu-nicipality. We expect the government to give us the municipality,” he said.

The Malamulele police spokesper-son commended the community for a peaceful meeting and stay-away.

Marakele National Park best in northern cluster

Some of the winning employees, photographed with the parks manager during the SANparks northern region annual awards.

Photographed during the awarding ceremony are, from left to right, Mr Johan Taljaard (Marakele National Park manager), Mr Risenga Craven Mashave (Regional manager's special award winner) and Mr Property Mokoena (Regional general manager).

The Marakele National Park in the Waterberg biosphere received the award as the northern cluster's Park of the Year during a ceremony held at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage site a fortnight ago.

SANparks' northern cluster parks comprise Mapungubwe, Marakele and the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The annual awards acknowledge excellent work of committed em-ployees and it is one of the initiatives driven by the annual Kudu awards intended to award excellence throughout SANparks. The ceremony also meant to instil a culture of achievements and excellence, encourage excellent performance and ensure a continuous quality service for the stakeholders.

Employees, mostly from Marakele Park, walked home with most of the accolades during Friday's ceremony. Mr Risenga Craven Mashave received the most prestigious award of the day, namely the regional manager's special award. This award also came with a R3 000 prize.

SANParks' northern regional manager, Mr Prop-erty Mokoena, said the ceremony would motivate the team of at least 400 employees in the northern region to compete and uplift the region to the highest level. “We are celebrating those employees who work tirelessly in their daily jobs,” he said.

Mr Mokoena said the northern region national parks were very complex and faced many challeng-es. “Our parks are buffer zones. We worry not only about animals, but also about how we can connect with people. I am here to provide a platform and support,” added Mr Mokoena.

Pr izes were a lso awarded in other catego-ries, such as: Reception of the Year, Camp of the Year, Best Ranger Post, Research and Initiatives, and Excellence in Cus-tomer Service award.

Some employees were also recognised for their involvement in the fight against rhino poaching through im-plementing innovative measures.

These measures in-clude the development and strengthening of relationships with the authorities such as secu-rity institutions to help fight poaching.

Man feigns death and survives mob attack

B y T s h i f h i w a MukwevhoB y T s h i f h i w a MukwevhoB y T s h i f h i w a Mukwevho

The moment I stepped into the mobile toilet courtyard at the

Makhado Show, maddened shouts and screams snatched my attention. When I looked to the right, I saw that a large group of mainly males was assaulting a man.

I rushed over and came to stand nearby, listening to people shouting that he deserved to be taught a lesson, so that he could stop his silly habit of snatching cell phones and handbags from powerless ladies.

There was a strong team of security offi cers around

who tried to rescue the helpless man.

As one security officer tried to

reason with the en-

raged mob, one of the men hit the security offi cer across the face with a fi st. More people shouted that the security offi cers must stop rescuing criminals because, in doing so, it might seem like they condoned acts of crime.

The team of security officers stepped back and the men continued to teach the 'thief' a lesson. Some poured cold beer on him, and another man urinated on his face and head. “You wanted to rape our sister, bhari yehiyi (you fool)!” shouted the one who urinated on him.

The victim wailed and cried, but that didn't help either while they kicked him and hit him with cans of beer. He probably feigned death to try and escape their wrath.

As I stood around, I sympathised

with the helpless, beaten man and raised my voice for all to hear. I pleaded with the mob to show him some mercy. I knew that I was also putting my life at risk. After reasoning with the mob for about 10 minutes, they listened to me and stopped beating him. The mob dispersed.

The security offi cials were not sure if an ambu-lance or the police had been called. It was about 45 minutes after the man had been assaulted. I had no numbers for the EMS ready either, so I called the Makhado SAPS's cluster commander, Brig Alex Seopa, and asked him to do 'something'. He agreed and promised to get back to me. Indeed, he called and notifi ed me that the police and ambulance had been sent for the man, who needed immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, the man was still sprawled

on the ground, his body shaking from the cold. His t-shirt was torn.

He opened his eyes and tearfully said: “I thank you for res-cuing me, brother. I am not a habitual thief. I was only try-ing my luck, so that I could sell that phone and have cash to buy beer like other people here. But now they taught me a lesson I will never forget in my life. I thank them for beating me.”

