In bibliographies and footnotes, do not use the two-letter postal code stateabbreviations; rather, use the standard, and usually longer, state abbrevia-tions, e.g., Mass., not MA; Calif., not CA. Do not abbreviate states or othergeographic names in the body of a work unless they occur in parentheses.

The above list includes several abbreviations whose use we strongly dis-courage. The abbreviations f. and ff. (for references to ranges with no ex-plicitly named end point) should be replaced by an exact range. Instead ofusing op. cit. and loc. cit. for note citations, an abbreviated citation (au-thor’s last name and a short title) is preferred.

8.2 BIBLE TEXTS, VERSIONS, ETC.

Books of the Bible cited without chapter or chapter and verse should bespelled out in the main text. Books of the Bible cited with chapter or chap-ter and verse should be abbreviated, unless they come at the beginning of

There is considerable diversity in nomenclature in actual use for individ-ual documents. In most cases, it is helpful to give the number of the documentto avoid confusion. In addition to the number, the descriptive name should begiven in the initial citation to permit ease of identification. The number of thetext should not be put in italics or bold type, e.g., 4Q520, Mur16.

The first seven scrolls removed from Cave 1, as well as the Cairo Genizahcopy of the Damascus Document, are referred to customarily by name (not bynumber). The standard names and abbreviations are as follows:

1Qap Genar Genesis Apocryphon1QHa Hodayota or Thanksgiving Hymnsa

1QpHab Pesher Habakkuk1QM Milÿamah or War Scroll1QS Serek Hayaÿad or Rule of the Community1QIsaa Isaiaha

1QIsab Isaiahb

CD Cairo Genizah copy of the Damascus Document

Common abbreviations for the classification of the scrolls are as follows:

apocr Apocryphon (e.g., 1Qap Gen)ar Aramaic (e.g., 4QMess ar)gr Greek (e.g., 4QpapParaExod gr)hebr Hebrew (e.g., 4QTobe hebr)p Pesher (e.g., 1QpHab)paleo Paleo-Hebrew (e.g., 11QpaleoLev)pap papyrus (e.g., 4QpapParaExod gr)tg Targum (e.g., 11QtgJob)

When a manuscript is referred to by column and line number, romannumerals are used for the column number, followed by a space, with theline number set as arabic numerals (e.g., 1QS III, 12; 1QpHab I, 2). Manu-scripts of biblical texts can include the biblical citation of chapter and versein parentheses: 4QpaleoExodm V, 4 (9:7).

When there are several fragments and they are numbered separatelywithin a work, the fragments should be in arabic numerals. Thus, 1Q27 1 II,25 means text 27 from Qumran Cave 1, fragment 1, column II, line 25;4QpIsac 4–7 II, 2–4 means the third copy (copy c) of a pesher on Isaiahfrom Qumran Cave 4, joined fragments 4 to 7, column II, lines 2 to 4. Frag-ments are also identified by uppercase letters (e.g., 11Q1 A [Lev 4:24–26]).(While some works use lowercase column numbers, with and without thecomma [e.g., 1Q27 1 ii, 25 or 1Q27 1 ii 25], the above conventions are rec-ommended for the sake of simplicity.)

Some of the most frequently cited texts, examples from various cate-gories, and some of the texts whose names have been changed since firstpublication are given below:

Abbreviations distinguish the versions of the Talmudic tractates: y. for Jeru-salem and b. for Babylonian. A prefixed t. denotes the tractates of theTosefta and an m. those of the Mishnah. A prefixed bar. denotes a baraita(an authoritative Tannaitic rule external to the Mishnah). When citing theMishnah, a colon separates the chapter from the paragraph (i.e., mishnah);thus, m. Ber. 1:1. The standard way to cite the Talmud is by folio and side (aor b); thus, b. Ber. 2a. The third column contains nontechnical translitera-tions following the general-purpose Hebrew transliteration style (§5.1.2).

When citing a particular work only once, spell it out rather than abbreviat-ing it, especially if many readers might not be familiar with the work inquestion. If the same work is cited many times, however, or if many differ-ent works are cited, use abbreviations within notes or parentheses to avoidcluttering the book with spelled-out titles.

We have consulted a number of standard references: the various Ox-ford Greek and Latin lexicons and dictionaries, the Dictionnaire latin-françaisdes auteurs chrétiens (Turnhout: Brepols, 1967), the TLG Canon (New York:Oxford University Press, 1990), and others. We do not, however, follow anyof these without exception for several reasons: none of them covers thewhole field of ancient and late antique, Greek and Latin, Christian and non-Christian writers; most of them are inconsistent internally and with othercomplementary works; and most of them abbreviate at least some workstoo concisely for readers not specializing in classical studies or patristics.

We therefore provide not only the table in Appendix H but also a setof rules. If the work you need to abbreviate is not in the table, similar titlesmay be; and if not, you can use the rules to devise an acceptable abbrevia-tion of your own.

Rules for abbreviating Latin titles:

(1) Abbreviate titles of works but not names of authors (except as in rule12 below).

(2) Latin and Greek titles are capitalized according to the rules for Latin(see §7.1.3.8).

(3) The first letter of an abbreviation is always uppercase; otherwise, casein the abbreviation follows case in the spelled-out title.

(4) With regard to Latin orthography: we prefer v and j for consonantal uand i.

