INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL ARTS INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENTS

● Explain the rules and procedures of the art

room ● Review concepts from sixth grade curriculum ● Recognize, define and use art vocabulary and

phrases when discussing and describing artwork

● Identify, define, and use the Elements of Art ● Identify, define and use the Principles of

Design ● Develop and use a sketchbook for concept

building, writing exercises, and reflection ● Discuss the purposes for creation in the visual

arts ● Create a representational image of self to be

used as a baseline for assessment of skills and knowledge

Students will use a sketchbook. Students will have produced at least 1 artwork that depicts a symbolic or actual representation of the student at the end of this unit.

CRITICAL THINKING

● Transform personal experiences into original artwork using the elements and principles of

art. ● Recognize, describe and interpret the artist’s intention using age-appropriate vocabulary. ● Critique, defend and support student preference for an artwork using age-appropriate art

vocabulary. ● Identify art theories and processes based on the elements and principles of art. ● Use and manipulate tools and materials in an age-appropriate manner that displays

increase in skill and style development. ● Analyze how artists express themselves and their cultural identities through their artwork. ● Begin to discuss the function of the visual arts and how it contributes to their community

and culture. ● Compare and contrast art works of a similar theme, similar media, or similar concept from

ART HISTORY AND CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS

The historical significance of each art project will be an integral part of every lesson throughout the academic school year. Students will be able to:

● Discuss the historical significance of art in our lives ● Compare and contrast themes in artwork using historical and cultural context ● Research and discuss specific artists, art movements, and cultures throughout history and the

world ● Research and discuss specific careers in the arts ● Compare and contrast viewing and experiencing collections and exhibitions in different

venues ● Apply research skills and strategies to create a biographical document on an artist or group of

artists ● Demonstrate critiquing skills and strategies when looking at and talking about art ● Compare and contrast diverse cultural groups and traditions that have inspired art creation

Students will be able to compare and contrast at least 2 careers found in the arts. Students will be able to recall and refer to at least 1 historically significant aspect of an art project. Students will be able to complete 1 art history or career-focused research project.

• Incorporate, identify and discuss Elements and Principles in relation to subject matter,

themes, and artwork

• Make decisions using Elements and Principles to effectively communicate their ideas visually

• Use a variety of art materials and resources that are developmentally appropriate

• Select art materials that best achieve student’s artistic intent

• Create various artworks based on conceptual imagery, social issues and current events

• Develop an understanding of the relationship between regional cultures and art

ASSESSMENT AND PORTFOLIO REVIEW

Students will be able to: ● Complete all projects that may have been assigned ● Participate in a collaborative artistic display by developing a visual plan for displaying works of art and analyzing exhibit space, the needs of the viewer and the layout of the exhibit ● Explain and discuss how they created their artwork ● Relate and reference their artwork to art history ● Reflect on the meaning or their feelings about their work verbally and through writing in an artist statement

Students should have produced at least 7 art pieces for their portfolio indicating mastery of all curriculum components at the 7th grade level. The portfolio should include evidence of the techniques, concepts, cultural connections, art history, and thinking skills developed through instruction over the year.

▪ Create artwork using a variety of materials and age- appropriate media

▪ Analyze, describe and evaluate how choosing specific Elements of Art and Principles of Design effect how an artistic concept is viewed

▪ Explore scale and proportion when drawing portraits or self-portraits

▪ Use developmentally appropriate drawing techniques in an efficient and effective manner

● Describe and discuss the visual arts choices that were made in the creation of the advertisement