Soon the ambu-lance arrived. The personnel helped him into the ambulance An unidentifi ed woman tried to speak

with the assaulted man.

Several meetings to honour region’s womenThe Vhembe District Municipality planned several events in the region to celebrate Wom-en’s Day.

The celebrations started on Wednesday (6th) at the Makhado municipality. More than 100 women were expected to clean a local orphanage centre in the Bungeni area in an effort to highlight the challenges experienced by women in the 20 years of democracy.

The district municipality spokesperson, Mr

Esteemed photojournalist laid to restThe Minister of Communi-cations, Ms Faith Muthambi, described photojournalist Eli-jar Mushiana as a unique man who was able to express what a thousand words could not. She was addressing thousands of mourners at the Vuwani Apostolic Church on Satur-day, who came to pay their last respects to Mushiana on Saturday.

“Elijar was reliable and com-petent, but it was his hard work that made him a supreme pho-tojournalist who devoted his entire life to the media industry. He was a man of substance, who earned the respect of everyone through his consummate work, not only in Limpopo, but across South Africa. The journalism industry and South Africa as a whole have lost a truly remark-able man,” she said.

Muthambi added tha t , through his excellent work, Mushiana had demonstrated that there was room for the industry to play a role as facil-itator for development in our country. “His contributions will never be forgotten,” she said.

Veteran journalist and exec-utive director of the South Af-rican National Editor’s Forum (Sanef) Mathatha Tsedu said the journalism industry would no longer be the same without Mushiana. “He was such a re-markable photojournalist, who would capture ordinary things in an unusual manner. He did his work diligently, not for the love of monetary rewards. It is rare to find people with work passion of Mushiana’s caliber.

He was a guiding light to many young people who wanted to pursue a career in journalism, especially in Vhembe, where he originated.”

The editor of Sowetan, Mr Mpumelelo Mkhabela, said the newspaper had lost a valuable asset that would be difficult to replace. “His pictures were outstanding and he was one of the most loyal employees we could rely on. A dark cloud of mourning is hanging in our newsroom and things will no longer be the same without him. We thought he would recover and come back to join us but, unfortunately, God’s plan was far different from ours.”

After an emotional service at Vuwani Apostolic Faith Mission Church, Mushiana (41) was laid to rest at his fam-ily’s burial plot at Tshimbupfe village.

He was born on 28 May 1973 at Tshimbupfe Chielfarm village. He is the third-born child of his late father, Insp (Vhaingameli) Joseph Mpomo-keni Mushiana and his mother, Selinah.

He completed Grade 12 at Tshimbupfe Secondary School in 1990. During this time, he de-veloped an interest in photogra-phy. He briefly joined the South African National Defence Force but did not stay long because of his passion for photojournalism.

During the past 20 years, he worked for different media houses as a freelance photojour-nalist. These include Limpopo Mirror, City Press, Capricorn Voice, Sunday Sun, Sunday

World, Sunday Times, Drum Magazine, Pace Magazine and Next Magazine. At the time of his death, he was photographic head of the Limpopo bureau of Sowetan in Polokwane.

When all local journalists were practicing their trades in the streets, Mushiana was the first one to establish an office in the heart of Thohoyandou. This was followed by the opening of his own news agency, called Northern Independent Press Association (NIPA), in 1993. He was a founder member of Vhembe Media Forum, of which he served as chairperson for two years in succession.

As a prolific and versatile me-dia practitioner, Mushina won more than 20 awards during his lifetime, in addition to be-ing crowned the 2012 Sowetan Photographer of the Year. A community builder in his own right, Mushiana taught photo-graphic skills to local young journalists, free of charge. He strived for unity among the media fraternity by organizing countless workshops and award ceremonies to motivate fellow journalists.

A staunch member of the Old Mission Zion Apostol-ic Church, the ever-smiling Mushiana lost his battle with colon cancer at Polokwane Mediclinic on 27 July. He was furthering his studies with the University of South Africa at the time of his death.