(5) Do not use acronymns. (In a monograph on Eusebius, the author mayelect to use HE rather than Hist. eccl., but otherwise Hist. eccl. is morehelpful to readers.) Do not use acronym-abbreviation hybrids such asDMort. or JTr. Do not abbreviate by omitting vowels, as in Phdr. forPhaedrus. (An exception would be a standard biblical abbreviation, such as Phlm for Philemon [cf. §§8.3.2 and 8.3.15].)

(6) Rather, abbreviate words by truncating them and placing a period atthe point of truncation. Don’t truncate between consonants; truncateafter a consonant rather than after a vowel where possible. The ab-breviation should normally contain at least a whole syllable. Thus:use Phaedr. rather than Phaed. for Phaedrus, Socr. rather than Soc. forSocrates, coll. rather than col. for collatio, parad. rather than para. forparadoxa, and Thras. rather than Thr. for Thrasonidis.

(7) Do not double a final consonant in an abbreviation to indicate a plural;e.g., use Can. ap. not Cann. app. for a reference in Canones apostolicae.

(8) For Latin titles that begin with prepositions (De, In, Contra, Adversus,Pro, Ad), the abbreviation includes the preposition (or its abbrevia-tion) only if one of the following holds: (1) The work is a commentary, homily, etc., whose title consists of In plus the name of the primarytext. (2) The preposition is followed by a noun too short to be abbrevi-ated, so that omitting the preposition would result in an abbreviation

85

beginning with a noun in a case other than the nominative. (3) With-out the preposition, this work could be confused with another whosename is similarly abbreviated, as with Demosthenes’ orations for andagainst Phormio. Similarly, prepositions within a title are omitted inthe absence of like complications: Enarrationes in Psalmos is abbrevi-ated Enarrat. Ps., not Enarrat. in Ps. Note that in the table, an initialpreposition is ignored in alphabetizing the abbreviations.

(9) Like prepositions, et is omitted from abbreviations.(10) When a single author has several numbered works by the same

name, we prefer in the abbreviation to place the numeral (alwaysarabic in the abbreviations though roman in the spelled-out Latintitle) before the name and italicize it. This keeps the treatise numberfrom being confused with a section, chapter, or paragraph numberand is consistent with the usage for numbered biblical books. On theother hand, sometimes such works are commonly treated as books of aunified opus; in which case the number follows the name, is set roman, and is followed immediately by a period and a section number.

(11) Where different authors have works with the same title, use the sameabbreviation for each author; and where the same word occurs indifferent titles, try to use the same abbreviation for the same word. Here is a list of words that occur commonly in titles and theirabbreviations:

(12) Similarly, where the title of one work (e.g., a biblical book or a treatise ofAristotle) occurs in the title of another (such as a commentary or atranslation), the abbreviation for the primary work should be incorpo-rated (and capitalized) in the abbreviation of the secondary work. Theabbreviation for the secondary work is not simply identical to the abbre-viation for the primary work. Rather, if it is a translation, it should beginwith an abbreviation for the name of the original author (for examples, see under Rufinus and Jerome for their translations of Origen; this is theonly circumstance in which we abbreviate authors’ names); if the sec-ondary work is a commentary of some kind, its abbreviation shouldbegin with Comm., Enarrat., Hom., Tract., or the like, or at least with In.

The following table provides abbreviations for the Latin names of biblicalbooks. For the benefit of those not familiar with the Latin Bible, the Englishname of each book is also given. These abbreviations for the Latin names ofthe books of the Bible follow the Dictionnaire latin-français des auteurschrétiens (Turnhout: Brepols, 1967) except as modified according to the fol-lowing hierarchy of rules: (1) unabbreviated forms are used only for short, uninflected forms; (2) where possible, these Latin abbreviations conform tothe abbreviations given below for the English book names, except that theLatin abbreviations are italicized and followed by a period; (3) otherwise, these Latin abbreviations conform to the rules given above. For numberedbooks, the abbreviation should use arabic numbers set italic; e.g., a patristiccommentary on 1 Chronicles, if such had been written, might be titled Com-mentarii in primum Paralipomenorum librum and abbreviated Comm. 1 Par.1

8.3.15 Latin Names of Biblical Books

1Some writers use inflected forms of Hebrew names that other writers leave un-inflected. When inflected names are used, abbreviated forms must have a period. Forexample, Commentarius in Joel would be abbreviated Comm. Joel (no period afterJoel); but Commentarius in Joelem is abbreviated Comm. Joel., since in this case an ac-cusative ending is being dropped.

No standard list of abbreviations exists for the diverse and ever-growingbody of primary material that falls under the general classification of theancient Near East. Indeed, in many cases, several titles exist for a particulartext (e.g., The Babylonian Epic of Creation or Enuma Elish). Often, the ab-breviations associated with texts from these regions are based not on a par-ticular title, but on the text editions wherein these writings are principallyfound (e.g., EA 15 for Amarna letter no. 15 in the edition of J. A. Knudtzon,Die el-Amarna Tafeln [Leipzig: J. C. Hinrichs, 1915]. Further guidelines for cit-ing these texts can be found in §§2.3.2, 4.4.6, and 7.3.1.

8.4 SECONDARY SOURCES: JOURNALS, PERIODICALS, MAJORREFERENCE WORKS, AND SERIES

Abbreviations for works not listed below should follow Siegfried M.Schwertner, Internationales Abkürzungsverzeichnis für Theologie und Grenz-gebiete (2d ed.; Berlin: de Gruyter, 1992 [=IATG2]). Abbreviations usesuperscripted numbers to indicate multiple editions. Superscripted numbersshould not be used in bibliographic or note citations. See, e.g., §7.2.15.