He is survived by his mother (Selinah) two sisters (Mashudu and Livhuwani) and a brother (Joshua).

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, Sowetan Limpopo Bureau Chief Frank Maponya and Sowetan editor Mpumelelo Mkhabela lead mourners to the waiting hearse.

Veteran journalist and executive director of SANEF Mr Mathatha Tsedu (left) and the executive mayor of the Vhembe district, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, lead pallbearers as the casket containing Elijar Mushiana’s remains arrives for a service at Vuwani Apostolic Faith Mission Church.

Matodzi Ralushai, said during this month the municipality would engage several stakeholders to tackle challenges that women were facing. He said the municipality increased its efforts to engage more women in the district. The municipality has several programmes throughout the year to em-power women, he added.

“We always have workshops to provide eco-nomic opportunities for women, entrepreneurial competitions within the district and we also urge women to do business with the municipality, and this will empower them,” he said.

The provincial government will host Women’s Day celebrations at the Tafelkop Stadium in the area of the Elias Motswaledi municipality in the Sekhukhune district tomorrow (Saturday). During the day, government departments and the local municipalities will be exhibiting and rendering services to the members of the community, with the main focus on women empowerment.

The Premier of Limpopo and the members of the executive council will also attend the celebrations.

The spokesperson for the provincial government, Mr Phuthi Seloba, calls on members of the public to attend the event. “The event is centred on women empowerment and it is important for women in the province to attend,” he said.

Next Saturday (16 August), the district munici-pality, in cooperation with the Musina municipal-ity, will host a Women’s Day celebration in the Nancefield community hall, and on 22 August, the Thulamela municipality will celebrate the month during an event in the Thohoyandou town hall.

The main district event, which that will close the month’s celebrations, will take place at the Thohoy-andou Arts Centre. At the time of going to press, the date was yet to be confirmed. The co-ordinator, Mr Khathutshelo Mapholi, said the event would be an opportunity for women to discuss issues that affected them. “Our women will debate issues that impact on their lives, especially about opportuni-ties for them. This will include women in politics, women in government, economic empowerment and financial independence,” said Mapholi.

The Thohoyandou police are appealing to community members who might have information about the whereabouts of Tshifhiwa Ratshilumela (photo) to please contact them urgently. They believe he could help them in solving outstanding fraud cases. He is believed to be in the Vhufuli area or at Tshakhuma village. Those with inormation are requested to contact Const Mashudu Tshisikule at 072 676 6221 or Captain Dau 082 469 1067.

Two people killed in bakkie accident After 15 years Nkomo still without waterTwo people were crushed to death when their small bak-kie was pinned underneath a truck and dragged several meters along the highway.

Another two people also sustained minor injuries in this

accident that occurred close to the entrance of the Lalapanzi Hotel on the N1 south towards Polokwane on Sunday, 27 July. According to information sup-plied, the bakkie was trying to overtake the truck when it

crashed into the truck and was dragged several meters before the driver of the truck could regain control over his vehicle.

The two occupants of the bakkie were killed on impact.

The residents in the rural village of Nkomo near Giyani continue to suffer thirst, even after many attempts at con-vincing the municipality to provide them with tankers on a regular basis.

“We last had running water some 15 years ago,” said a resi-dent, Ms Annah Ngobeni. “Each time we went to vote, we just hoped that things would change for the better. But, still, we got no change!”

The village is stony and dry, and is dottled with leafless trees.

Recently, Limpopo Mirror noticed three ladies, Ms Idah Hhlungwani (52), Ms Maria Chuma (49) and Ngobeni (51) pushing wheelbarrows in the dusty streets. They said that res-idents buy water from villagers who have got boreholes drilled in their homes. They added that a 20 litre bottle of water costs R2.

Hlungwani said that at her house they normally use about 11 bottles per day, “but when we do our washing we need more wa-ter,” she said. “It’s unimaginable that a rural, unemployed woman like me could spend around R900 per month on water!”

Ngobeni echoed Hlungwani’s statement. “We are suffering right in our dry village and we are no longer sure where to report our plight,” she said. “Sometimes our children and grandchildren go to school smelling bad as a result of not bathing properly for several days.”

Chuma said that life has been difficult for her and those of her house for all those years. “Buying water from those who have the previlege of owning a borehole is a real heartache to us, since they refuse to sell to us sometimes,” said Chuma. “They say their boreholes are getting dry, and we

can’t blame them for closing their gates! We can’t afford to drill our own boreholes. Most of us here are unemployed and have no other means of earning a living.”

Residents claimed that there were at least three dysfunctional boreholes in the village, which should have been fixed long time ago. The spokesperson for the Greater Giyani Municipality, Mr Steven Mavunda, admitted that there was a water problem in the area. “The lack of water in this area is a big challenge which the district municipality is tackling,” Mabunda said. “We believe that this issue will be addressed and that residents will finally get water at the end of the day.” He then referred the newspaper to spokesperson for Mopani District Municipality, Neil Shikwambane.

Shikwambane was not avail-able at the time of going to press.

who tried to avoid the swerving truck, scraped the side of the truck and also spun out of control.

The occupants of this vehicle were for-tunate to escape with minor injuries.

Weekend traffic on the N1 was held up for several hours while rescue work-ers struggled to lift the truck and free the pinned wreckage of the bakkie.

The bakkie’s wreckage, pinned underneath the cab of a truck. This accident occured on Sunday near the entrance of the Lalapanzi Hotel. The two occupants of the bakkie were killed on impact. Photo supplied.

Science

Get ready for the National Science WeekThe Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will, for the third year running, be participat-ing in National Science Week (NSW).

NSW 2014, organised by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Ad-vancement (SAASTA), under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), will run until 9 August.

The week, an initiative of the DST, is a countrywide celebra-tion of science, involving various

stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activ-ities during the week.

The aim of SAASTA is to advance public awareness, ap-preciation and engagement of science, engineering and technol-ogy in South Africa. SAASTA is a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF). NSW is run in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province. This year’s theme is Today’s science, tomorrow’s world.

The SAC will focus on as-tronomy, space technology and mathematics during the week at the venues below, starting two days earlier, on 31 July, to co-incide with the annual Makhado Show. Various activities will be run, including the opportunity to look at the sun, moon, Sat-urn, stars and deep-sky objects through a telescope, discussions and demonstrations, and hand-out material, including posters and career information, will be available.

Mphaphuli school wins books and mobile libraryLearning and teaching at Mphaphuli Secondary School near Thohoyandou will change for the better, after the school’s boys soccer team won a mobile library in the recent Express Store soc-cer tournament.

The school won a mobile library to the value of R60 000, some 250 educational books, soccer kits and a trophy.

The principal, Mr Lufuno Mulaudzi, was over the moon with the prize. “We believe learning and teaching at our school will change for the better. The school

received good books, written in simple language that even Grade 8 pupils can read and understand. The books will improve the usage of the English language for our pupils,” said Mulaudzi.

According to him, although his school’s building is old and dilapidated, they are usually not performing well in sporting codes such as soccer, netball and bas-ketball. However, at academic level, the pupils are excelling, especially the Grade 12s.

The manager of Express Stores in

Limpopo, Mr William Pretorius, said it was his company’s policy to plough back into people who were doing business with them and also to invest in the future of pupils, as they are future leaders. He said apart from hosting the soccer tournament, his company also catered for the disabled.

The captain of Mphaphuli’s soccer team, Rendani Nyadzani, said the Express Store soccer tournament helped them to unearth their talent and he hoped some of the boys would eventually play for professional teams.

Drivers competed in different categories, such as for rigid trucks, rigid trucks with trailers, LDV 3.5 ton trucks, articulateds, male bus drivers and female bus drivers.

According to the deputy man-ager for road safety in the Vhem-be District, Ms Khathutshelo Netshifhefhe, accidents caused by truck drivers had made head-lines the past year. She said that it was vital for companies to employ competent drivers who abided by the rules of the road to ensure public safety and com-

pany productivity. Netshifhefhe said that the main objective of the competition was to revise the driving skills of the drivers in the country.

“The competition tests the competency of the drivers of the big vehicles, such as buses and trucks. We test all the drivers participating in the competition, both on a public road and inside the testing grounds. It’s like when a person is getting tested for a driver’s license,” she said. “Competent truck drivers will not only ensure safety on our roads, but also ensure that business productivity is increased with minimal or no cost.”

Netshifhefhe emphasised the importance of these competi-tions.

“The tests that our drivers were subjected to are just one of the strategies that the department has developed in a bid to reduce road fatalities by 50% by 2020,” she said.

The winners of the event will participate in the Vhembe cham-pionships on September 13 at Mphephu Airport.

Ms Tshimangadzo Dzegere won the first prize in the female section in the rigid-truck cate-gory.

Constance Luvhengo and Lilly Rambuda ended in second and third position respectively. Mr Raymond Rikhotso was the best LDV 3.5 ton driver, while Mr Humbulani Ramasunzi won the male division for rigid trucks with trailers.

Ms Tshimangadzo Dzegere won the first prize in the female section in the rigid truck category. Constance Luvhengo and Lilly Rambuda ended in second and third position respectively.

The annual Makhado Show was offi cial opened during a glamorous ceremony last Thursday, following a parade from the civic centre to the municipal show grounds.

The municipal mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said the show was an opportunity for families and communities to meet at one place and celebrate the existence of the Makhado municipality. The King of the Vha-Venda, Khosikhulu

Vho-Thovhele Toni Mphephu Rama-bulana, also thanked the public and all stakeholders for supporting the event.

Apart from entertainment and fun, information and education were also at the centre of the annual show. Several exhibitors disseminated information from Thursday until Saturday afternoon. Government institutions, including the Premier’s Office, the Department of Transport, local business enterprises, Makhado AFB, Vhembe District Munici-pality and the Makhado municipal library

distributed information to the public. Sgt Thomas Mulaudzi from Makhado AFB says they were not only giving the information to the public, but also exhibiting information to the pupils who were interested in pursuing careers in the South African National Defence Force.

Kuniyuki Takahashi from Japan, DJ Jack Swartz from the Netherlands, South Africa’s longest-spinning and infl uential House deejay DJ Christos and various local artists entertained the public during the music festival.

“Indigenous food is very healthy”Several residents of Tshiozwi, especially some of the elders, flocked in numbers to the Sinthu-mule tribal offices a fortnight ago to attend a project aimed at highlighting the importance of indigenous foods.

The elderly displayed indigenous food and clothing, while the guests were also entertained by impressive traditional dances. Indigenous food on display included mukusule (dried vegetables) and thophi (pumpkin).

An organisers, Mr Petrus Mamburu, said they wanted to encourage people to eat food prepared with fresh ingredients.

He expressed his gratitude towards the rural women who had provided them with information and tips on the preparation of traditional Venda cuisine.

“Indigenous food is healthy food. Our dishes are made up of food that is packed with vitamins, because the vegetables are raw and have not been kept in cold-storage rooms.”

He added that the communities must be proud of their culture and customs and not “be copycats of other peoples’ cultures. We must learn to love and appreciate our history, tradition and morality, because those are the basis from which a strong nation develops. Our indigenous languages should also be preserved for the benefit of the young generation and the community at large,” said Mamburu.

Ms Elisa Tambani said most vegetables were fat-free and low in calories, because they contained a lot of water.

“God is good.” These were the words of the Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Phaswana when he recently installed Mr Joseph Phungo as a member of the Prayer Men’s League (PML) at the Zamekomste Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa. As a member of the PML, Phungo is to lead a faithful life of daily worship. He is to set an example of being a good Christian neighbour in the church and the community. He is the chairperson of the Tshiozwi congregation and a principal in the Soutpansberg West Circuit. In our photograph are, from left to right, Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Sampie Phaswana, Mr and Mrs Livhuwani Manenzhe, Mrs Nyadzawela Joyce Phungo, Mrs Selina Phungo (Joseph’s wife), Miss Ndivhuwo Jubilant Phungo, Mr Muthuphei Joseph Phungo and Rev Collen Khuba.

Human Rights resource centre at Univen

Soccer Challenge to honour Mabena

Register now for Limpopo Tournament

Good victory for Sambandou Professionals

Ms Katherine Liao from the Offi ce of the High Com-missioner for Human Rights has urged Univen students to make use of the new human rights resource centre for research.

The recent donation of a resource centre to the law li-brary by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights forms part of the collec-tion of hard copies of law books. The centre aims to give free access to publications of the Of-fi ce of the High Commissioner

for human rights professionals, researchers, civil society and the public at large.

“High Commissioner Navi Pillay has a special bond with the University of Venda as in May 2012 she received an honorary doctorate from Univen during the celebrations of its 30 years of excellent academic scholarship and service to the country.”

According to Liao, the estab-lishment of the human rights resource centre is part of a larger project whereby the regional

office for Southern Africa of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights seeks to es-tablish centres in all countries in the area.

The dean of the School of Law, Ms Annette Lansink, welcomed the establishment of the resource centre as a “most generous gift to the University of Venda and its community. We have made enormous strides at the University of Venda, as we have almost 13 000 students and eight schools in the School of Law.”

The Mabena Soccer Challenge will be played at the Masham-ba grounds on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Mr Freddy

Teams interested in taking part in the Limpopo Women’s Soc-cer Tournament are still wel-come to register for the event. The tournament was offi cially launched during a ceremony held at the TJ Healthcare Phar-macy in Sibasa last Saturday.

The managing director of the pharmacy, Mr Musa Maluleke, who is the sponsor, indicated that he had not thought twice when he was approached for sponsorship. He mentioned that as a pharma-

According to one of the organizers, Mr Rab-son Magoro, the first matches will be played over the weekend of 23 and 24 August.

Teams not campaign-

ing in the Sasol League will be expected to register their players, while members of the Sasol League will utilize their league registration cards in the tournament.

Magoro, the managing director of Chippas United Ladies FC, further revealed that the Sasol League teams already registered for the tournament are Chippas United, Maindis, Shayandima Morning Stars, Bakone, Tshanda-ma Try Together, Merwe Ladies

FC, Botlokwa and Sisters FC. The winners of the tournament

will walk away with R5 000, a soccer ball and a fl oating trophy, while the runners-up will receive R2 000 and a soccer ball. The third- and fourth-placed teams will receive R1 000 and R400 respectively, while the teams booted out of the competition in the quarterfi nal stage will each receive a consolation prize of R150.

fl ection of the game as Phandu-laluvalo squandered numerous scoring chances within the fi rst 20 minutes.

It took them only a few min-utes to realize that it was not their day. Mbebo Nephawe received

a beautiful pass from Phathut-shedzo Masindi, but his ground cutter hit the woodwork and landed outside the fi eld of play.

Professionals gained momen-tum as the game approached the half-time mark. Unlike Phandu-

laluvalo, Professionals made use of whatever chances they got. Their captain, Tshivhona Nthangeni, who scored a brace in the match, made his presence felt in the 39th minute. He cap-italized on Ndivhuwo Ramunwana’s clearing error and beat the keeper with a half volley.

Phandulaluvalo did not stop fighting after conceding the fi rst goal. They continued to fi ght collectively, but their strikers were unlucky. United had another scor-ing chance early in the last half.

Tshimangadzo Mun-zhelele forced his way through the defence of Phandulaluvalo, but he lost possession just be-fore he unleashed from inside the box.

United Profession-als increased the mar-gin in the 78th minute. Tshivhona Nthangeni was on target with a long-range volley. The keeper of Phandulalu-valo, Millet Rambuda, watched helplessly as the ball hit the crossbar and landed across the goal line.

The r e f e r ee , Mr Christopher Mugeri, was forced to stop the fast-flowing game af-ter Murangi Likhala of Phandulaluvalo sus-tained serious injury after colliding head-on with an opponent.

A goal in the early minutes of the second half was good enough to secure Mutale Vikings a place in the final of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge at the expense of Tshibvumo Young Stars.

The match was played at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Saturday.

Realizing that it was difficult for them to match their opponents when it came to pace, Vikings abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the back and relied on counter-attacks. It was only after Young Stars had started to show some signs of tiredness that Vikings took the game to them.

That forced the Stars to play with their backs against the wall for about 15 minutes.

Young Stars were lucky not to concede an av-alanche of goals towards the end of the first half. At that stage, Vikings were doing as they pleased

in Stars’ danger area. The referee, Mr

Calvin Nemavhola, warned Rembuluwani

Maphagela of Vikings with a card four minutes be-fore the teams adjourned for half time. Maphagela tackled Thabelo Mabila from behind at the edge of the penalty box.

Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Vikings strengthened their striking force by introducing two new faces early in the last half. Vikings’ replacements were a good cause for Young Stars to press the panic button. They demonstrated this by starting to play defensive football as if they were leading.

They were severely punished for that. In the 59th minute, the boys were separated from the men. Mulavhelesi Munyai, the Vikings' overlap-ping midfielder, forced his way through the de-fence of Stars and blasted in a close-range ground cutter. Young Stars did not give in without a fight, though. They initiated some promising moves from behind, but their fighting spirit faded as they approached the opponents’ danger area. They threatened to find the equalizer in the 78th min-ute, when Hulisani Vhulahani tried his luck from outside the box, but the ball went a little wide.

Mashudu Nengovhela of Mates and Avhurengwi Ramphabana attack the ball.

By Kaizer Nengovhela

Huge victory for Madombidzha Try AgainMadombidzha Try Again pro-ceeded to the next stage of the Spar soccer tournament when they beat Tshiozwi Mates 4-1 in a replay match at Gogobole on Sunday.

The winner was determined by penalty shoot-out as the score was 1-1 after regular time.

Try Again deserved the victory as they were dictating terms in all departments. The p layers who continuously gave the Mates' defence a tough time were Jeff Machete and Makget-si Thulare.

Takalani Libada, a defender of Mates, was booked for an illegal tackle on Nda-mulelo Phathela. The Mates' keeper, An-dries Masingi, denied the opponents several sure goals through his acrobatic goal-keeping.

The Madombidzha lads did not panic, despite squandering numerous scoring chances in the open-ing minutes. Their roving midfielder, Dakalo Ramuthivhe-li, suffered the pain of watching his long-range volley go off target and miss the net by inches. Elton

Mulaudzi committed a similar blunder a little later.

No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by the Try Again goal poachers. The last half saw Mates invade the oppo-nents’ territory for long periods. Mashudu Nengovhela of Mates

opened their account in the 60th minute.

He unleashed a powerful shot from inside the box after a heartbreaking scramble.

The celebration was cut short when Jeff Machete's effort hit the back of the net to level the score.

Last Sunday was harvest day for the teams playing under the auspices of the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) last season. The asso-ciation’s prize-giving ceremony was held at the 2 Ten Hotel in Sibasa.

The general manager of MTG Funeral Services, Mr Shudufhad-za Magwabeni, indicated during the ceremony that his company will continue to sponsor the league in the coming years and promised that the sponsorship amount will increase with time. He indicated that they were im-pressed in the manner in which the association admin-istered its fi nances.

The champions from the eight streams were presented with R6 500 each. The teams that finished their league programmes on top of their respective streams, Cobra Stars, Tshambob-vu Junior Aces, Mutuwa Brazilians, Mahagala Young Stars, Tshilon-we Young Bombers, Phaphazela Real Hexa-gon, Makonde FC and Matangari High Aims, will be campaigning in the SAB League when the activities for the new season commence

in two months' time. The prizes for the MTG and

PIB Soccer Challenge were also dished out during the ceremony. The champions, Begwa United, received R15 000. They were also presented with a fl oating tro-phy, gold medals and soccer kit. The runners-up, Vondwe United Brothers, received R5 000, silver medals and soccer kit during the ceremony.

Cobra Stars (third) received R3 000 and a soccer kit, while Mu-tale Vikings (fourth), took home a cash prize of R2 000.

The teams booted out in the quarterfi nal stage, Banyini Flying

Swallows, Arsenal FC, Themba Heroes, and Shadani Dangerous Scorpions, were each presented with a consolation prize of R1 000.

During the ceremony, the sports and recreation manager of Thulamela Local Municipality, Mr Ronald Makhadi, described sports as a unifying factor. He re-vealed that the municipality was busy upgrading several stadiums, including Makonde, Saselemani and Gondeni. He also mentioned that the Makonde Stadium will be able to host PSL matches when the upgrading process comes to an end.

Thousands of people turned up at the Mabirimisa Bus service stage at the Makhado show on Saturday to watch the musan-gwe tournament. The event was offi cially opened by King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, who also celebrated his birthday on Saturday.

King Toni said that the roy-

al council was committed to preserving the Venda culture and they felt bound to support the tournament as musangwe formed part of the Venda cul-ture. He praised the organisers for bringing back the forgotten cultural sport.

The organiser, Mr Patrick Ra-marada, praised the management

of Mabirimisa bus company for their decision to sponsor the tournament, despite the economic hardships that are facing the busi-ness community in the area. He said it was important that future stars' talent be identifi ed.

Mr Robert Mabirimisa of Ma-birimisa Bus Service said that it was the policy of his company

to plough back into the community. He said that sponsorships played a vital role in sports de-velopment.

One of the fighters, Steven Nditwani, said it was the sport that he enjoyed most.

“Some say it is a primitive game, but I don’t agree, because it is like other games. It is meant to promote friendship, because we bear no grudges after the fight, even if one is defeated. This is the game of our forefathers and we will never stop following in their foot-steps.”

S teven Ndi twani showed his supporters that he was not roar-ing for nothing, when he convincingly beat his opponent, Timer Munyai. In another match, Meshack Ma-sikwa lost to Thanyani Sithavhandou. In the fight between Khetho Ndou and Khodani Nephalama, Khetho was declared the winner. The most entertaining fi ght was between Shane Ramarada and Mulalao Tshifura. Shane was declared the winner.

Huge interest in show’s musangwe fi ghts

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli (fi fth from left) has urged the netball players who will represent Limpopo nationally not only to bring back the cup but also to work hard in order to get good results at the end of the year. He recently visited the netball team of Azwifarwi Secondary before their departure for the national schools championships in Boksburg. He urged the Grade 12s to take their studies seriously in order to improve on last year’s results. “We want nothing less than a 100% this year. The exams are very near and I urge all of you to pull up your socks, so that we can come back again and celebrate,” he said.

Mrs Aluwani Nemulodi of Mulodi Young Santos (right) receives her team’s trophy from Cllrs Tshitereke Matibe and Sarah Rambuda.

The best referee, Mr Aaron Ndou (right), receives his cheque from a league offi cial, Mr S Mudau.

Prize money totaling R96 100 was distributed among the 52 teams cam-paigning under the banner of the Mu-tale Local Football Association during the association’s prize-giving ceremony at the Thondoni Lodge in Mutale last Saturday.

The overall champions, Mulodi Young

was not sound. Mudzielwana pre-

sented a cheque of R128 000 to the chairman of the association, Mr Ntodeni Mulovhedzi.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tsh-itereke Matibe, praised Mudzielwana for chan-neling part of his com-pany’s income towards football development.

He appealed to the club’s offi cials to work hard towards producing players who will feature in the various national teams.

The association’s best referee, Mr Aaron Ndou, was recognized for his outstanding per-formance last season and he received R1 000 for his achievement.

Santos, received R6 300 and a fl oating trophy. Tshixwadza Brazilians (2nd), took home R5 300. Tshiungani Young Stars (3rd) and Lamvi FC (4th), each received R4 800.

During the ceremony, it was announced that teams that fi nished their league pro-grammes on top of their respective streams would be promoted to the SAB League next season. The prize-giving ceremony was also done in conjunction with the

offi cial launching of the league sponsor. Mr Moudy Mudzielwana, managing di-rector of sponsoring company Tshikovha Environmental and Communication Consulting, appealed to the association to root out all corrupt referees if they were serious about developing football at grass-roots level. He said that it was imperative for the league to improve their fi nancial administration skills, saying no donor would like to associate himself with an institution whose fi nancial administration
